!! This ROV competition has a realistic approach, compared to the other robot

competitons because:

1)The MISSIONS in the competition simulate REAL ROV missions: maneuvering and avoiding

obstacles, underwater video inspection, takig sand samples , searching for treasure,

defusing the mine ..and all these simulated in the real conditions of the Black Sea (poor

visibility)

2) Students are stimulated to work together, to build useful robots, and be creative. They are

supposed to solve problems with design, construction, mechanics, electronics, project

management, do debriefings, technical reports, and cost analisys

3) It encourages the antreprenorial spirit and stimulates team-work, and dividing tasks similar

to a real company, in departaments: research-development, mechanics, electronics-software,tesing, management, fund-raisind and media.

4)The students get the chance to put into practice the theory they learned in school, and gain

skills.

There is NO FEE to participate in this ROV competition. Moreover, we can accomodate

international teams, we can arrange for them to stay in the Navys student campus at NO COST for

4 persons/team, during the competition days. If your team is bigger that 4 people, we can arrange for

them to stay at the campus for a very low price, compared to the hotels.

ELIGIBILTY:

The competition is mainly adressed to Teams of HIGH SCHOOL and UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ,

but it is opened to everybody.

High-School Teams should have a coordinating teacher, or at least a person of over 18 years old,

responsable for them.

To be fair, the prizes will be awarded by categories: High-School Class, University Class, and

UNLIMITED (age) Class.

DEADLINE:

Teams must submit their intentions to participate, and the approximate number of team

members, by 7 august 2013 12:00 PM GMT

PURPOSE OF THE COMPETITION:

The ASSOCIATION FOR STUDENTS AND ENGINEERS WITH TECHNICAL-SCIENTIFIC

ACTIVITY uses underwater robots as a way to get students excited about science, technology,

engineering, and help them to see the practical applications of these subjects, by simulating a real

ROV mission and to promote the use ofROVs in the Black Sea.

The competition will consist of the following components:

1) Underwater missionsthe most important

2) Engineering presentations: DEBRIEFING AFTER THE MISSIONS

3) Poster displays of your team and ROV

This competition will be organized every yearand will grow significantly from

year to year. In civilized countries this type of competitions are conducted to train younger

generations in the field of robotics, engineering and to discover the new talents.

# Rule no.1) Who can participate ?

The competition is mainly adressed to Teams of: HIGH SCHOOL students and/or UNIVERSITY

students, in order to engage and retain them in the technical field and gain experience with robotics,

but it is opened to everybody.

High-School Teams must have a coordinating teacher, or at least a person of over 18 years old,

responsable for them .

# Rule no.2) All underwater robots (ROV Remote Operated Vehicles), must pass approval tests

before entering competition.

The approval tests will be done on practice days 13 and 14th of august 2013.

APPROVAL REQUIREMENTS:

# Rule no.3) Size limitations: The maximum dimensions of ROVs must not exceed a cube with sides

of 1 meter.(we want the teams to develop a man portable ROV easy to carry)

# Rule no.4) Mass limitations: ROVs mass must not exceed 20 kg. (it must be a portable ROV, easy

to carry)

# Rule no.5) Power supply & limitations. ROVs power must only come from the umbilical cable

linking to the surface, connected to a power supply , of max 220 Volts (AC, o DC current).

Teams can bring and use their own batteries and power supply or use the one provided by the

staff. Organizers will only provide batteries of 12V or 24V , max 15Amps (fuse protection) and 220vfor the laptops etc.

Your power supply & batteries must have a SAFETY FUSE of maximum 15 Amps (we will check).

ROVs umbilical( power cable) must be well isolated from sea water, and it is recomended to have

neutral buoyancy if possible (must not sink or rise to the surface). You can use for example, a

network cable (UTP), with pieces of polystyrene / cork / wood etc..

# Rule no.6) The organizers can provide a wired underwater camera, and display, or you can comewith your own underwater camera, to attach the ROV to help pilot in driving the ROV, if your team

wishes. But the use of the underwater camera is not mandatory

# Rule no.7) The robot must be able to dive to a depth of at least 5m and surface back.

NOTE: in case of bad weather, the competition days can change with

1-2 days, so we recommend planning some extra days to your trip to

Constanta. Also you would have time to visit the city and its history,

!! Official COMPETITION DAY !!

15 august 2013 , in Tomis harbour

Each team shoud complete the missions to achieve the best score .

1st MISSION : THE RACE! .... time allotted for completion 10 minutes.

Race your ROV from the START position through the GATES and back to FINISH in the shortest

time. The judges will count the time.

Completing the 1st

Mission will earn yor team points.

Total points won in the 1st

Mission are calculated with the formula:

1st

mission points= 20.000 / (divided by) time (in seconds) to complete the mission.

Example: one team has completed the 1

st

Mission in 2.33 minutes(2 minutes and 33 seconds)

= 120 seconds+33 seconds= 153 seconds.

1st Mission ponts= 20.000 / 153 seconds = 130.7= aprox 131 points !!

2nd MISSION : Obtaining samples .... time allotted for completion: 10 minutes.

In this challenge, your ROV should collect and bring to the surface samples of:

* Sand and rocks from the bottom (3-5 m) . The judges will measure the mass of the sand and rocks

collected with a precision digital scale. Your team will gain 1 point for each 10g (grams) of sample.

Example: for collecting and bringing to surface 1400grams of sand, you get 140 points!

**CRABS: The judges will give yor team 100 POINTS for 1 CRAB

HINT: For collecting sand, you can build a sampling device from an electric bilge pump, with a hose,

and a small container where the samples are collected.

3rd MISSION Finding and recovering the TREASURE CHEST hidden partially in the sand: 300

points. Each teams maximum time allotted for completion of Mission 3 is 10 minutes.

This will be the most demanding, and difficult mission, that is why it has 300 points.

4th MISSIONDEFUSING and RECOVERING the MINE : 150 points ( you can use a hook attached

to the ROV) and bring it to the START position 250 POINTS

The maximum time allotted for completion of TASK4 is 10 minutes

5th MISSION DEBRIEFING and TEAMs PRESENTATION of to the jury, justify the constructive

solution, the problems encountered during the competition and future improvements.

The judges will award for this mission between (50-100 points)

The maximum time allotted for each debriefing and presentation is 15 minutes.

Who are we?

We are a team of talented young students and engineers from the faculties: Automatics, Electronics,

Aero-space Engineering,Computers .X-Projects team has now over 36 members and has been

founded 3 years ago by Milian Theodor.

We are involved in many projects in the field of robotics, uavs, aerial photos/video's , video

inspections, phone apps, custom solutions.

We participated and won at several places in national and international contests for robotics:

NASA's Third Annual Lunabotics Mining Competition 21-26 mai 2012 la Kennedy Space

Center, Florida

Robochallenge 2011, 2012 - local califications, nationals 3'rd place

2'nd place at INVENTIKA from Gaudeamus International Fair 2011 held at Romexpo , Bucharest

Infomatrix 2012, 2place . Infomatrix 2013, 2prize .

Team members have participated also on :

NASA Space Settlement Design Competition 2007,2008. NASA Moonbuggy 2009.

We've held the First Romanian ROV Competiton in the Black Sea, on 19 august in Tomis port

, where 4 teams from Constanta, Bucharesturesti, Pitesti have participated.
