Nine Breath Meditation to Purify Our Subtle Wind Energy (Prana Yoga)

OM VAJRA AMRITA KUNDALI HANA HANA HUNG PHAT

OM SVABHAVA SHUDDHA SARVA DHARMA SVABHAVA SHUDDHO HAM Sitting in the vajra posture begin by visualizing that your physical body, composed of flesh, organs and bones, gradually melts into brilliant light until only a holographic image remains that sparkles like a rainbow. At this point make a vajra fist (thumb inside) with the left hand and place it under the right armpit. With the right hand make a vajra fist and extending the right middle finger, placing the index finger on top of it, and gently block the left nostril.

Clearly visualizing the three channels, inhale through the right nostril imagining that the pure essences of

Page 3: Black Manjushri

the five elements, positive and healing energies and all the holy beings’ blessings, enter the right channel in the form of white light. This white light absorbs into the subtle wind energy at the heart. Now block the right nostril and exhale through the left nostril in three short breaths, imagining that all sickness, polluted elemental winds, inner demons and interferences relating to the left side of the body, are expelled in the aspect of polluted black smoke.

This exercise should now be repeated on the opposite side to purify the left channel and expel all negativities relating to the right side of the body.

Placing the hands in the mudra of meditative equipoise and breathing evenly through both nostrils, visualize that all the positive and healing energy of the holy beings enter both the right and left channels and absorb into the subtle wind energy at the heart. In three short breaths, through both nostrils, breathe out all negativities, physical and mental sickness, interferences, demons and polluted winds from both sides of the body.

Self Arising as Black Manjushri

Everything becomes the same nature as emptiness.Out of emptiness from the black letter PAM arises a black lotus. In the center of this black lotus from the letter AH appears a moon, and above this moon from a green letter YAM arises a green wind mandala. In the center of the wind mandala from a red letter RAM appears a red triangular fire mandala. The lotus, wind and fire mandalas contain the essences of the five elements. These essences absorb into space. In the center of the moon appears my mind in the aspect of a black letter DHIH. Lights radiate out from the letter DHIH and then return fulfilling the two purposes of attaining enlightenment and helping others to overcome suffering. In an instant from the black letter DHIH I arise as Black Manjushri. I am in a very wrathful aspect with one face and two arms. In my right hand with a wrathful mudra I hold the wisdom sword that eliminates all interferences, and in my left hand holds heart the stem of an Uptala flower whose petals unfold beside the ear, and support a volume of the Prajnaparamita (Perfection of Wisdom).Half my red hair is knotted at my crown, the other half falls on my shoulders.I have a big belly and tiger skin loincloth. I wear various wrathful bone ornaments such as a crown of five skulls and a necklace of fifty freshly cut heads. My three eyes are red and bulging round and in the nature of RAM, YAM and KAM. My fangs are bared and my tongue curled back. I am surrounded by fiercely blazing flames of wisdom. My root guru is above my crown in the form of Vairocana who embodies the entire lineage. At my crown is a white OM the nature of the enlightened body, at my throat is red AH the nature of the enlightened speech and at my heart is blue HUNG the nature of the enlightened mind.

ESSENCE MANTRA

At my heart is a sun cushion with a black letter DHIH at its center, around this two mantra garlands circle in a clockwise direction.OM AH RA PA TSA NA DHIH HUNG (108x or as many times as possible)At this point we should meditate on emptiness of phenomenon, self and others, based on the method we are familiar with such as the Heart Sutra or dependent origination.

SPECIAL ESSENCE MANTRA

OM EH RA PA TSA NA DHIH HUNG (21x)After we have repeated for as many times as possible the essence mantra and meditated on emptiness we can repeat the special essence mantra that helps to stabilize and give extra power to our practice. As you recite the mantra become the wisdom sword. ACTION MANTRA

OM TRASO / CHUSO / DURTASO / DURMISO / NYING GOLA CHO / KA LA DZA / KAM SHAM TRAM BAY PHAT SVAHA (21x)

Black Manjushri Healing Methods

1. PURIFICATION OF OBSTACLES AND INTERFERENCES

Blazing Flames radiate out from the heart, burning up emotional problems, mind pollution, interferences and karmic obstacles that cause sickness and inner conflict to oneself, other beings and the environment.

