The past decade has seen enormous changes in BMWmotorcycles, just as it has inmotorcycling in general. Yet whileother makers have seeminglychased a single-minded goal ofgreater horsepower, BMW hasnever lost sight of its core values, matching higher performance withsimilar improvements in reliability, sophistication, and its traditionalemphasis on what could be called“livability” – a BMW’s inherentcapacity to please its owner forboth the short term and the longhaul. While other makers seek tosatisfy those riders who live for theSunday ride, BMW builds bikesfor the other six days of the week, and believes that chasing horizonscan be as much fun as tilting them. The rightness of this thinking isobvious from the success of thecurrent lineup of BMW motorcy-cles. 2000 sales climbed to nearly75,000 motorcycles worldwide, with the United States taking arecord 12,047 bikes. In addition, the past year saw total motorcycleproduction at BMW’s Berlin plant –built in 1967 – pass the 1 millionmark, a remarkable figure giventhe exclusivity and premiumpositioning of its products.

Also significant, BMW’s motorcy-cles have consistently won thehearts of the motorcycling press –a notoriously tough group toplease. Beginning with the original1994 R 1100 RS, the R259 Boxershave garnered a bevy of “Bestof” and “Bike of the Year” awardsfrom the U.S. press, both insideand outside of motorcycling. Thelatest generation R Series – theR 1150 GS as well as the R 1150 RTand “naked” R 1150 R – haveextended this string. For a morecomplete listing of recent awardswon by BMW motorcycles, seepage 7.The R259 Boxers have also provided BMW entrée into othersegments. 1998 saw the company’sfirst foray into the cruiser market, and the original R 1200 C hassince spawned a complete line ofcruisers with the Euro, Montanaand Phoenix. 1999’s all-new K 1200 LT brought the luxurytouring concept to an entirely newlevel and quickly rose to becomenot only BMW’s best-seller butmotorcycling’s best-sellingheavyweight tourer. Similarly, theoriginal F 650 represented thefirst entry-level BMW in years, but its replacement F 650 GS

expands that appeal as the firsttrue lightweight adventure-tourer,bringing such leading edge features as three-way catalyticconverter, Motronic engine management and antilock brakesto an all-new class. The F 650 GStakes its place alongside a thoroughly updated R 1150 GS,which continues as the worldbenchmark heavyweight adventure-touring motorcycle. This year, BMW’s expandedlineup represents the mostsophisticated two-wheel offeringsin the world, bridging the worldof motorcycling with 12 models:F Series – ABS becomes availableon the Dakar version of BMW’slightweight for 2002, putting it onpar with the standard F 650 GS.Otherwise, the single returnsbasically unchanged this year.Motronic fuel-injection, a three-waycatalytic converter and its innov-ative underseat fuel tank ensurethe GS remains ahead of anythingelse in its class. Unique styling, asophisticated chassis and a hostof practical options make thissuperlative adventure-touringsingle even more versatile thanbefore, as an across-town commuter or cross-continent

tourer. As before, the standardGS is joined by the limited-production F 650 GS Dakar, withspecific changes to make it evenmore off-road capable.R Series – The list of second-generation R259 Boxer-twinsexpands to include three newmodels for 2002: the R 1150 R,R 1150 RT and R 1150 RS. Allthree include a complete updatewith a new displacement, fresh-ened styling, a revised chassis,six-speed transmission, EVOlutionbrakes and Integral ABS as eitherstandard or optional equipment. These three 1150s join the R 1150 GS as the most up-to-datetwins on the market. Returningthis year is a quartet of cruisers, beginning with the original R 1200 C, and including thedark-themed Euro, solo-orientedPhoenix and touring-orientedMontana. Completing the Boxerlineup, the 98-horsepower R 1100 S also adds the EVOlutionbrakes as standard equipment.K Series – The company’s mostpowerful motorcycle, the 130-hpK 1200 RS, now offers sportiersuspension tuning as well asstandard Integral antilock asstandard equipment. As Europe’s oldest existingmotorcycle manufacturer, BMWhas a history that goes back to1916, as a purveyor of world-record altitude aircraft engines, the basis for the white-blue“spinning propeller” that is theBMW Roundel. In 1923, a talented designernamed Max Friz introduced thecompany’s first motorcycle, theR 32. The bike immediatelyestablished BMW as a maker ofhigh quality, innovative and practical motorcycles. With itstwin-cylinder, horizontally opposedengine and shaft drive, the R 32also set a pattern for BMWmotorcycles still reflected intoday’s R259 Boxers.Six years later the companyintroduced its first automobile, and quickly established itself as amaker of high quality, innovativeautomobiles as well. Within adecade, a string of motorcycleand automotive race wins andworld speed records gave theyoung company an enviablestanding as a maker of excep-tional high-performance motor-cycles and cars. Each succeedinggeneration has elevated this reputation to new heights.BMW stands for BayerischeMotoren Werke, or, in English,Bavarian Motor Works. Munich, the home of BMW, is the capitalof the German state of Bavaria, and “Bavarian” is an importantelement of the BMW heritage.

Just being European implies elements of tradition, of a specialhuman-machine relationship.Being German means BMWsare developed in an environmentwhere workmanship is virtuallyan obsession. These are motor-cycles designed for the rigors ofthe Autobahn’s unlimited speed, for traversing the nearby Alpinepasses with surefooted confidenceand unsurpassed weather protection. These factors aloneset BMW apart from many of itscompetitors – including thosewho attempt to graft a Europeanimage into products whose heritage is not European. But BMWs are not merely Euro-pean, or just German. They areBavarian. In Bavaria there’s acertain joy of living that must beexperienced to be fully under-stood. Bavaria is in the south ofGermany; those who know itbest say it combines Germanperfectionism with the more outgoing spirit of Italy. No wonder then, that the tradi-tional BMW slogan is Freude amFahren – ”Joy in Driving.” Thecreators of BMW express this joyin quality of construction, perfor-mance, handling and a less tangible but equally importantquality: balance. This last meansBMWs never favor one aspect ofperformance over another, offeringa perfectly proportioned blend ofpower, handling, braking andcomfort that will satisfy their

owners long after the lure ofstraightline speed or trendy lookshas faded. It also means amotorcycle that melds with itspilot to create a single entity, wherebike and rider move to the paceset by the road.Just like its cars, BMW motorcy-cles attract a specific type ofperson. The world over, BMWowners are themselves dynamicpeople. BMW has always attractedpeople from life’s fast lane, andthat is the synergy upon which theBMW philosophy is built: excep-tional people, creating outstandingautomobiles and motorcycles forspecial people to enjoy. It’s possible, at least for the casualobserver, to look at a BMW andask, “Why does it cost so much?Aren’t there comparable motor-cycles for less?”Superficially, it may seem thatway. But a BMW’s appeal runsmuch deeper. Much of what onepays for in a BMW is under theskin, or of a subtle nature. Anengine with lots of power, or

supposedly racing-inspired suspension, may be a powerfulselling feature, but there’s noguarantee such features enhancean owner’s ultimate appreciation. That’s particularly true with manyof today’s hyper-performancemotorcycles, which often tradeversatility and comfort for single-minded performance. In a BMW, every feature is backedby a heritage of engineering, design, quality, experience, test-ing, development and yes, thoseunlimited-speed Autobahnenand the Alpine passes just to thesouth of Munich. It’s a heritageunique to BMW, unmatched byother motorcycle manufacturers. And in a clear contrast to whatthe competitive situation was fiveor six years ago, the BMW heritage, product attributes andquality are offered today at thoroughly competitive, evencompelling prices.A thorough test ride will demon-strate the exceptional value builtinto every BMW.

Drivetrain

Low CG engine designsMulti-cylinder engines – twins, triples or fours – often bring withthem a marked increase in theheight of a bike’s center of gravity(CG), as the head, cylinders andcarburetors typically sit high, wellabove the crankshaft. A low CG,however, remains one of thebeauties of the horizontallyopposed twin, since it keeps thecylinders, heads and associatedvalve gear at the same height asthe crankshaft.Similarly, when BMW engineersset about developing the K Seriesfour-cylinders, they designed theengine to lay on its side, againplacing the head, camshafts andvalve gear on the same horizontalplane as the crankshaft. The horizontal/longitudinal design ofthe BMW four-cylinders also provide the added benefit ofkeeping the valve gear, intake, exhaust and even the engine’scrankshaft readily accessible formaintenance, unlike the typicalupright, transverse engine.Longitudinal Engine layoutsEngines fall into one of two cate-gories: transverse or longitudinal. The crankshaft on a transverseengine, such as BMW’s Rotax-powered F Series, lies across thebike’s frame, parallel to the axles.Longitudinal engines, such as theK and R Series bikes, feature anengine with its crankshaft parallelto the direction of motion.

The main advantage of one overthe other depends primarily onwhether the motorcycle is chain- orshaft-driven. Since the crankshaft, transmission shafts, and rear axleare all parallel on a transverseengine, chain-drive works bestwith this engine type. Chain driveis also significantly less expensivethan shaft drive, making it thebetter choice on price-sensitivelightweights such as the F 650.The longitudinal layout adaptsexceptionally well to shaft-drive,as the engine’s drivetrain makesonly one right-angle turn, at therear wheel. Yet, a number ofshaft-drive motorcycles featuretransverse engines, which requirean additional 90-degree gearsetbehind the transmission to “turn”the power to align it with the driveshaft. By designing engines withlongitudinal crankshafts, BMW’sengineers have maintained theefficiency of Max Friz’s original1923 design, without the addi-tional weight and power lossfrom another “turn.”Shaft driveWhen BMW revealed Max Friz’sfirst motorcycle at the 1923 ParisMotor Show, the bike boastedtwo unusual features that havesince become BMW hallmarks:the horizontally opposed twin-cylinder engine and shaft finaldrive. Clean, efficient, reliableand virtually maintenance free,shaft-drive provided a sensiblealternative to the belt- or chain-

drives of BMW’s competitors.Since that original R 32, everymulti-cylinder BMW has beenshaft-driven, thus providing theperfect complement to BMW’stouring-oriented lineup.Air coolingBMW’s horizontally opposedtwins also retain the air-cooledsimplicity of Max Friz’s originaldesign. By utilizing the coolingproperties of the engine oil, BMW’sengineers were able to design alubrication system as the twinsgrew in power output that guar-antees sufficient cooling withoutresorting to the added complexityand weight of liquid cooling. In the Boxers, the oil pumps circulate both pressurized oil andcooling oil. Special passages ineach head provide additionalcooling oil to areas around theexhaust valve seats, and retain oilafter shutdown to prevent carbonbuildup. Specially shaped cylinderfins reduce noise without needingadditional silencing blocks. Ahigh-strength, low-wear Gilnisilnickel-silicon coating on thecylinder bores minimizes wearand oil consumption and letsengine heat escape more easily.Sintered-and-forged connecting rodsThe R Series Boxer-twins (exceptthe R 1100 S) utilize sintered-and-forged (akin to baking, atechnique initially developed forBMW’s original 7 Series V-12)steel connecting rods, which are

