fire rescue saves 90-year-oldNeighbours rescued a 90-year-old woman moments before � re engulfed her house in McLaughlin Street , Ardeer. A Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokeswoman said the elderly woman was unaware of a � re burning in a bathroom until neighbours knocked at her door just before 2pm on October 26. The house was engulfed in smoke within minutes. \

pair on burglary, injury countsA woman, 18, and a man, 23, both of Sunshine North, have been charged with offences including aggravated burglary and intentionally causing serious injury after a stabbing in Derrimut on October 28. Rose Vo and Tien Van Lee faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on October 29 . \

stabbing, fights at partyA 15-year-old boy was stabbed twice after “a number of � ghts” broke out at a party in Deer Park on October 26. Police said the boy was stabbed during one of the scuf� es. Another boy, 17, sustained head injuries. Police attended the event about 10.30pm and dispersed about 200 partygoers from a hall located on Station Road. Police are now searching for two men . The � rst man is described as Asian, with a mullet, and aged between 16 and 20. The second man is also described as Asian, cross-eyed and in his late teens. \

� e number of work days lost by Brimbank council sta� due to workplace injuries has more than tripled in the past seven years.

Sta� missed 1568 days last � nancial year, compared with 409 in 2005-06.

A council spokesman said the sharp increase was underpinned by nine serious claims in 2012-13. He said � ve of the claims involved major surgical

procedures. � e council was unable to disclose details.

to manage and return to work,” a council report found.

� e total number of WorkCover claims made by council sta� in the same period dropped from 62 to

30, while the number of ‘‘lost time’’ injuries was also down, from 41 to 18.

Council’s infrastructure and environment division accounted for 1017 days lost last

� nancial year. As of June this year, the council employed 1368 people, an increase of 71 sta� on the same time last year.

WorkSafe health and safety general manager Lisa Sturzenegger said 2724 Brimbank residents had � led compensation claims in the past � ve years, with 20 per cent coming from within the manufacturing industry.

bike recycling team helps break a cycleoffenders program

A new bike restoration program is aiming to steer young o� enders onto the right path.

As part of the 12-week Fix the Cycle, unwanted bikes of all sizes and colours donated at Melton, Keilor Downs and Caroline Springs police stations are being refurbished by young o� enders aged 18-25 under the guidance of bike mechanics .

� e bikes will be presented to disadvantaged Sunshine youth at Christmas.

Young o� ender ‘Shane’ said the workshops, which began late last month, had already taught him valuable skills.

“When I started attending the Fix the Cycle program, I wasn’t sure I would be able to do the work because I have never done anything like this before, but since day one I’ve actually enjoyed attending each week.

“� e guys who run the program are always there to help me and everyone is able to work together to get the work done,’’ he said.

‘‘I’m learning new skills every day. It feels really good to do something meaningful and help out others.”

Almost 50 bicycles have been collected so far. Caroline Springs police will accept more bikes on November 16 between 10am and 4pm. Program manager Stephen Cadman said the police and Department of Justice

initiative allowed youngsters on parole or court orders to perform community service and work towards future employment.

Fix the Cycle builds on the success of this year’s award-winning Green Wheels for

Justice project, a partnership between the Department of Justice and Brimbank council through which 100 bikes were refurbished and donated to refugees. \

A Deer Park man will contest charges of cultivating more than 250 kilograms of cannabis plants at a Sunshine North factory.

Quoc Danh Pham , 48, was last month bailed a� er being charged with cultivating 258 kilograms of narcotic plants, drug possession, electricity the� and being in possession of suspected proceeds of crime.

� e Supreme Court heard police raided the factory on September 2 .

� ey said four men, including Pham, attempted to � ee the scene.

Police seized 532 cannabis plants and sophisticated hydroponic equipment operating from an electrical bypass .

� e court heard Pham told police it was the � rst time he’d attended the factory and he was only there to help a friend deliver drinks . Pham had $1250 in his pocket. A committal mention is scheduled for Melbourne Magistrate s Court on November 26. \ BC

crash site revampedA history of crashes at the intersection of Sunshine and Odessa avenues in Keilor Downs will be addressed by a $145,000 state government revamp of the site .

