Talking Sticks Discussion Materials: 2 craft sticks per person, 1 large cup Question cards
Directions: 1. Everyone takes 2 sticks. 2. One person turns over the top card and reads the
question aloud. 3. If someone wants to share an idea, they have to
put a stick in the cup. 4. When you finish talking over the first question,
the next person turns over a new card. 5. If you use both of your sticks, wait quietly and
listen to the others. 6. When all the sticks are back in the cup, everyone
takes 2 more. 7. Keep talking until you finish discussing the cards or
the time runs out.

Spin N Spell
1. Play with a partner. Decide who will be the first Spinner and who will be the first Reader. Stack the spelling cards upside down near the gameboard.
2. The Reader picks up a spelling card and reads the word aloud without showing it. 3. The Spinner spins the pointer* and performs the action. The Reader checks the answer
(use a dictionary if needed to check definitions or sentences). 4. If the answer is correct, the Spinner scores the given number of points. 5. Take turns, and keep a tally of your points. The winner is the person with the most
points when the time is up or when all cards have been used.

Spelling Showdown
You will need: ♦ white board and markers ♦ spelling cards
1. Cut apart the spelling cards, mix them up, and stack
them face down in the middle of the team.
2. Person #1 picks up the first card, looks at it, and reads it aloud to the team. He or she should not let the others see the card.
3. Everyone else writes the word on their white boards. They put their boards face down to show they are ready.
4. Person #1 says “Showdown!” and everyone shows their boards. Person #1 checks everyone’s answers and reveals the correct spelling if anyone missed it.
5. Person #2 becomes the next leader and the game continues. Repeat with remaining cards, switching leaders after each round.
Challenge Round: After you finish the spellings, study
the definitions. Follow the directions above but have everyone write a short definition for the word. The definitions don’t have to be written exactly the same way, but they do have to be generally correct.
