Celebrate, remember, fight back

As the trial against Oscar slowly unwraps, I wonder if I’m the only one who is growing more and more confused, even with my own opinions. Honesty is the best policy. I know you’ve heard that a million times, but I think I’ve learnt something new over the past week; if honesty is not the only policy, then it’s not worth much and

should be totally discarded. It is not just about the people who receive the lies, or let’s say dishonesty, it’s also about the dishonest party. I can’t formulate a clear thought as to how someone can tell a dishonest story and find it easy to move on with their life, aloof to the consequences. Now I know what I’m about to say will contradict what I’ve already said, but please indulge me. We all tell the occasional fib, I’m very guilty when it comes to traffic officers. If you are a traffic officer and you pull me over, chances are I will lie to you. I find that easy to do because I don’t expect that I will have to deal with the same officer pulling me over for the same offence. It’s wrong, but that’s not the type of lie I will have to remember and constantly defend with other lies. There are things that are better to come clean about. Ok, even better with all things. Honesty and its philosophies should not be compartmentalised to suit situations, nor

should there be levels to honesty. It was Mark Twain who said, “If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything.” I think that sums up everything that I have learnt in the week. If one can learn to approach every situation with honesty, then not only do you relieve the recipient, but yourself too. Think about it, if you were a liar on trial (and I’m not implying Oscar is a liar), and it dragged on and on, you would have to remember what every witness said, then remember what you initially said and after all that try to forge a way out without contradicting yourself. It must be exhausting. My advice, and trust me this will pierce me first, tell the truth even if it causes you a dry throat and a shaky voice. It will only serve you better.

On Friday 7 March Casual Day hosted their annual award ceremony, giving praise to the companies and sponsors that make Casual Day possible each year. This fundraising project that has seen the South African public open its hearts to persons with disabilities started in 1995 and is celebrating their 20th anniversary year in 2014. In 2013, Casual Day raised R23.5 million nationally helping South Africans with disabilities, and the target they set for themselves for 2014 is to raise R27.5 million. The National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in SA (NCPPDSA) in Edenvale are not only the owners of Casual Day, but they also raised R202 428 for Casual Day and were placed 5th in the top ten organisations that raised the most donations in Gauteng. Casual Day Project Team Chairman and Executive Committee member of the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa, Mac Mia explained, “Casual Day was not built by one individual, it is a collective effort of which we can all be proud. Casual Day was built, one sticker at a time, by everyone who participated over the last 19 years.” He extended his thanks to South Africans for their love and support towards this project. At the event the theme for 2014 was announced – Bring out the Bling. Project leader Celeste Vinassa said, “To celebrate Casual Day’s 20th birthday we are inspiring South Africans to dress up, not down. We hope that organisations and corporations will start planning their campaign soon as it takes the entire year for the Casual Day ‘train’ to roll out. “The theme is Bring out the Bling and the colour for the year is Dazzle Blue, a dramatic colour relating to the world of the theatre. So our message to you is to rustle up a little razzle dazzle. Casual Day is all about fantasy and dressing up in things you can find around the house. Be creative with glitter, fabric, shiny paper, sequins or just wear your sticker and a posh casual attitude.” For more information on how to participate in Casual Day go to www.casualday.co.za.

East Rand CANSA Relay for Life’s unique event is taking place on 21 and 22 March at Hoërskool Hans Moore in Benoni, in honour of cancer patients and survivors.

