It is a matter of pleasure and pride that I provide an introduction to Garware Institute of
Career Education & Development (GICED). GICED was established in 1984 following impetus
provided by generous donation from Garware group of Industries. The basic objective of Garware
Institute is to provide skill-based training in variety of fields and to enable the students find an
employment and/or initiate a small-scaled business enterprise. GICED offers Under- Graduate/ Post-
Graduate Courses ranging from 3 months to 3 years.
Mumbai University has always ensured that hand-picked top class teaching faculty is drawn
from Academics and Industry. The courses have mainly originated from the need of various sectors of
market for a trained manpower. Each course offers basic theoretical understanding of a subject,
practical/ field training wherever essential and finally crucial system for helping students to find
suitable placements.
Significance of Skill-based training has been amply emphasized by the following quote of the
Hon. Prime Minister of India, during his speech from Red Fort, New Delhi, on 15th August 2014,
"Skilling is building a better India. If we have to move towards development, then Skill Development
should be our mission".
GICED is one of the pioneers in India in imparting skill-based education/ training from
which thousands of students have benefitted so far. Mumbai University offers Dual Degree policy
which could help you to acquire a skill-based diploma from GICED along with a formal degree from
University departments/ its affiliated colleges or institutes.
The students who are sent out of the program have been trained and prepared with
knowledge, skills, talent, and Enthusiasm to work in urban corporate as well as rural sectors
confidently. I believe that every moment you spend on the GICED campus will be fruitful in realizing
your career dreams.

GENESIS
The House of Garware’s was founded by the dynamic visionary, Late
Padmabhushan Balchandra Digamber alias Abasaheb Garware. The GICED is his
brain-child as much as that of the University, signifying the joint venture of education
and industry.
Shri Abasaheb advocated the re-orientation of education, because in his view
traditional arts, crafts and hereditary skills that passed from one generation to
another were disappearing and there were no facilities for formal training in these
areas. Further, trained manpower in various skills and trades migrated from India to
other countries causing an acute shortage of skills at home.
Industry then which was poised for rapid growth, did not have properly
trained personnel for manning the shop-floor operations. Curiously, little training
within the industry was imparted, except in the highly organized sector. This training
gap was discussed by Shri Abasaheb with eminent industrialists in Mumbai. The idea
of such an Institute for career / vocational education, envisaging coordination of
industry and university activities, found spontaneous acclaim.
It was in 1981 during the University of Mumbai’s post-centennial silver
jubilee celebrations that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ram Joshi, approached the House of
Garware for financial support to new educational ventures. The University and the
Garware Foundation examined several proposals and proposed the establishment
of an Institute wholly devoted to the promotion of career education. Affirming its
interest the Garware Foundation signed an agreement with the University for
support in establishing such an Institute. That gave birth to GICED as an unique
institute of University bringing industry-education venture for a major diversification
programme in higher education. Thus, the Institute was founded on Saturday, 27th
October, 1984 and inaugurated by Hon. Shri. Y.V. Chandrachud, Chief Justice of India.
The regular diploma courses started in August 1985.
MISSION
As distinct from traditional academic courses, GICED's educational
programmes seek to meet the following needs:
To diversify education with a view to provide not only knowledge
but also skills.
To give orientation to education for appropriate employment.
To bring about greater linkage between general education and work
oriented education.
To enable students to apply their knowledge of theory, techniques
and practice for their personal and organizational goals.
To impart intensive training and promote skills to increase
prospects of employment of those who have passed the Higher
Secondary or, Graduate Examination and even for open eligibility.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The Institute has diversified aims and some of these are of national
importance.
The Institute aims to:
Identify high growth sectors and set up facilities to meet future
requirements of trained manpower in these sectors.
Provide training facilities in those areas where special skills
are required for efficient performance of the job.
Provide an opportunity to learn job skills in an actual workplace
environment
Experiment with innovative teaching techniques and analyze the
results in a continuing effort to improve teaching standards.
Undertake specific programmes to meet the unique requirements of
various segments of an industry.
Set up a Career Guidance service to facilitate career choice through
information dissemination, counseling and training.
HOW IS GICED DIFFERENT FROM OTHER CAREER &
MANAGEMENT INSTITUTES
GICED has introduced a number of courses linking education
with work/field/practical experience giving students often
a simulation of the actual work conditions in employment.
Keeping in view the Dual Degree policy, students can pursue any
one of the courses offered by GICED besides their regular
Degree/Diploma simultaneously.
All programmes are aligned to the policy of NSDC(National Skill
Development corporation) & NSQF(National Skill Qualification Frame)
UGDCCF & PGDCCF(Recognized by the ministry of finance for customs
brokers licencing regulations rule six examination)
We believe in skilling work force and hence provide 100% placement
opportunities to our students.
