Superintendent Blake Cooper read a Proclamation

New A.C. Williams

School Dedicated

September 20,2009

A capacity crowd filled the new ACW cafeteria Sunday, September 20, to witness a tribute to a great man as his name was transferred to a new structure. School administrators and members of the late A. C. Williams family took part in a formal dedication for the school which opened just in time for the start of a new school year.

ACW Principal Wes Underwood welcomed the audience and thanked everyone involved in making a successful start to the school year. Superintendent Blake Cooper thanked the A. C. Williams family for their attendance and for the impact their father had on generations of Commerce students while he was an administrator for the district. Williams was credited for smoothing uneasiness in the community which led to a successful integration of black and white students in the early 1960s. Dr. Wendell Edwards, representing the Sons of the American Revolution, presented American and Texas flags to Underwood and Cooper which had flown over the national and state capitols. Callie Hearne, daughter of A. C. Williams, shared several stories that revealed the encouraging nature of her father which led many people to become teachers.

Chairman of the Citizens Committee for the bond election Wyman Williams thanked his committee members and the community for their endorsement of a new school in the successful passage of the bond. ACW students also played a large role in the dedication ceremonies. Members of Cub Scout Pack No. 26 posted the colors and fourth grader Lily Selvaggi, representing Girls Scout Troop 8809, led the pledges to the flags. A student choir, led by Angela Neal, sang America, My Country Tis of Thee, Texas Our Texas, and Simple Gifts. Former ACW Principal Julia Robinson, now Director of Curriculum, Special Programs and Grants for the district, read a poem she composed entitled, “For the Children” to close the ceremony. Visitors were invited to tour the 66,400-sq-ft facility where teachers had showcased their new technology including Promethean boards and response systems. The building has 24 regular classrooms, six resource classrooms, an art room, two computer labs, a science room, a music room, a gymnasium, a cafeteria with a stage, a kitchen, a life skills room, a media center and an administration area. The school has three classroom wings with a wing for each grade level. The school has two separate drop off areas--one for parents and another for buses. Both the bus drop off and parent drop areas have long canopies to protect students from the weather. The administration area is arranged so that visitors have to enter the office before they can enter the main facility. It was designed by Claycomb Associates, Architects and constructed by W. B. Kibler Construction Co.

Beautiful children graced the stage of the 2009 Bois ‘d Arc Bash Youth Pageant held Saturday afternoon at the First Baptist Church. The Baby Miss and Master babies began our pageant at noon. Karley Hall was selected the winner and Avery Isabell the runner up for the Baby Miss contest. Hunter Patterson was crowned our Baby Master and Aaron Thomas the runner up. Tiny Miss was quite exciting, especially to Evelyn Jones our runner up and Kinleigh Walters, the winner of the Tiny Miss class. The audience was delightfully entertained by our little darlings gasping in delight as they were awarded their trophies. The Tiny Master for 2009 was awarded to Wyatt Davidson, and runner up award goes to Gabriel Brice. After a short break for lunch, we began the afternoon awarding Michael Neel Jr as the runner up and Ian Gibson, with his striking red hair, the winner of the Wee Master boys age 2-3. Our judges chose Taytum Smith as this year’s Tiny Miss and Morgan Bowen the runner up, both girls wore their favorite color dress, what else but pink! The young ladies of the next class were stunning on stage that was adorned with flowers graciously donated by Bickham Florist making the Mini Miss class the longest for our judges because of the girls’ beautiful dresses and perfectly poised personalities! The competition of the class was tough for the Mini Miss winner Sarah Underwood and the runner up Jade Hines. The Mini Master for 2009 was awarded to Dakota Grice sporting a cowboy hat and the runner up award went to Brayden Koch. A cowgirl, Alysia McCormick is this year’s Junior Miss and Mikayla White in her beautiful blue gown was chosen as the runner up, and the last class of the day was awarded to Alaura Delcambre, our 2009 Senior Miss. Chi Omega was gracious with their time and came to judge our Bash Pageant and Mrs. Gray at Bickham Florist provided our stage with beautiful flowers. DSK Construction creatively prepared a festive photo area including a banner resembling the brightly colored Bash t-shirt and the celebrated horse apples, providing our contestant’s a place to take memorable photos. Thank you to our sponsors, volunteers, and contestants in making the Bash Youth pageant a success and an enjoyable event for the beautiful babies in Commerce!
