New Portrait Opportunity!

Appointment times are short – so be on time!

We are beginning to wrap up the photo sessions for our new pictorial directory. Only a few more dates will be

offered after this one. This is the last one in December. Remember: there is no sales pitch; the pictorial

directory you receive will be so helpful in getting to know other members of our parish.

Last Weekend - Christmas Memory/Honor Flowers

Once again, we will have a special section in our Christmas worship aids noting

the names of people our parishioners would like to remember or honor.

We will also try to have a poinsettia decorating the altar for each person’s name.

Please submit name(s) and a donation (if you wish) for the cost of the flowers to

the office by Sunday, December 16th.

Volunteers Needed to Deliver Christmas Food Baskets

Good Shepherd Chapel will be distributing the food baskets described below on Thursday, December 20th.

They need volunteers to transport 50 boxes of food to the Chelyan Apartments, which are about 3 miles from

the chapel. Loading and delivery begins at 7:30am sharp. If you have a vehicle that could transport several

boxes at a time, and you have a strong back, please sign-up in the gathering space for this activity.

Christmas Food Basket Donations

In keeping with a long tradition, we will provide Christmas food baskets for 350 families in the Coalburg, WV

area. For this endeavor, all of the food is mass-purchased for about $14,000. If you would like to help us make

this happen, you may put your donation in the regular collection in a special envelope marked “Christmas

Baskets.” You will find these envelopes on the credenza in the gathering space. You may also just write

“Christmas Baskets” in the memo on your checks. (We’ve already received over $8,000 in donations!)

Columbarium/Memorial Garden Update

Our second columbarium is being built and assembled. It will be installed in our Memorial Garden in the early

spring. In the meantime, the garden is undergoing some necessary changes to make way for the new addition.

Do you have questions about the new columbarium? In a few weeks, we will have a display with all the

information you could ask for in the gathering area.

Live Mini-Course on the Sacraments – begins January 17th

Interested in deepening your understanding of the Sacraments? The diocese is offering a 6-week mini-course

for the Charleston vicariate that will meet on Thursday nights from 6:00-7:30pm at Blessed Sacrament Parish in

South Charleston, beginning January 17. The weekly meetings will feature guided discussions of reading

selections that participants will be asked to complete throughout their week.

The course is an in-person version of the online courses that many catechists and teachers take through our

diocesan partnership with the University of Dayton’s Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation (VLCFF),

so successful completion of the course will also be recognized with a certificate from the VLCFF. The course fee

is $25, which includes the book for the course. (Please notify Fr. John ([email protected]) if you

would like to attend and need financial help to pay the course fee.)

Red Cross Blood Drive

The blood drive is scheduled for Saturday, January 26th, from 9am to 2pm in the Parish Hall.

To make an appointment to donate blood go to the web site: redcrossblood.org In the right-hand corner,

there is a red box, enter the sponsor code: blessedsp. At the Blessed Sacrament address there will be a red

arrow, tap that arrow. This brings up the scheduling box, pick a time and follow the directions. A donation can

also be scheduled by calling 1(800) Red-Cross or 1-800-733-2767. The blood drive can take walk-ins only if

space is available, please try to schedule an appointment. Any questions, call Susan Dickey at 304-382-3000.

Manna Meal: A Christmas message

Thanks to your generosity, 10,000+ meals were served monthly throughout 2018. We have been able to offer

our neighbors in need warmth, nourishment and a stable place to seek access to services needed to lift

themselves to a better day and life. On their behalf, thank you for your help!

We don't have the opportunity to share the many success stories due to respect for clients' anonymity.

However, what we can share is the success of knowing that our mission is 100% fulfilled every day. Thanks to

donations from supporters like you, we combine generous food contributions to offer two meals to hundreds

of individuals suffering from hunger and food insecurity. Many of our clients cannot say thanks, but we can!

We are so grateful to have supporters like you making our work possible.

Our goal is to continue our work in 2019 at the same level we have for the last few decades. As costs of food,

rent and utilities increase, along with the increase in the state's poverty rate, and reduction of SNAP (food

stamps program) benefits, more than ever we depend on the generosity and kindness of our community. Your

monetary contributions allow us to continue to serve our clients and fulfill our mission. I hear it said daily that

many of us are only one incident away from being on the other side of the service line. With your support, we

can change our community in a lasting way.

Reading 1 ZEPHANIAH 3:14-18A

Shout for joy, O daughter Zion! Sing joyfully, O Israel!

Be glad and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem!

The LORD has removed the judgment against you he has turned away your enemies;

the King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst, you have no further misfortune to fear.

On that day, it shall be said to Jerusalem: Fear not, O Zion, be not discouraged!

The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior;

he will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in his love,

he will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at festivals.

Responsorial Psalm ISAIAH 12:2-3, 4, 5-6.

R. Cry out with joy and gladness: for among you is the great and Holy One of Israel.

God indeed is my savior; I am confident and unafraid.

My strength and my courage is the LORD, and he has been my savior.

Reading 2 PHILIPPIANS 4:4-7

Brothers and sisters:

Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice!

Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Gospel LUKE 3:10-18

The crowds asked John the Baptist, “What should we do?”

He said to them in reply, “Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none.

And whoever has food should do likewise.”

Even tax collectors came to be baptized and they said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?”

He answered them, “Stop collecting more than what is prescribed.”

Soldiers also asked him, “And what is it that we should do?”

He told them, “Do not practice extortion, do not falsely accuse anyone, and be satisfied with your wages.”

Now the people were filled with expectation,

and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ.

John answered them all, saying, “I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming.

I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

His winnowing fan is in his hand to clear his threshing floor

and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

Exhorting them in many other ways, he preached good news to the people.

Reading 1 MICAH 5:1-4A

Thus says the LORD: You, Bethlehem-Ephrathah too small to be among the clans of Judah,

from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel; whose origin is from of old, from ancient

times.

Therefore the Lord will give them up, until the time when she who is to give birth has borne,

and the rest of his kindred shall return to the children of Israel.

He shall stand firm and shepherd his flock by the strength of the LORD, in the majestic name of the LORD, his

God;

and they shall remain, for now his greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth; he shall be peace.

R. Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.

Reading 2 HEBREWS 10:5-10

Brothers and sisters:

When Christ came into the world, he said:

"Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me;

in holocausts and sin offerings you took no delight."

Then I said, 'As is written of me in the scroll, behold, I come to do your will, O God.'"

First he says, "Sacrifices and offerings, holocausts and sin offerings, you neither desired nor delighted in."

These are offered according to the law.

Then he says, :Behold, I come to do your will."

He takes away the first to establish the second.

By this "will," we have been consecrated through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Gospel LUKE 1:39-45

Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah,

where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.

When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb,

and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said,

"Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.

And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.

Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled."

Tatyana is a happy 11 year old girl who is looking for a loving, caring and nurturing home. She has a pleasant

smile and beautiful reddish blond hair. She loves to learn and thrives in this kind of environment. Tatyana loves

to play with her dolls, swim, ride her bike and help around the house.

Tatyana needs a family that will stick with her through thick and thin. She thrives when given one on one

attention. Her forever family will need to demonstrate patience while she adjusts to her new home. It is felt that

Tatyana will be most successful in a home where she is the youngest or only child in the home. She needs

parents who will be committed to her and provide her the opportunity to learn and to acknowledge her

success.