“broken” at the big end after theyare “baked.” The broken surfacemeans the two pieces can onlyfit together one way, requiring nolocating pins or any furthermachining of the mating surfaces. The “baking” eliminates the internal stress points that candevelop in the connecting rodduring forging. Further, since therods require no additional machin-ing, they are not only simpler tomanufacture, but virtually identicalin weight. The same sintered-metal design is used for the individual cam lobes, which arepressed onto hardened steelcamshafts.Combined with short-skirted pistons weighing nearly one-thirdless than the previous air-cooledBoxer’s, the entire piston/rodassemblies optimize engine balance for smoother operation, plus reduced weight for easierrevving and less wear.Single plate clutch withhydraulic actuationSince the original R 32 of 1923,BMW motorcycles have featuredautomotive-style, single-disc dryclutches. Still used on all BMWmulti-cylinder engines, thedurable, simple design and dryoperation provides many miles oflow effort, smooth operation andtrouble-free service. The hydraulicactuation now used throughoutthe multi-cylinder range extendsthe low-effort, trouble-free designeven further. By eliminating the

conventional clutch cable, thehydraulic actuation not only cutsfriction and reduces lever effort, but its self-adjusting design eliminates a traditional servicerequirement.DOHC four-valve headsAll BMW motorcycle engines feature four-valve combustionchambers, which increase intakeand exhaust gas flow when com-pared to two-valve designs. Thebetter airflow of four-valve headsoccurs throughout the engine’spowerband, not only improvinghigh-rpm power, but boostinglow-end and midrange as well. That’s why BMW engines typicallyproduce 80 percent – or more –of their peak torque from 2500rpm all the way to redline, makingthem exceedingly responsive inreal-world use.In addition, the F and K Seriesengines feature double overheadcamshafts with bucket tappets.Under most circumstances, thisis considered the most direct, efficient valve actuation system.Furthermore, the bucket tappetsprovide exceptional service inter-vals; the K Series engines, forexample, rarely need valve adjust-ments after their initial service. This traditional DOHC valve trainwould make the horizontallyopposed engines too wide, however, so BMW’s engineersdeveloped the High-Cam Conceptfor the R Series Boxer-twins. Thissystem utilizes a single camshaft

per side, placed below the valves, actuating them through tappets, short pushrods and rocker arms. The rockers feature easily main-tained, screw-and-locknut valveadjustment.Chain-driven camshaftsAll BMW powerplants (motorcycleand car) feature chain-drivencamshafts with automatic chainadjusters. These are quiet, efficient, low maintenance and, unlike belts, designed to last thelife of the engine.Electronic engine managementBMW pioneered electronic enginemanagement systems for motor-cycles on the 1983 K100. As performance demands haverisen and emission requirementstightened, the Digital Motor Electronics systems have beenrefined to meet the demands forexceptional throttle responseand power with minimum fuelconsumption and emissions.Today’s Digital Motor Electronicssystems simultaneously provideprecise control of fuel delivery, ignition timing and emissions.Together with the standard three-way catalytic converter now usedon all BMW motorcycles, theBosch MA 2.2, 2.4 and newBMW Engine Management System (BMS) make BMW’smotorcycle engines the cleanestin the world. To guarantee theyremain that way through theirentire lifetime, the Digital Motor

Electronic system also featuresadaptive control that compensatesfor engine wear as the milesaccumulate. The DME systemsproduce a marked improvementover a carbureted engine, anddemonstrate that there needn’tbe a conflict among the demandsof instant response, good poweroutput, high fuel mileage and lowemissions. While most motorcycle makershave only recently switched toelectronic fuel injection, the BoschMA 2.4 system used on BMW’stwo- and four-cylinder motorcyclesrepresents the company’s thirdgeneration of electronic enginecontrols. In addition to providingprecise control of fuel, ignitionand emissions, the MA 2.4 andnew BMS on the F 650 GS eliminate the need for a manualchoke or fast-idle lever, a long-standing fixture on motorcyclehandlebars. What’s more, thesystem “memorizes” faults for laterdiagnosis, so even intermittentflaws can be diagnosed andrepaired the first time.Mobile test computerSince their inception on the originalK Series, BMW engine manage-ment systems have included afault-retention program to simplifytroubleshooting. The new BMSand Bosch MA 2.4 systems goone step further, with a mobiletest computer (MoDiTeC) thatenables technicians to quickly

diagnose faults in the field usinga special laptop computer. Thediagnostic also outlines guidedand unguided repair procedures,so the technician can fix theproblem with no guesswork.Six-speed gearboxThe K 1200 RS sported a numberof firsts for BMW at its 1997introduction, including the motor-cycle division’s first six-speedgearbox. The transmission includescloser gear spacing, providing amore consistent flow of powerfrom one gear to the next.Smoother, more precise gearselection is appreciated by anyrider, so this basic gearbox is nowfeatured on all second-generationR Series bikes as well.Moving the swingarm mountingfrom the rear of the transmissionhousing to the frame reduced thestresses on the gearbox, enablingBMW engineers to make thegears narrower. This makes thetransmission itself more compact, and the narrower gear faces createless noise than the previous five-speed. The reduced stress allowedBMW to double the service intervals on the six-speed, from12,500 to 25,000 miles. This transmission has providedthe basis for the latest five-speedgearboxes on the R 1200 C andthe K 1200 LT, also featuringframe-mounted swingarms. TheLT gearbox also provides BMW’sfirst reversing aid for motorcycles.

Stainless-steel exhaust systemsAs they have for years, all BMWmotorcycles boast stainless-steelexhaust systems. Although signif-icantly more expensive than thedouble-wall carbon steel systemsused by other manufacturers,stainless-steel resists corrosionfar better, so a BMW exhaust willlast virtually the life of the motor-cycle. As an added benefit, the K 1200 RS also sports an aluminum cover over its muffler, easily replaced after any cosmeticdamage. A similar stainless-steelpiece covers the muffler on the K 1200 LT.

Telelever front suspension

BMW’s history includes a traditionof innovation, especially in sus-pension design. In 1935, BMWbecame the first motorcyclemanufacturer to offer a hydrauli-cally damped telescopic fork. Thepopularity of BMWs as sidecarmounts underscored the tele-scopic’s shortcomings, leadingthe company’s engineers to adoptthe Earles fork. This design usesa second swingarm and pair ofshocks at the front. As sidecaruse declined, BMW discontinuedthe Earles fork in 1969.The widespread use of telescopicforks belies their inherent problems, including excessive brake dive, internal friction, and – especially –bending under braking. But alternatives to the telescopic forkusually have their own set of

compromises: excess weight, limited steering lock, poor steer-ing feel or awkward styling. Byseparating the steering and suspension into different functions, the Telelever system on BMW’sR- and K Series motorcycles notonly addresses all these com-plaints, but provides additionalbenefits as well.Extremely rigid designThe Telelever concept differsfrom a telescopic fork in a varietyof important ways. A conventionalmotorcycle depends on thestrength of the frame around thesteering head and the fork tubesto control chassis flex. BMW’sTelelever, however, spreads thesebending forces throughout thechassis so they aren’t concen-trated in the fork or steering head. The key to the design is a long, widely spaced horizontal controlarm that not only braces the forktubes, but acts as a main sus-pension member, as well. On theBoxer-twins, this arm runs fromthe engine crankcase just abovethe cylinders to a cross brace onthe fork sliders above the frontwheel. The K 1200 RS and LTuse a slightly different arrange-ment, with a rectangular-shapedarm mounting to the frame itselfjust above the engine. Twospherical joints, one at the crossbrace and the other under theupper triple clamp, allow the forkto slide up and down as well aspivot side to side.

A spring/shock unit bolts to thecontrol arm. At the top, theshock anchors to either a shortaluminum subframe (R Series) orto the main frame itself (K Series). The inherent strength of thedesign explains why all of theTelelever-equipped BMWs – fromthe 525-pound R 1150 R to the834-pound K 1200 LT – possesssuperb chassis rigidity with relativelysmall, 35mm stanchion tubes.Stability under brakingThe Telelever design boastsnumerous advantages over aconventional fork, particularly itsresistance to bending duringbraking. Even during light braking,a telescopic fork acts as a lever, flexing the fork stanchion tubesand the steering head of the frame. This flexing reduces steering pre-cision and causes binding in thefork tubes, making suspensiontravel harsh. The control arm on the Teleleverbraces the fork, channeling thebraking force directly into thestrongest part of the chassis –the engine on the Boxer-twins orthe main frame section on the K-bikes. As a result, the forcestrying to bend the steering headand the fork tubes are less thanon a conventional chassis. Thisgives the Telelever-equippedBMWs exceptional stability andsuspension compliance evenduring hard braking, and makes

the design the perfect complementto BMW’s new more-powerfulEVO brakes.Inherent anti-diveLike an automobile suspension, the Telelever provides an effectiveinherent anti-dive. While othermotorcycles can reduce brakedive only through stiffer springsor harsher damping, the Telelevercan be tuned to counteractbrake dive just by changing thesuspension geometry. On the K Series and R 1150 models theTelelever eliminates 90 percent ofthe dive compared to a conven-tional fork; on the remainder ofthe Boxer-twins the reduction is70 percent.Smooth operationAction on the Telelever is smootherdue to the centrally mountedspring/shock unit. The singleshock also makes the suspensioneasier to tune. In addition, thelarge amount of overlap betweenthe inner and outer fork tubesreduces binding, so the forkmoves more smoothly.Extremely low maintenanceUnlike a conventional fork, theTelelever suspension is virtuallymaintenance free. The shock/spring unit requires no service, and the fork’s lubricating oilnever needs changing. Thespherical joints are permanentlysealed, and only call for aninspection every 60,000 miles.

Chassis & rear suspension

Paralever rear suspensionClimb on an older twin-shock orearly Monolever-equipped BMW –or any other shaft-driven motor-cycle – and one of the first thingsyou’ll notice is the pronouncedrise in the rear suspension duringacceleration. The quirk occursbecause the torque transmitted tothe rear wheel under accelerationalso tends to rotate the rear-drivehousing – and the rigidly attachedswingarm – in the oppositedirection. This rotation then liftsthe rear of the bike. For years, the primary way ofcontrolling this torque-reactionwas to lengthen the swingarm, which reduces the mechanicaladvantage available to lift therear suspension. A second, evenmore effective solution arrivedwith the introduction of BMW’sfirst Paralever suspension, on theR 100 GS in 1987. The Paralevereffectively eliminates such atorque-reaction by placing a second U-joint and pivot nearthe rear-drive housing. A parallelstrut underneath the drive shaftprevents the rear housing fromrotating. The design allows therear-drive unit to “float,” muchlike a full-floating rear brake. The Paralever maintains full suspension travel. It also preventsdrive torque under accelerationfrom affecting the rear suspension

compliance – something thatoccurs even with chain-drivenmotorcycles. Even under acceler-ation BMW’s Paralever maintainssuspension compliance and stillallows a full range of wheel travel. The strut directs any rotationaltorque directly into the chassisso the suspension remains compliant even under full throttle.By using a direct-acting shockabsorber, the Paralever alsoeliminates the added complexity, friction and weight of the typicallinkage-type single-shock rearsuspension.Monolever rear suspensionIt’s been more than two decadessince BMW introduced the firstmodern, single-side swingarmon a production motorcycle, the1980 R 80 GS. In addition to itsclean, simple looks, the GS’sMonolever single-shock suspen-sion offered the dual advantagesof lighter weight and an easilyremoved, automotive-style bolt-on wheel. Those simple lines andclean appearance also explainwhy the Monolever reappearedon the R 1200 C.A 3.5-inch longer swingarmmeans the R 1200 C’s suspen-sion works nearly as well as aParalever in controlling any shaft-drive torque reaction. Apair of universal joints and a torsion damper provide smoothpower transmission to the rear

wheel. In addition to giving the R 1200 C its unique rear styling, the single-shock Monolever offersthe same clean running and easeof maintenance as the moresophisticated Paralever system.Cast-aluminum framesBehind their Telelever front sus-pensions, the K and R Seriesmotorcycles all feature precision,die-cast aluminum-alloy frames.Die-casting allows BMW engineersto vary the shape and thicknessof the casting to resist thestresses specific to each area, ensuring a lightweight yet rigidstructure. (BMW used similarthinking with its previous tubular-steel frames, which featuredoval-section tubing in key areas.)On all the bikes, a second, tubular-steel framework supports theseat and tail section. The original R259 Boxers use theengine as a stressed member, sothe pivots for both the Teleleverand Paralever mount to the engineand transmission. The frame itselfconsisted only of a short castsubframe connecting the enginewith the upper Telelever mount.Beginning with the R 1100 S andR 1200 C, new R Series bikesdepart slightly from this ground-breaking design. Paralever modelsinclude a casting that surroundsthe engine and provides a mountat the rear for the swingarm. TheR 1200 C mounts its Monoleverswingarm to a tubular-steel subframe.

