Our Mission
Through our congregational life, our goal is to provide the opportunity for our members and friends to experience Jewish life to its fullest. We want to transmit the ideals of Conservative Judaism to our children and grandchildren, to enable them to be knowledgeable and respon-sible participants in Jewish life, sensitive and ethical human beings and reliable custodians of an enduring heritage. Through the synagogue, we want to find strength and inspiration in worship and study, in the sharing of lifecycle events, in acts of caring, in reaching out to the wide Jewish and non-Jewish communities, and in concern and support for Israel.

Bikkur Holim One of the most important mitzvot in Judaism is bikkur holim –visiting
the sick. It is the responsibility that the clergy of B’nai Israel take very
seriously. When our members are ill or hospitalized, we want to know.
In the interest of protecting confidentiality, hospitals today are
extremely cautious about sharing patient names, even with clergy. We
need our congregants to communicate directly with us and to inform
us of illness or hospitalization. Please call Pam Askin at 727.381.4900
x203, so that as clergy and the synagogue family we can be helpful in
moments of difficult or stress.

It’s summertime – the season when children are out of school for three months, and when many people go away on vacation. We tend to think of summer as a time for enjoyment and relaxation. I find it interesting that the saddest day on the Jewish calendar – Tish’a b’Av – falls during this season that we tend to think of as hap-py.
Tish’a b’Av is a day of mourning. According to tradition, both the First and Second Temples were destroyed on Tish’a b’Av, and traditionally, the destruction of the Temples is the primary thing that we mourn on Tish’a b’Av. Over time, this day came to be a time when we mourn all Jewish suffering, including the Bar Kochba rebellion, the expulsion from Spain, and the Holocaust.
The liturgical highlight of Tish’a b’Av is the reading of Megillat Eicha, the Book of Lamentations. In Eicha, the prophet Jeremiah describes and laments the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple. A recurring theme is the suffering of Jerusalem and its people, and the book moves between seeing God’s role in the destruction as passive and as active. The book raises many more questions than it offers answers, and perhaps that is the point of the book – to raise the questions, and to inspire us to ponder those questions.
Eicha contains five chapters. Chapters one, two and four all begin with the word “Eicha,” usually translated as “alas,” and are alphabetic acrostics: the first verse begins with aleph, the second verse begins with bet, and so on. But in chapters two and four, the order of ‘ayin and peh are reversed. Chapter three is a triple acrostic: three aleph verses, then three bet verses, and so on. Chapter three is also traditionally chanted to a special melody distinct from the trope of the other four chapters. And the most famous verse from the book, the final verse, is one that we know from the end of the Torah Service: Hashivenu Adonai eilecha v’nashuva, hadesh yameinu k’kedem. “Help us turn to you, Adonai, and we shall return. Renew our lives as in days of old.”
B’shalom,
In a few weeks we will welcome the month of Elul – the sixth month of the Jewish year. If you were to look in the Torah for a reference to Elul, you would not find it. There are no holidays in Elul. But in post-Biblical times, in the calendar of rabbinic Judaism, the whole month of Elul becomes a period of great significance, an entire month devoted to preparation for the great days of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, the Days of Awe. How is it possible to enter that time of judgment and repentance with no preparation? You cannot simply take the plunge. You have to spend time getting ready.
Over the course of the centuries various practices have been developed to help us with that task, actions that make Elul a very special month. The shofar is sounded each morning, reminding us of the need to search our deeds but also signifying that God is a forgiving God who desires life and not death, as the story of the Binding of Isaac teaches. Special prayers of forgiveness, Selihot, are recited late at night in which God's attributes of mercy are repeated. A special psalm is chanted morning and evening, Psalm 27, "The Lord is my light and my help, whom should I fear?" The psalm is particularly appropriate because it reveals the anxiety that we all feel regarding the future and our uncertainty in standing before God, yet ends with a positive note, a feeling of hope, of assurance that the individual "will enjoy the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living" and urges us to "Be strong and of good courage! Hope in the Lord!"
Significantly, the word Elul itself has been interpreted as representing the first letters of the Hebrew verse in the Song of Songs, Ani ledodi vedodi li – "I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.” This book was interpreted by Rabbi Akiva as referring to the relationship between God and the people Israel. The 'beloved' is God, while the woman is Israel. According to Akiva, the true relationship of God and Israel is a relationship of love, not fear, best likened to the relationship between man and wife.
This interpretation is especially significant during Elul. The thought of the days of judgment could indeed generate a feeling of fear, almost of panic. The use of the verse from Song of Songs as the meaning of the month of Elul serves to remind us that love is the primary relationship with the Divine. It should not be forgotten that the command in Deuteronomy is "Love the Lord your God with all you heart, with all your soul and with all your might" and that the prayers that precede the recitation of that verse state that God loves us greatly as well. The relationship is of mutual love.
Soon we will welcome Elul, the month of preparation, the month of self-awareness, the month of forgiveness, the month of establishing a relationship of love between ourselves and God.
Shalom,