Advanced warning signs will be installed and existing tra� c signals improved for both north and south-bound tra� c on Sunshine Avenue.

Five casualty crashes were recorded at the intersection in the � ve years to 2012, including three involving serious injuries.

“To improve visibility, a new tra� c light arm that hangs over and above the intersection will be installed and all tra� c lights will be upgraded to brighter LED,” Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury said

Health experts believe improved education in schools can be linked to increased reports of sex crimes against juveniles in Brimbank.

� e Weekly revealed last month that authorities are con� dent a new sexual o� ences and child abuse investigation team in Sunshine will help address a sharp rise in overall sex crimes committed in Brimbank and Melton.

Latest police statistics show there were 88 cases of sex crimes ( excluding rape) against juveniles last � nancial year – up from 68 in

2011-12. But Western Region Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA) executive o� cer Jane Vanderstoel said the increase in reporting

could partly be attributed to e� ective education messages that “sexual assault

is not OK”.Fourteen per cent of the 118

people treated by CASA last � nancial year were aged between 12 and 19.

“[It can be due to an] increased con� dence in a positive response from

reporting to police and being believed, and improved responses from schools in consulting with us,” Ms Vanderstoel said.

“Brimbank has the most diverse population

of our � ve local government areas with [people from] 23 di� erent countries of birth [being treated].”

More than half of the centre’s clients in 2012-13 were assaulted in the home of the victim or o� ender, while three-quarters were living in “family households”.

Nearly a quarter of all CASA’s clients last year were from Brimbank. Children under the age of 12 are seen by the Gatehouse Centre at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Brimbank police’s Acting Inspector Jenny Wilson said the new sex crimes unit would provide more accessible help for residents living in Sunshine and surrounding areas. \

budget cuts weaken the thin blue lineOf� cers are being pulled from front-line policing to do administrative work and ‘babysit’ prisoners, according to retired homicide squad detective Charlie Bezzina. The Sunshine resident, who worked on high-pro� le cases such as the deaths of gangster Alphonse Gangitano and cricketer David Hookes, will speak at next month’s Altona SES 30th anniversary dinner. CROWNING GLORYWestern suburbs-based band Blue King Brown haven’t let success go to their head, writes RoBeRt Fedele

The two key players behind urban roots outfit Blue King Brown found their feet on the streets of Byron Bay.

“It’s a beautiful place and a great community,’’ says lead vocalist Natalie

Pa’apa’a. “It’s still very much a part of our hometown. Although it’s ever-changing, we do like to get back there and reconnect.”

Blue King Brown, formed in 2004, has a dozen members. The group was formed by Pa’apa’a and Carlo Santone, who clicked after meeting in the laid-back beachside town.

“It was great,” she says. “Performing on the street is one of the toughest gigs around. It teaches you a lot about being an independent artist, which is what we are.

“You have to be able to get them to stop and watch you and then stick around and form a crowd. And then to give you money. To be able to pull that off is a skill ... we learnt how to really hone our performance skills from that pressure of raw performance on the streets of Byron.”

Santone has similar fond memories. “We’ve got a lot of friends up there; it was an important time in our lives as musicians,” he says.

As a musical partnership, Santone and Pa’apa’a cut their teeth as a percussion duo jamming on the streets. Off the stage they fell in love.

“Her ability to face the injustices in this world with a truth that is rare to come by ... I love that about her,” Santone says of his partner.

He says creative differences are what produce their sound. “There’s a connection in what we do and we come from a different space as well ... somewhere in the middle, it all comes together.”

Pa’apa’a says: “There’s no one strict rule. Every song is different and has its own process. Either myself or Carlo will have a musical idea and then we’ll show it to each other, maybe elaborate on it, maybe write a whole song. Then I’ll write the lyrics after that. Then maybe we’ll take it to the band and get it going in a live forum. Other times we’ll just start a jam in the rehearsal.”

Pa’apa’a is a huge energy source for the band. She’s known for her leadership in justice and human rights and translates those themes into her music.

The band released a single this year, Rize Up, which is based on the notion of coming together as a global community to change the world.

Pa’apa’a says she grew up with a soundtrack provided by her mum, listening to the likes of Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Ella Fitzgerald and Jimi Hendrix.