The rubber engine mounts onthe K 1200 RS and LT precludedusing the engine as a stressedmember, so these bikes feature afull frame design with wide sidebeams between the Telelevermounts and the swingarm pivots.Additionally, the frames featureinternal, honeycomb reinforcement, which creates an extremelystrong piece that minimizesweight. The result is a chassisthat produces superlative handlingand stability while completelyisolating the rider from enginevibration.Adjustable suspensionThe changing demands of ridersand the changing loads onmotorcycles make it virtuallyimpossible to design a motorcyclesuspension that can be all thingsto all people. Consequently, allBMW motorcycles allow riders totailor the rear suspension to differing loads and their own riding style. All models boastadjustable rear spring preload, and all twins and fours (exceptthe R 1200 C) feature infinitelyvariable rebound damping at therear. In addition, all but the 1200 Cand R 1150 RT feature adjustablerebound damping at the front.Unlike the majority of single-shocksuspensions, all of BMW’s systemsfeature simple adjustments forthe rear spring preload. Preloadon the F 650 GS, K Series andParalever-equipped Boxers adjusts

hydraulically via a convenienthandwheel. Damping changeson these bikes require only ascrewdriver. On the R 1100 S, asmall thumbwheel at the front ofthe fuel tank allows the rider toalter the front rebound settingright from the saddle.Cast-alloy wheelsIn addition to its groundbreakingfairing, the R 100 RS was alsonotable as one of the first motor-cycles to replace traditional wirespokes with cast-alloy wheels.Compared to wire spokes, castwheels are stronger, lighter, moredurable and virtually maintenancefree.Since then, BMW’s cast-alloywheels have evolved to be evenstronger, lighter and simpler thanthat early “snowflake” design, and also allow the fitment oftubeless tires, which are lighter, cooler running and capable ofhigher speeds than tube-type.Also, tubeless tires are much lesslikely to deflate quickly whenpunctured, giving them a marginof safety over tube-type. Moreover, tubeless tires are vastly easier tofix since they can be repaired withthe wheel and tire still in place. It’s also worth noting that allBMW motorcycles with tubelesstires also carry tire-repair kits asstandard equipment. Finally, the new five-double-spoke wheel design eliminatesthe separate carrier for the disc

brake rotors, making these wheelseven lighter than the previousthree-spoke style. Introduced onthe K 1200 RS, these are currentlyused on all two- and four-cylinderBMWs except the R 1150 GSand some R 1200 C models.Cross Spoke wheelsSpoke wheels still offer severaladvantages over their castcousins. These include not onlytheir classic appearance but alsoa slight elasticity, which providesa cushioning effect in off-roaduse. Unfortunately, traditional wirewheels carry several compromises, including spoke breakage andreplacement, as well as an incom-patibility with tubeless tires.BMW’s Cross Spoke wheels(standard on the R 1150 GS andR 1200 C) address these complaints. By using straight-pull(unbent) spokes that extend fromone side of the wheel hub to theopposite side of the wheel rim,the wheels boast spokes that aresignificantly stronger than con-ventional types. Their straight-pulldesign also means individualspokes can be replaced easily, without disassembling the wheel.More important, since the spokesattach to the outer edge of thealloy rim rather than its center, the center of the rim isn’t shotthrough with mounting holes. This means Cross Spoke wheelscan handle tubeless tires – lighter, cooler running and capable of

higher speeds than the tube-typetires required by traditional wirewheels. They also don’t requirebead locks, further reducingweight and simplifying tiremounting.

Ergonomics & aerodynamics

Aerodynamic bodyworkBMW turned the motorcyclingworld on its head in 1976 withthe introduction of the R 100 RS.As the world’s first sport-touringmotorcycle, the RS was also thefirst production bike to offer awind-tunnel designed full fairingas standard equipment. Thatmove placed the company at theforefront of two-wheel aerody-namics, a position it holds to thisday. In fact, BMW’s use of fairingscan be traced back to 1937, whenErnst Henne set a world land-speed record of 173 mph with afully enclosed, supercharged500cc Boxer.Since the original groundbreakingRS, the company has honed itswork in the wind tunnel to a fineedge. By designing shapes thatnot only enhance rider protectionbut also improve handling, BMWhas shown that the science ofaerodynamics involves more thanmere wind deflection. Whetherit’s the way the front fender onthe “naked” R 1150 R directs airinto the bike’s oil-coolers, or theturbulence-reducing Kamm-tailed

luggage on the K 1200 LT, thecurrent BMW lineup reflectsthousands of hours of painstakingwind-tunnel design work. For instance, both K-bikes featurevents designed to duct the warmair from the radiators back intothe air stream, away from therider. And all BMWs feature aminimum of abrupt protrusionsto ensure smooth airflow overbike and rider, while each fairing –from the abbreviated F 650 GSand R 1100 S pieces to the fullyenclosed R 1150 RT and K 1200 LTbodywork – provides an appro-priate still-air cocoon for riderand passenger. Even optionsand accessories such as saddle-bags or top cases have beenshaped to minimize their effecton handling.Adjustable airflowThe company’s work withadjustable ergonomics extendseven to aerodynamic aids, suchas the movable deflectors belowthe K 1200 LT’s mirrors. Further-more, with the exception of the R 1100 S, all bikes with full-fairingsfeature adjustable windshields, either manually (R 1150 RS, R 1150 GS and K 1200 RS) orelectrically (R 1150 RT and K1200 LT). In the case of the R-RT, R-GS and K-LT, the wind-shields adjust for both angle andheight to accommodate shortand tall riders.

Adjustable ergonomicsBMW engineers have spent agreat deal of time designing bikesthat can adapt to riders of almostevery size. Brake and clutchlevers on all BMW multis providea four-position adjustment forreach, while all but the R 1200 C,R 1150 R and R 1100 S also offertwo- or three-position adjustableseat heights for the rider. With itsextra-low seat height, the R 1200 Coffers its own seating variableswith a movable, three-positionpillion pad that doubles as apilot’s backrest.Handlebars and footpegs arealso adjustable on the K 1200 RS.Finally, all faired motorcycles sportheight- or position-adjustablewindshields; on adventure-touringmodels they can be removedentirely.Ergonomically shapedswitchgearBMW’s hand controls, with indi-vidual pushbuttons for right andleft turnsignals and ergonomicallyshaped switches for the horn,high/low beam and signal cancel, are uniquely shaped for the humanhand. Although markedly differentfrom the typical motorcycleswitchgear, their intuitive designmakes them extremely easy touse once the rider becomesfamiliar with their design.Although more conventionallyconfigured, the F Series handgripsfeature redesigned switches, with

large buttons that can be easilyoperated even while wearingheavy gloves. In addition, the luxury touring K 1200 LT allows the rider tocontrol all of the onboard electronics – including cruisecontrol, trip computer, AM/FM-cassette stereo and optional CDchanger – without taking hishands from the handgrips. TheLT, K-RS and R 1100 S also feature self-canceling turnsignals, and all BMW motorcycles includefour-way hazard flashers.Active safety systemsAll safety systems tend to fall intoone of two categories: passiveand active. Passive systems, such as motorcycle helmets orautomotive airbags, protect youduring an accident. BMW has along tradition of offering topquality motorcycle gear, fromleathers to boots and gloves, designed to protect the riderduring an accident.Active systems protect you fromhaving an accident in the firstplace. Active safety systemsinclude such things as handling, acceleration and braking, andare particularly important inmotorcycle design due to thevulnerability of the rider. BMWhas been a longstanding advocateof active safety, introducing awide range of measures designedto keep the rider safe and accident-free while on the road.

Antilock brakingWith their introduction on jet aircraft, and then automobiles, antilock brakes were heralded asone of the most significant safetyadvances of the past half-century.After becoming the first carmakerto make antilock brakes standardon all cars in 1986, BMW thenintroduced the world’s firstmotorcycle system on the 1988K 100 RS. Over a decade later, the company has produced morethan 200,000 ABS-equippedmotorcycles worldwide, andremains the only maker in theworld to include ABS as eitheroptional or standard equipmenton all of its motorcycles. The company introduced its second generation ABS on thenew R 1100 RS in 1992, whenmost makers had yet to offer thistechnology. ABS II boasted moreaccurate wheel monitoring, increased effectiveness and better control feel, and its morecompact packaging reducedweight by nearly 10 pounds.Motorcycle Cruiser (December1997) described ABS II as “thebest investment you’ll ever makein motorcycling.” The R 1150 GSand R 1200 C variants all continuewith this exceptionally effective,well-proven system as standardequipment. As in the past, thesystem on the GS can be disabledfor off-road use.

The optional BMW/Bosch antilocksystem on the F 650 GS takes aslightly different approach tocontrolling wheel lock. Unlike theABS II found on multi-cylinderBMWs, the optional system onthe F 650 GS regulates brake-linepressure via a shuttle valve thatbleeds off excess brake pressurewhenever the system sensesimpending wheel lock. With atotal weight of 4.6 pounds, it’ssignificantly lighter and lessexpensive than ABS II, and allowsBMW to offer antilock braking onall of its motorcycles. New thisyear, this system is offered as anoption on both the F 650 GS andF 650 GS Dakar. Like its Boxer-twin stablemate, F 650 GSincludes circuitry that allows therider to switch off the ABS onloose terrain, where it might notbe appropriate.EVOlution braking with Integral ABSDespite its industry-leading position, this year BMW pushesbraking technology a step furtherwith the introduction of its Integralbrake system. The design startswith BMW’s EVOlution brakingsetup, which features largerdiameter (12.6 inches vs. 12.0)front rotors and recalibratedhydraulic ratios for reducedeffort. All-new four-piston frontcalipers feature smaller diametersfor the two leading pistons, whichimproves pad life by reducing

angular wear. Sintered metalpads provide exceptional wetweather response. Throughoutthe range, rear brakes retain thesame disc diameter and Brembocalipers as in previous years. The EVO design provides significant improvements overthe previous Brembo system inthree key areas: a) 15 percentreduction in lever effort; b) 20percent improvement in brakingpower; c) 10 percent reduction inunsprung weight over the Brembo/ABS II combination. For 2002,EVO brakes are standard on all K Series bikes, the R 1100 S andthe new R 1150 R, RS and RT.Building on this base, BMWdeveloped its latest antilockdesign, Integral ABS. Previousbraking systems, no matter howsophisticated, still depended onone highly unpredictable variablefor optimal performance – therider’s ability to provide maximumbraking while balancing front-to-rear bias. Lighter, more powerfuland more responsive than ABS II,this new Integral system not onlyprovides the added safety ofantilock braking, but dynamicallylinks front and rear brakes toprovide maximum brakingregardless of rider expertise. The design starts with the largerdiameter rotors and multi-pistoncalipers of the new EVO brakingsystem. Combined with this new

hardware is BMW’s all-new linkedbraking system, which providessimultaneous operation of thefront and rear brakes. This electro-hydraulic design differs fromless-sophisticated, hydraulic-onlyarrangements in two key areas.First, it dynamically monitors thefront-to-rear wheel load to providethe optimal brake balance betweenfront and rear wheels. Secondly, its adaptive circuitry compensatesfor such variables as a changingfuel load or the addition of luggageor a passenger. The third component of BMW’sIntegral ABS system is the antilockcircuitry itself. A more compactcontrol unit also eliminates thebrake-lever pulsing during ABSactuation. In addition to revisedelectronics, the new antilockdesign adds an electromechanicalpower-brake unit. The brakebooster is a key element in thenew design, reducing responsetime by 15 percent and, togetherwith the new EVOlution brakehardware, cutting lever effort bya whopping 50 percent. Thequicker response of the newantilock makes it possible to addthis booster without risking therider inadvertently locking a wheel.Integral ABS features either full orpartial actuation, depending onthe application. The full functiondesign (standard on the K 1200LT and R 1150 RT) actuates both