Notes from 3080 Broadway………………..
I attended the 24th annual NAASE Week of Study at the Jewish Theological Seminary in June. The theme was “It Is A Tree of Life to Those Who Hold It Fast: The Evolution of Judaism and Jewish Text.” What an amazing experience! Our keynote teacher was Dr. Ben Sommer, Professor of Bible, who led four sessions on “The Two Torahs, and What They Tell Us About How the Rabbis Remade Judaism.” We focused on texts, comparing and contrasting passages from the Written Torah and Oral Torah by various authors from different periods with Ben and with other JTS stars, including Rabbi David Hoffman, Dr. David Kramer, and Dr. Alan Cooper. Rabbi Bill Lebeau (who helped establish this program) came in to teach a session, and we heard from Rabbi Steve Wernick (USCJ CEO) and Professor Arnie Eisen (JTS Chancellor). Some of us took a quick trip up to the Rare Book Room to take a look at a 17th century Chinese Torah! A few takeaways in which you might be interested:
We spent a lot of time talking about the fact that machlochet – disagreements “for the sake of Heaven” are at the heart of the Jewish tradition. We shouldn’t shy away from disagreement, but we should remember to disagree respectfully. Per Ben Sommer, God loved machlochet, so He gave us the Torah (the whole thing, not just the Bible) to encourage it!
Dr. Michal Raucher reminded us that 5775 will be a shmita year (the period every seven years when the land of Israel allows i ts soil to regain its nutrients) and suggested that we give some thought to finding a way to focus on that in our programming. One suggestion was that we consider having an energy audit and implement it. (Since we recently had a Duke Energy audit, this idea might just be a good one for us.)
David Hoffman talked about mussar (a Jewish ethical, educational, and cultural movement developed in 19th Century Europe) which he described as putting a flashlight on one’s decision-making process. Every decision we make is influenced by biases created by our own life’s dramas and experiences. He proposed that we take some time to “recalibrate.”
Bill Lebeau put a new spin on the Adam and Eve story and suggested that tradition might need to be viewed in a new light, too. Maybe Eve did just what God wanted her to do, and the expulsion was not because she ate “the apple,” but that she and Adam did NOT choose to eat from the Tree of Life (a/k/a Torah)!
There’s lots more, but I’ve used all the space allotted me in this issue – so thoughts from Steve Wernick and Arnie Eisen will have to wait!
B’Shalom,
My first column as President of CBI! I am honored to be elected to this position and will try my very best to live
up to the fabulous past presidents who have preceded me.
The Trustees and I will work hard to continue to keep CBI an important part of your lives in many ways. My
personal goals for this coming year include membership, youth, and strategic planning. You will be hearing
more about all of these initiatives as the year progresses.
CBI has been accepted to the USCJ Sulam for Strategic Planning where 10 synagogues within USCJ have been included for
participation. Rabbi Luski and I attended the first meeting in NYC in the spring. Liz Sembler and I will be co-chairs as we work to
investigate and plan for our future. Each of you will be given an opportunity to participate and have your voice heard so please
stay tuned for that.
As we embark on this journey together, I will share a phrase from Rabbi Alfred E. Landsberg, from my earlier days in
New Jersey. “Today I shall try to be kind.” I have lived by this and ask that you think of this daily as well.
I will be available to you through cell phone, home phone, and email, but not on Shabbat or Yom Tovim. I look forward to working
together and greeting you each time we meet.
B’shalom,

Women’s League August 2014
How is it possible that another year is upon us?
To me, the start of a new year almost feels like the start of an old, familiar race. Not a race to see how fast I can get from one
place to another, but more like a hamster wheel, only with obligations and distractions. Much like passing recognizable landmarks
along the road, we also have time and date landmarks we unknowingly use to navigate our year.
I think time slips away from us so quickly because we often go about our daily routine, or even our YEARLY routine with about as
much excitement as watching paint dry. Maybe if we approach our calendar happenings with a little more gusto, we may not only
get more out of the experience, but we may also find a way to jump off that hamster wheel and find a fresher perspective that
we’ve missed all this time.
Join us for our Paid Up Membership Dinner on Wednesday, September 17, when we will be having a ball with ballroom line
dancing! Not in the mood to kick up your heels? That’s okay! Just come be with your friends because we miss you when you’re
not there! And if you’ve never been... what better time than now?
We have a great year of fun and inspirational programming ahead for you, so make a promise to yourself to jump off your
humdrum hamster wheel and dive into the fun Women’s League has to offer. After all, our lives are meant to be lived, richly and
fully. Don’t settle for mundane.

