afety Harbor Resort and Spa is one of America’s oldest and finest spa resorts. Guests have been enjoying the healing mineral waters and tranquil waterfront location on Tampa Bay since the turn of the century.

Through the years Safety Harbor has been known as the Florida destination “where healing waters flow”.TM In 1539 Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto reached the shores of what is now Tampa Bay, and discovered five natural springs. Believing he had found the legendary “Fountain of Youth” somehow missed by Ponce de Leon, De Soto established a camp here, naming Safety Harbor’s mineral springs Espiritu Santo Springs, or “Springs of the Holy Spirit.”

In 1945, Dr. Salem H. Baranoff bought the springs, turning it into a health spa and opening accommodations directly connected to the spa to overnight visitors. Dr. Baranoff extolled the benefits of naturopathic medicine combined with the therapeutic properties of the mineral water. His partnership with two other physicians in 1950 turned the resort, known then as The Safety Harbor Spa, into a modern health center offering massages, mineral and steam baths, health foods and hot packs.

Recognized as an historic landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1964 and a Florida Heritage Landmark in 1997, Safety Harbor Resort and Spa remains one of the most comprehensive spa and fitness centers in the country. Today the springs serve as the primary source of water for the resort, used in the pools, restaurant, and, of course, the spa.

Most recently, Safety Harbor Resort and Spa has experienced its own revitalization. Through a multi-million dollar renovation, this historic property now boasts a new ballroom, beautifully restored guest rooms, a new Spa Sanctuary and Tranquility Garden, offering a true destination for a memorable wedding and reception.

Wedding celebrations are beautifully orchestrated at this landmark resort, whether you choose the Four Springs Ballroom, the new Athena Ballroom with waterfront views or an outdoor venue for ceremony and reception.

Wedding RingsThis is among the most ancient of wedding traditions. The circle of the wedding band represents eternity for the bride and groom and their eternal love. The ancient Egyptians originated the custom of placing the ring on the fourth finger of the left hand, for they believed that a vein goes directly to the heart from that finger. The earliest of rings were made from braided grass, hay, leather, bone and ivory.

Wedding CakeDates back to the Romans, whom broke a loaf of wheat bread over the bride’s head, representing fertility, blessing for a long life and children. Guests ate the crumbs as a sign of good luck. Over time, it became a tradition to stack several cakes atop one another, as tall as possible. The bride and groom would then kiss over this tower, attempting not to knock it over. If they were successful, a lifetime of good fortune was certain for the new couple. Today, as a sign of posterity, couples freeze the top portion of their wedding cake, thawing it out on their first anniversary to share with one another.

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue and a Silver

Sixpence in Your ShoeThis good luck saying originated in the Victorian era. Brides today often incorporate special items into their wedding attire according to the rhyme. “Something Old” symbolizes a link to the bride’s family and the past. A family heirloom, such as a piece of antique jewelry or a family member’s wedding dress can represent the old object. Or a bride can sew lace or ribbon into the hem of her dress. “Something New” represents good fortune and success in the bride’s new life. A bride may wear a new string of pearls or use her wedding gown as the new item. “Something Borrowed” symbolizes the love and support of family and friends in times of need. A borrowed object can be a token from a happily married friend, such as a lace handkerchief. “Something Blue” is an object that symbolizes faithfulness and loyalty. Brides commonly choose a blue garter or ribbon. In England placing a silver sixpence in the bride’s shoe is a symbol of wealth. This is not just to bring the bride financial wealth, but also a wealth of happiness and joy throughout her married life.

Taking of Each Other’s Right HandThe open right hand is a symbol of strength, resource and purpose. The coming together of both right hands is a symbol that both the bride and groom can depend on each other and the resources that each brings to the marriage. It also represents the merger of their lives together.

Why the Bride Stands on the LeftDuring the marriage ceremony, the bride stand on the left and the groom on the right. The origin of this goes back to the days when a groom would capture his bride by kidnapping her. If the groom had to fight off other men who also wanted her as their bride, he would hold his bride-to-be with his left hand allowing his right hand to be free to use his sword.

Bouquet TossTossing of the bridal bouquet is a custom which has its roots in England. It was believed that the bride could pass along good fortune to others. In order to obtain this fortune, spectators would try to tear away pieces of the bride’s clothing and flowers. In an attempt to get away, the bride would toss her bouquet into the crowd. Tradition is that the single woman who catches the bouquet is the one who receives the bride’s fortune and will marry next.

The HoneymoonThe bride and groom’s honeymoon hasn’t always been a post-wedding vacation together, as we know it today. The word actually originated in northern Europe from a tradition involving wine made from mead and honey. In order to bring good luck, the newlywed couple drank the sweet wine for a month after the wedding. Since a month was known as a “moon” this period of time acquired the name honeymoon.
