First of all, I would like to extend a warm (no pun intended) welcome back to BBQ! It seems like it’s been ages since our June meeting, and on the other hand, the summer is just blazing by! I hope you all had a wonderful July, and are re-energized, and ready to take on another year of sharing, caring, learning and quilting! As I ponder the year ahead, my mind keeps going back to traditions. Some of you have long-standing family traditions; some of you are just start-ing out creating your own traditions, and some of us are learning to combine the two. As families move on, get older, and new families are formed. Tradi-tions, whether old or new, or combined, reflect the symbols of who we are and what we do. Our own quilting, our quilt guilds, and groups share many traditions across the board, no matter what group or guild you belong to, or how and why you learned to quilt. One tradition that most guilds share is the celebration of their 40 th anni-versary with a Ruby Quilt display. Keep in mind that BBQ will also carry on this tradition as we prepare for our 40th anniversary in 2023. Goodness…it seems so far away, doesn’t it? More on this tradition later! GET YOUR TICKETS BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!!

The August BBQ Membership meeting is your last opportunity to check out Raffle tickets to sell before the quilt show. It is also your last opportunity to buy tickets for yourself so you won ’t have to spend valua-ble time at the quilt show filling out ticket stubs. Come by the Quilt Show table in the middle of the fellow-

ship hall at the August Membership meeting to check out tickets to sell, and buy a WHOLE STACK for your-self!

The Gift Garden Needs/Wants You! We still have a few slots left for those who would like to try making a little money by selling items at the Gift Garden. We love our returning vendors, but love to have new folks. As the more variety we have, the better the Gift Garden looks, and the more we sell. Who knows, someone may be looking for exactly what you have made!

There's still time. You don't have to have your items for sale ready until September 27th, the day before the quilt

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE QUILT SHOW

DID YOU KNOW that volunteers get free admission to the quilt show? DID YOU KNOW that all volunteers’ names will be entered in a drawing for some great gifts, includ-ing the new EQ8? Thank you to all of the members who have already signed up. But we really do need the help of as many members as possible to put on the outstanding event quilters have come to expect

from us. Please come to the Quilt Show table in the middle of the fellowship hall (just look for the raffle quilt) and pick as many slots as you want to work. Or you can contact Laura Lee. [email protected]

ATTENTION SMALL GROUP CHALLENGE ENTRIES

Do you have questions about any of the forms or documents for the Quilt Show? Lois Alice is willing to travel and

have a question/answer session with your group. Lois will also help you fill out your quilt entry forms for those that

don’t have a computer. Get your entries done early and correctly! Please give Lois a call to set up a date and time.

You can reach Lois at 208-249-4277 or [email protected]

VINTAGE DISPLAY AT THE QUILT SHOW

The theme for his year's vintage quilt display will be "It's a Quilt When It's Quilted",

focusing on the ways a top becomes a comforter (by tying) or a quilt (by quilting),

and finishing the edges.

If you have a vintage quilt or comforter you’d like to show,

Contact Connie Emmen [email protected] or [email protected] or by phone at 208-336-9919

Quilts for Kids is looking forward to the new year! We still have lots of donated fabric and will have new kits available at the August general meeting. In 2017-2018, 256 quilts were donated to the lo-cal hospitals and Angel Flight. Monica Clements will head up the committee for 2018-2019 with support from Jan Lundine and Phyl-lis Kaiser. We are looking forward to another great year and can’t wait for a new batch of your awesome quilts to distribute.

FAT QUARTER DRAWING

We hope everyone is enjoying their summer, especially the weather! It's too hot for us, so staying indoors and getting work done inside the house. This is a good time if you're staying in-doors to sew and finish a quilt! The theme for the month of August is SUMMER FUN. Choose a fat quarter that depicts your idea of summer. It could be an activity (picnics, camping, water activities, traveling, the beach, fishing, hiking, etc.). Should be interesting to see what you can come up with. Please be sure your fat quarter is 100% cot-ton and measures 18" x 22". Thanks for participat-ing! Steve and Flo

The Silent Auction block for August will be Shaded 4 Patch (attached).

