MESSAGE FROM THE CO-PRESIDENTSOn behalf of the Mercer Island Schools Foundation Board of Directors, thank you to all our donors and volunteers who worked tirelessly to raise over $1.2 million in the 2018-2019 fiscal year to help maintain the tradition of excellence in the Mercer Island School District. The dollars donated to the MISF are spent in support of every student, in every classroom, at all six public schools on the island. The Foundation funds educational initiatives such as updated curricula and textbooks, lab equipment, Career Day guest speakers, music and theater workshops, and IslandWood Camp – all of which add spark and dimension to the learning experience.
The MISF is able to raise over a million dollars each fiscal year by conducting one fundraising campaign in the fall and another in the spring. Every October, teachers, administrators and volunteers devote two evenings to making calls for the annual All in for Kids campaign. During the 2018 fall campaign, $488,300 was raised to cover priority funding requests from the school district, including the enrichment grant program where teachers submit funding requests for innovative programs, experiences and materials. In early spring, we kick off our Spring Campaign with the annual Breakfast of Champions, where funds are raised to meet the remainder of our fundraising goals: to keep classes as small as possible, maintain

Helping Every Student Find Their Way
The ceramics and material science classes received funds from Mercer Island Schools Foundation to do raku firing with a professional potter as a cross-curricular activity. We invited Eric to our school to show students the different ways in which clay can be fired! Raku utilizes a reduction technique, meaning the oxygen is used up and creates different colors and textures that students wouldn’t normally be able to see in the classroom. We also had discussions about the process and what it’s like to be someone who works in the industry. Without the funds offered through the MISF we truly wouldn’t be able to provide such amazing opportunities.

I would like to thank the Mercer Island Schools Foundation for supporting our radio station and broadcasting students. Two grants that were HUGE game- changers were for studio soundproofing and the external speaker. Prior to installation our students sounded like they were broad- casting from an office or classroom, but now we sound as good as any station on the dial of any size! The MISF also made it possible for our student broadcasters to be heard in the main hallway outside the station. Now the sounds of 88.9 TheBridge creates an audio oasis off the 300 hallway and makes it possible to not only see, but also hear, students in the live studio!
These improvements will benefit the entire community, as our programming and station offer a platform for ALL students, and a public service of the community.

We realized we were in a very special school district when we joined as parents of a kindergartener in 2013. We learned early on that part of the reason for this is that Mercer Island has always had a supportive community of generous donors. Through the years, our kids have been empowered by the most amazing and dedicated teachers and support staff. By giving to MISF every year, we not only provide for our own kids, but also uphold a proud tradition so that future generations of Islanders may enjoy what previous ones have given to us.

The quality of education offered by Mercer Island schools is one of the primary reasons we planted our roots here almost 15 years ago. We joined a community of people who proudly and generously support their public school system in order to create the edu-cational experience needed for our kids to thrive. We are asking more of our students and school system than ever before, so we must continue to give our teachers and administrators the resources and support they need to provide the quality of education we all want for our kids. We feel compelled to give to the MISF because, in the end, you get what you give. Our family and community have benefitted greatly from the opportunities provided by our school district. Being an MISF donor is an important way to show our appreciation and gratitude.

Supporting Students Who Learn Differently The Mercer Island Special Services Department is dedicated to creating inclusive and equitable learning settings while providing rigorous and challenging learning for all students. We proudly serve approximately 450 students with disabilities, from ages 3 to 21. The state of Washington has historically underfunded special education. Our department is grateful for the generous donations provided to the Mercer Island School Foundation, which funds teacher grants at each school. Donations to support students with disabilities helps provide equi-table access to school activities, clubs, and programs. This past year the Mercer Island Schools Foundation has provided adaptive physical education equipment and sensory activities, mindfulness materials and a variety of classroom materials to each building and program. This year the Foundation has funded inclusive playground signage that will allow all students to communicate using pictures at Island Park. Your gift to the MISF shows respect for all students and diverse learners.

MISF InspiresConnecting Students to their Futures
The number of students who have been positively impacted by the Mercer Island Schools Foundation is simply spectacular! Middle school students received portable planetarium sessions and a passport to distant planetary bodies; enjoyed interactive environmental fun with an engineering focus at Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center; and experienced the electrifying science of Pacific Science Center Volts & Jolts presentations. In my marine biology classes, 16 light microscopes were purchased on a grant. These microscopes have allowed students to view their own home-made slides, as well as a range of sea specimens (budding hydra, ctenoid scales, phyto- and zooplankton, microscopic marine worms, the fins of a squid and the tentacles of a sea cucumber, and more). Field trips funded by the MISF to the Institute for Biological Research at the University of Washington allowed my biotechnology students to work with research scientists, learn about their careers and current research, and ultimately spark curiosity. I’ve had students come back and say these experiences helped them choose their career path and prepare

I was able to provide a brand-new, diverse leveled library for my first grade class, complete with fiction and non-fiction books, with a grant from the Mercer Island Schools Foundation! It’s not all fairy tales. Our kids really like non-fiction books. They want to read about animals, math and computer scientists.They want to see themselves in these books. SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTDuring my junior year, I somewhat reluctantly became a BRIDGES leader. Once a week I gave presentations and led other students in mindfulness and mental health, building community and creating posters. Soon I realized that I genuinely enjoyed engaging fellow students, and that in my future career, I wanted to work with people.As a student leader I have gained faith in my leadership skills and gained the confidence needed for my journey through college and beyond.
