CONTROLKEY-SWITCH & FORCE-KEY
15
The performer takes care of the articulation handling for you, based on the way you play. If you would like to direct the performer to play something different to the articulation chosen, you can use a FORCE-KEY for a quick alternative or a KEY-SWITCH to alter the performance for a longer duration.
KEY-SWITCHLights up when pressed, will override the performer until another articulation is selected or that key-switch is pressed again, returning control back to the Virtual Performer.FORCE-KEYLights up when held down, will override the performer until the key is released, once released the Virtual Performer will regain control. Staccato, Spiccato and Pizzicato Force-Key can be clicked to switch between Force-Key or Key-Switch.
BOW CONTROLThese work exactly the same as Force-Keys but have their own icon for bow control. The exception is for RE-BOW which can be clicked or CC assigned as it is a toggle:

ARTICULATION
LAYOUT
Tailor the Library to your specific work-flow, assign slots you have selected to any articulation, mood or bow type. Each mood can have its own unique layout, so as you switch through Moods, you can have different articulations assigned to Key-Switches/Force-Keys, allowing you to re-use a single midi key multiple times.
17
LAYOUTARTICULATION SELECTION
18
The LAYOUT allows you to change which articulations are placed under which mood. Moods can have different articulation setups from each other and share midi key assignments, so as you change through the moods, you can reuse the same midi key to trigger different articulations.
ARTICULATION SLOTClick to open the LAYOUT page. You may assign a different Articulation, Mood, Legato or Bow type to the selected slot. You can only edit one slot at a time. Each layout can be unique to each Mood
SELECTION DROP DOWNClick to choose a different Selection from the drop down menu, you will have a description of the selected Articulation. Click on ASSIGN to replace/Add the articulation to the selected slot, or click CANCEL.Click here for the full list of articulations.
CONTROLLINGTHE VIRTUAL PERFORMER
19
There are Seven factors that control the Bohemian Cello, but don’t worry, as most of this is taken care of by our Virtual performer or you can choose to manually override the virtual performer if you so wish.
1MOOD
2VELOCITY
3ON BOW
The mood you have selected overrides the entire virtual performer play style.
How hard you hit the keys affects dynamic.
Overlapping the notes plays our vast array of on-bow legatos
4BOW CHANGE
5BOW TYPE
6BOW MOTION
Not overlapping the notes (within Release Time which is set to 300ms) plays our vast array of bow-change legatos. Play over the set release time, and the Cellist will perform a bow lift and begin a new phrase.
Virtual Performer chooses articulation/legato or user can manually force articulations.
Virtual Performer decides bow motion, up bow, down bow, re-bow or user can manually force bowing.
7PLAY SPEED The speed at which you play will trigger different behavior, playing a specific way fast, will perform trills or runs.
LAYOUT ARTICULATION MENU 1/6[LONG ARTICULATIONS]
20
ARC Midi Key Default: C0A sustained note with Crescendo and a very soft start. Ideal for longer opening notes.
MID-ARC Midi Key Default: C#0Similar to Arc but with faster Crescendo and Diminuendo towards the end. The Mid Arc climaxes in the middle. More suitable for mid phrases or faster paced pieces.
SUSTAIN Midi Key Default: D0Level dynamic sustain, suitable for mid phrases or faster bow changes.
DIMINUENDO Midi Key Default: D#0A sustain with gradually decreasing volume, currently the longest bow. Ideal for end of phrase.
MARCATO Midi Key Default: E0Sustain with a sharp and immediate attack, ideal for faster paced parts or escalation of dramatic emotion.
LAYOUT ARTICULATION MENU 2/6[LEGATO TYPE]
21
ON-BOW ¼ LEGATO Midi Key Default: G0A form of on bow legato that uses purely fingered or string changed legato with a short note after the transition. Ideal for faster pace emotion or if no slur is desired.
ON-BOW ½ LEGATO Midi Key Default: F#0The most expressive of all legatos, with a mid length bow after the transition. Featuring fingered as well as pronounced slurs with dynamic variation. Ideal for expressive parts.
ON-BOW WHOLE LEGATO Midi Key Default: F0Whole Legato, the slowest of all the legatos featuring both fingered and slurred in lower dynamics. Offers the longest on bow sustain after transition and is ideal for quiet and emotional playing.
BOW CHANGE Midi Key Default: F6Forcing bow change will mean that every new overlapped note will use bow changed legato instead of on bow.
PORTAMENTO Midi Key Default: C6Is a slide between a note and a new note on overlapped legato. The force key needs to be pressed, like with all others, prior to the transition (new note overlap). This legato should be used rarely.
LAYOUT ARTICULATION MENU 3/6[SHORT ARTICULATIONS]
22
TRILL/RUN Midi Key Default: G#0Fingered or string changed on bow legato, ideal for fast moving notes.
STACCATO Midi Key Default: A0Short, sharp detached note, often used in works of Vivaldi and Mozart.
SPICCATO Midi Key Default: A#0Short notes using a bouncy bow, gritty and great for atmospheric writing or fast runs.
PIZZICATO Midi Key Default: B0Notes plucked by the Cellist.
LAYOUT ARTICULATION MENU 4/6[BOW CONTROL]
23
DOWN-BOW Midi Key Default:G6Manually force the bow direction down, by holding down this force key, overriding theVirtual Performer.
UP-BOW Midi Key Default: G#6Manually force the bow direction up, by holding down this force key, overriding theVirtual Performer.
RE-BOW Midi Key Default: D6Automatically re-bows just prior to the end of the note, can be switched off by clicking the re-bow force key icon in the user interface, switching it to manual re-bowing.
CHORDS Midi Key Default: A6Chords deactivate any of the Legato, therefore enabling poly note performance. These can also be used for double stops.
LAYOUT ARTICULATION MENU 5/6[MOODS]
24
IMPROV Midi Key Default: A-1Ideal for all tempos and a great way to start playing with our Virtual Performer.
Improv will offer the most variety in selecting our on bow legatos, as well as utilizing all variations of our Bow-Changed Legatos to allow the player to be always in phrase.
This mood is very expressive yet flexible, ideal for mid tempo pieces.
CZARDAS Midi Key Default: A#-1The most aggressive of our moods, always opening the beginning of the phrase with a Marcato.
Leans heavily towards faster legatos and is ideal for faster paced energetic pieces in higher dynamics.
EMOTIVE Midi Key Default: B-1Offering the softest of our moods, ideal for the slower paced pieces in lower dynamics.
Leaning towards a feathery performance with a nice but not over pronounced slur and slower paced legatos, whilst still allowing for faster paced parts.
“A performer mood is a musical style employed by the virtual performer, the mood affects what type of legato and articulations the Virtual Performer may use to evoke a certain style of playing”
Embellish and evolve the Virtual Performers mood by seamlessly employing different key-switch or force-key articulations, as soon as you released the forced behavior, the performer continues seamlessly with their performance.
LAYOUT ARTICULATION MENU 6/6[LASTING BOW]
25
LASTING BOW Midi Key Default: G1An experimental bow extender, which enables you to prolong the bow length following a Legato.
To apply, press this force key prior to the interval and hold down during the interval, the final note will be extended by near seamlessly merging two bows together, giving you a longer lasting bow.
NONESelect none to leave the slot on the user interface empty, although you may hide articulations from the interface, they will always remain assigned to a midi key.