Pauline Rivkind Preschool Pauline Rivkind Preschool at Congregation B’nai Israel is a progressive preschool that embraces families from all backgrounds and cultivates a connection to Jewish values and traditions.
Pauline Rivkind Preschool in the Shirley Buns Early Childhood Center has the unique opportunity to provide the foundation for Jewish learning for all its children and families. We know that quality Jewish learning leads to the building of strong Jewish identities. From the time children enter the preschool, the families begin a fascinating journey that follows the Jewish calendar. Our children learn to be proud of their Jewish heritage through many wonderful learning experiences. They anticipate each holiday with wonder as it approaches. Our entire preschool envi-ronment is alive with a multi sensory approach to appeal to every child’s way of learning. Our classrooms and hallways are infused with sights and sounds of Judaism.
When school begins each year, we get ready to celebrate Rosh Hashana, the birthday of the world. When the school year ends, we celebrate Shavuot, when Moses receives the Ten Commandments at Sinai. Throughout the year we offer little lessons that we hope will inspire families to delve deeper into their Jewish life by adding new rituals and knowledge to their base.
Guided by our understanding of how young children learn best, our program offers them the opportunity to develop the building blocks for future success – positive self image, social skills, language communica-tion, and independence. Even at a very young age, children have an infinite potential to absorb knowledge. Our day is filled with opportunities to learn new skills, concepts and ideas, building on children’s natural curiosity and thirst for learning. Through a dynamic and developmentally-appropriate curriculum, we create an atmosphere that invites children to observe, to try new things, to actively participate, and to make choices. Art experiences, baking projects, imaginative play, and field trips foster a culture of wonder and discovery that is shared with friends.
Start the year off right! Register your child in one of our classes. We have classes for children ages one year old through five years old, participating in the Voluntary Pre Kindergarten program with the state of Florida. Spread the word. If you do not have a child this age, tell your children and grandchildren!
Contact the Preschool Office for more information. 727.381.4900 x211

A Message from Bonnie P. Halprin
Shalom. This will be the final note that I will be posting in our monthly bulletin as di-
rector of Pauline Rivkind Preschool
Last month I accepted an offer to teach Kindergarten for Pinellas County Schools.
This is a move that I am extremely excited about.
Pauline Rivkind Preschool has been a huge part of my life for the past 18 years. It is
difficult to make this change, but it is the right time for me to make a change. My fam-
ily has been so involved with the synagogue, it will be strange not to be here every
day. David took such pride in Congregation B’nai Israel. He volunteered more hours
than can be counted to insure the success of the synagogue. My children grew up
here, spending countless hours with me while I worked. They consider CBI a second
home.
It has truly been a joy working the young children at Pauline Rivkind Preschool. I will
miss their hugs and smiles.
Thank you to those of you who have always supported the preschool. I wish nothing
but good things in the future for Pauline Rivkind Preschool, and I look forward to see-
ing you all in shul.
Bonnie Peskin Halprin
Transition in Pauline Rivkind Preschool
Message from Katie Schaefer,
The Congregation B'nai Israel Pauline Rivkind Preschool Interim Director
Originally from Rockville Centre, Long Island, New York, I moved to Florida as I was
transitioning into grade school. I graduated Eckerd College with High Honors in
Environmental Studies and Human Development in May 2013. Since then, I have
received several credentials and certifications in Early Childhood Education and have
recently begun my Master of Education program.
As an educator, I believe it is imperative to build a safe, fun, educational, tactile, and creative environment for our children in
order for them to grow. By engaging students in age-appropriate activities and encouraging them in both individual and
cooperative settings, we can promote the fundamental skills they need to build upon for a successful future.
Every child is a precious gift, and here at Pauline Rivkind, our team works closely with our children's families to deliver a quality,
first educational experience while continuing our tradition of providing a Jewish Education. I am deeply humbled by the opportuni-
ty to be the Interim Director of Pauline Rivkind Preschool and will strive to uphold the values and integrity of our school. I am im-
plementing an "Open Door Policy" and will gladly answer any questions in this time of transition.
Pauline Rivkind Preschool August 2014
Message from Katie Schaefer
*Join us Saturday, August 16, at 9:00 am as CBI honors Bonnie’s 18 years of dedication to CBI as Pauline Rivkind Preschool Director during our
Shabbat Morning Services.