21

BM

Page 24: BMW Motorcycle Fast Facts 2002 - A&S BMW Motorcycles: Parts

front and rear brakes via eitherthe brake pedal or the hand lever. The partial system (standard onthe K 1200 RS and R 1150 RS,optional on the R 1100 S and1150 R) actuates both brakesonly from the handlever. Thebrake pedal operates only therear brake, much like a conven-tional non-linked system. Bothsystems, however, provide ABSfunction for front and rear wheels.Despite the larger brake rotors, revised calipers, power brakeunit and additional features of thenew design, BMW’s Integral ABSweighs 20 percent less than theprevious ABS II, with a total sys-tem weight below 10 pounds. Asa further safety feature, revisedsoftware not only provides self-diagnostics but also monitors thebrake- and tail-lights.Cutting edge lightingIn 1974, BMW became the firstmanufacturer to acknowledgethe superiority of quartz halogenheadlamps, equipping all of itsmotorcycles with these lights.BMW is again at the leading edgeof such technology, as part of itsactive safety design approach. The K 1200 RS and K 1200 LTmodels both feature “tandemheadlights,” pairing a halogen lowbeam and high beam, focusingthe light via a computer-designedreflector. The design casts morelight at the sides of the road, yetstill provides a superbly penetrating

beam straight ahead. The new R 1150 RT takes this design onestep further, adding a pair offlanking foglights. On the R 1100 S and R 1150 GS,asymmetrical headlamps featurean elliptical high beam, whichproduces an even more sharplyfocused, brighter light. The additional visual benefits of thesesharply focused, high-intensitylamps provide an additional margin of safety for night riding.

BMW & the environment

Catalytic convertersBMW’s current lineup demon-strates the company’s dedicationto a cleaner environment throughthe use of catalytic convertersacross the board. BMW pioneeredthe use of three-way, or closed-loop, catalytic converters in 1991,and has remained the worldleader in such technology formotorcycles. While most manu-facturers have yet to equip any oftheir bikes with them, all BMWmotorcycles in the U.S. have featured catalytic converterssince 1996, and currently offerthree-way catalytic convertersacross the board.Introduced on the K 1100 RT luxury tourer, a three-way catalystis so named because it controlsthe three major exhaust pollutants:unburned hydrocarbons (HC),carbon monoxide (CO) and oxidesof nitrogen (NOx). This type of

catalytic converter consists of ametal-based grid coated with therare elements platinum, palladiumand rhodium, and provides betterflow characteristics than ceramic-based converters. To function properly, this type ofemission control system requiresstrict control of the air/fuel mixturevia a closed-loop or feedbacksystem. A sensor in the exhaustsystem measures the content ofoxygen in the exhaust gases, and feeds this information backto the fuel injection computer. The computer in turn adjusts thefuel/air mixture to the preciseratio required to minimizeexhaust emissions.RecyclingSince the early Nineties BMWhas placed a heavy emphasis onrecycling in its vehicles, usingrecyclable products whereverpossible. For example, the catalytic converters on all BMWmotorcycles can be recycled, and the company uses only recyclable plastics. All recyclableparts are marked as such. Furthermore, since 1993 BMWhas exclusively used plasticsmanufactured using no ozone-depleting CFCs.

Comfort & convenience

Standard toolkitBMW toolkits have long been thestandard of the industry, so muchso that long-standing aficionados

of the marque will often pilfer thekits from their old bikes beforethey sell them. The current gen-eration of motorcycles enhancesthis tradition, with everythingfrom high-quality wrenches, screwdrivers and feeler gaugesto an effective tubeless-tire repairkit. Just be sure to leave it for thenext owner.Luggage systemsHigh utility has long been a hall-mark of BMW motorcycles, andthe company has a tradition ofproviding high quality, secureluggage specifically designed foreach of its motorcycles. Today, that includes everything from theadjustable saddlebags and remov-able top case for the F 650 GSup to the permanently affixedluggage for the K 1200 LT.The removable saddlebagsdeveloped for the F 650 GS, theR Series Boxer-twins and the K 1200 RS all feature a generouscapacity – most are large enoughto easily handle a full-coveragehelmet. Their easily operated,quick-detach mounts and single-key operation provide secure, lockable storage, and all can bekeyed to the ignition switch. Theattachment design also makes itimpossible to inadvertently leavethe saddlebags unlocked whilemoving. The innovative bags for theF 650 GS offer owners the optionof lowering their capacity from 30liters to 20, with a corresponding

drop in width. And unlike manyfactory or aftermarket systems,BMW’s simple bag mounts areunobtrusive, and their clean linesdon’t detract from the bikes’appearance with the bagsremoved. The permanently affixed systemon the K 1200 LT providesunsurpassed storage, with a totalof 120 liters of packable space inits top trunk and saddlebags. Thetop trunk is specifically designedto handle two full-coverage helmets. The integrated latcheson the K-LT can be easily opened, and their positive, swing-outdesign means they can be leftunlocked for quick access on theroad. The LT’s tank-mountedstorage area provides convenientsmall-item stowage. In addition, all BMW saddlebagsystems offer optional liners tosimplify packing and unpacking onthe road. Finally, all BMW luggagesystems are aerodynamicallydesigned to have minimal effecton the bike’s handling.

Single-key lockingAll BMW lockable accessories –either standard or optional equip-ment – can be keyed to the bike’signition key to simplify lockingand unlocking accessories. Moreover, the luggage keys ondetachable saddlebags can onlybe removed in the locked position, minimizing the chance of losing abag on the road. This attention todetail reflects BMW’s long-termexperience with motorcycle touring.Anti-theft warning systemThe anti-theft warning systemprovides audible and visualwarnings. The R 1150 RS and RTand K 1200 RS and LT systemsalso offer remote control, withoptional circuitry to cut the fuelsupply even if the engine is running.12-volt accessory outletsMost BMW motorcycles includea convenient, 12-volt outletdesigned to accept a variety ofaccessories, from heated veststo halogen spotlights. A spring-loaded cover protects the outletfrom the elements.

Two years ago, when BMW gavethe original F 650 a completerethinking, the big single renderedany “entry-level” descriptioncompletely obsolete. Measuredeither by its 60,000 plus sales orby its grueling Granada-DakarRally wins, the success of the F 650 GS ensured its position asa key player in the BMW lineup. The addition of BMS electronicengine management, three-waycatalytic converter and antilockbraking put the bike on the samelevel of mechanical superiority asits larger stablemates. This yearthe bike maintains its position asthe most sophisticated single-cylinder in the world by makingantilock brakes available in bothversions, standard F 650 GS andDakar. The cylinder head of the 652ccRotax single borrows technologyfrom BMW’s 333-hp M3 six-cylinder automobiles in the designof the intake tract. Combinedwith a tucked-in exhaust system, the M-inspired intake helps bringthe output of the DOHC four-valveengine to an even 50 hp, with acorresponding boost in torque.BMS engine management combines the precision of digitalelectronic fuel-injection and ignition timing with the conve-nience and security of MoDiTeCengine diagnostics. A five-speedgearbox routes power to the rearwheel via an O-ring chain, making

this the only chain-drive motor-cycle in BMW history. The GS chassis sports first-rate,modern design without resortingto expensive materials or trendycomponentry. The F 650 offers theexpected benefits of a modernsingle – low weight, nimble handling, excellent power andsuperb brakes – and enhancesthem even further. An innovativeframe connects the steering headand swingarm pivot with deep,rectangular-section tubing, andlocates the fuel tank under thesaddle. Moving the tank to a morecentralized location guarantees alow center of gravity for the light-weight single, with a minimaleffect from a changing fuel load.Front and rear disc brakes maintain the bike’s reputation forexceptional stopping power, improved even further with theaddition of a lightweight, optionalBMW/Bosch antilock brakingsystem – still the only such systemever offered on a single-cylindermotorcycle. Distinctive stylingshows a definite familial connec-tion with BMW’s other offerings, while a choice of four colors –Deep Black, Red, Titan BlueMetallic or Mandarin – set thebike apart from its competition. For those riders who take adventure-touring to its logicallimits, the F 650 GSD Dakarmakes the 650 even more off-roadworthy. replaces the stock 19-inch rim,and a reworked suspensionboosts the front and rear travelto 8.3 inches. A tall windshield, fender extensions, standardhandguards and a thicker seatalso set the GSD apart from thestandard GS. Desert Blue/AuraWhite livery distinguishes the2002 Dakar even further. As with other BMWs, the GS andDakar sport a full complement ofBMW accessories specificallytailored to adventure-touring.These include a fitted tankbag/backpack, a 31-liter top box anda pair of saddlebags with aninnovative design that adjusts forwidth and volume. Moreover, thesuspension lowering kit givessmaller riders the opportunity toadjust the bike’s ride height totheir stature. Optional on the GSand standard on the Dakar, a1.5-inch thicker seat affords tallerriders the same form-fitting option.Heated handgrips, 12-volt acces-sory outlets, engine guards anda trip computer boost the F 650 GSto the same level of accessoriesas its larger stablemates.Coming Soon: An all-new F 650street versionRounding out the F Series lineup,an all-new variation on the F 650,the F 650 CS, represents the first pure-street version of thissophisticated single since thedemise of the F 650 ST. The similarity, however, ends there.

The CS represents a thoroughrethinking of the Rotax-powered650, beginning with a completerestyling with the emphasis onstreet and commuter use. Twinellipsoid headlamps create acompletely different face for thisrevolutionary lightweight, and itssmoothly curving bodywork ter-minates in a stylish yet practicalluggage rack that incorporatesdual passenger handholds. Therevised bodywork includes aconvenient storage area behindthe steering head, made possibleby reshaping the airbox andreplacing the conventional oil tankwith an oil-bearing frame. Thestorage design allows a choice ofinterchangeable modules designedto increase the CS’s practicalitywhile providing a completely newurban-oriented look.Part of that appearance alsoincludes the unique combinationof a single-side swingarm matedto a narrow (26 mm) drive beltinstead of the F-GS’s traditionalchain. Like the GS, the CS featuresa linkage actuated rear shock.Elegant three-spoke cast wheelsfeature the first tubeless tires ona BMW single. The BMW/Boschantilock braking system used onthe F 650 GS and Dakar is, ofcourse, optional equipment onthe F 650 CS.Although not covered in thismanual, the 2003 F 650 CS willmake its debut in early 2002.

Engine & drivetrain

Exceptional power outputwith low emissionsThe use of BMW Engine Manage-ment System (BMS) places the F 650 GS on par with its multi-cylinder siblings in terms ofsophisticated fuel delivery andignition timing, and makes the652cc DOHC engine the first single to offer a three-way catalyticconverter as standard equipment. The revised intake system andlow-restriction exhaust also helpboost the BMW/Rotax engine toan even 50 hp @ 6500 rpm, with44 lb.-ft. @ 5200 rpm, and a7500-rpm redline. That means theF 650 neatly outdoes the 85-hpR 1150 GS in specific output, putting out 77 brake horsepowerper liter. And in typical BMWfashion, the lightweight GS sportsan exceptionally broad powerband, with more than 37 lb.-ft. of torqueavailable from 3000 to 6500 rpm.DOHC four-valve cylinder headThe F 650 GS sports a pent-roof,four-valve combustion chamberwith dual overhead camshafts andbucket tappets. With shim-typevalve adjusters, these provideexceptionally accurate valve control and 6000-mile serviceintervals. Unlike the original F 650’s,the revised cylinder head featuresa single, centrally located sparkplug, capping a substantial,11.5:1, compression ratio.

