ward. So, this is my direct appeal for you to become even more involved in making your club work. On page 3, you’ll see a flyer that will be posted in conspicuous locations in the coming weeks. Every com-mittee whose name appears in red type needs additional volunteers. In a few months we’ll be electing next year’s Officers and Directors and perhaps one of them should be you. Please become more involved in BSC. Show up for workdays. Volunteer wherever you can. Come to so-cials. Join in cruises. Participate in races. Join a committee or two. Try it, you’ll like it. I promise.

From the Commodore (continued from page 1)

You may have noticed a new look under the clubhouse. We are trying to enhance and enlarge the “Gab-by Circle” to accommodate more members this summer. To that end, the carts have been moved to a new location and the seating area expanded. Please leave the carts where they are and feel free to use the tables! This is a work in progress and nothing is permanent. We just want you, the members, to see what is possible. Feel free to grab any board member or dockmaster if you have suggestions or com-ments. Our goal is to clean up the area under the clubhouse to make it more attractive and user-friend-ly! Could dancing girls be far behind?

BLACKBEARD’S EPITAPH

It will be a couple more months before we leave our home in Raleigh and head to England for a ‘new life.'  We have been in USA almost 30 years and have made many friends, whom we will miss.  Blackbeard Sailing Club has been a wonderful ‘second home’ for us, and it will be difficult to find a similar venue for friends and camaraderie. We wish we could take Eroica with us, but it’s not feasible, so she needs a new owner.  Everyone says “What a lovely boat”, but no one wants the upkeep.  Maybe you know someone who would like a chal-lenge!   I believe that Eroica has enjoyed BSC as much as we have, at times the owner was more scared than the boat “Give me power,” it would cry, and all was saved!

We have so many stories that we could tell over and over again; at least we will have a new audience in England!

by Wendy & Arnold

Blackbeard Sailing Club, and the upper Neuse River, were once again dominant in the first ICRC Regatta of the year, The Soundbank ETYSA Regatta. Despite perfect weather, the lower Neuse River was unable to field a team, which puts the team racing concept on shaky ground. With two days of bright sunshine and winds in the 8-17 knot range, the racing was done in Chamber of Commerce conditions. Tom McK-night won the Spinnaker Class but was hotly contested by Drew McCrocklin on Team Elite for second place. BSC took the top four positions in the Jib and Main fleet with Hans Lassen in his very fast San Juan 21 winning the class with straight bullets, followed by Dave Whitney on Silent Pursuit and Ed Doughty on Super Bueno. Joe Draper rounded things out with a win in the cruising class, although since he beat the New Bern bridge tender, he better not be expecting any quick openings when heading to town! As is always the case with the post-race meal of burgers and brats, the event was a huge success and once again we managed to raise a respectable (although yet to be completely determined) amount of money for the Junior Sailing Program. Next up was a VERY blustery Cinco de Mayo regatta, which is a NYRA race that was raced out of BSC. The wind instrument on my dock said the wind averaged 18 knots, with the top gust of 28 knots during the regatta. Since this is a small boat one design race, different classes had different ideas about the conditions. The Sunfish were reveling in the planning conditions with the regulars at the top; Paul Wells in first, Jack Bond in second after capsizing in the first race and Rob Eberle in third. The San Juans and Ensigns had to work a bit harder at it. Of the eight boat San Juan fleet, Sarah Parker (with her mom and dad as crew) took first, Mark Weinhiemer on Deuces Wild took second and Hans Lassen ( I told you he was fast) in third with a first time sailor on board. The Ensigns had a three boat fleet, that quickly turned into a two boat fleet when Mutiny broke her gooseneck and had to retire. Anasazi Chief took first and Red Stripe was second for the day. Full results for the Cinco de Mayo Regatta can be found at http://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/applet_regatta_results.php?regatta_id=14621

Beer Stein Photos by Bill Green

Finally, the Oar Race and Beer Stein Regatta were moved from Labor Day weekend to May, and just to prove Mother Nature has a sense of humor, we had typical Labor Day race conditions. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to race, or should I say fortunately. Saturday was hot and humid until a storm blew through late Saturday afternoon. I haven’t seen results as of yet, but I went out for a motor boat ride on Satur-day and Boartaint and Silent Pursuit were well in the lead, followed by the new J95 owned by John Rice, a new boat to the river, and Mighty Fine. Everyone seemed to be having a good day. I looked on-line and it looks like there was a decent breeze for Sunday’s race back up the river. Rumor has it Boar-taint won the Sunday race, followed by John Rice on the J95 – welcome to BSC John!

BLACKBEARD’S EPITAPH

by Irene VuichETYSA SoundBank Regatta

It was a bright, beautiful, hot and sunny day for the ETYSA/SoundBank Regatta held at Blackbeard Sail-ing Club on April 29-30, 2017. Fourteen boats signed up for the races and the wind cooperated! For those who have never been involved in one of these activities, the on-land prior days’ activities are many! Soliciting volunteers comes first! A dedicated crew of 15 Blackbeard and ETYSA members worked the week before to hose down under the clubhouse and picnic shelter, find the ETYSA and SoundBank banners, clean out refrigerators and freezers, fill propane tanks and check ice supplies, rearrange deck furniture, purchase food at Sam’s, then “schlepp” it upstairs to the kitchen, and work the night before slicing and dicing and getting food platters, crockpots and grilling utensils assembled. On the day of the races, early risers (7:30 a.m.) were available to register additional racers and confirm meal orders. One BSC member even volunteered to pick up an order of Dunkin’ Donuts at 6:30 a.m.! The food prep crew began their work late morning, with the grillers arriving around 1:00. All ears were on the Race Committee VHF blurbs……timing the grilling is a very exacting activity……too soon, burgers are over-done, too late, hungry sailors start to mutiny! Once the sailors “come back from the sea,” all hands are on deck……like an ant hill with many scurrying back and forth to load up the tables with victuals and drink! At 4:00, three of our youngest ETYSA campers rang the dinner bell (over and over and over and over), directing over 80 hungry and thirsty sailors through the one-way-only line! All were fed with a few leftovers and a seemingly seamless delivery. Only those behind the scenes know how it happens that way. Thanks also, to those who hung around for the thankless job of cleaning up! Kudos to the ETYSA junior sailors who painted those wonderful award plates; and the donations of the sailors who contributed to the 50/50 raffle and purchase of ETYSA T-shirts to make this not only a fun day, but a profitable one for this yearly ETYSA fundraiser. Our thanks to the Race Committee for making the event at all possible. For them, it was a long, hot day on the water. But all would agree, a worthwhile effort for those involved.