CANSA Ready for Life is offering everyone in the community the opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. It represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten and those facing cancer will be supported and one day cancer will be conquered. Relay for Life is a fun, overnight team event that raises awareness of cancer and raises much needed funds to fight cancer. The event is volunteer driven and community owned. During Relay, teams of 10-15 friends, neighbours, families and co-workers commit to keeping at least one member walking the track at all times because cancer never sleeps. Each team submits a commitment or registration fee.Their purpose is to lead the fight against cancer in South Africa by offering a unique and integrated service to the public and all people affected by cancer. “As a leading role player in cancer control, the scientific findings and knowledge gained from our research are used to realign our health programme as well as focus our watchdog initiatives to the greater benefit of the public,” said a CANSA representative.Teams set up camp around the track before the CANSA Relay for Life event opens with the moving Survivor’s Lap of Honour. After sunset the candles are lit in the luminaire bags that encircle the track. Everyone gathers round to pay tribute and remember those lost to cancer, support those fighting cancer and rejoice with those who have fought the disease and won.Throughout the evening and the next day, everyone enjoys entertainment, fun and camaraderie in a festival-like atmosphere. Each community’s Relay for Life is special and is part of a national and international movement in the fight against cancer. How can you get involved?• Form a team for your nearest CANSA Relay for Life event.• Join the planning committee for your nearest event.• Be a CANSA Relay for Life Sponsor.• Spread the word: encourage participation from all, especially cancer survivors.

Ek wou eers my kop in die naaste blompot indruk, so skaam het ek gekry!

A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his parents in Valhalla, Centurion, Gauteng police said on Monday. The 35-year-old man was arrested on Saturday in Boksburg North, on the East Rand, said Captain Agnes Huma. He allegedly killed his parents, aged 49 and 58, in their home in Centurion on Friday. A woman was killed when a man allegedly stabbed her in front of her children in Kempton Park. The man has been arrested, Gauteng police said on Monday.According to reports the 25 year old man was a former employee at Annemarie van Zyl’s shop in Newton Street, Captain Jethro Mtshali said. He allegedly entered the shop around 7:30 on Saturday and allegedly withdrew a sharp instrument and stabbed the mother several times. The man escaped with an undisclosed amount of money. The woman’s six and eight year old daughters

were at the shop during the incident and it is said that the eight year old called for help after the man left.“Fortunately, police were patrolling near the scene of the crime and saw the man and he was arrested,” Mtshali said. His hands were reported to have been covered in blood. The man was expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of business robbery and murder. The children were still traumatised and would receive counselling, Mtshali said.

Cases of sexual assault remain considerably higher among school females, it has been established, and more male pupils are being targeted to sexual assault. This was the findings of a national school violence study that was discussed during a summit on school discipline held in Boksburg on Friday and Saturday.Department officials, researchers, school governing body associations, teacher unions and religious organisations attended the event. The event was hosted by the Department of Basic Education and was named ‘Discipline in schools revisited, striking

a balance between ethics and legislation’.Basic Education Deputy Minister Enver Surty said teachers had lost the authority to deal with discipline in schools since the banning of corporal punishment.“It’s hard to teach in certain areas and teachers are required to do things beyond their duties to teach,” he said. Studies have shown that at least 20 percent of children are being bullied at school and the psychological fear, among other factors, is believed to be harming their academic performance.Enver said a partnership between the department and the SAPS had led to about 15 000 schools being adopted by police

stations and police officers serving on the schools’ discipline subcommittees. Forty four percent of the pupils said they had had something stolen from them while they were at school in the past year and 22 percent said they had experienced other forms of violence, excluding theft. Six percent said they had been assaulted and almost 5 percent reported that they had been sexually assaulted at school.Burton said the rate at which sexual assault incidents were happening at schools was higher than what occurred at the pupils’ homes.

The acting Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Lesetja Mothiba, the National Commissioner, Gen Riah Phiyega and Gauteng Police Management held a conference at the Isando Old Vehicle Safeguarding Unit for the liquor and banishment of counterfeit DVDs yesterday.

Motivation: There are 93 346 litres of liquor and 342 187 counterfeit DVDs that was destroyed. The liquor and DVDs were seized

in the Gauteng Province during various operations especially during the Operation Duty Calls, during the festive season. Many of the DVDs were seized during operations especially in the JHB, Hillbrow and Pretoria Cluster. The operations were successful. The selling of counterfeits, CDs and DVDs has a huge economic impact as it takes away revenue from the artists and producers as their products are copied and sold fraudulently on the streets.