Oversquare bore & strokeIn addition to the engine’sDOHC, multivalve design, itsoversquare (100mm x 83mm)bore and stroke provide goodrpm potential, excellent breathingand low piston speeds forsuperb durability.Dry-sump lubricationBMW’s experience with the origi-nal F 650’s dry-sump lubricationconvinced its engineers to retainthis design in the second-generation engine, making it theonly BMW so equipped. The F 650 GS carries its oil in an aluminum tank near the top frametube, where it can be easilychecked via a sight glass on theleft side, near the steering head.Low noise & vibrationLow-friction plain bearings, likethose in the R and K Seriesengines, not only provide higherdurability and longer engine life, but also reduce internal mechanicalnoise. The camshaft cover alsoutilizes decoupling technology tofurther reduce noise and vibra-tion, with two-piece lip seals andtwo-piece locating bolts muchlike the covers on the Boxers.Chain-driven camshaftFor increased durability and simplicity, the F Series enginespins its dual overhead camshaftsvia a bushed roller chain drivendirectly off the crankshaft, elimi-nating the need for an additional

A pair ofdense-plastic (polyamide) guiderails and a hydraulic tensionermaintain chain tension.BMW Engine ManagementSystemBMW’s Engine ManagementSystem (BMS) offers the samekind of precise fuel delivery anddigitally controlled ignition systemas BMW’s K and R Series motor-cycles. The engine breathesthrough a single, 43 mm down-draft throttle body housing a pairof injectors. A large-volume airboxsits under the GS’s faux fuel tank, and is fed via vents in the side ofthis “tank.” Borrowing from BMW’sstellar M3 six-cylinder automobileengines, the intake system placesthe injectors close to the throttlebutterfly to improve fuel atomiza-tion for instantaneous throttleresponse. The precise fuel delivery eliminatesany need for a choke lever, andalso allows the F 650 to use athree-way, closed-loop catalyticconverter – a first for a single-cylinder motorcycle – instead ofthe previous two-way open-loopdesign. An oxygen sensor in theexhaust system provides infor-mation on fuel mixture to thecentral processing unit, whichadjusts the mixture to reducenitrous oxide, hydrocarbon andcarbon monoxide emissions.

Low-restriction exhaustA stainless-steel twin-mufflerexhaust system houses thethree-way catalytic converter justupstream of the left-hand muffler.A heated oxygen sensor in thedownswept exhaust header provides the feedback for theclosed-loop catalyst. The low-restriction silencers under theGS’s seat tuck in much closerthan the previous single muffler, reducing the rear width of the F 650 by nearly five inches compared to the original. Thecompact exhaust also allows theuse of symmetrical saddlebags.Five-speed gearboxThe five-speed transmission onthe F Series is identical to theoriginal F 650’s. A stronger clutchwith an additional pair of driveand driven plates handles theuprated torque and horsepowerof this later engine.High-capacity alternatorTo handle the higher demands ofthe BMS engine managementand optional antilock brakes, theF Series features a high-capacityalternator. Its 400-watt capacityis higher than that of some touringbikes.Chain final driveBMW retained the Rotax-designedchain final drive to match thedrive system to the price posi-tioning, weight and power of theF 650 GS. This makes it the onlychain-driven BMW.

Chassis & suspension

Square-tube, steel-bridgeframeThe F 650 GS frame consists ofa pair of widely spaced, square-section steel tubes welded tospecial steel stampings at thesteering head and swingarmpivot. Deeper box-section framerails provide an even strongerconnection between the swingarmpivot and steering head than theoriginal F 650 frame, and anadditional crossbrace below thesteering head strengthens it evenfurther. A bolt-on rear sectionsupports the seat and exhaust, and another bolt-on subframe atthe front cradles the engine.Underseat fuel tankThe downdraft intake design andthe BMS fuel-injection systemallowed BMW engineers to placethe F Series fuel tank under theseat. This location not only lowersthe bike’s center of gravity, but itcentralizes the weight of the fuelload so that it has less effect onthe GS’s handling as the loadchanges. The 4.6-gallon injection-molded fuel tank also forms theGS’s sidecovers, its matte-finishedtexture perfectly complementingthe bike’s painted parts. Theside-mounted fuel filler not onlyprovides a visual reminder of thebike’s unique layout, but alsosimplifies refueling, even with atankbag in place.

Engine as a stressed memberLike the current Boxers, theengine serves as a structuralpart of the frame. This stressed-member design increases framestrength significantly withoutincreasing overall weight.Telescopic forkThe F 650 GS sports a conven-tional telescopic fork with a gen-erous 6.49 inches (8.27 incheson the Dakar) of wheel travel androbust, 41mm stanchion tubesto resist flex. In this class, a tele-scopic fork not only provides anexcellent compromise betweenstrength, weight and overall cost, but its spring and damping ratesare easily tuned for a smooth ridewith accurate, responsive wheelcontrol. To strengthen the forkeven more, the GS adds a bracebetween the fork sliders.Single-shock rear suspensionThe F 650 GS’s rear suspensionsports an extruded-aluminum,box-section swingarm, with asingle shock operating through alever-type linkage at the bottom. As with the front, rear suspensiontravel is 6.69 inches, or 8.27inches on the Dakar.Adjustable preload & dampingA hydraulic screw-type adjusterprovides infinite preload adjust-ment at the rear. The shockallows 40-position adjustablerebound damping.

Front and rear disc brakesLike its R 1150 GS sibling, the F 650 features Brembo calipers, front and rear. At the front, a twin-piston floating caliper grips an11.8-inch diameter fixed rotor. Asingle-piston caliper squeezes afixed, 9.45-inch diameter rear disc.Optional antilockThe F 650 remains the only single-cylinder bike in motorcycling history to offer antilock brakes, which makes BMW the onlymotorcycle maker in the world tooffer this technology over its entiremodel lineup. Unlike the systemsfound on the multi-cylinder BMWs,the BMW/Bosch ABS controlsbrake pressure via valving thatbleeds off excess pressure when-ever the front or rear wheel sensorsdetect impending wheel lock.Significantly lighter – 4.5 poundsoverall – and less costly than pre-vious versions, the F Series systembrings the benefits of antilockbraking to the lightweight classfor the first time. As with the R 1150 GS, the F 650 GS includesa switch to deactivate the ABSduring off-road use, where theantilock feature could be inap-propriate. New for 2002, the F 650 GSD Dakar also offers thissuperb system as an option.Alloy wheel rimsLightweight spoked wheels withalloy rims roll on enduro-orientedknobby tires for extraordinary gripon or off road. The Dakar modelsubstitutes a 21-inch front rim for

the standard GS’s 19-inch to giveit better bump-response andimproved handling off-road.Exceptional load ratingThe low 423-pound wet weightand an 838-pound maximumload rating give the F 650 a loadcapacity over 400 pounds. Thismeans that, unlike the typicallightweight, the F 650 GS caneasily handle long-distance touring or two-up riding.

Styling & aerodynamics

The F 650 GS presents a uniqueappearance yet maintains thelightweight, stylish look of theoriginal. A low seat height andsharp incline to the faux fuel tankcreates the impression of sitting“in” rather than “on” the F 650 GS,and the swingarm-mounted rearfender extension also gives continuity to the F 650 look. Thesharply jutting front fender, forward-set instrument panel andstandard rear parcel rack link thelightweight single to its Boxer-twinGS stablemate, while the scallopedvents on the “gas tank” and theirinset BMW roundels evoke thelook of the K 1200 RS and LT.In classic BMW fashion, however, the styling highlights, rather thancompromises, the bike’s practi-cality. The smoothly shapedbodywork keeps wind buffetingto a minimum, and the forwardset instrument pod and trun-cated wind deflector produce aneffective wind break. Dual under-

seat mufflers create a visual connection to the R 1100 S, butalso produce a much narrowerrear view and allow the use ofsymmetrical saddlebags. Andthe side-mounted fuel filler notonly emphasizes the GS’s uniquecentral fuel tank but simplifiesrefueling, even with the bike onits sidestand or with a tankbag inplace.Effective fairingThe F 650’s smooth bodyworkand shielded instrument poddirect the airflow around therider, maximizing protection andminimizing buffeting even atlower speeds.Wide handlebarThe wide, braced handlebar notonly provides better leverage off-road but makes the F 650 GSa snap to ride in town. The addi-tional leverage also keeps thebike nimble even with saddlebagsor a top trunk in place, or whencarrying a passenger. As with itsstablemates, the 650’s handlebaris drilled for optional heatedhandgrips.Functional mirrorsAlthough the typical 600-classsportbike offers an excellent viewof the rider’s elbows, the F 650’shandlebar-mounted mirrors provide a clear, unobstructedwide-angle view to the rear.Convenient handlebar controlsHandlebar controls feature large,color-coded buttons and switchesfor easy use even with heavy

gloves. High/low beam, horn andpush-to-cancel turnsignals aregrouped on the left, with thestarter and kill switch on the right.Integrated luggage rackIn addition to its roomy two-passenger seat, the F 650 GSsports a sturdy, integrated rearluggage rack with prominenthandholds for a passenger. Alockable cover hides a smallstorage space under the rack.Full instrumentationThe F 650 GS includes an asymmetrical tachometer andspeedometer flanking the usualassortment of warning lights, andABS models include a warninglamp to remind the rider whenthe system is deactivated. Thecompact electronic instrumentsinclude a standard digital clockas well as a digital odometer thattoggles between overall and tripmileage.Underseat toolkitThe F 650’s underseat area provides lockable storage for thestandard toolkit and vehicle documents.Alternative suspensionA number of F 650 GS modelswill come standard with the previously available suspensionlowering kit, which consists of amodified swingarm and shockstop, as well as shortened centerand sidestands. Thus equipped, the F 650’s seat height dropsfrom 30.7 to 29.5 inches. Unlikethe adjustable seats on the larger

Thicker saddleRiders looking for a bit morelong-distance comfort can optfor a thicker saddle that raisesthe GS’s seat height 1.5 inches. The thicker seat not only providesadditional padding but increaseslegroom for taller riders. This seatis standard equipment on the F 650 GS Dakar.Heated handgripsBMW’s heated handgrips providewelcome relief for cold fingers. The F 650’s pre-drilled handlebarsimplifies their mounting, while thestandard high/low switch mountsneatly into the dash panel.Adjustable saddlebagsA unique design for the F 650 GSsaddlebags allows owners toadjust their capacity to either 20or 30 liters, with a correspondingincrease or decrease in overallwidth. Optional liners offer thesame variable capacity as thehard bags. As with the largerbikes, the F 650’s bags can bekeyed to the bike’s ignition forsingle-key operation.Top CaseIn addition to the optional saddle-bags, the F 650 offers a 31-litertop case – large enough to swallow a full-coverage helmet.