The final tally for the 2017/ 2018 guild year is listed below.

Case for Smiles Pillowcases: 255

Chemo Caps: 34

Pretty Pockets: 174

Porta Cath Pillows: 262

Adult Clothing Protectors: 42

Christmas Stockings: 100

All of the patterns can be found under Special Projects on the BBQ website. Tomorrow's Hope is the recipient of our Adult Clothing Protectors. Special thanks go to Connie Emmen for preparing the kits for the ACP's, the BSU colors are a favorite!

There is still a need for chemo caps. Materials more comfortable for hot weather would be appreciated this time of year. We suggest you google "chemo cap sewing pattern" which will bring you many free patterns and styles of scarves and hats. McCalls 6521 and Kwik Sew K3481 are good patterns specifically for cancer patient needs. If you like to knit and crochet, you can get a head start on hats for Fall and Winter. Ravelry.com has 623 free patterns for chemo caps made of yarn.

The BBQ raffle quilt was shown in June at the downtown branch of the Boise Public Library, Connie Emmen loaned one of the Quilts of Valor quilts to be shown in July and Kate White's Abigail will be on display in August. Thank you to everyone who has participated in Special Projects during my time as chair of the committee. I have enjoyed getting to know each of you and have appreciated your overwhelming commitment to all of the projects that we support. I am turning over the reins to Gail Vaughan, Susan Pirrong, Gwen Smith, and Nancy England for the next guild year. Thank you and I look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting!

Schoo l Ho use Maureen Stevens

We have had a lot of fun and informative classes this past year in our School-

house. In the coming months we will have 8 more classes to delight and educate

all our BBQ members. The Schoolhouse Committee has met and come up with a

roster for the coming year, and the schedule will be posted sometime this next

month.

Our first class will be Saturday, October 20 at Boise Rigging Supply, 6750 West

Victory Road, Boise. Donna Hale will be teaching a class on Quilt As You Go.

Supply list and sign-up sheet will be available at the September membership meeting.

Thanks to all of you who signed on the Survey Sheet for Future Classes. We had 80 people give us their

in-put. We very much appreciate it. In our list of classes we are trying to accommodate those classes that

got the most votes. Stay tuned to see which classes were the most popular.

We will be displaying some new book additions to the library at the August Membership meet-ing. Please note, these books will only be on display in August. They will become available to check out at the September membership meeting. We look forward to seeing you.

August Boise Basin Quilters Guild Member Meeting Program

The Treasure Valley Applique Society will give the program for the August Boise

Basin Quilters Guild Member Meeting. Anna Lenard will present the history of the

Treasure Valley Applique Society. Members will share quilts with the audience.

Treasure Valley Applique Society now meets at Joann Fabrics (upstairs) on Milwau-

kee. The group has meetings every third Wednesday of each month at 10 am to 12

pm. A typical meeting involves show-and-tell and a demonstration. This coming year, the members are tak-

ing turns sharing their different applique techniques.

The Treasure Valley Applique Society does not collect dues, but when money is needed for projects,

teacher, etc. quilt blocks and quilts are made and raffled off. The group has traveled west to Baker City, Or-

egon and east to Rupert, Idaho to participate in various quilt classes. National teachers for workshops are

also brought in, such as Kim Diehl and Boise’s own Joyce Cambron.

June 2018: 4 cards sent July 2018: 1 card sent - thus far.

Sew By Numbers: Maple Leaf

Raid the scrap box and get ready for Fall. Make this beautiful Maple Leaf in several colors. The paper-piecing for this block is done in small chunks and then sewn together to make a magnificent 8 1/2” unfinished block.

Start work on your quilt now for next year’s quilt show. You only have to use one of the presented blocks to display your quilt in a special section

of the show. June, July, and August’s blocks are on the website with tem-plates.

Thanks,

Pat Kluckhohn (288-4295) Kathy England, Cindy Sharp

Madeleine Trainor here. I’m looking forward to presenting the wonderful quilts from our members through Show and Tell. This is a new job for me and I’ll need some help and probably patience. If you

can help me out give me a call at 208-484-1622 or a line at [email protected] I will need a lot of patience at the August meeting, because Quilt Show Entries are due by the meet-ing, August 16. I’ll be wearing two hats so we’ll see what happens. This is where I encourage you to enter your quilt(s) early online at our website or by mail. Thanks!