CBI Engagement Committee August 2014
A-Team: CBI’s Advocacy for Israel Committee
A few months ago, CBI completed its second JNF Parkland in Eretz Yisrael. We look forward to a formal completion ceremony commemorating our achievement on Tu B’Shevat 5775 (Wednesday, 4 February 2015).
Opportunities continue – I’m pleased to announce that we have begun a new project. It is a Woodland of 2,000 trees. Our goal is to raise $10,000 over the next few years. The donation form can be downloaded from CBI’s Home web page; a hardcopy version is available in the lobby. If you call in your contribution (800-542-8733), please inform the JNF operator of the project number: RN140633.
In addition to supporting the greening of Israel, as a Partner with JNF, CBI receives a 20% monetary benefit from every gift to JNF – used only for our Israel advocacy programming. Over a period of three years, CBI has earned $5,000! This money is available to:
a) Provide stipends for our eligible youth (high school and college) to supplement expenses for programs in Israel: March of the Living; summer events in Israel, eg, various USY, Young Judaea programs; semester at Alexander Muss High School in Israel; college programs in Israel, eg, Nativ, MASA, Young Judaea Year Course; etc.
b) Provide assistance for our youth, especially USYers, to attend AIPAC, StandWithUs, and other events: Policy Conference; Leadership Seminars; High School Summit; etc.
c) Contribute to costs of bringing top-notch programs and speakers to CBI-hosted Israel advocacy events, eg, Scholar-in-Residence weekend.
Note: This money is not intended to replace existing sources for youth scholarships (but may supplement existing funds); the money is for new Israel-centric initiatives. Requests for youth assistance will follow the same process as applying for camp and other scholarships.
Please encourage your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and others to participate in this opportunity.
Byron Kolitz
This summer the CBI Engagement Committee launched two initiatives in our synagogue: congregational name tags and a trans-
literated version of selected prayers found in the Shabbat Sim Shalom Siddur.
You’ll see the name tags when you come into the lobby. Please wear yours at services and at the Oneg or Kiddush. And if you
have a preferred name that we did not use on your name tag, let us know and we will make the change. We have a special
name tag for guests that says, “I’m visiting. Please ask my name.” This enables us to more easily recognize our guests and
welcome them to our community and our synagogue. Please help us with this outreach effort and introduce yourself to guests
when you see them in our shul, and yes, please ask them their names. When you leave the synagogue, you can place your
name tag in the designated basket by the front door.
If you are not a Hebrew reader and like to follow the prayers using a transliteration, please pick up a blue folder from the name
tag table in the front lobby. The folder contains the Conservative Movement’s prepared transliteration of many of the Shabbat
and Festival prayers. This is a prototype of the 5x8 booklet we will print and place in the back of our sanctuary seats this fall.
Also in the folder you will find a feedback form. Please fill out the form after Shabbat and bring it to the synagogue office. We
will use your feedback as we prepare the printed version.
The Engagement Committee would love your input. Please contact me if you would like to join the committee or share ideas,
and help us as we work together to further our mission of fostering warmth and connections at CBI though initiatives that bring
us closer to God, our fellow synagogue members, and the Jewish community.
See you in shul,
Liz Sembler
Engagement Director

Tisha B’Av & The 3 Weeks August 2014
What are the Three Weeks? According to the Mishnah, Taanit 3:16, a number of disasters occurred to our ancestors on
both the 17th of Tammuz and the 9th of Av. Two of the disasters, which occurred, concern the destruction of the Second
Temple. On the 9th of Av both the First and Second Temples were destroyed. The next Mishnah, Taanit 3:7, states that
during the week in which Tisha B’Av, the 9th of Av falls, it is forbidden to both cut one’s hair and to do laundry. From the
second Mishnah we see that a number of customs associated with mourning were observed in order to remind us of the
gravity of the destruction, which befell Israel.
While the Mishnah states the mourning customs are observed only the week in which Tisha B’Av falls, the Talmud brings a
number of Tannaitic opinions which hold that the mourning customs are observed from Hodesh Av, from the first day of
month of Av (Taanit 29b). It wasn’t until centuries later that the custom developed to observe some of the mourning cus-
toms from the 17th of Tammuz. Rabbi Moses Isseries in his glosses on the Shulhan Arukh says, “The custom is to be
strict about the prohibitions of doing laundry from Rosh Hodesh, but regarding cutting one’s hair, the custom is to be strict
from the 7th of Tammuz” (Orakh Hayyim 551:4). In addition to the prohibitions mentioned in the Mishnah, it has been cus-
tomary not to perform marriages from the 17th of Tammuz until after Tisha B’Av and some people also minimize the eating
of meat and drinking of wine.
