PREFATORY NOTE TO GENESIS.

WHENthe task of preparing the larger Cambridge edition of the Septuagint was

entrusted to the present editors by the Syndics of the University Press in 1895, it

was settled that the first volume should contain the Octateuch (Genesis to Ruth). As thecollection and arrangement of material have occupied a much longer time than was

anticipated, it has been decided to publish the first volume in four parts containing(i) Genesis, (2) Exodus and Leviticus, (3) Numbers and Deuteronomy, and (4) Joshua,

Judges and Ruth in order to place the information we have collected at the disposalof scholars as soon as possible. We are not yet able to present in final form our prefaceto the Octateuch, and must here confine ourselves to lists of the symbols and abbrevi-

ations used, with a short explanation of the methods adopted in our critical notes.The object of our work is to present as clearly and fully as is possible within

reasonable limits of space the evidence available for the reconstruction of the text or

texts of the LXX. At an early stage of the undertaking it was decided that it wouldbe premature to attempt to provide a reconstructed or "true" text in this edition; and

that the text of the Vatican MS. should be followed wherever extant, its lacunae being

supplied from the Alexandrian or another uncial MS. The text of Ur Swete's manual

edition has therefore been reprinted with but few alterations. The punctuation has been

revised, and a few departures from the text of the principal MS. have been made in

cases where its readings are quite indefensible. Daggers (* *) have been used to indicate

all such departures from the MS. which are not merely corrections of itacisms, misspellings,or trivial errors of a similar kind.

The symbol placed at the top of the outer margin on each page is that of the

MS. which supplies the text. A list of the MSS. and versions quoted in the notes is

given in a line between the first and second sets of notes. Where an authorit}' is extant

for part of a page only, its symbol is placed in brackets.

1. The notes immediately below the text contain the itacisms and small errors of

the principal MS., as well as of the other uncial MSS. quoted in the manual edition,but not of the remaining uncials, nor of any cursive MSS.' After the first 20 chaptersof Genesis were in type, we decided from this point onwards to include in these notes

also all readings of the principal MS. which are not adopted in the text, and notes on

corrections in this MS. by the first or by later scribes. Its substantial variants are

repeated in the main notes only where they are supported by other authorities or are

important for the interpretation of the whole evidence.

2. In the main body of notes we have endeavoured to give the substantial variants

found in (a) all the extant uncial MSS. and the 30 cursive MSS. selected by us as

representative, (i^) the chief ancient versions made from the Septuagint, (c) the writings of

Philo, Josephus, and the most important of the early Christian writers. With a view to

completeness, moreover, variants which are quoted by Holmes and Parsons from any oftheir MSS., but are not found in any of the MSS. selected by us, are given between

angular brackets () on the authority of their edition, the MSS. so quoted being denoted

by Holmes's numbers.

The number of authorities quoted has made it desirable to exclude impossible formsand constructions, and minutiae devoid of special interest or value : but it has not been

possible to follow rigid rules with absolute consistency. In recording possible variants, which

may be only itacistic blunders, we have been to some extent guided by the character ofthe MS. which contains them. Where a reading is found in only one MS., its spellingis reproduced. Where two or more MSS. have the same reading but shew unimportantdifferences in spelling, all are credited with the forms of words such as are usually fol-

lowed in the text. But in the case of proper names we have endeavoured to give allvariations of spelling with the exception of such itacisms as the interchange of t and et,and (in some cases) of e and ai.

In the arrangement of the notes the order of the text has of course been followed ;and variants on

longer portionsof the text

precedethose on shorter

portions beginningwith the same word. In each set of variants words prefixed to those of the text are

given first (introduced by "pr"), then alternative words, and then words added after those

of the text (introduced by +). Except in the case where words are prefixed or added,we have tried to avoid quoting the same authority twice in the same set of variantsunless one of the points in question is a mere detail of spelling. But we have not alwaysbeen able to carry out this rule consistently. To discover the exact reading of any MS.it is important that readers should look through the whole list of variants on the par-ticular word or phrase in question.

When an addition or alternative reading of some length is supported by severalauthorities, the commonest form of the reading is given first, followed by the symbols of

all the authorities which yield it general support: then the detailed variations of each

authority from that type are added in double brackets [[ ]]. This method, besides savinga great deal of space, seems to shew clearly at a glance what authorities really supportmany of the more important variants. In the case of these and other readings, whereone authority differs in a single detail from the common type shewn by the authoritieswhich otherwise support the same reading, the difference has been recorded in ordinarybrackets ( ) immediately after the symbol of that authority. Where several agree in onedivergence, it has been recorded in similar brackets after the list of symbols.

When the reading of the text has the support of comparatively few MSS., the positiveevidence has been given immediately after the word or phrase quoted from the text andto the left of the square bracket. In such cases the symbols of those cursives which

support the commonest variant are not separately enumerated, except where there has beencorrection by later hands, but are included under

given in full. If any are omitted it is because their evidence is not decisive for or againstthe particular variant.