Block Of the Month Janice Black

Block of the Month

The main goal for Block of the Month this year is for you to be able to try out different techniques. If you love one, you can

use it to make a whole quilt for yourself. If you don’t love it, no worries . . . you only need to finish one block! Of course, each

month one lucky person will win everyone’s practice blocks.

One of our August blocks will be

a very easy, nearly math-free block

called “Log Cabin Frames.” It shows

you how to use a traditional log-cabin

technique to frame any special fea-

ture fabric.

The other August block is a disap-

pearing pinwheel block that gives you a simple method for making pinwheels, then lets you

transform the pinwheel into a churn dash. Fun!

We’ll be kicking off a brand new Facebook page this year called “BBQ BOM.” It’s complete-

ly optional, but will be a place where you can ask questions, get feedback, and upload photos of your blocks in progress.

Barbara Derby and Petra Branstad will be helping with Block of the Month this year and have been hard at work making sam-

ple blocks. BOM patterns are only $1, so we’re hoping you’ll stop by the BOM table at our first guild meeting and buy both of

them!

Outreach Connie Emmen

Outreach Wow, it seems like we were just wearing jackets, had the heat on in the house, and were looking

forward to electing the 2018-19 BBQ officers only yesterday (or maybe the day before)! Now, suddenly, you are reading the August newsletter, and in a few days, attending the first BBQ member meeting of the year on Aug. 16th. To be a BBQ Ambassador, just invite someone to attend the membership meeting and

or visit our website (http://boisebasinquilters.org). A warm smile and talking about BBQ is a great ice-breaker at the cutting counter or the check-out line, or while looking for fabrics and notions for your cur-rent or next project. That's how new friends are made! See you soon. Quilts of Valor

Thanks to the generosity of BBQ members and friends, we continue to have the quilts to award to Treasure Valley Military Veterans and active military personnel touched by war. Friday, September 28th @ 3:30pm, we will be awarding six Quilts of Valor at the quilt show in an open ceremony for anyone attending the quilt show to watch at that time.

To make a Quilt of Valor, use red, white and/or blue 100% cotton fabrics in the piecing pattern of your choice, sizing it to approximately 60"x80". Out of respect for trauma victims, avoid prints that repre-sent explosions and piecing patterns that resemble the flag. You can donate a completed quilt, and we will

quilt and bind your donated top. Contact Connie Emmen at [email protected] or

[email protected] or 208.336.9919) to set up a time to pick up your donation.

To nominate someone to receive a QOV, go to www.qovf.org, click on Take Action at the top of the page, and select Request a Quilt from the dropdown menu. The Quilts of Valor Foundation will take it from there. Thanks again for your support, and thanks in anticipation of your support in the coming 2018-19 BBQ guild year. Bag of the Month (the BotM Club)

Okay, all you Baggies - the 1st BotM (pronounced "bottom") pattern will be available at the August membership meeting. It's easy to be a Baggie:

Buy the BotM pattern for $1 at the BBQ membership meeting; buy only the patterns you want to make; $.50 goes to the BBQ general fund and $.50 goes into the BotM Prize Pot.

Make as many bags as you want, inspired by the pattern - your fabric, your size, your bling. At the next membership meeting, register 1 bag you made from the pattern that month; you

keep the bag; register one bag per Baggie per month. At the June 2019 membership meeting, we'll split the BotM Prize Pot into 2 or 3 (depending

on how much is in it) and draw the winners from the Baggies that registered bags during the year.

Sound like fun? Bring $1 to the August 16th BBQ membership meeting, buy the pattern, and, like mag-ic, you'll be a Baggie! Ends for Friends

We're starting our 6th year of making scrap bag pillows for sheltered pets waiting to find their for-ever homes and families. You can help make it the best year yet this way:

make a bag from 2 fat quarters (approximately, not much bigger or smaller) fill it 1/2-3/4 full with fabric scraps, cut up old linens or clothing (please remove buttons, zip-

pers, bling, anything firm or hard), thread, batting (avoid polyester "puffy" batting), or yarn. Sew it closed and donate it at any BBQ membership meeting.

