Want to know what is the best-kept secret in downtown Brenham, Texas? The Downtown Art Gallery! In 2008, owners Sara S. Parker and Patsy Supak opened the doors to provide a space for local artists to display and sell their finest art pieces. Stop in to view the various art mediums on display in this wonderful gallery. Find watercolors, oils, acrylics, and photographs. The Downtown Art Gallery works as a co-op, displaying work from about 50 artists, ranging from beginner to nationally known. Some popular pieces are Texas landscapes, florals, and of course, Texas Bluebonnets. The paintings are changed out quarterly, so make sure to visit often to see the new works of art.

The Downtown Art Gallery is visited by art-lovers from around the world for the chance to purchase bluebonnet art for their homes. Art pieces range from small tabletop displays to large wall portraits that could be used as a showcase piece in a large room in your home. Wall art is not the only art on display; peruse the great selection of jewelry and wood turning specialties.

Have you always wanted to try your hand at painting or drawing? Classes are provided through the Brenham Fine Arts League for adult and children’s classes. Co-owners, Sara S. Parker and Patsy Supak are also class instructors.

Sara struggled with drawing as a child and was determined to learn as much as possible about it. In 1999, Sara took a five-day intensive drawing workshop called Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, at Louisiana State University, where she became certified to teach the course. “Now I’m glad that I struggled, because it helps me understand how the kids are thinking,” says Sara.

Patsy has always had a love for painting and drawing. She joined the Brenham Fine Arts League twenty years ago so that she could take classes to study with many well-known local artists. Some of her favorite mediums are oils, acrylics, and watercolors. She now enjoys teaching the adult classes to help others like herself.

The Downtown Art Gallery really has something for everyone. Do yourself a favor and stop by to view the beautiful art on display and take a piece of it home with you!

Since 1876, Hermann Furniture Company has been a historic fixture in downtown Brenham. The store is currently owned by fourth and fifth generation family members, John Hermann and his daughter Jennifer Hermann, operating as the oldest family-owned furniture store in Texas. Jennifer grew up helping her dad at the store, whether it was dusting merchandise or helping the guys in the back assemble furniture. Always having a love for art and design and the family business, it was only natural for her to return to the store, putting her drawing talents and creative eye to use as she sketches fun, elaborate floor plans, arranges inspirational vignettes, and visits market each year for fresh new finds. When not helping manage the store, Jennifer can be found playing a round golf or doing anything creative, especially at her home, where she enjoys decorating and being with her three dogs and two turtles.

Jennifer Hermann and John Hermann invite you to experience Hermann Furniture, where there’s always something for everyone. Stop by and browse at their five shops, consisting of a Floral and Design Center, Antique Mall, Craft Mall and The General Store. The General Store is now carrying full lines of baby clothing by Mud Pie, Stephan Baby, and Good Lad. Hermann Furniture not only provides a vast assortment of home furnishings and unique accessories, but they also provide design consultations and workshops. This year marks the 136th anniversary for Hermann Furniture, so be sure to help the Hermann family celebrate at their grand open house and sale in November. More upcoming events and sales can be found on their website. If you haven’t experienced these extraordinary shops, what are you waiting for? There’s always something new at the oldest furniture store in Texas!

Brenham’s favorite meeting place, Mobius Coffeehouse, has become the community hub inspired by the creative vision of its two leading ladies and mother-daughter team, Patty Dalrymple and Sarah Bevers. Before opening the shop in 2009, Patty and Sarah previously worked together running a coffeehouse in East Texas, preparing them for their current adventure as co-owners of Mobius. A strong believer in her Christian faith, Patty sensed the leading of the Holy Spirit to create a welcoming environment where people of all backgrounds could come together and connect. After parting ways as Patty accepted a teaching position in Brenham and Sarah pursued her passions in Austin, that dream became a reality as the two eventually reunited to offer not only a delicious and original hand-crafted menu but also a creative outlet where the community and future generations are poured into through the promotion of local artists, foods, and businesses and the training of practical life skills.

The Mobius team is currently made up of girls and women of all ages, with the exception of their lone yet favorite main pizza man. Each team member is trained in almost every area of cooking, cleaning, customer service, barista skills, and more, furthering the vision of equipping staff in life skills. Patty’s love for training and youth come from her former background as a math teacher, which she still puts to use through tutoring students when she is not helping run the shop. Having developed relationships built on mutual respect, many of Patty’s former students have even played key parts in making Mobius what it is today, whether through working as a barista, covering all the technical and Wi-Fi details for the shop, painting the fun, whimsical backdrop for the live performance stage, or sculpting the gigantic red coffee cup that prominently graces the roof of Mobius’ exterior. One of Patty’s former school co-workers, Mary Ann Chelf, has also joined the vision, serving as “the heart of the kitchen” as she pours her love and passion into cooking Mobius’ original tasty creations.

Mobius’ relaxed eclectic atmosphere continues to be a place where relationships are formed, ideas and creativity are exchanged, or a cup of coffee is simply enjoyed. The Mobius women, and man, work hard to bring only the best, original new tastes to the ever-evolving menu and overall experience. Serving breakfast, lunch and, dinner, stop by today to kick up your feet and enjoy one of their hand-crafted des-serts, a flavorful coffee, an authentic New York or Chicago-style pizzas, or the refreshing chill of their natural fruit smoothies.

