THE CITY #THECITY#
The name Bodrum has changed manytimes over the years. The city was initiallycalled Halikarnassos by the satrapMausollos. After his death - in 352 BC – hewas buried in the mausoleum which is oneof the seven wonders of the ancient world.
Halikarnassos eventually becamePetronion, which then became Bodrum inTurkish.
In the 1920s, Bodrum was so remote thatit was used as a place of exile. Perhaps thisis why the city attracted artists andbohemians and in the 1970s Bodrumdeveloped into “Turkey’s St. Tropez” with abusy entertainment and night life.Numerous Turkish celebrities live in theholiday apartments in and around the city.
The city centre is small and easy tonegotiate and most things are withinwalking distance. The city’s main streetruns parallel with the water and the sea isnever far away in Bodrum.
Even though Bodrum has developed into ajet-set favourite, it’s easy for the“ordinary” tourist to find the popular placesin the city or the surrounding villages. Inthe shipyard, the traditional tirade andgulet boats are still built and these can behired for short or long trips along thebeautiful coastline.
DO & SEE #DOANDSEE#

Maussollos’s MausoleumOne of the seven wonders of the ancientworld. Few know what the mausoleumreally looked like, but it is believed that thefamous sculptor Skopas was responsiblefor parts of the decoration. But it wascertainly extravagant. Today the visitorcan only see the remains of the building’swalls. Close by are the remains of theancient theatre.
Address: Above the marina
Boat tripsBodrum harbour is full of gulets, traditionalboats that take visitors on long or shorttrips along the beautiful coastline. They arecomfortable vessels with large rear decksand good cabins. There aresmall shady bays everywhere, sometimeswith simple cafés on the beach.

DidymaYou don’t need to be interested in ruins totake a trip to an archeological site. Enroute you’ll experience the countryside andthe journey will take you through smalltowns and villages that you’d otherwisemiss. A few kilometers from the holidayresort of Altinkum, in Yenihisar, liesDidyma, a great temple to Apollo. Didymawas a religious site and the oracle therewas as famous as the oracle of Delphi. Thetemple was destroyed by the Persiansaround 400 BC and the existing ruins datefrom Roman times. The remains of 120columns give an indication of the size ofthe temple.
