Resilience Challenge for March

Congratulations to the students and parents who accepted the February challenge of students carry their own bags to and from school. This is a small step on the way to developing independence and resilience.

One way to describe resilience is “how quickly you bounce back after a set back”. This is not always easy for many students and adults. Sometimes will let the “set back” drag us down and allow it to continue to ruin our day. The March challenge is to put your “set back” on the scale. By that I mean:

Rate your set back on a scale of 1 to 10. One being not really a problem and ten being the worst thing that could have possibly happened to you.

Once you have your rating ask yourself why you didn’t rate it higher. For example, I rated it a 6 and not a 7 because it could have been worse.

Then ask yourself what is one thing I could do to move it a number lower. For example, I can turn my 6 into a 5 by going and playing with a different friend.

Putting things on the scale takes time and practice, often it will require an adult to guide the conversation. The challenge for us as parents is to not try and rescue the situation.

PRINCIPALS NEWS Building Works Update

Early next week our school should receive the first set of concept designs for the new building works. These works will include the construction of fourteen new classrooms and an extension to the library space. There is a Project Reference Group meeting next week that will discuss the concept designs. Further information about community consultation will be included in this meeting and shared in future newsletters. Below is an information bulletin from the design team.

Project summary: The Department of Education is planning a major capital works upgrade at Bolwarra Public School that will deliver a new 14 classroom building replacing demountables with permanent facilities while increasing the school’s capacity to meet the demand for the growing local student population. The new facilities will integrate Futures Learning concepts to create an inclusive technology-rich environment where students will interact through a variety of teaching models. February 2017 update A Project Reference Group (PRG) has been established to provide input on the project and to keep the school community updated on progress. Along with representatives from the department’s Asset Management team and the architect, the PRG includes:

Andrew Eastcott – Director, Public Schools NSW, Maitland Network (Chair)

Steven Richard – Principal, Bolwarra Public School Ali Haggarty – Parent representative

Over the last several months the project team have reviewed the existing school facilities and undertaken initial consultation with the PRG and school to facilitate the development of educational requirements tailored for Bolwarra Public School.

Investigations into domestic and international best practice education models were undertaken by the team and presented to school staff to assist with the development of school specific educational principles. Examples of these models and other school projects can be viewed in the school’s administration foyer.

PRG members and school representatives also visited recently completed projects in Sydney which provided examples of how future focused education models principles can be used.

The project milestone achieved for this period was the endorsement of the Educational Principles by the PRG. The project team are now using these principles to develop concept designs.