Our treatment of the several ancient versions has varied according to the characterof each. The evidence of the Old Latin has been given with special fullness, not onlybecause of its intrinsic importance, but also because of its relation to the Scripture citationsof the Latin Fathers. The Syro-hexaplar is fully quoted for a different reason, viz. itsextreme literalness, and the certainty with which it can be retranslated into Greek. TheArmenian has the same quality though in a less

degree; and the character of the

Palestinian Aramaic, where it is extant, is similar. The Ethiopic is too free to be quotedwithout c^reat caution, and from the iniddlc of Genesis onward the use of its evidence hasbeen confined almost entirely to the cases where it agrees with some other authority orwith the Hebrew original: much space has thus been saved without serious detriment'. The

Egyptian versions are on the whole accurate translations, though they do not follow the

Greek so slavishly as the Syro-hexaplar, and the Sahidic sometimes betrays a tendencyto paraphrase. The evidence for some unimportant variants in the Coptic versions is veryuncertain, e.g. as regards the copula before verbs (particularly in narrative), the article, and

pronouns affi.Ked to nouns and verbs. In all these cases the evidence of the version hasbeen neglected unless it is supported hy other authority". Where the weak article is used in

Coptic, the version has not been cited for or against the presence of the article in Greek^.

The evidence of the versions has been quoted in Latin wherever their variants are

unsupported by Greek authorities. The original languages are quoted only in a few instanceswhere it seems necessary to emphasize some point which is in itself doubtful or whichcannot be clearly expressed in Latin. The forms of proper names found in the Latinand Egyptian versions have usually been given in full, and so too the Armenian forms

frequently occurs The forms of proper names found in the Syro-hexaplar have in the great majority of instances been neglected, as agreeing with those

found in the Peshitta and evidently derived from that source: but wherev-er they deviate

from the Peshitta form they have been given in the Syriac character, since there is no

sufficiently trustworthy witness to their vocalisation. In the Ethiopic version the propernames are so constantly distorted and corrupt, that it has seemed best to neglect altogetherits evidence on this head.

The redaction of patristic evidence has proved in some ways the most difficult andleast satisfactory part of our work. To the well-known difficulties due to the unsatisfactorystate of the text of most editions of the Fathers, and to the habit shewn by many writersof quoting inexactly from memory, is added that which arises from the reaction of New

Testament quotations of certain passages, which were more familiar to the writers in thisform than in the actual Greek of the Septuagint. There are many instances too of"conflate" quotations, where elements derived from different passages of the Old Testamenthave been interwoven. The fractions which indicate the proportion of support that a variantreceives from a Father as compared with the total number of his quotations of the passagemust be regarded as only roughly approximate. They take account only of those passageswhich we have decided to treat as definite quotations with respect to the particularvariants to which they are attached. It is not always easy to decide whether the re-

petition of a verse, or part of it, in the near neighbourhood of a quotation should betreated as a separate attestation of the words. The improved texts of the Berlin andVienna editions have been used wherever available ' : but in most other cases we have had

to depend on unsatisfactory texts. This is shewn only too clearly by the frequency with

which two or more variants receive about equal support from the same writer. And it

must be added that even when satisfactory editions of all the Fathers are available, it

will still be difficult to estimate the value of their evidence without considering each

quotation with special reference to its contextin the works of the writer who makes it.

Of evidence derived from the writings of Josephus we have been able to make little

use : his relation to the text of the LXX. so far as he used it at all is quite differentin kind from that of the other writers whose quotations we have given. The questionsof the sources from which he derived his own account of facts recorded in the Old

Testament, and of his method in dealing with his materials, are such as lie outside the

scope of our undertaking.

3. Our third set of notes contains the hexaplaric matter found in the margins of

those MSS. which we quote continuously, and of the Syro-hexaplar version. We did notthink it our duty to include in our selection all MSS. with marginal hexaplaric matter,or to collect such matter from other sources, for the result would only have been the

reprinting of the greater part of Field's Hexapla. But when a MS. was chosen for its own

text, it seemed desirable to give the whole of its evidence. We have thus added acertain amount of new matter not given by Field, but none of this is of great importance.

Our task has been greatly lightened by the generous contributions of many friendsand fellow-workers, who have helped us with the collation and photographing of MSS.,and with the collection of patristic quotations. But we must postpone detailed acknow-

ledgement till the publication of the first volume as a whole.

There is however no need to delay the acknowledgement of our debt to those whose

work is done. The obvious defects of the great Oxford edition of the LXX. by Holmesand Parsons, when judged by critical standards of a later age, have unfortunately done

much to obscure its enormous value, especially in the volume which contains the Pentateuch.

The amount and completeness of the information from Greek MSS. which this edition

supplies is the more surprising the more the subject is studied. To have collected the

readings of practically all the MSS. of the LXX. which were then in Europe, during the

stormy years at the end of the i8th and beginning of the 19th century, was a veryremarkable feat. Without this pioneer work our task would have been almost impossible,and it is only just to recognize the extent of our debt to the Oxford editors.

Among the LXX. scholars of the 19th century the name of Lagarde stands first.His contributions to the subject are too well known to need special mention here. Butit would be impossible to publish our work without declaring our indebtedness to them.

In April 1868 he wrote" Mea autem Genesis editione conabor uti ad instituendos iuuenes,

qui integriueteris testamenti graeci editionem parantem me possint adiuuare : nam solus

tantum laborem sustinere omnino nequeo." He alone, if any one, could have "sustainedthe labour," not only of the preliminary task which has been entrusted to us, but alsoof its more important sequel the reconstruction of the pre-hexaplaric text of the LXX.,so far as that is now possible. We gladly testify to what we have learned from his editionof Genesis, as well as from his other writings.

Once more, it is always a pleasure to Cambridge men to have an opportunity of

recording their obligations to Dr Hort. It is altogether characteristic of him that thoughhis name is nowhere publicly connected with LXX. studies the determination of the scopeof this edition was entirely his work. In his memorandum on the extent and value ofextant authorities for the text of the LXX. the lines are laid down which have been
