Curriculum and Professional Development

Online learning experiences can be both rewarding and challenging. When you engage in professional development within an online environment, the benefits far outweigh those minor challenges. Not only will you gain the insights shared within our workshops, but you will also be afforded the opportunity to network with colleagues at a time that is most convenient for you. For more information call our professional development office at (585) 352-2704. Monroe 2–Orleans BOCES is pleased to offer two classes that will take six weeks to complete. While participants are free during the workshop to take as much time as they need to read through materials, respond to questions, and engage in classroom application, participants should plan on spending approximately two hours per week on workshop content. The weekly online sharing is part of successful course completion.

“The online course that I took last summer on the Common Core Standards provided me with important information about the standards as well as ideas about how they could be implemented in the classroom. The combination of PowerPoint lectures, blogs and applicable activities was presented in a way that maximized my time.”

–William Geraci, Churchville-Chili CSD

“I enjoy taking online staff development because it allows me to receive the staff development on my own time. I don’t have to be out of the classroom or do it after school; I can do it when it fits my schedule best. I also prefer online staff development because I typically get more out of it. Online courses force me to read deeper and think more critically.”

On Solid Ground: Building the Foundation for Successful RTI InterventionsThe underlying premise of RTI is that schools should not delay providing help for struggling students until they fall far enough behind to qualify for special education, but instead should provide timely, targeted, systematic interventions to all students that demonstrate the need. To this end, many school intervention programs fall short of this goal because they lack the proper foundation…that is, the collaborative culture, curricular focus, and on-going student learning data needed to respond effectively when students don’t learn. This presentation will share practical, proven tools that teams can use to put their interventions “on solid ground.” Date: Oct. 23, 2014Time: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.Location: ESC Building, 3599 Big Ridge Road, SpencerportFee: $165 early registration (prior to July 15, 2014) $195 (after July 15, 2014)Presenter: Mike Mattos

Cognitive Coaching IThe mission of Cognitive Coaching is to produce self-directed persons with the cognitive capacity for excellence both independently and as members of a community. Research indicates that teaching is a complex intellectual activity and that teachers who think at higher levels produce students who are higher achieving, more cooperative and better problem solvers. It is the invisible skills of teaching, the thinking processes that underlie instructional decisions, which produce superior instruction. Cognitive Coaching is a research-based model that capitalizes upon and enhances teachers’ cognitive processes.Dates: Oct. 28-29 and Dec. 3-4 The first four days of training will be offered this fall and the additional four in the spring.Time: 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.Location: ESC Building, 3599 Big Ridge Road, Spencerport Fee: $1,500 for four days including books and materialsPresenter: Michael Dolcemascolo

Differentiation and Common Core Standards: What’s the Fit?Common Core standards ask teachers to plan and deliver complex curriculum to a very broad range of learners. The goal is for virtually all students to achieve depth of understanding and the capacity to apply and transfer critical ideas and skills. Differentiation is an instructional model that guides teachers in attending to students’ varied learning needs while focusing on essential curriculum goals. This session will examine how Common Core and differentiation can work together to support academic success for a wide spectrum of learners.Date: Dec. 11, 2014Time: 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.Location: ESC Building, 3599 Big Ridge Road, SpencerportFee: $150Presenter: Carol Ann Tomlinson

Common Core in the Content AreasThe Common Core Literacy Standards developed to address instruction in grades 6-12 social studies, science and technical subjects, present new challenges to teachers. This workshop will help middle and high school content area teachers:- learn about the Standards and how they are similar and

different from previously recommended content-area literacy practices;

- distinguish the types and complexity of texts that content area teachers should be using at each grade level;

- engage students with texts through effective and engaging reading strategies;

- design engaging units that effectively incorporate complex texts;

- meet content-related and literacy-related goals.Participants will receive the book “Common Core Unit by Unit” along with sample Common Core-aligned lesson and unit plans.Date: Oct. 17, 2014Time: 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.Location: ESC Building, 3599 Big Ridge Road, SpencerportFee: $150Presenter: Cheryl Dobbertin

Literacy Services

Curriculum and Professional Development

Are you wondering what type of literacy training will be best for your district? These courses can be tailored to fit the needs of one or more districts. Sessions are one to two days in length and will be held based on presenter availability. We strongly encourage you to consider your needs and contact us about developing a workshop for your district. Please contact the Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Development at (585) 352-2704 or at [email protected] for more details about these services.

Literacy CoachingThis service enables districts to be provided with follow-up support to teachers attending regional workshops. Experienced personnel will help teachers move from watching a demonstration to implementing a new practice with confidence. BOCES 2 staff can model lessons, conduct one-on-one or group meetings on an ongoing basis, provide feedback to teachers who are learning new skills, or assist in the creation and implementation of assessments and lessons. Well-versed in New York State curriculum, literacy coaches can help districts address the increasing demands of NYS ELA standards by working with teachers to provide high-quality literacy instruction.

Differentiated ELA Instruction for Secondary ClassroomsThis two-day workshop is designed specifically for secondary teachers, and will include understanding what differentiated reading instruction looks like in a secondary classroom, and how to further develop students’ reading skills. By the end of the session all participants will understand how to structure the ELA block to include various instructional contexts (whole group, small group, independent work, etc.).

Guided Reading As continuous research reveals its effectiveness, many districts have adopted Guided/Strategic Reading as an instructional strategy in grades K-8. This component of a balanced literacy program is key to strengthening students’ ability to strategically process and comprehend text. Grades K-8 classroom teachers are invited to join BOCES 2 staff developers for a two-day intensive training to learn and/or refine their Guided/Strategic reading practices. Each participant will receive a resource book.

