Old wooden door that opens to a dark hall, a transi-tion space that invites to other ones.Cramped office to the right, smells like old paper and books, taken by a big drawing desk.Spacious TV room to the right, full with furniture, but has always space for lying down.Short stairs that go down leads to a big living room, the fireplace, the piano and the dining room. At the back there’s the glass door that goes to the back-yard.Long stairs that go up lead to the bedrooms. All of them have carpet, which muffles the sounds of the steps. The one at the end of the corridor is shared, has two beds, a drawer and a desk. Feels small, even when it’s not being shared anymore. It has the best lighting, the morning sun comes through the win-dow throughout the year.

DESCRIPTION

Lina Bo Bardi is a paradigm of modern Brazilian architecture. Born

in Italy, she arrived in São Paulo in the 40s with her husband

Pietro Maria Bardi. In 1951 her first project in Brazil was

completed: the Glass House.

One of the first intentions of Lina was to conserve the natural

terrain profile, which is very slanted. It influenced the project

so that the front of the house was built on stilts. The back

house is supported directly on concrete walls on the ground.

This massive aspect of the posterior portion contrasts with the

lightness of the southern portion and its main facade, creating

a rich dialogue between transparency and opacity, nature and

construction, interior and exterior.

The house is divided into two well-defined portions: The first is

the lounge and dining room, dominated by large glass openings. It

occupies the entire width and depth of the first two modules of

the residence. At the center of this hall is a courtyard, in which

a tree remnant of the vegetation of the area was maintained.

An open staircase , made of steel frame and granite steps, is the

main access to the upper floor of the house.

The second portion is formed by the area of the dorms and

services. The bedrooms are adjacent to the lounge area and

services form the last module in the north. Connecting these two

tracks is the kitchen, which together with an open patio make up

the central portion of the this massive block. The patio is again

essential to the comfort of home element, allowing ventilation of

all bedrooms.
