A REFLECTION FOR THE 21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME By Deacon Joe Twidwell “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” Have you ever worried that no matter how hard you try that you cannot get to heaven? While Jesus does not directly answer this ques- tion here, Jesus does offer us an answer and great comfort. In John 6:37-40: Jesus says: ”Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me, because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me. And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day. But being with God still requires a choice and action on our part and cannot be taken for granted. While Paul says in his letter to the Romans 8:39 that “nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord” We still must exercise our free will and choose to love God by loving each other. These choices must be made many times, each and every day and are not the easiest path. Personal responsibility is critical: responsibility to help others see the narrow gate and guide them through it, and for us to choose the narrow gate. Where is your path leading you and those you love? FR. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “For behold, some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last.” Luke 13:30 Our standards in our society are so different from God’s standards. We often rate or rank people by what they have, how powerful they are, or how successful they are. Jesus reminds us that God will not judge us by the same earthly standards.

WEEKLY PRAYER INTENTION For grace to enter through the narrow gate: that the Spirit will guide us in living with forgiveness, compassion, self-control and acts of service so that our lives may manifest the reign of God.

A Life Message…. We need to check our track on a daily basis. The parable of the locked door warns us that the time is short. Each day sees endings and opportunities missed. “Opportunity will not knock twice at your door.” Remember the old "Examination of Conscience" we were asked to make at the end of each day, in which we ask God’s pardon for the faults and sins of the day? "How conscious was I this day of God's numerous gifts? How well did I respond to the opportunities to bear witness and serve in Jesus' name: to forgive, feed, clothe, and love those who entered my life? How much did I strive today to enter through the narrow gate of sacrificial love in action?'" We might conclude this self-examination with a short prayer: “I need you Jesus Christ. Grant me forgiveness for my sins. Make me a new person. I need your Holy Spirit to direct me, to strengthen me, so that I can walk in the narrow way and choose the nar-row gate. I need you to change me from a self-centered, self-sufficient person into your wise servant.”

God offers… we respond. We have the ability to respond. The responsibility is ours, not God’s.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (RCIA)

We will begin our RCIA classes on Saturday, September 10th. The classes will be held in the parish hall Jefferson (most of the time) and will run from 9:00 – 10:30 am. I have found that four categories of people should consider attending these classes:

Those who are not baptized and want to learn about the faith and be baptized in the Catholic Church

Those who are not Catholic and are considering becoming Catholic. I have always told people that you do not have to be certain that you want to be baptized or confirmed but you want to get adequate information to make a good decision

Catholics who have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation

Adult Catholics who would like to learn/relearn the Catholic faith as an adult If you are interested give any parish office a call or just show up the first week. Some people have asked if they can come to some of the classes but not all of them because of scheduling conflicts and the answer is YES. All that God ever asks is that we do the best we can. We will publish the content of each week ahead of time. Do not make the decision on your own. That never works very well. Ask God what you should do and then listen to the one who loves you more than you love yourself.

National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children On Saturday, September 10th, pro-life Americans throughout the country will gather at the gravesites of aborted babies and other memorial sites dedicat-ed in their honor for the third annual National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children. Solemn vigils will be held at these sites to commemorate the more than 55 million children who have lost their lives to legal abortion since 1973, and to remind our society of the humanity of the unborn child. Please join us for the memorial service in our community on Saturday, Sep-tember 10th at the Circle of Life located at Trinity Heights, Queen of Peace in Sioux City (33rd and Floyd Blvd.) at 11:00 A.M.

Tony Melendez Concert Tony Melendez has performed in all fifty states and forty-four foreign countries, and now he is coming to St. Michael Church, 2223 Indian Hills Dr., Sioux City, IA for a concert and inspirational witness talk on Septem-ber 8th at 7:00 p.m. He played for St. John Paul the Great at World Youth Day. He was thanked with a papal kiss and embrace. This is a rare night of family entertainment and inspiration you won’t want to miss. Tell your friends. All are invited. Free will offering will be taken.

A little boy once asked his mother if people who told lies went to Heaven. She replied "Of course not." "Well," he said, "it must be awfully lonesome and boring there with only God and George Washington."