DO’S• Always travel with the car doors locked.• Keep all windows closed or, at most, not open more than would allow a hand to fit through.• Leave enough room between your car and the one in front to avoid being boxed in. Make sure you can see where the tyres of the other car make contact with the road.• Remain in your car if it is hit from behind. Inspect any damage only once you are sure it is not a hijack attempt.• Attract the attention of other motorists or pedestrians if you think you are in danger. You can use the hooter, flash your lights, put your emergency lights on or shout. Be aware of anybody who approaches your car or is loitering near traffic lights, stop streets, parking areas or your driveway.• Constantly monitor what vehicles are travelling behind, ahead and next to you. More than one vehicle could be involved and they could be setting a trap to stop you. If you are suspicious of vehicles around you take (responsible) action to get out of the situation.

• If you suspect that you are being followed, you should ideally drive to the nearest police station. If this is not possible, drive to another safe place but don’t go home.• If approached by a suspicious-looking person, especially at night or in lonely areas, drive off quickly from a stop street or intersection, always heeding traffic danger, skipping a stop sign or red light remains an offence and the onus is on you to prove that your action was in self-defence.• At unusual or unexpected roadblocks, keep windows closed and doors locked and ask for the police or traffic officer’s identity card. Show your identity document to them through the window. Trust works both ways. The same goes for being stopped by traffic officers at speed traps.• On long journeys only stop overnight at safe places. Parking next to the road or in a parking area overnight is not safe. Report any suspicious looking strangers and vehicles to the police. Give a description of the occupants and their vehicle.

Storm water no longer an issue

Chantal [email protected]

Meet Clr Andre Du Plessis, the councillor for Ward 23 (Atasville, Impala Park, Benero Park, Clearwater, Parkhaven, Kempton Park, Farrarmare). For 13 years Clr Du Plessis has been battling to get the storm water drainage system under control and has finally succeeded. The construction took two years to complete and now residents in Star Road and Brentwood Road, whose homes would normally become flooded during rainy seasons, are not affected in anyway. The main affected areas, due to them being on the bottom of a leak line, were Brentwood Park to Mercury Street. Service delivery, which appears to be a major issue in every area pertaining to Boksburg, was again brought up as an issue. Clr Du Plessis did stress that this is a process that goes through many stages before any sort of resolve can occur. “It is frustrating for me too. The residents need to understand that I do everything I can but there are many chains that these processes go through, so I am sorry and I just ask for some patience,” said Clr Du Plessis. Another issue that was brought to tame TIMES initially by a concerned resident was the parks. Clr Du Plessis said that the DA are trying to get the parks rehabilitated and to create some sort of recreational area. Budgets are applied for, but a sufficient number of community members backing up reasons behind the need for the money is required. At times they are cut, leading to certain things taking longer to fix. “I do sympathise with residents and I do try to make everyone happy,” said Clr Du Plessis.

“My main priority right now is the lives of residents. In January 2005 the Nortjie family were badly affected by flooding in their home. The children, at a stage, would start packing their bags when it started to rain because they were so afraid they would have to run out of their home to be safe. The children had to be rescued from their home in 2005, with storm water reaching the beds that they were sleeping on,” Clr Du Plessis told tame TIMES. Clr Du Plessis said that stage one, from Brentwood Park to Rebel Fruit n Veg, of the problem has been completed and storm water no longer lead to flooded houses. Funds became available in order for Andre to be able to implement the slanted river banks and water drainage from the roads, to enable all storm water to accumulate in one place. As more funds become available stage two can commence. According to Clr Du Plessis this should start as soon as the rainy season is over. The plan for stage two will involve the bridge opposite Rebel Fruit n Veg being removed. The bridge is very low and rubbish and reeds tend to block the flow of water, leading to flooding. They will then build a higher bridge to allow for water to flow and remove all weeds and reeds. Stage two is similar to stage one. “We have a very vibrant community who are very hands-on and I am grateful for that. The community does so well together.”Potholes was another issue discussed and Clr Du Plessis explained that the contractors used are not always legitimate and are appointed by tenders, things that are out of his control. Clr Du Plessis has enquired about this and he

is aware of the issue. If the potholes are not fixed correctly, they have to do a supervised job and fix it without remuneration. The fixing of roads is something that should, from the start, be a supervised job. However, this is hardly done.