The Barnhill House Toys and Books in Brenham has been offering a children’s dreamland for the past twelve years, providing a sweet, happy environment overflowing with classic, hard-to-find toys and beloved storybooks. It’s 8:30am in the office and Lindi Braddock is already on her second cup of coffee, printing a contract and reviewing the day’s schedule with her daughter Camaron Surovik. Coldwell Banker Properties Unlimited represents three generations — Lindi’s own mother, Yvonne Hastings, helped found the real estate firm with Lindi in 1988 and worked side by side with her for over twenty years. Now Lindi’s daughter, Camaron, is also a broker and works alongside Lindi to serve clients in Washington and surrounding coun-ties, continuing the real estate legacy. “Lindi has just about bought, sold, or helped someone else buy or sell every house in Brenham,” jokes Camaron. Lindi, voted The Brenham Banner Press’s “Best Realtor in Brenham” for the past two years and Brenham Board of Realtors’ “Realtor of the Year” in 1993 and 2007, is dedicated to service and professionalism. Having served as vice president of the South Central Board of Realtors and President of Brenham Rotary Club, Braddock has been involved in major developments and community events for decades. As a team, Lindi and Camaron are almost always available for their clients because they live and breathe real estate. “I had always dreamed of living in the country and after driving out Highway 290 across the Brazos River and seeing these lush, rolling hills, I knew I was in Heaven,” says Lindi, about why she is so passionate about helping people make Brenham their home. Camaron, having grown up in Brenham, enjoys “helping people transition to the community that I have loved all my life.” Lindi’s thirty-plus years of experience in the business and Camaron’s extensive knowledge of Brenham make them the most successful pair in Washington County real estate. Having attended dozens of seminars and training conferences, the duo is also proud to offer cutting edge marketing plans to bring their services to the highest level. “We are ready to serve your real estate needs and to create raving fans! We would love to meet with you for a free consultation. In the heart of historic downtown Brenham stands Ranch Antiques, a unique furniture store owned by Tami Redshaw and Vicky Brio-nes. Since Tami and Vicki took over the store in 2010, their passion has been to create a wonderful and classic shopping experience with distinctive, one-of-a-kind pieces hand-picked on their many trips to Brazil. Vicki is originally from Brazil and offers much knowledge and insight when selecting pieces and working with the vendors. Together with Tami, an experienced entrepreneur and a Texan at heart, they make the perfect business team as they bring a unique cultural experience to the store.

Ranch Antiques offers beautiful, hand-crafted and personally picked antiques and reproductions that give insight into Brazil’s colonial past, with many of the pieces colorfully painted in the traditional style. Reproductions are made from heirloom woods, salvaged from the 18th and 19th century Brazilian haciendas, ranches, and churches. Among the most popular items offered from Brazil are magnificent single-plank tables, custom made in any size. In addition, domestic items by local artists and artisans make their presence in the store, most notably dining tables, Western art, home elements and gifts, accessories, their newest line of beautiful leather furniture available by custom order, and a pair of gorgeous American-made, metal horse sculptures that greet customers at the store entrance.

New Brazilian finds arrived this spring, and the store is now overflowing with beautiful items. Always looking for new, fresh merchandise, Vicky recently returned from Brazil again after selecting the new-est array of gorgeous pieces that will be available this fall.

With thanks to the Brenham community, Ranch Antiques is committed to continue growing its business with beauty, elegance, and quality.

A cheery voice belonging to Tricia Barksdale finds customers throughout the day. After making temporary homes in places like Martha’s Bloomers in Navasota and the Old Bryan Marketplace in Downtown Bryan, her flowers found a permanent home four years ago when Barksdale opened her shop, Tricia Barksdale Designs: A Floral Gathering in College Station.

A Master’s Degree in Horticulture Therapy from Texas A&M came alongside her love for gardening. This love found her at a young age as she remembers long days with her mom, harvesting their gardens and reaping beautiful bounties. Closely following graduation, Barksdale integrated her knowledge of floral culture and her love for people and dedicated herself to special needs therapy. In 1982, Barksdale started a non-profit in the Bryan Garden Center which existed to employ those with physical, emotional, and mental needs. Repetitive work in the gardens such as watering and weeding coupled with adult interaction in the workplace served as therapy for the first ten employees.

After four years, Barksdale resigned from the non-profit to have children and nurture her own family. But her heart for people and her emotional tie to the floral culture led her to start her own business. A place where collections of buds and herbs find one another in tightly wound bundles, ready for a bride’s hand or a table’s centerpiece. Barksdale’s trade is beautiful, natural arrange-ments. She is an artist. And her shop, her sanctuary.

Tricia is a full-service florist creating unique, custom designs for everything from newborns, birthdays, weddings, graduations, anniversaries, and more. In addition to floral design, the store offers an extensive line of ever-chang-ing gifts. New in September will be the addition of a live feed on the web-site where fresh daily arrangements will be announced for store pick-up. Order online, by phone, or stop by the store to visit Tricia and see her creativity blossom into beautiful custom floral designs.