Guided Reading—Level IIThis workshop is intended for teachers who have attended a Guided Reading Workshop and/or are currently using guided reading in their classrooms and are looking to refine their practice. Participants will explore topics such as: analysis of running records, matching texts to readers, developing strong book introductions, effective prompting, integrating writing and word study, utilizing notes/observations to plan future lessons-and progress-monitoring. Participants will have the opportunity to bring data from their current students to use for planning guided reading lessons, as well as the opportunity to watch, discuss and analyze a live or taped lesson.

Literacy Audit Designed to address district-specific questions, this service can provide a “state-of-the state” look at K-12 literacy programs. The audit process can be completed with a focus on curriculum alignment and vertical articulation, resource implementation or assessment results. BOCES 2 staff will work with district personnel to develop a framework that meets district needs.Audit services can include but are not limited to:• Review of curriculum documents with a focus on NYS

grade-level standards • Classroom walk-throughs to address resource and strategy

implementation • Grade-level meetings to investigate teacher perception of

program strengths/needs • Principal interviews to gather leadership data on the state

of the math program• An analysis of professional development opportunities and

its impact on classroom instruction Districts are encouraged to meet with BOCES 2 staff to create an individualized audit process, utilizing only those elements that serve to answer their unique literacy needs. A thorough report with program analysis and needs assessment will be included to participating districts.

Balanced Literacy Overview Excellent teachers of literacy use sophisticated assessment to proactively plan differentiated instruction and flex their available resources to create “just right” lessons for groups of students. Grades K-8 classroom teachers are invited to join three BOCES 2 staff developers for a two-day intensive program to explore and learn to implement the multiple components of a balanced literacy program. Three strands will be offered to provide differentiated learning opportunities in planning for balanced literacy for grades K-2, 3-6 and 7-8 teachers.

Literacy ServicesNYS ELA Module TrainingThis service is available to districts and schools who are utilizing the NYS ELA Modules as a part of their literacy curriculum. Content of the workshop is tailored to the needs of the district and can include but is not limited to: • supporting teachers in gaining understanding of the

foundations and characteristics of the modules; analyzing the modules themselves for the CCSS shifts in instruction; learning to analyze performance assessment data to drive instruction; and learning to implement the modules in their classrooms.

• Supporting leaders supporting those implementing the modules by gaining more clarity about the modules; learning how to use performance assessment data and integrating these protocols into an professional development plan; and learning how to give growth producing feedback to teachers that leads to increased student achievement.

Advanced Balanced LiteracyThis workshop is intended for teachers who have attended a Balanced Literacy Workshop and/or are currently using a Balanced Literacy Approach in their classrooms and are looking to refine their practice. Participants will have the opportunity to “go deeper” into each of the three foundational blocks of a balanced literacy classroom, including: reader’s workshop, which includes interactive read aloud, shared reading, guided reading and independent reading/literature discussion groups; writer’s workshop, which includes interactive writing, guided writing, independent writing and investigations; and language and word study, which includes interactive language and literacy, conventional use of written language and word study. In each block, participants will explore topics such as management, effective grouping and scheduling, using assessment to differentiate instruction for each learner, and progress-monitoring. Participants will move beyond an understanding of procedures to a deeper understanding of how to accelerate the literacy learning of all students.Please note that there will be a one-day workshop for each of the blocks.

Balanced Literacy and the Special Education Student Considerable research supports a comprehensive Balanced Literacy approach to teaching children to read. This program enables special education teachers to fully understand and adapt the Balanced Literacy framework so that students with disabilities can make progress towards meeting the literacy standards along with their non-disabled peers. This workshop, led by experienced special education reading specialists, helps teachers learn to administer diagnostic literacy assessments, and plan and deliver instruction accordingly, in the self-contained, resource and blended settings. Sessions will include: an overview of the reading process; comprehension strategies; effective writing instruction; and effective word study instruction. (one day)

Curriculum and Professional Development

Visiting a Reading Recovery SessionReading Recovery is an intensive early intervention for first grade students who are struggling with literacy. Districts that are interested in exploring the possibility of implementing this program in 2015-16 may contact Stephanie Smyka at (585) 352-2443.In addition, Literacy Lessons, originally a pilot project of The Ohio State University, is now offered through the Monroe 2–Orleans BOCES Reading Recovery Site. It is a three-semester course of study that offers graduate coursework and coaching to intervention specialists who already are special education certified. It makes the most sense to implement this approach for serving special education coded students in districts which already have Reading Recovery implementations.First steps in a successful Reading Recovery and Literacy Lessons implementation include awareness presentations for district faculty and Board members and a visit to a Reading Recovery class behind-the-glass session in the year preceding start up.

Progress Monitoring Assessments This service will allow districts to work with literacy specialists from the BOCES 2 Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Development to examine the district’s plan for universal screening assessments for math and English Language Arts, and to develop effective and aligned progress-monitoring assessments. District personnel will work closely with the BOCES 2 staff to develop a comprehensive plan that will allow the district to track the growth and progress of each student, so that appropriate interventions can be planned and monitored. The progress-monitoring assessments will be closely aligned to the universal screening assessments used by the district. Additionally, BOCES 2 staff will work with the available district technology to allow the district to store, access, chart and graph the data.

Diagnostic Reading EvaluationThis service allows districts to access BOCES 2 personnel (reading specialist, school psychologist, assistive technology specialist and/or speech and language pathologist) to do a complete diagnostic reading evaluation on your most complex reading disabled students. The appropriate BOCES 2 personnel will conduct a complete evaluation using a battery of both formal and informal assessments to provide an in-depth diagnosis of the student. The results of the testing will be analyzed and shared in a Diagnostic Reading Evaluation, which will also include research-based instructional recommendations. BOCES 2 staff will meet with any appropriate district personnel to share the results of the report.