“People are born musicians, I guess,” she says. “It took me 13 years to pick up a guitar and the second I did, that was it. I was like, that’s what I’m gonna do.”

She attributes the powerful messages in her songs to growing up aware of injustices within the indigenous community and experiencing racism as an adolescent.

The innate activist in her was always asking, why?“That started at a young age and naturally happened

when I put pen to paper to write music. That’s what came out. It wasn’t necessarily planned.

“It wasn’t something we set out to do, to be a band with social justice issues in our songs. We just wanted to make really good music. We wanted to make kick-ass music that connected with people. Then when the words came out they also happened to be about people and our struggles and also our love for each other and the environment and

documenting what it’s like to be alive in history at this time in the world.”

Blue King Brown may have grown from humble beginnings, but they quickly created a buzz in the music

industry with their unique sound.The band recently returned home after an international tour that included the Montreal

Jazz Festival and the famed Glastonbury.“It’s madness,” Pa’apa’a says of Glastonbury. “It’s literally the biggest

festival in the world. When we saw it we were like, ‘Oh my God!’. You come

driving over the hill and you see it from a distance. It looks like a city.

An actual whole suburb. And it’s all tents and stages.”

Blue King Brown’s next step is releasing their long-awaited new album in early 2014. “It will probably be a good solid two years by the time it’s dropped,” Santone says.

“It’s not as if you’re sitting there working on it every day for two years, but you do put a lot of time into it.”

Is critical acclaim important? “Most of the pressure comes internally from ourselves,’’ Santone says. “Our need and our desire to produce the best-quality music that we can. There are pressures from the outside, but the internal

ones are the biggest battle. There’s a lot of hard work being

in a band. It’s full-time, seven days a week, 24/7. You wake up

thinking about it. You go to bed thinking about it.”Pa’apa’a says she, too, is excited

about the impending release.“There’s a lot of great songs on

there. There’s a lot more reggae feel in this album, which we feel Australia lacks

compared with the international community. It’s still an underground genre [in Australia], but

I believe that’s slowly changing.”Pa’apa’a promises to continue standing up for

those in need. “Music is my life and my weapon. These two things are what I’m planning on continuing. I guess they’re actually one. For us it’s about that live performance experience, sharing energy with other human beings and sharing ideas about the issues that are important to all of us.”

Santone says his goal is to take the band’s music all over the world and spread the message. Its current success doesn’t seem to faze him. “It feels good. We’re doing what we love; that’s the bottom line here.”

Pa’apa’a feels much the same.“We never forget where we come from ... It’s not

necessarily an easy life, touring. We’re not like super dooper famous and make shit loads of money, but we love the opportunity to play music live and if that was the case I’d take that any day over money.” \

Keilor Park writer and publisher Dale Maccanti is out to show there’s more to tatts than just anchors and sleeves. Maccanti

can’t recall when he stumbled across the idea of producing an oversized, tattoo-themed graphic anthology, but Ink Tales is almost ready for publication.

Featuring everything from tattooed femme fatales to high-tech tattoo viruses, Maccanti says Ink Tales will change the way people perceive one of the oldest art forms.

“I started searching for writers and artists to be involved with Ink Tales about a year and a half ago,’’ he says. ‘‘My aim was to get a broad range of Australian talent and really create a book that could stand up against the American comics juggernauts.

“The Melbourne comics scene is filled with great writers and artists, but I didn’t want to exclude Australian talents that I didn’t know personally. Thank God for social media.”

Maccanti says his love of publishing stems from reading comics as a kid.

“I loved cutting out the weekly Phantom newspaper strips, and in high school I read a lot of Spider-Man,” he says.

“With the help of local Melbourne comics shops like All Star Comics and Classic Comics, I was exposed to the local indie comics scene.

‘‘I knew I had to get involved because there is so much crazy talent in Melbourne.’’

Curiously, Maccanti is far from heavily inked himself.

“I’ve got only three tattoos – a Spider-Man, Felix the Cat and a Futurama tattoo – and they’re all hidden,” he says. “I just love tattoos. It’s an artform I’ve always had a great appreciation for.

‘‘I love finding out why someone got a tattoo, or what a particular tattoo means to them. I just find it a fascinating way to express yourself.”