The top case locks securely tothe bike’s standard luggage rack.Like the saddlebags, the top casecan be keyed to the bike’s ignitionfor single-key operation.TankbagThe F 650’s expandable tankbagoffers a maximum of 31 literscapacity, and includes a clear mappocket for on-road convenience.Trip computerThe F 650 GS offers an optionaltrip computer that tracks suchvariables as fuel consumption, elapsed time and distance. Asimple clip-on handlebar mount-ing means the computer can beremoved and used as an alarmclock while on the road.Engine-protection barsTo protect against a minor tipover, these case savers can preventexpensive damage to the enginecases.Accessory outletThe 12-volt accessory outletprovides a handy hookup for anelectric vest, halogen spotlight, battery charger or other accessories.Taller windscreenA taller, clear plastic windscreenreplaces the small silver deflectorto provide additional wind protec-tion for taller riders, or for thosewho prefer to stand while riding offroad. In 1923, when Max Friz introducedthe BMW opposed-twin engineto a fledgling motorcycling world,he likely didn’t see its offspringlasting into the next millennium.Yet as motorcyclists – and motor-cycles – have become consider-ably more sophisticated since the1923 R32, the Boxer’s basicadvantages – perfect primarybalance, a low center of gravity, ease of service and excellentengine cooling – remain just asvalid today as they were almosteighty years ago.The current R Series bikesenhance those inherent advan-tages with the most sophisticatedtechnology available on two wheels.Antilock brakes, electronic enginemanagement, chill-cast frames, aerodynamic bodywork, three-waycatalytic converters, adjustableergonomics and the superbTelelever and Paralever suspen-sion systems make these notmerely the most advanced Boxersin BMW history, but the mostadvanced twins in the world. Allof which explains why BMW hasremained loyal to the concept, and now offers the widest arrayof Boxer twins in its history. As the original R259 Boxer, the1993 R 1100 RS not only set newstandards for the sport-touringclass, it showed the world the

direction BMW would take intothe next millennium. “BMW hascompletely rethought the basicmotorcycle, and all its answersare the correct ones,” noted CycleWorld’s 1994 Buyer’s Guide. Itseight-valve, fuel-injected engine,Telelever front suspension, cast-alloy frame, adjustable ergonomicsand optional ABS II vaulted BMWback into the forefront of technicalinnovation. The RS took Bike of the Yearhonors from Automundo, CycleCanada, Rider and Motorcyclistmagazines, and was named“Best Open Class Streetbike” byCycle Canada, Motorcyclist andCycle World. More important, however, was the fact that the R 1100 RS worked – not merelybetter than its predecessor, butbetter than any other sport-touring motorcycle. That bikewas the forerunner of the currentlineup, which expanded to includethe sporting R 1100 S and R 1200 C cruiser, and entered its second generation with the R 1150 GS and new-for-2002 R 1150 R, RS and RT.The latest version of BMW’s“standard” replaces the original1100 Roadster, but the R 1150 Ris a Roadster with an edge. Thenew “naked” R 1150 R providesa far more sporting platform than

the previous R 1100 R, while italso highlights the new EVOlutionbrakes and optional IntegralABS. As in the past, the R-GSforms the basis for the R-R,beginning with its Boxer-twin.Combining the cylinders and pis-tons from the R 1200 C with theoriginal R259 70.5 mm strokebrought the displacement to thecurrent 1130 cc. Alterations tothe exhaust and intake provideda significant boost to the bike’smidrange while bringing peakpower from 80 to 85 hp. Sleekerstyling with all-new bodywork,five-double-spoke wheels and arevised Telelever showcase theRoadster’s more potent twin, with its six-speed gearbox as theperfect complement. Appropriately, this new Roadster offers a moreexciting palette of colors, includingNight Black, Atlanta Blue andRed Metallic. Many of those changes alsoappear on the R 1150 RT, whichalso enters its second generationfor 2002. The RT features thesame basic 1130 cc R259 Boxer-twin as the Roadster and GS, inthis case boosted to 95 hp courtesy of its low-rise exhaust, higher compression and camshaftsborrowed from the R 1100 S. Thestandard six-speed transmissionlowers noise and vibration at

freeway speeds while offeringincreased fuel economy. The Salso donates its wheels for afashionable restyling that includesa new upper fairing with a pair ofstandard foglights flanking alarger headlamp. “In addition totouring convenience features andwind protection, the RT’s fortecontinues to be handling, partic-ularly so with the new R 1150 RT,”says Rider magazine. Colors for2002 include Titanium SilverMetallic, Dark Blue Metallic, AquaMint Metallic and Red Metallic.BMW’s new EVO brakes alsograce the RT’s chassis, this timewith Integral ABS with fully integrated actuation.Joining the R 1150 RT in the tour-ing lineup for 2002 is a completelyrevised version of BMW’s mile-stone sport-touring Boxer, boastingmany of the same features as itsfull-dress sibling. The same 95-hp/six-speed drivetrain powers theR 1150 RS, surrounded by aslightly sportier, sleeker fairing.Standard equipment includes afull fairing with reshaped uppersection, heated handgrips and thesame fully adjustable ergonomicpackage as the original R259sport-tourer. or a striking Darkblue/FrostblueMetallic two-tone, the R 1150 RSstill sits at the pinnacle of the classdefined by the original R 100 RS.The initial example of this secondgeneration, the R 1150 GS,returns as the definitive big-boreadventure-tourer for 2002. A long-travel version of the R 1100 S’sLight Telelever pairs with the traditional Paralever to provide asupple ride on or off pavement. Its six-speed transmission and85-horsepower twin likewise givethe GS rider the perfect powerdelivery and gear selection foralmost any condition, from slog-ging down a rutted jeep trail tocruising the Interstate. A strikingpair of asymmetrical headlampsand purposeful styling distinguishesthis definitive adventure-tourerfrom anything else on road – or off.For 2002, Alpine White and aPacific Blue/Alpine White combi-nation join the previous choice ofNight Black, Mandarin or TitanSilver Metallic. “If you’re lookingfor a bike that can open up a wholenew world of destinations, grab aGS, pack your sense of adventureand hit the road – paved or not,”says Cycle World magazine.Available later in the year as alimited edition model is the radicalR 1150 GS Adventure, whichincludes several significant chassismodifications as well as a host ofoff-road oriented equipment.Evolution brakes and longer-travelsuspension components headlinethe chassis changes, while a

7.9-gallon fuel tank, luggagerack, large-capacity saddlebagsand top case lengthen the GS’salready long-distance legs. Otherchanges include solo saddle with 35.4-inch seat height, enlarged engine protection bars, revised handlebar, steel brakelines, new side covers and standard fog lights. For those who confine their ridingto the tarmac the R 1100 S offersan important change for 2002,as the partially integrated versionof BMW’s new Integral ABSheadlines the list of standardequipment on this year’s R 1100 S.BMW’s sporting Boxer still boaststhe most powerful twin in thecompany’s history – 98 horse-power – routed through a six-speedtransmission. The new lighterweight EVO brake system teamswith other lightweight componentssuch as magnesium valve covers,five-spoke wheels and LightTelelever to pare its weight downto 487 pounds. All this plusadjustable rebound dampingfront and rear and its throaty, underseat exhaust make this thehighest-performance, most exhilarating Boxer-twin yet. “Fewmachines can match this Boxer’sall-around sporting and road-eating capabilities,” says CycleWorld (October ‘98). In 1998, in a departure from therest of the line-up, BMW intro-duced the R 1200 C. At the time, its unique blend of Americancustom and German functionquickly made it BMW’s best-selling Boxer. With its flat-twinboosted to 1170 cc and retunedfor a solid mid-range punch, the1200 C offers immediate gratifi-cation at the flick of a wrist. Mixingtraditional chrome and polishcustom appeal with BMW’sexclusive Telelever suspension,fuel-injection and antilock brakes, the R 1200 C underscores thedifference between trendy andtrendsetting. “While most buyerswill be drawn to the bike for itsstyling.... It represents a largeadvance from the current stateof cruiser technology,” saysMotorcycle Cruiser (December‘97). In keeping with its customstatus, the R 1200 C offers abroad array of colors this year, with standard colors Night Black,Ivory, Tarten Green Metallic andFlashstone joined by Toscana-green and Pacific Blue.

Joining the standard R 1200 Cthis year are three variations: theMontana, Euro and Phoenix. Thetouring-oriented R 1200 CMMontana includes a windshield, black saddlebags, heated hand-grips, large passenger pillion andengine guards, with an expandedchoice of Night Black, Ivory, TartenGreen Metallic or Flashstone joining last year’s Pacific Blue. TheR 1200 CE Euro features graphiteand black chassis highlights, lower handlebar, sport fairing orwindshield, high-intensity roadlights, heated handgrips and achoice of either Dust Metallic orIce Blue Metallic. With a morebare-bones appeal, the R 1200 CPPhoenix flips the Euro’s Graphitanfinish into chrome, adds a solosaddle, three-spoke cast wheelsand a tinted Speedster windshield, then wraps it all in a striking two-tone combination of eitherIvory/Peach or Mandarin/Graphite.

Engine & DrivetrainThe original R259 Boxer-twinengine is a tribute to getting itright the first time, with only minorchanges since its 1993 introduc-tion with the R 1100 RS. The current twin combines elementsof the previous Boxer engineswith many features of the 16-valve,DOHC K Series engine. Unlikethe single-cam, overhead-valveBoxer, the R259 engine usesBMW’s “High-Cam” concept, asingle chain-driven camshaft ineach head operating four valvesper cylinder via short pushrodsand rocker arms. Bosch MotronicMA 2.4 engine managementhandles fuel delivery and ignitiontiming, and a three-way catalyticconverter cleans the exhaust.Since the original 1085 cc twin,BMW has developed numerousvariants on this basic eight-valveR259 engine. A bored-and-stroked,1170 cc version arrived in 1997with the R 1200 C. Tuned pri-marily for low-end torque, this61-horsepower version offers astump-pulling 72 lb.-ft. @ 3000rpm. “The engine serves up low-speed power by the bucket-load,” says Motorcycle Cruiser(December 1997). It’s backed bya wide-ratio five-speed transmis-sion, with an extra-low first gearfor excellent around-town accel-eration and an overdrive fifthgear for a relaxed highway ride.

The second revision of the eight-valve Boxer twin appearedin 1998, in the sporty R 1100 S.While it uses the same 1085 ccdisplacement as the original R 1100 RS, its output has beenboosted to a high-winding 98 hp– more than any other BMW pro-duction twin. Lightened, 11.3:1high-compression pistons,forged-steel connecting rods, an8400-rpm redline, revisedMotronic engine managementand a low-restriction underseatexhaust account for most of thechanges. The S’s sporting orienta-tion means it gets the K 1200 RSclose-ratio six-speed transmission, with both fifth and sixth as over-drives. “The latest S proves, forthe first time in a quarter-century,that a BMW can be a sportbikewithout giving up all the thingsthat make it a BMW in the firstplace,” says Motorcyclist magazine(December ‘98).Variation number three arrivedtwo years ago, in the form of theR 1150 GS. Combining featuresof its two latest predecessors, the GS uses the 101 mm bore ofthe R 1200 C and the six-speedtransmission from the R 1100 S.The resulting 1130 cc twin pro-duces a significantly improvedmidrange and a boost to 85horsepower @ 6750 rpm. More-over, the six-speed provides itsriders with a broader range of

gear choices to complement theR 1150 GS’s wide-rangingadventure-touring capabilities. This 85-hp engine forms thebasis for this year’s R 1150 R.Retuned with the R 1100 S’scamshafts and higher compres-sion, this engine spins out ahealthy 95 horsepower @ 7250rpm in the 2002 R 1150 RT.Simplified maintenanceThe R259 Boxers enhance BMW’sreputation for owner-orientedmaintenance through a numberof features. Complementing thetraditional screw-and-locknut valveadjustment and no-maintenanceair-cooling, Motronic enginemanagement virtually eliminatestraditional tune-ups. An easilyaccessed underseat air filter,spin-on oil filter and an oil-levelsightglass make this engine evensimpler to maintain than the previous-generation Boxers.Bosch MotronicCurrent twins all feature BoschMotronic MA 2.4. The R 1200 Cand R 1150 models use the identical Motronic system as theK Series engines, while the R 1100 S uses a modified versionwith a manual choke. All bikesfeature connectors for the MoDiTeCdiagnostic system. The Motronicand MoDiTeC systems aredescribed on page 11 and 12.

High-output charging systemTo accommodate any electricalaccessories their owners may fit,all R259 Boxers feature a high-output, 700-watt charging system. The electrical systemsalso feature a low-maintenancebattery as standard. Driven by apoly V-belt, the alternator runs ata 1.5:1 ratio, so it is chargingpositive even at idle.

Chassis & Suspension

Stressed-member framedesignAll Boxer-twins use the engine asa stressed member, meaning thecrankcase makes up an integralpart of the frame. A small aluminumsubframe forms the upper mountfor the Telelever front end, andthe control arm pivots off theengine crankcase. This stressed-member frame design producesan extremely strong, flex-freechassis. On the original R259models, the Paralever swingarmbolted directly to the transmission, but beginning with the R 1200 Cand R 1100 S the new modelsmount the swingarm to cast lugson the aluminum subframe. Theseframes also feature a 16 mmshorter rear Paralever.