BLACKBEARD’S EPITAPH

Memorial Day racing events came early this year as the powers that be decided to go for greater partici-pation and more predictable weather. Well, it didn’t quite all work out that way……14 boats did sign up and race in Fairfield Harbor’s Annual Oar Race. A pursuit race format was utilized this year to encourage more cruisers to come race, and some did. Conditions at the start were about 7kts westerly. The RC decided to shorten the course to 10 miles, fin-ishing at Mark 8 at Minnesott. But…..the wind failed about halfway down the course as the later starters arrived there. Slowly the wind shifted to the North, very light, but with enough heft to move one heav-ier boat along in the center of the course. Others went left and were further befuddled by lack of wind. Reports were that one boat anchored for lunch as they sensed a reversal in their direction in the offing. We all waited for the Sea Breeze to come in. In the meantime, Boartaint and Silent Pursuit continued onward in the freshest new wind. Half the fleet retired in frustration. The remainder finished as the Sea Breeze kicked in and all had a fine ride on to Oriental. Tom Mcknight and his war-painted crew crossed First, followed by Dave Whitney and Silent Pursuit, and then the J-95, Windtrip of John Rice. Then came Mighty Fine, with Arch Altman and its garrulous crew, followed by Simo Waananen on Divine in the Heinritz 38. The lone cruiser to survive finished First and Only in that Class, and the Corsair of Eric Frank, on Sweet Alice, completed the finishing, winning the MultiHull award.

BLACKBEARD’S EPITAPH

The 2nd cruise of the BSC Full Moon Cruisers was a big success May 5 - 7. The Friday evening sail was cancelled due to high winds. Out of 14 sailors signed up, 11 went down the Neuse to Club Foot Creek on Saturday in windy 17+ winds from SSW. Most sailors left between 9:30 and noon, went across to 17 and put up one sail, and screamed down the Neuse By the time I got to the ferry, I was averaging 7 kts with a reefer for sail. Very good, safe ride. We anchored up and called the Pirate Uber for a water taxi for a 5pm round-up at the Drechsler 41’ Hot Chocolate. Cape Bill was Uber on the water. Everyone brought food to share and no one left hungry. Very gracious host boat and we all thank you, Sandy and Bill. Sunday saw boats departing from 8 - 11am. Three of the 11 sailboats sailed all the way back to Blackbeard IN AGAIN 17+ knots, on the nose, windy conditions. The smallest to leave the harbor was 26’ and the largest was 41’. Bruce encountered engine issues and returned to port on Saturday in his Com-pac 23. Only 2 found the bottom departing Sunday morning with no issues getting free.. The overwhelming consensus was an excellent weekend sail trip. We all hope to see more boats leave the docks in June. Charlie Batchelor, S/V Wings. Freedom 28CK The May cruise leader.

Here is the information you need for the next Full Moon Cruise on June 16, 17, and 18.  We will depart Friday morning for South River.  When you get to South River, look for Magic Spirit (catamaran), which will be anchored.  Please use channel 71 to hail and anchor nearby.  We will have several dinghies to ferry folks to the anchor boats for sundowners.  As always, please bring your own beverage and a snack to share.  We will break the raft of the anchor boats before sundown.  The next morning is a free sail, ending up at River Dunes before 5 pm (that is when the dock staff goes home) – again, use channel 71 to hail “Blackbeard boats” for assistance with your dock lines.. For those of you who cannot join us on Friday, plan to come straight to River Dunes on Saturday. Jerry was able to negotiate a $.35 discount to $1.90 per foot for dockage.  That means for a 30’ boat, the dock fee will be $57.  Happy hour will be at one of the fire pits.  For those who want, the restaurant will provide a private room and we can order from the menu. Don’t forget your bathing suit for the hot tubs and pool!  Dinner dress is dock casual – it has been said that sailors have two kinds of clothes: wrin-kled and dirty wrinkled!  Please wear the wrinkled ones! We will depart for home Sunday morning. Obviously, we need a head count for the dinner and dockage.  Jerry will provide River Dunes with the boat list they require.  Please RSVP as soon as pos-sible to Jerry Harwood at [email protected].  He needs the following information: Your name, boat name, boat type, length, beam, depth;  what amperage you need (30 or 50).; which nights you will join the group: (Friday at South River and/or Saturday at River Dunes) and  whether you will join us for dinner.  Of course, there is no additional fee for pool, fire pit or happy hour.  Below s an example of what you should submit: Jim/Joni Floyd – Salty – Catalina 320 – L32’ – B11’ – D5’ – 30 amp service – both nights – yes for dinner. Please, please send your information to Jerry by June 3 – he has to turn the list in to River Dunes by June 4.
