Term Two, 2013

Hi, my name is Andrew Daddo!

Kick a footy or read a book?

I know which one I used to choose when I was your age.

In fact, you’d have been mad to try and get between me and my footy and my

dreams of playing for the Melbourne Footy Club. My brother and I would play kick-

to-kick from the time we got up ‘til it was too dark to see and it was great!!

That was until the doctor said I wasn’t allowed to play for a

while—at least until my broken arm healed. I’d snapped

it skating down the Big Dipper and suddenly there

wasn’t a lot I could do. A good mate gave me one of

the best presents I’d ever received. It was a book.

The perfect book, as it turned out, because it was

the one that got me reading.

I could read already, but this was the first book

that made me want to slink away under the covers

or hide up a tree and read it over and over again.

It was a magic feeling, and I’d love it if everyone

could feel that way, too.

That’s one of the reasons I started writing—to

give kids some funny reasons to read. Now

I write all kinds of books—some for little

kids, some for big kids, but hopefully

books that everyone can enjoy.

I love writing, and that’s mainly

because I was given the gift of

reading.
