    RMSI Board Meeting Notes

    Friday, April 19th

    , 2013

    Richmond Main Street

    12:00 pm Richmond Main Street

    Present: Cindy Haden, Arnie Kasendorf, Charlene Smith, Billy Ward, Susan Bain, AdonnaSullivan, Xavier Abrams, JoEl Schultz

    Absent: Maria Alegria

    Staff in attendance: Amanda Elliott

    Agenda: Opening and Overview

    Meeting called to order at 12:20pm by Cindy Haden

    Review & Approval of Minutes and Agenda: Xavier motioned and Charlene seconded toapprove the minutes and agenda with the stated recommended changes from Charlene.

    Administrative Update:

    Staff: Amanda updated the board about the RMSI Administrative Coordinator position. She willforward copies of the job description to board members and would like them to recommend anyqualified candidate. She would like to fill the position by May 15

    th. There are no current

    candidates. Interviews will be held in the next two weeks.

    Financials: Xavier inquired aboutthe city contract of $16,000. Amanda stated that contributionsare still being applied which is why there is a negative balance. Cindy signed the invoice for theremaining balance and it should be received next month. This will be the last of the citys funds,but we can still apply for other funds. The board suggested that it will be difficult to receiveadditional funds this year due to the current budget constraints. We need to determine very soonwhether to go for additional funding. The Citys fiscal year ends June 30.

    Charlene inquired about whether our financials are on a fiscal calendar? Amanda responded thatwe are on a January-December calendar. Our current contributions under budget. We will beapplying for a Chevron grant ($40,000). The grant will be for small business development andbusiness incubation. They are pleased with our work. Mechanics Bank and Kaiser will also be

    contacted for contributions.

    Fundraising Update: Amanda applied for a Community Benefit Grant for HEAL for $25,000from Kaiser. Adonna stated that Kaiser is pleased with the work we are doing. Kathryn Boyleand Erica Brown asked us to submit a budget for our HEAL work through December. We areexpected to hear from them within a month. Amanda stated that the Chevron application ismore detailed, but we were able to gather data, statistics and information on the projects that weare proposing. Amanda stated that Chevron is focusing on economic development and stemeducation and working with organizations that cater to that focus. She is not aware of apublished list of companies they will or wont fund.

    Board Development: Amanda introduced Susan Bain. Susan Bain is from Employment &Human Services and interested in joining the board. She has been with the Richmond district forover a year and was previously the Social Work Supervisor. She is originally from Boston andwas recommended by Terrance Cheung from the County Supervisors office as a board member.A formal motion was imposed by Charlene and seconded by Cindy to vote Ms. Bain in as amember of the board. Susan Bain was accepted by unanimous vote as a member of the board.Cindy stated that Clarence White who is a downtown property owner will also be joining theboard in June. Amanda says we only need one other property owner in order to be in compliance

    with the District Management Plan for the PBID.

    Committee Updates:

    The board reviewed notes and the 2013 Strategic Workplan from the retreat to go over the tasksand team members.

    Several tasks need to be followed up on:

    Economic Restructuring Fundraising plan; Incubation project.o Charlene will create an agenda for the April 13 meeting.o Charlene will meet with Amanda and Johnasies about leveraging funding for the

    PBID and grants research in the next two weeks.

    o We determine whether to go to the City for funding at the next ERC meeting.Promotions /Design Committee

    o Cindy contacted Elizabeth regarding marketing and the TV commercial, shepassed the information and to contact Amanda.

    o Amanda distributed postcards for the Healthy Village taking place on the 1stFriday May-August from 12-2pm. It will be located on Harbour & Macdonald.This year we will have collaborated with other community organizations such asHappy Lot Farms, Urban Tilth and Easy-Go.

    o Farmers Market begins May 8th thru October 30th. We are advertising in the Postand will be included in their campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness. The ads

    will be on KDIA and KDYA. We have also added the EastBay Express to ouradvertising efforts to reach out surrounding communities in Berkeley andOakland.

    o We should also look at advertising in the BART station. We need to determine ifwe need to get permission?

    o The entertainment selections needs to take to be made for Music on the Main.JoEl has recommended a few artists to be considered. Geopele and Sheile E.,were recommended for the Spirit & Soul Festival. No contact has been maderegarding those artists. Billy says he might be able to help us with the contactingthose artists and getting a feasible rate. However, all his projects have beenpushed back due to the fact that his sister-in-law is filming in Atlanta.

    o We are hoping to expand our artist base beyond Jesse James to include otherdemographics in the community.o Rick and Russ DJs were also suggested for Spirit and Soul. Billy will do the

    follow-up.

    Clean and Safe Securing new cleaning and Maintenance Company.o Cindy said Safety 1st our new Cleaning and Maintenance company was a no-

    show for the Clean and Safe meeting on Wednesday, April 17; they did not havethe right date. There were representatives from BART and RPD present. There

    were lots of questions asked about the spike in violence at BART. BARTrepresentative Mark Shepard said that 3 officers are assigned to share theRichmond, El Cerrito, El Cerrito Del Norte stations, with the majority of the timespent at the Richmond Station. They are supposed to do 3 train rides each dayduring commute times.

    o Grandpas Salvage (Corner of 15th & McDonald) has been cited by RPD forbuilding inspection, and code enforcements. It is believed that they are acceptingstolen property.

    Other business:

    Amanda talked about a meeting at the Summer, Summer Thai Restaurant in Emeryville. Janet,Amanda and Cindy met with the owner who has a very successful business model. She hasopened 6 restaurants in the last 8 years. She might be interested in Richmond. She said that shewill need to visit the area. She is most interested in locating in a vacant shell so that she canbuild it out. She would be a great potential tenant for one of the BART spaces or Mr. NassersMarina Way location.

    Amanda sent out a flyer regarding the Walnut Creek MTC meeting on Monday, April 22nd. She

    will need 5 people to attend to fulfill the Outreach Grant/Contract to receive the ($2,000)remainder of the funding.

    Amanda attended the New Orleans Main Street conference with Janet Johnson. They had goodworkshops and sessions. Amanda and Janet attended a mobile tour of the Treme. They alsoattended a workshop on FoodTrucks and attracting food businesses downtown and an interestingbusiness incubation session. It could be a model that would work for a business like JoannesBoutique. Amanda will reach out to Joanne to broker the idea.
