From the Principal’s desk
Woo, Whoo, Whoa - any or all three - it has been one hectic roller coaster since beginning
of term and here we are at the end. Phew!!
Some families took an early break and unfortunately this has impacted on our Attendance
Goal, but I am sure they will have some great things to share when they return, so it will
be very much worth it for all of us.
The last two weeks were intense with an author visit at Sir Henry Parkes Memorial PS in
Tenterfield to listen to Belinda Murrell talk about her books and how she gets inspiration
from her family and friends for the characters and storylines. (we bought four to read)
Our new BeeBot was put through its paces. The children had a great time working out how
to program it to move a certain distance forward or back and to turn right and left.
There has been huge gains in analytical and tactical thinking already and with the ProBot
and ConstructaBot to be added to our robotic collection shortly there will be some
interesting problems and projects ahead.
The last of our State Library sessions saw the children creating busts of a goldminer
from clay - what a mess, but what fun!! Some look a little more like convicts than miners,
but hey a lot of them were both anyway.
Have a great holiday and take care.
See you at the Anzac Service 8am Thursday 25th
Cheers until next term…. Berrill

Around The Library 5 Video Conferencing: Notes for Teachers
Goldminer 1861 - Clay sculpture
The State Library Pictures collections reveal a fascinating portrait of Australian lives. They form one of the most significant historical and documentary collections in Australia, documenting the lives of past and present Australians, their society, buildings and landscapes. In this video conference we unravel the story behind the artwork ‘Goldminer 1861’ by James Anderson, and look closely at why the im-age was created. It will be the inspiration for an instructional sculp-ture workshop session using ceramic materials. This video conference will assist students to:
discover ways to create images from their own personal stories explore hand-building techniques using clay to make a sculpture apply this knowledge to begin an artwork of their own
This is an interactive, step by step workshop presentation that students can follow and work from as the session progresses. This will be a beginning to the artwork only and the students will need time to complete the artwork after the session.
Materials needed for the video conference: White earthenware handbuilding clay OR modelling clay ‐ approx 900 grams per student Modelling tools – paddle pop stick, fork, spoon, pencil or commercial clay modeling tools Old toothbrush – for scoring surfaces to join them
These are the sculptures made by Y3-6 students in this VC lesson.
This was the final session of this series and we look forward to the
next series, but in the meantime we have access to units of work that
we will continue to use in class.
The children have had a great time learning a little about several styles
of Art, trying their hand at making their own and being able to view
artworks at the State Gallery that are not available to the general
public.
We thank the State Library of NSW for making this possible.
