Puerto Ricans have a rich and distinguished record of military service and a historic legacy of participation in the defense of the United States of America. The Porto Rico Regiment of Infantry was first formed in 1899 and was renamed U.S. 65 th Infantry Regiment in 1932. They served gallantly during WWI, WWII and the Korean Conflict. Pierluisi stated. “We need to strike a medal that will tell the history of our heritage, valor and ultimate sacrifice made by our military ancestors for this country," said Javier A. Morales. “Now we begin to construct and facilitate a design that will enshrine the legacy of the 65 th forever in the history of The United States” said Samuel Rodríguez.