Adjustable spring preloadAll the Boxer-twins offer easilyadjusted rear spring preload toaccommodate different loads, asdescribed fully on page 16. Tohandle the demands of off-roadriding, the GS also provides five-position adjustable springpreload for the front Telelever.Adjustable rebound dampingWith the exception of the R 1200 C, all the Boxer twinsoffer adjustable rebound dampingon the rear shock, as describedon page 16. Rebound dampingon the front shock can also bealtered on the R 1100 S and R 1150 R, as described on page17.Triple disc brakesAs described on pages 20 and21, multi-piston, triple discbrakes provide excellent stop-ping on all the R259 Boxers.Unlike a number of competitors, the R 1200 C offers dual front

R 1200 C

Engine & Drivetrain

The R 1200 C features a thoroughlyrevised version of the R259Boxer-twin, with an increase inboth bore and stroke bringing itto 1170 cc – the largest flat-twinin BMW history. Tuned specificallyfor low-end torque, it featuressmaller valves, intake ports andinjection butterflies to boost powerat low rpm. The R 1200 C engineproduces 61 horsepower at5000 rpm, with an impressive 72lb.-ft. of torque at only 3000 rpm.Motronic MA 2.4 engine managementAs described on page 11.Dual exhaustThe R 1200 C exhales through apair of short, slash-cut mufflersthat produce a throaty – but legal– growl at any rpm. The exhaustsystem is done in stainless-steel,finished with polished chrome.Double-wall construction protectsthe system from heat discoloration. An under-engine resonatorhouses the standard three-waycatalytic converter.

Dual oil-coolersThe R 1200 C features a pair ofsmall oil-coolers, hidden withinthe frame casting ahead of thefuel tank. Air passes throughthem and exits through ductsabove the cylinders. The coolersare thermostatically controlled.Wide-ratio transmissionAs described on page 12, the R 1200 C features a wide-ratiofive-speed transmission, combin-ing the first four ratios of the newsix-speed for outstanding accel-eration with an overdrive fifthgear for easy highway cruising.Hydraulic clutchAs described on page 10.

Chassis & Suspension

Revised frameAlthough it uses the engine as astressed member, the R 1200 Cfeatures a completely revisedframe for reasons of function andstyle. Unlike its R259 Boxer stablemates, the R 1200 C’s die-cast front subframe plays astarring role in the bike’s styling, finished in pearl-gloss chrome orGraphitan. At the rear, an incon-spicuous tubular-steel subframeprovides the pivot for the Monoleversuspension and support for thefender, seat and tail-section.

Raked TeleleverTo provide the relaxed ridingstyle and straight-line stabilityexpected with this bike, thesteering angle of the R 1200 C’sTelelever has been increased to29.5 degrees instead of the typical Boxer’s 27.2.Monolever rear suspensionAs described on page 15, theclassic, simple styling of BMW’soriginal Monolever makes it aperfect fit for the R 1200 C.Long wheelbaseThe additional length of the R 1200’s Monolever swingarmand the reworked Telelever produce a 65-inch wheelbase, 7 inches more than the R 1100 R’s.The added length gives the R 1200 C superb straight-linestability and relaxed steeringresponse.Standard ABS IIAs it was at its introduction, theR 1200 C remains the only bikein its class to offer antilockbrakes. Standard equipment onthe 1200, ABS II is describedfully on page 20.Cross Spoke wheelsUnlike its wire-spoked competitors, the R 1200 C’s Cross Spokewheels allow the use of tubelesstires, as described on page 17.The C-model rolls on H-ratedtubeless tires with a 110/80-18front and a massive, 170/80-15at the rear.

Styling & Ergonomics

Exposed TeleleverWith the possible exception of itsflat-twin engine, nothing differen-tiates BMW’s R 1200 C from thecompetition more than the bike’sunique Telelever front suspension.Consequently, BMW stylistsensured it plays a key role in thebike’s front-end styling. With pol-ished fork tubes, chrome springand damper and a pearl-chromefinish on the control arm, the R 1200’s Telelever gives the bikeits unmistakable profile. On Euromodels, the Telelever and forksliders are finished in a long-lasting, Graphitan finish.Chrome & polished highlightsFrom its hand-pinstriped frontfender to its teardrop taillamp, the R 1200 C sports morebrightwork than any previousBMW. The bike sparkles withchrome headlamp, instruments, valve and side covers, springs, footpegs, turnsignals and taillamp. In addition to its polished Telelever, polished aluminum accents theCross Spoke wheel rims, lacedwith chromed stainless-steelspokes. When BMW introduced the originalK 100 in 1983, some feared itspelled the end of the Boxer twins.Instead, the four-cylinder K-bikesopened a whole new avenue forBMW enthusiasts, satisfying riderswho couldn’t resist the velvetsurge of power from a finelytuned inline-four.Since then, these unique horizontal/longitudinal fours have often beenthe leading edge for BMW motor-cycle technology. The impressivecredentials of the fuel-injected KSeries include motorcycling’s firstthree-way catalytic converter, andthe first two-wheel adaptation ofantilock brakes.Appropriately enough, when BMWreplaced its single-cam Boxerswith the all-new R259 twins, thecompany drew heavily from theK-bikes for much of the Boxers’newfound sophistication. Thecurrent K Series reverse that situation, borrowing extensivelyfrom their twin-cylinder siblingsfor much of their design. The K-RS’s chassis includes theBoxers’ highly acclaimed Teleleverfront suspension, while its chill-castaluminum frame – a process alsoborrowed from the Boxers – features vibration-quelling rubberengine mounts. The four-cylinder

RS also boasts a stunning 130horsepower, making it the firstBMW motorcycle to top 100 hpin production trim. The smooth, seamless rush of the RS’s 1171 ccengine reconfirms the bike’s reputation as a superb long-distance mount, a statementconfirmed by its choice as Ridermagazine’s Top Sport-TouringBike for 2001, four years after theoriginal’s introduction. The partially integrated version ofBMW’s superlative Integral ABSheadlines a host of improvementsfor the K 1200 RS. New for 2002,a revised upper fairing incorpo-rates asymmetrical openings forthe radiator and air intakes aswell as a larger windshield andreshaped turn signals that shuntair more effectively around therider. A fully finished instrumentsurround caps off the bike’s visualimprovements, while new mirrorsprovide the pilot with improvedvision of his own. Standard sportsuspension features firmer springand damping rates, and movethe RS slightly closer to the “sport”end of the sport-touring spectrum.New comfort enhancementsinclude repositioned footpegs forrider and passenger and electroniccruise control.

Of course, the RS’s luxury-touringstablemate needs little in the wayof enhanced comfort. A full stepup from previous BMW luxurytourers, the K 1200 LT stands asa benchmark in its class, garner-ing such accolades as Ridermagazine’s 1999 Bike of the Yearand Cycle World’s 1999 BestTouring Bike its first year. In addition to its 100-hp engine,120-liter luggage capacity andslippery, full-coverage fairing, theK 1200 LT offers a choice of threetrim levels for 2002: Standard,Custom and Elite. The LTS Stan-dard stretches the description of“base model” with cruise control, electric reversing assist, heatedhandgrips, AM/FM/WB-compactdisc stereo with four-speakersplus rider and passenger controls, and an electrically adjustablewindshield. The LTC Customincludes all this plus heated seats,6-disc CD changer, trip computer, top box rack and Custom chromepackage. Newly available thisyear is an even more luxurious

variant, the K 1200 LTE Elite.Based on the LT Custom, thisnew model adds a healthy dollopof optional extras, including Comsystem with push-to-talk for riderand passenger, CB radio andantenna kit plus saddlebag andtop case soft liners. The Elite alsofeatures the BMW Navigator, making the LTE the first motor-cycle in the world to include anavigation system as standardequipment. And in keeping withthe bike’s leading-edge specifi-cation, this year also sees theaddition of BMW’s fully integratedIntegral braking system as stan-dard equipment on both LT’s.In any guise, BMW’s luxury tourertakes its place alongside thecompany’s 7 Series sedans asthe most luxurious high-speedtransports on two or four wheels.“Anyone with seat time in arecent-vintage BMW sedan willrecognize the LT’s mythical blendof chassis control and compliance,”says Motorcyclist magazine.

Engine & Drivetrain

The K 1200 engine maintains thehorizontal/longitudinal inline-fourarchitecture of the original K 100,but myriad updates have keptthis engine at the leading edge oftouring designs. Its basic advan-tages – low cg, compact dimen-sions, excellent accessibility andlayout designed for shaft drive –make this one of the finest large-bore motorcycle powerplantsavailable. The original 1983’s DOHC cylinderhead, all-aluminum construction, linerless nickel-silicon-coatedcylinder bores and electronicengine management meant theK 100 lacked nothing in sophistica-tion. The later K 1100 RS and LTboosted the four’s displacementand broadened its powerbandeven further through an increasein stroke and the addition of four-valve combustion chambers. In its current 1171cc iteration,BMW’s largest-displacementengine features a 16-valve headwith dual overhead camshaftsoperating lightweight valves viabucket tappets with shim adjusters. These provide exceptionallyaccurate valve control and12,000-mile maintenance intervals.Other high-quality internals –chain-driven camshafts, light-weight valvetrain, a forged crank-shaft, pistons and connectingrods – mean the K 1200 enginealso promises excellent longevity.

The RS and LT engines differ primarily in detail, with the 130-hpK 1200 RS biased toward higherperformance. Internal changeson the RS include higher-lift,longer-duration camshafts andlightweight 11.5:1 pistons. Thesportier engine also breathesthrough shorter yet larger-diameter intake runners andlarger ports. Exhaust gases passthrough a low-restriction 4-into-2-into-1 exhaust with dual catalytic converters. A ram-airintake under the headlamp feedscold air to a large-volume airbox, and provides a mild superchargingeffect at high speeds. The RS’speak output – 130 hp @ 8750 rpm, with 85 lb.-ft. @ 6750 – representsa 30 percent horsepower boostover any previous K Series engine.Luxury touring places differentdemands on an engine, empha-sizing tractability and response. The LT’s smaller-diameter intakeports and longer runners boostmidrange torque, and reworkedcamshafts move peak power further down the rpm range. Arevised exhaust system withequal-length header pipes feedsinto a pre-muffler with a singlethree-way catalytic converter. As a result, the K 1200 LT boastsa broader powerband, with morethan 85 percent of its maximumtorque (85 lb.-ft.) available from2800 to 6800 rpm. The LT’speak horsepower – 100 hp @6750 rpm – also makes it one of

the most-powerful luxury-tourerson the market, but this is anengine designed to provideinstantaneous response at thetwist of a wrist.Motronic MA 2.4Using the different tuning for theRS and LT engines, the DigitalMotor Electronics system providesoptimal fuel delivery and ignitionfor any situation. For a fulldescription, see page 11.MoDiTeC diagnosticsBoth the K 1200 RS and LT includeMoDiTeC diagnostic connectors, described on page 12.Dual radiatorsA pair of radiators (one per side)and a thermostatically controlledoil-cooler easily manage to coolthe liquid-cooled four-cylinderand keep heat away from theunderseat area. Two auxiliaryelectric fans (also thermostaticallycontrolled) aid radiator airflow atlow speed. Openings in the RSand LT fairings direct heated airaway from the rider, so the cockpitstays cool even in heavy traffic.Six-speed gearboxThe K 1200 RS routes its 130horsepower through a six-speedtransmission – fully described onpage 12. The close-ratio spacingproduces exceptionally smoothshifting, and ensures the K 1200RS never leaves its pilot wishingfor the correct gear.