It’s A Quilt When It’s Quilted @ The Quilt Show

This year's vintage quilt display will focus on examples of ways pieced tops have been made into quilts and comforters. This will be a wonderful opportunity for you to show your quilt/s whether tied, hand or machine quilted, with any examples of edge finishing. Please contact Connie Emmen at

([email protected] or [email protected] or 208.336.9919) to reserve a place in the dis-play for your quilt/s and/or volunteer to work in this special display during the show. Thanks, and it's going to be a great show.

Welcome back to a brand new Guild Year!

We have some new things going on in Membership this year, and I am excited to share these with you.

New renewal process: On or about the 15th of each month, those members who’s Memberships are due to expire the following month, will receive an email reminder to pay dues. The reminder will include instructions for renewal and a link to pay online. A second reminder will be sent on or about the first of the renewal month. If dues have not been received by the last day of the renewal month, the account will be deactivated until dues are received and processed. This means that you will no longer have access to the Guild Website, nor access to Schoolhouse Classes, Workshops, Library, Programs, free patterns and all the rest of the fun that the Guild offers. Don’t miss out! Be sure to watch for your reminder email, coming from [email protected] and follow the instructions as soon as it arrives.

New Membership Cards: Once your renewal is received and processed, a new Membership Card will be gener-ated. Our new cards for 2018-19, have a vibrant appearance that reflects our current promotional materials and will include some important information for your convenience. On the front of the card, you will find your Membership number in the bottom right-hand corner. You will need this number to complete your Quilt Show entries online. In addition, the bottom of the card shows your new Membership expiration date in red, so you will know when to watch for your reminder email. In addition, you will find Meeting information and important contact information printed on the back of your Membership card. You may find this information helpful if you are in need of assistance. Membership Card Pick-up: New cards can be picked up at the general Membership Meeting, held on the third Thursday of each month. If you have joined or renewed your membership online at least one day prior to this meeting, your membership card will be available. Mailed forms with payment must have been received at least one week before the meeting. To pick up your card, come to the back of the Hospitality Room. Our table is in front of the stage, next to the Library carts. Leave your old card in the plastic holder but remove it from the clip on your lanyard. Exchange it for your new card. Easy as that! We will take your old card and recycle it. Joining or Renewing your Membership: To join or renew your Membership, please follow the instructions be-low. Cost is $35 per year. ONLINE is preferred. It is the quickest, the easiest and will get you activated immediately. Go to the BBQ Web-site and scroll to the bottom of the page. Click on the 2018-2019 Membership Online Application (PayPal/Credit Card/Debit Card Fill out the form, click on the “Submit Registration” button at the bottom of the form and you will be taken to the checkout cart where you can pay using either your credit card or Pay Pal account. You will receive an email receipt and you are done! MAIL-IN will take a little longer to process. Go to the BBQ Website and scroll to the bottom of the page. Click on the bottom line 2018-2019 Membership Application to Print. This will download a PDF form to your com-puter that can be easily typed on, using your computer keyboard and then printed. Make your check out to “Boise Basin Quilters” or “BBQ” and send with the completed form to the address shown on the form. We must receive your form and payment at least one week prior to the Membership Meeting, for you to pick up your new Membership Card in the same month. AT THE MEETING. You can bring your completed form along with your check made out to “Boise Basin Quilt-ers” or “BBQ” to the Membership table at any general Membership Meeting. Forms can also be filled out at the table, but it will save a lot of time if you can bring it with your check already completed. Your new Membership Card will not be available until the following month. Neighborhood Lists: Lists of Members who live in the same areas are now available to pick up at the Member-ship table during any general Membership meeting. These are for the purpose of contacting others in your area who may wish to car-pool to meetings and activities. This is a fun way to get to know your fellow quilters who are also your neighbors! There are many who either can’t or don’t wish to drive and many who are happy to drive and willing to offer their services. Get together and join us!