Maccanti is collecting funds for the project through crowd-funding website Indiegogo until November 16. \

Beer lovers in Melbourne have never had it better. Outstanding beers are shipped from all corners of the world and the local beer scene is in mighty

health, with breweries in suburbs from Thornbury to Richmond and Heidelberg to Moorabbin.

Despite the choice, I’ve gone back to the beers I used to drink when I was at university. It’s no mid-life crisis or hunt for nostalgia, but a change in drinking habit.

Twenty years ago there wasn’t much of a range on bottleshop shelves – James Boag’s Premium was about as exotic as beer got. Craft beer was a dodgy home brew bought in kit form at the supermarket, and imported beers came from interstate rather than overseas. If you wanted something foreign it was usually the German or Belgian equivalent of VB – mass-produced Becks or Stella Artois.

Since then, there has been an explosion of imported beers and, more interestingly, a rise in artisan Australian-made craft brews.

The wide range of flavours that brewers can get from three ingredients – hops, malt and yeast – keeps me in constant amazement.

The only thing for me is that some of these beers have more flavours and intensity – and for some, almost as much alcohol content – than the wines I’ve tasted all afternoon. These days I want beer that’s neutral and refreshing; something that will cleanse my wine-fatigued palate rather than tire it even further.

I’ve learnt that many of the beers I was drinking as a first-year engineering student – beer appreciation was the course’s unofficial subject and the one I most excelled in – have changed.

Recipes are tweaked from time to time – VB controversially changed its recipe and lowered its alcohol content before reverting to the original as drinkers voted with their tastebuds. In cases where

the recipe hasn’t changed, the source of the ingredients might: Cascade Premium Lager now sources all its ingredients from Tasmania

rather than Germany.Breweries change, too, and that can affect the

flavour of beer. A local brewer in charge of producing Peroni under licence a couple of years ago told me that the size and configuration of his brewery at the time meant the beers were unlikely to ever match each other equally. It took Coopers a year of trials before Japanese beer giant Sapporo signed off on its locally brewed offering. One element of nostalgia has crept into my beer-drinking habits. When possible, Melbourne Bitter must be poured from longnecks, just as it was in pioneering laneway bars such as Meyers Place and Sahara in the 1990s. \

Sunshine remains winless in division one of Baseball Victoria’s Summer League a� er an 8-5 loss to Doncaster on Saturday.

Playing away, Sunshine was no match for the home side early, with the Dragons taking an unassailable 8-1 lead in the sixth inning.

Sunshine fought back to score the last four runs of the match, which went to nine innings, but couldn’t reel in hard-hitting Doncaster.

New Sunshine coach Earl Byrne said the season was a “work in progress”.

“Doncaster hit the ball really well and we just couldn’t get the job done,” he said. “� ey made all the right plays and once they got out to that 8-1 lead we just couldn’t catch them. We eked out another four runs, but it was pretty disappointing. But the boys didn’t give up and kept saying, ‘We can get back in this, we can do it’.”

Byrne pointed out that the Eagles had been competitive in four of their � ve games so far, losing 9-4 to Preston, 5-4 against Geelong and 5-0 against Newport.

A 23-6 hammering by unbeaten Essendon has been the exception.

“We’ve been a bit unlucky at times,”

Byrne said. “But apart from the Essendon game we’ve been in them. It’s a work in progress and we’ll keep plugging away.”

Also in the NWMCA George Luscombe Shield, Sydenham/Hillside had a heartbreaking three-run loss against Gladstone Park. Sydenham bowled Gladstone Park out for 146 in 39 overs but fell agonisingly short of the total in the chase, bowled out for 143 from 37.4 overs. Rohan Keats (3-6) and John Kulikowski (3-15) did much of the damage for Gladstone Park. \

Sunshine coach Mark Brown can feel a win just around the corner a� er a much-improved showing against Altona in the on Saturday.

� e Crows are still without points but fell only 21 runs short of Altona’s target at Frank Kirk Oval and avoided the collapses which haunted them in their opening two games.

A� er Sunshine skipper Kane Twentyman won the toss and sent Altona in, Troy Stone struck early with the ball when he bowled opener Tim Collins for four.

Aaron Maynard joined Peter Herrick and the pair put on 115 for the second wicket before Herrick was run out for 55.