Most women appreciate and understand the significance of getting regular mammograms. But that doesn’t lessen the anxiety that often accompanies the procedure. While the exam itself is relatively easy, waiting for the test results, sometimes for days, can be stressful. But now, a new service at Brenham Clinic is helping eliminate those worries. Along with the addition of digital mammography, Brenham Clinic is offering same-day digital mammography reads. After a patient completes her digital mammogram, Dr. John McIntire, Board Certified Radiologist, will conduct a preliminary interpretation of each mammogram and provide the patient with a preliminary report (pending comparison to previous films). If additional views are required, the Brenham Clinic team is able to complete those at that time. If ultrasound is needed, that procedure can also be provided at the same time. The goal is to give patients their results as quickly as possible to elimi-nate the anxiety and stress of waiting – without knowing. For patients who do not have time to review results with Dr. McIntire, we will provide a same day phone call from Dr. McIntire.

Two of the many women who have benefitted from Brenham Clinic’s long history of support for breast cancer patients and survivors are Debbie Mackey and Darlene Her-rmann. Debbie is a bereavement counselor with Hospice Brazos Valley – Brenham, one of the founding members of Bosom Buddies, and a breast cancer survivor. Darlene is also a member of Bosom Buddies and a breast cancer survivor for the past twenty-four years.

“When I was diagnosed in December 1999, it hit me totally out of the blue,” Debbie recalls. “I discovered the lump myself and immediately got checked, but was told it was already close to Stage III malignancy.” Debbie said she was shocked to learn she had breast cancer since there was no history of the disease in her family. “What I didn’t know then, but found out later, is that 85% of women with breast cancer have no family history.”

Through an aggressive treatment plan that included 12 rounds of chemotherapy, 35 radia-tion treatments and five years of taking Tamoxifen, Debbie is now cancer free. But her brush with the dreaded disease changed her life forever. It also opened doors to new rela-tionships that have benefitted hundreds of Washington County women. When asked to share her story in October 2000 to the Washington County Commissioners Court, Deb-bie had no idea that her speaking engagement would help blossom an idea that would help breast cancer victims and survivors for years to come. That idea was Bosom Buddies.

In 2001, Bosom Buddies began meeting monthly and putting to action their plan for community outreach. “From the beginning, our mission was to give back to our commu-nity which had been so supportive of all of us when we were battling cancer,” Debbie said. “Besides sharing a common experience with cancer, the members of Bosom Buddies share a common calling to ‘pay it forward.’

And that’s exactly what the group has done for the past 11 years. Through an agreement with the Brenham Clinic, Bosom Buddies has provided more than 100 free mammo-grams for women who couldn’t afford one. It also helps families of loved ones fighting cancer by raising funds for incidentals like food and fuel. In 2011, Bosom Buddies also began awarding scholarships to graduating seniors at Brenham High School, having awarded nine scholarships to date.

Today, Bosom Buddies has more than 50 members, including Darlene Herrmann, all committed to supporting the community and indi-viduals fighting breast cancer. With the help of Brenham Clinic, her surgeon Dr. Jeff Stoltenberg, oncologist Dr. Kumud Tripathy of Bryan’s Cancer Center, and nurse Betty McCarty, Darlene celebrates each new day to the fullest with her Bosom Buddies friends after being cancer-free for over twenty years. Darlene’s experience with Brenham Clinic has always been nothing but positive, caring, and supportive, and she is passionately involved in reaching women today through Bosom Bud-dies’ monthly meetings, annual fundraisers, and partnership with the clinic’s new, life-saving digital mammography technology.

Same-day mammography reports was an idea that had been discussed at Brenham Clinic for some time. While it presented logistical chal-lenges, the clinic refused to back down and kept looking for ways to make it happen. Then, with the addition of new digital mammography to its comprehensive Breast Health program in December 2011, the final hurdle was cleared.

“Digital mammography is significantly better for the patient,” said Dr. McIntire. “It’s more precise and the procedure is much quicker.” That’s because digital mammography produces exceptionally sharp images by capturing an electronic picture of the breast in digital format. Once the digital images are transmitted to a workstation, the images are analyzed to determine the precise location and extent of the disease. Since the images appear on a computer screen, they can be adjusted and manipulated for size, brightness and contrast to see certain areas more clearly.

“This technology offers the potential for significant advances in breast cancer diagnosis, including lower radiation doses, reduced breast compression pressure and improved breast cancer detection rates,” Dr. McIntire said. “The typical digital mammogram takes only 5-10 min-utes and the patient is assured a much more thorough diagnosis.”

The cost of the new digital mammography equipment is $600,000, an investment The Brenham Clinic and College Station Medical Center are proud to make for the health, safety and welfare of all women in Washington County and surrounding areas.Brenham Clinic is a supporter and sponsor of numerous organizations, groups, businesses, and events committed to benefiting the community. Their annual event in support of breast cancer awareness, “Paint the Town Pink”, will take place October 25 with several other events to leading up to the day in the month of October.