KNOW THE LAW: • It is not legal to open a manhole to alleviate excess water or to remove the water from your yard.• It is a legal prerequisite for water to flow through your yard from your neighbour’s property. No blockage of any sort is allowed.

PROUD: Clr Andre Du Plessis pointing out the working storm water flow system.

DANGEROUS: A pothole the size of a car. The pothole was filled with water and could easily be missed. Be careful when driving along Brentwood Road.

WASTAGE: A drain overflowing along Van Dyk Road on Wednesday due to the heavy rainfall.

CONTROL: The drainage helps with the excess storm water during severe rain falls.

IGNORANCE: This sign has been up for 10 years, yet people are still illegally dumping here.

SOLUTION: Now the storm water can accumulate in one area withour causing problems

Eskom load-shedding schedulesWhen there is not enough electricity available to meet the demand of all Eskom customers, it could be necessary to interrupt supply to certain areas. This is called load-shedding. It is different from a power outage, which could occur for

several other reasons.Eskom’s statement in the previous week expressed that although load-shedding is a last resort measure, it is a serious possibility at this stage. According to Andrew Etzinger the relentless rain is a major factor that is

affecting Eskom’s coal supplies. A call to business and to ordinary citizens has been made by the power utility to observe the following advice so that power demand can be lowered, especially during peak hours. 1. Switching off your geysers, electric

heaters and pool pumps from 17:00 to 21:00 every day2. Switching off unnecessary appliances and lighting*For Brakpan’s schedule, please visit our website www.tametimes.co.za

Tax relaxaTion for reTirees A typical scenario for most South Africans who reach retirement age is facing the common question: Do you deposit pension money into an annuity fund, or do you take a lump-sum to pay off any remaining long term debt? While many people follow the lump-sum route, the one backlash is the high amount of tax one would pay on such a transaction. The budget speech had good news for pensioners, as the relaxation offers the pensioner a big saving compared to the previous structure. For example, a pensioner will enjoy a saving of R44 500 on a R1m withdrawal under the new tax structure.

feeling The Tank?Filling up a 60 litre tank with 95 octane petrol today will cost you R405.60, more than it cost only six years ago. Add the impending 12c per litre Road Accident Fund levy (effective as of 2 April 2014) then price to fill up will be R853.80.This calls for some fuel saving considerations; we have thought of a few little changes to help make a little difference.

1. Carpool with friends/colleagues: This could afford you a sizable saving. Firstly you would automatically save from sharing petrol costs, then secondly you would save because this will prevent spontaneous trips.2. shop online: In terms of petrol savings shopping online will offer you a 100% saving. Another benefit of shopping online is another saving on the ‘spontaneous’3. reduce weight: Why travel around with a boot full of shoes and handbags if you are not a shoe and handbag sales person? 4. Check tyre pressure regularly: It will take a few minutes out of your travelling time, but it will also keep you away from the filling station a little longer. Also, the added benefit of properly inflated tyres will prolong the lifespan of your tyre, which translates to a saving in the pocket.

The trial of oscar pistorious has had many glued to their screens as the search for the true happenings of 14 february 2013 continues. The first week has been filled with controversy, ranging from the unforgivable hiring of incompetent translators, media contravening the directives of the court and a witness’ ill health leading to the court’s early adjournment.Oscar has pleaded not guilty to all four counts that he was charged with, including the murder of Reeva Steenkamp. Although Pistorious pleaded not guilty, he does not deny that he fired the four bullets that resulted in the death of his then girlfriend.Throughout the first week of the trial, Pistorious’ legal team tried the witnesses’ versions of the happenings as presented in their statements. Advocate Barry Roux questioned witnesses aggressively, leaving no doubt to the reason why he is nicknamed Pit bull.