Maynard carried his bat through the innings for 82, with Josh Young’s 39 the other score of note in Altona’s 5-255. Paramjeet

Hundal, Laka Khan, Stone and Kapelan Kulendranathan took wickets for Sunshine.

In reply, Sunshine lost Nathan Bolus (0), Brown (15) and Stone (6) to be reeling at 3-35 and Nathan Armstrong was caught and bowled for 19, leaving the Crows 4-76.

But a disciplined 60-run partnership between Fayaz Ughradar (62) and David Bonavia (42 not out) rebuilt the innings.

Khan backed up his � rst-round half-century with 38 but the Crows ran out of time to press for a maiden victory.

“It was disappointing to lose but we’re taking positives out of it,” Brown said. “� e intensity we showed against good-quality opposition was good.

“� ere’s something there and now we just need to get a victory. \

Keilor dropped to eighth in Bowls Victoria’s division 2 section 2 of Saturday Pennant a� er an 85-65 loss to Glenroy on Saturday.

� e pair traded places on the ladder a� er Glenroy grabbed an early lead and maintained it throughout the a� ernoon.

Colin Richmond was the only Keilor skipper to win, 21-20, while Joe Watkins (23-17), Harry Kujala (28-11) and Terry O’Brien (18-16) were all beaten.

Michael Isergin, playing in Richmond’s rink, said Keilor’s 1-4 start to the season could still be turned around.

“Glenroy took the lead early and led by

about 20 shots all day,” he said. “We’re a bit disappointed, we thought we’d have a better start than this, but it’s only early in the season so we’ll keep plugging away and � ght and, hopefully, move up a few spots.”

Deer Park is unbeaten in division 1 section 1 a� er a 104-68 win over MCC.

Division 2 section 1 saw Sunshine City jump two places on the ladder with a 75-67 win over Williamstown.

Sunshine RSL got its � rst win of the Division 3 Section 1 season, beating Laverton 99-69. But Sunshine VRI lost 82-62 to Footscray Park.

In Division 4 Section 1, St Albans lost 82-72 against Hoppers Crossing. \

Sunshine YCW is well-placed a� er day one of its Victorian Turf Cricket Association west B1 clash with Wyndham Vale.

� e Cougars rolled Wyndham Vale for 196 from 72.4 overs and are 1-36 from seven overs in reply.

Wyndham Vale skipper Andrew Ford and fellow opening Jay Dolliver pushed the score to 23 before Dolliver was lbw for 13.

Ford followed soon a� er, and when young Adam Moscatiello was caught for a duck, the Vales were struggling at 3-23.

Lee Veal (27), Wyndham Vale Falcons coach Luke Dennerley (23) and Andrew Mundey (20) went about their work trying to restore the innings, and although all got starts the Cougars soon reduced the Vales to 6-98.

Ben Funnell was caught for nine soon a� er and the Vales, riding high a� er a comfortable win over Beaumaris a week earlier, were in trouble at 7-117.

But Jonathan Ford and young wicketkeeper Joel Roze produced a terri� c 68-run partnership for the eighth wicket before Roze fell lbw, one short of a deserving half-century. Ford was not out 35 as Adam Walls and Jake Styles both fell for ducks.

In the senior division, Keilor will need divine intervention if it is to take the points against South Caul� eld, which posted a mammoth 4-409.

� e gargantuan total was built on opener � ilina Masmulla’s epic 254 not out, which came from just 204 balls, 180 of which came in boundaries. Masmulla has made 382 runs in four digs so far this season at the remarkable average of 127.3.

Masmulla was supported by fellow opener Daniel Davies, who played the steadier hand and hit 61 from 132 deliveries in a 222-run opening stand. Adam Carlson also added 47. Keilor reached 0-19 from seven overs in reply.

In north division, Keilor Park posted 206 against Doutta Stars.

North A1 saw Taylors Lakes post an intimidating 5-388 against St Andrews, with centuries to Glen Jones (142) and Michael Brne (124).

Sunshine Druids hit 319 against Craigieburn, led by Leigh Wilson’s 101 and three half-centuries, while St Albans was bowled out for 116 against Youlden Parkville, which is 3-48 in reply.