Five-speed plus reverseAs on the K-RS’s six-speed, theLT’s five-speed transmission features the same type of narrow-face gears for reducednoise, low maintenance andsmoother shifting. An overdrivefifth gear keeps the engine rpmlow even at highway speeds –less than 3000 rpm at 60 mph. Moreover, the LT offers the convenience of an electricallyassisted reverse gear, whichoperates off the starter motoronce neutral is engaged. Thereverse feature makes parkingeasier, and makes maneuveringthe LT in and out of tight situationsa breeze.

Chassis & suspension

Cast-aluminum frameThe K 1200 frame consists offour precision chill-cast aluminumparts, welded together to form asingle, high-strength piece. Thewidth and thickness of each piecevaries to absorb the stressespassing through the K-bikes’chassis, and the larger piecesfeature an internal honeycomb toincrease strength even further. Atubular steel subframe at the backprovides support for the seat andrear bodywork on both bikes.Rubber engine mountsThe K Series BMWs both featurevibration-absorbing rubber enginemounts, effectively isolating therider from driveline vibration.

Frame-mounted TeleleverUnlike the truncated frame onthe R259 Boxers, the full frameon the K Series provides thepivot for the front Telelever.Rather than an A-shaped lever arm,the K series use a rectangularpiece that bolts onto the frameabove the engine. Functionally, thesystem is the same as describedon pages 13 and 14.Inherent anti-diveThe K Series Telelever is designedto counter 90 percent of brakedive, so both the K 1200 RS andLT maintain most of their suspen-sion travel even during hardbraking. This makes it particularlyadaptable to BMW’s newestEVOlution braking system andIntegral ABS.The Telelever’s anti-dive gives theLT in particular a unique advantageover other heavyweight tourers, which typically generate significantdive due to weight transfer duringbraking. The LT’s Telelever meansBMW engineers can design itsspring and damping rates forexceptional ride and handling,

rather than to counteract brakedive. Motorcyclist (May ‘99) notedthat maximum braking created“none of the brake-induced,kneeling elephant behavior thatmakes hard stops disconcertingon other luxury liners.”Steering damperA dual-rate hydraulic steeringdamper minimizes kickbackthrough the K-bikes’ handlebars. The damper provides little resis-tance with normal fork movements, but automatically increases itsdamping with faster inputs.Frame-mounted ParaleverThe K Series Paralever mountsdirectly to the rear of the frame, rather than to the transmissionhousing. Otherwise, the rear sus-pension functions the same asdescribed on pages 15 and 16.Standard Integral antilock Both the K 1200 RS and LTinclude BMW’s new EVOlutionbrakes with Integral ABS asstandard equipment. As thesportier of the two, the K-RSfeatures the partially integratedsystem, which operates front and

rear brakes through the handleveronly. The luxury touring LT featuresthe fully integrated system, oper-ating both front and rear brakesfrom the handlever or foot pedal.Only Honda’s new GL1800 offersABS as a $1000 option, and ofthe RS’s competitors, only Honda’sST1100 offers antilock brakes –as a $2500 option. See page 20for a full description of BMW’sIntegral ABS.EVOlution brakesThe RS and LT both featureBMW’s new EVOlution brakehardware, combining dual, 12.6-inch diameter cross-drilled rotorsand four-piston calipers on thefront. Staggered piston diametersbalance brake wear on the sinteredpads. The unique cross-drilledpattern reduces weight, providesbetter cooling and better wet-weather response than a soliddisc. Both K-bikes also use asingle 11.2-inch cross-drilled discat the rear. A twin-piston Brembocaliper grips the RS rear disc. Onthe LT, greater expected loadsjustify a four-piston caliper.

Lightweight alloy wheelsThe RS and LT roll on five-double-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels,3.50 x 17-inch front and 5.0 x17-inch rear. The double-spokedesign eliminates the separatedisc carrier to reduce weighteven further. Together with theParalever single-side swingarm, the bolt-on rear wheel also greatlysimplifies rear tire changes.Z-rated radial tiresStandard equipment on both K-bikes, Z-rated radial tires offerlow rolling resistance, excellentgrip, high-speed capability andgenerous load capacity. Bothbikes roll on a 120/70-ZR 17 fronttire, mated to a 170/60-ZR 17 rearon the RS or a 160/70-ZR 17 reartire on the LT. New this year, theRS offers an optional 17 x 5.5-inchrear wheel with a correspondinglywider, 180/55SR-17 tire.

Engine & Drivetrain

1171 cc DOHC inline-fourAs described on page 78. TheLT’s DOHC 16-valve four-cylinderdevelops a smooth, 100 horse-power – far more than most luxury touring bikes.Revised intakeLonger, smaller diameter intakerunners enhance low- andmidrange power. The LT’s intakeplenum utilizes a Helmholtz-typeresonator, much like those foundon BMW’s automotive engines. This minimizes intake resonanceto reduce noise, which meansthat even under full throttle theLT produces minimal intake roar.Single exhaust catalystUnlike the RS, the LT’s 100-hppower output (vs the K 1200 RS’130-hp) means it can effectivelyreduce emissions with only a single three-way catalyst (ratherthan the K 1200’s dual units).Overdrive transmissionThe LT’s five-speed gearboxincludes an overdrive fifth gearfor smooth, economical high-way-speed cruising – 3000 rpm@ 62 mph.Reverse assistAs described on page 79, anelectrically operated reverse simplifies parking and backingup with the LT. raises the idle speed to 1500rpm to minimize any drain on the battery.Battery charge managerBig tourers place extreme demandson their electrical systems, so inaddition to its whopping 840-wattalternator the LT’s Motronic enginemanagement system features aunique idle-speed circuit thatboosts the idle speed duringhigh electrical usage. When elec-trical demand rises at low enginerpm, the battery charge managerraises the idle speed fromapproximately 950 to 1350 rpmto maintain the battery charge.

Chassis & suspension

Outstanding load capacityFor touring riders, load capacitybecomes more than just a numberon a page; it spells the differencebetween what goes along andwhat stays behind. The K 1200 LTboasts a 489-pound load capacity– over 120 pounds more thanHarley-Davidson’s Ultra ClassicElectra Glide.Rubber engine mountsAs described on page 79, theseeffectively reduce engine vibrationso that the rider notices onlysmooth, vibration-free response.Adjustable rear shockBoth damping and spring preload adjustments tailor rearsuspension to load. The LT’s

convenient flip-up seat alsomakes accessing the hydraulicpreload adjustment a snap.Extended wheelbaseA 3.1-inch increase in the lengthof the LT’s Paralever improvesstraightline stability. The addedlength in the LT’s 64.3-inchwheelbase also translates intoimproved rider and passengerroom.Single-side swingarmBMW’s Paralever offers the additional benefit of a single-sideswingarm. Together with theeasily removed rear fender, theParalever swingarm greatly simplifies rear tire changes – anall day job with many full-dresstouring bikes such as Honda’sValkyrie Interstate or Harley-Davidson’s belt-driven TourGlide.

Styling & aerodynamics

Aerodynamic bodyworkFrom the tip of its body-coloredfront fender to the top of itsKamm-styled trunk, the LT projects an integrated, stylishform unlike any other. Its familialBMW connection is evident inthe dual-kidney openings belowthe headlamp and by the diagonalvents on the side, which evokeBMW’s classic 507 roadsterautomobile. At the rear, the distinctive full-width red taillamp

neatly disguises a pair of amberturnsignals at its outer edges. The LT’s sleek form does morethan merely provide one of themost unmistakable profiles inmotorcycling. By creating anearly turbulence-free cockpit forrider and passenger, the body-work helps ensure rider comfortand safety from horizon to horizon. The LT’s shape also aboundswith subtleties, such as the passenger handholds neatly integrated into the saddlebags,or the lockable storage compart-ment just below the fuel filler.Even the attractive, softly cush-ioned kneepads serve doubleduty by insulating the rider fromengine heat.Adjustable wind deflectorsTwo clear plastic deflectorsunder the mirrors pivot to allowfine-tuning of the airflow. In coolweather they can be set todeflect cold air away from thepassenger space, or direct acooling breeze toward the riderduring warm weather.Electrically adjustable windshieldThe LT’s height-and-angleadjustable windshield allows therider to adjust airflow at thetouch of a button, a thumb’sreach away on the left handgrip.

The shield can be set higher andmore vertical for two-up ridingwith more protection, or lowerand flatter for solo riding withless aerodynamic drag. Thisstandard windshield sweepsthrough a range of 5.4 inches.Impact protectionEasily replaced, frame-mountedbumpers at the front and rearprevent serious bodywork damage in low-speed tipovers.Specifically designed to preventthe bike from tipping over as faras its mirrors, they also protectthe saddlebags, trunk, windshieldand upper bodywork. Replaceable,tubular-steel guards underneaththe exterior further protect theLT’s engine cases and frame byhelping to absorb energy frommore serious impacts.Adjustable ergonomicsLike its siblings, the LT providesa number of ergonomic adjust-ments to accommodate ridersand passengers of all sizes. Thepilot’s saddle provides either a30.3 or 31.5-inch seat height, adjusted simply by a knob underthe flip-up seat. The raised passenger perch provides anexcellent forward view and thebackrest can be adjusted 1-inchforward or back for additionalroom.

The success of aircraft enginesand motorcycles allowed BMWto expand into automobiles in1929, beginning with the Dixi, amodestly priced, license-builtAustin sedan. Within the nextdecade, however, BMW beganbuilding its own designs, andsuch cars as the Targa Floria-winning 328 roadster firmlyestablished the products of Bayerische Motoren Werke asamong the finest performanceand luxury cars in the world. The next seven decades havepolished that reputation to itscurrent luster, as the companyproduced such legendary carsas the V8-powered 507 roadster, the 2002, the world’s first sportsedan, and the M1 coupe, thefirst car to evince the words“exotic” and “civilized” in thesame sentence. Over the pastdecade the company has movedfrom strength to strength winningaccolades and awards, including“Best Car Company” in the world.Securing its superiority with con-sistently superb model revisions, the company has branched intonew markets with such cars asthe Z3 roadster and coupe. Justas it has with BMW motorcycles, the success of BMW’s cars isreflected in their sales, havingrisen from 53,000 in 1991 to155,000 last year, making it thebest-selling luxury-import passenger car in the country.

The reason behind that successlies in the cars themselves, whichconsistently top their classes inboth performance and value. Theprevious M3 won more comparisontests and garnered more awardsthan any other car in its class, andthe new, 333-hp M3 has alreadycontinued that trend, winningcomparison tests against suchlofty – and less versatile – com-petition as Chevrolet’s CorvetteZ06, Porsche’s 911 Carrera andMercedes’ AMG C43. In 1997,Motor Trend named the new 5 Series its Import Car of the Year, and the 7 Series is widely consid-ered to be the best luxury sedanin the world. The 7 Series distin-guishes itself even further this yearas the all-new 745i and 745Li joinsthe ranks. With iDrive instrumen-tation, a six-speed automatictransmission and Valvetronic valvecontrol, the new 7 Series carstake their rightful place as themost sophisticated luxury cars inthe world.Car and Driver has placed theM3 on its 10Best list four years ina row, and named it the Best-Handling Car for More Than$30,000 in a competition againstthe likes of Chevrolet’s Corvetteand Ferrari’s F355. Since 1992,BMW’s 325i, 328i and current330i have also made Car andDriver’s 10Best, and for the pastthree years the M3 and 328ihave been joined by the current5 Series. Continuing the trend, the new M5 took top honors in a

Road & Track comparison with theJaguar XJR and Mercedes-BenzE55 AMG.The 3 Series has also madeAutomobile’s All Stars every yearsince 1994, and in 1995 the M3was named Automobile of the Year.In 1998, Automobile’s readersalso named the 540i Best SportsSedan, and its editors named the7 Series Best Large Luxury Car.The same year, the magazinewent even further as both its editors and its readers namedBMW Best Car Company.