A man never without his gun

Towards the end of the week, the prosecution team led by Gerry Nel gained some ground as the witnesses began to remain firm in their testimonies. One witness described Pistorious

as a man who never went anywhere without his gun. Oscar’s spokesperson confirmed on Friday (7 March) afternoon that Oscar will be testifying in the case.

“Hierdie is ‘n unieke konsep,” sê Swart.

Dois Amigos: a fusion of traditional Portuguese and South African cuisine.

Welcomed with open and friendly arms, owners Roy van Loggerenberg and Des Joubert sit socialising at their newly renovated bar top. Dois Amigo’s invited tame TIMES to taste their delicious food and drinks as well as enjoy their many local supporters with their exciting karaoke evening. For starters a delicious round of delectable snails, trinchado, chicken giblets and Chirico was served, every bite better than the next. For mains an interesting and beautifully presented round of Portuguese steak, prawns, pork chops and chicken schnitzel was served. All came with sauces, salads, chips etc.

The prawns tasted better than more well-known restaurants and are very affordable. The pork chops were cooked

impeccably and tasted like

heaven on earth. The steak was delivered exactly as ordered and cooked to perfection.

The creamy mushroom sauce that came along with the chicken schnitzel complimented the chicken to mouth-watering standards. Lastly, the desserts were to die for: granadilla cheese cake and chocolate mousse cake, both with a coconut cookie base. Thank you to the waitress Janine Miller for the excellent service and for being so informative.Dois Amigos’ venue is available for small functions, there’s a happy hour every Tuesday from 16:00-18:00, and a Sunday buffet every first and last Sunday of each month. During 2007, a Spur franchisee had an idea to start a competition in which the first rugby teams of primary schools could partake, as part of their pre-season training. This competition was extended during 2009 to include their first netball teams. Thus young boys and girls were given the opportunity to prepare in the pre-season against competitive teams.

All games will and have already taken place on 4, 6, 11 and 14 March on the sport grounds of Hoërskool Oosterlig.Twelve branches of Spur restaurants will identify primary schools in their areas and invite them to partake in the Spur 16. Each participant receives tog bags and t-shirts branded with the Spur logo, which is handed out at the participating Spur restaurants.

During November of the previous year, a draw was held during a formal function where it was decided which schools would compete during the first round. During 2013 this draw was broadcasted live on East Rand Stereo. After the first round teams will be divided into two pools, a plate and shield category. This process will take place over three days until a plate and shield winner is decided on the last day (Friday, 14 March). The rest of the teams are then classified in positions ended. On the final day East Rand Stereo will broadcast directly from Hoërskool Oosterlig. This competition is characterised by the exceptional sportsmanship in which competing schools compete against each other.

NOTICE

Sunward Park competes at Future ChampionsSunward Park will be the only Boksburg school competing at the 2014 Future Champions Gauteng International Tournament later this month. The Boksburg-based place of learning won their ticket to the International Tournament, having come through both the Gauteng Schools Cup and the Gauteng Cup proper. Coach Thabo Tiki, who has been with the side for five years, said their success is no accident and that it is the result of hard work and determination from the players.“We train from Monday to Friday and play as many games against top schools and academies as we can,” Tiki said. “As a school we try to run our football programme like an academy as well.Tiki believes he does have players in his group who could potentially have long careers in the Premier Soccer League, or potentially even abroad.Sunward Park is a partner of the Diambars programme, which seeks to assist African players with starting careers in Europe. It was started by former France World Cup winners Patrick Vieira and Bernard Lama in 2000.“The Diambars Academy in South Africa is situated on the school grounds. Our Sunward Park team that will be competing in the Future Champions Gauteng International Tournament is made up of some of these players, but mixed in with other learners who attend the school.”The most famous player to come out of Sunward Park is former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana defender Gavin Lane, who was part of the 1995

African Champions League-winning side with the Buccaneers.Sunward Park has been drawn in Group C at the Future Champions Gauteng International Tournament, along with defending champions Club Tijuana from Mexico, Nigerian side Saki West and the Aspire Academy from Qatar. The tournament will be played from March 24-29 at the Nike Training Centre in Pimville, Soweto.