OM TRA SO / CHUSO / DURTA SO / DURMI SO / NYING GO LA CHO / KA LA DZA / KAM SHAM TRAM BAY PHAT SVAHA (21x)

2. PROTECTION FROM SICKNESS

After repeating the essence and action mantras as many times as possible, join the thumb to the top joint of the ring finger on each hand and then blow on the tip of the ring finger emblazoning it with the mantras. Focus this on the fourth toes as well. Then we should rub the tips of these fingers on the soles of our feet and in the armpits.

If a black substance is found in these places (ie. soles of feet or armpit) then place it on the nine entrances to the body listed beneath while repeating the action mantra. If a black substance is not found, imagine one. Envision a suit of vajra armor under the skin that protects us from any contagious diseases or pollution entering the body.

3. CALMING DISTURBING PEOPLE AND SPIRITS

With hands joined together, above the crown of the head, in the prostration mudra , click the tongue against the top palate of our mouth and clap our hands together three times. Then recite the action mantra which calms disturbing emotions, energies and erratic mental conditions.

OM TRA SO / CHU SO / DURTA SO / DURMI SO / NYING GO LA CHO / KA LA DZA / KAM SHAM TRAM BAY PHAT SVAHA (21x)

4. SUPPRESSING Interfering Spirits

Visualizing oneself in the aspect of Black Manjushri, sit with the knees brought up to the chest with the arms wrapped around them, then place the big toe of our right foot over the big toe of our left foot. Keep this posture press down and trap all interferences under the feet causing them to become weaker and powerless.

OM TRA SO / CHU SO / DURTA SO / DURMI SO / NYING GO LA CHO / KA LA DZA / KAM SHAM TRAM BAY PHAT SVAHA (21x)

5. HEALING NECTAR

With a container of water in front, visualizing oneself in the aspect of Black Manjushri, imagine nectar radiating from the letter HUNG at the heart. This nectar flows with our breath and its special qualities

Page 6: Black Manjushri

are transferred to the water when blown on transforming into nectar. Black Manjushri then dissolves into the water, making it so powerful that when imbibed it all obscurations are purified and sickness caused by negative karma and physical health problems improve.

OM TRA SO / CHU SO / DURTA SO / DURMI SO / NYING GO LA CHO / KA LA DZA / KAM SHAM TRAM BAY PHAT SVAHA (21x)

6. HEALING ARTHRITIS

Drink the healing water and recite the action mantra before blowing on mala. Then massage, outwardly towards the extremities, the affected limbs and joints. When tiny wounds appear on the extremities it is a sign that we are healing. To heal this condition we should also try to avoid eating meat and consuming strong alcoholic drinks.

and lead all sentient beings without exception to that exalted ground as well.

May the precious, healthy and happy mind of peace, which is not yet born, arise and grow. Which is

born have no decline and increase forever more.

VERSES OF AUSPICIOUSNESS

At dawn or dusk, at night or midday,

May the three jewels grant us their blessings,

May they help us to achieve all realizations,

And sprinkle the path of our lives with various signs of auspiciousness.

The Eleven Essential Points for Practice

1. Time of PracticeTo begin with, the essential time is before dawn, when the twinkling of the stars has not faded. Although this is the ideal time for this practice, but it can also be done at any time of day or night. Two other good times for practice of Black Manjushri are before going to sleep in the evening,

Page 8: Black Manjushri

for protection during the night, and when first rising in the morning, for protection during the day. 2. The Prana YogaThe essential of expelling the breath is to imagine that all your inner illness, demons, and obstacles issue forth in the form of mist as you draw in the breath through the right nostril and expel it through the left three times. 3. The DirectionThe essential direction to face the east. 4. The Body PostureThe essential physical posture is for the body to be in the vajra position with the spine held straight. 5. The clear visualization of Black ManjushriThe essential for deity meditation begins with the preliminaries of taking refuge and awakening bodhicitta. The form of Black Manjushri can also be the same as Orange Manjushri if you are more versed in the other practice.

6. The Mantra The essential of the mantra for recitation is to imagine that in your heart, on a moondisc, is a blueblack DHIH around which is a rosary of the mantra, black in colour, emanating light rays of five different colours, and circling to the right. OM TRA SO CHU SO DUR TA SO DUR MI SO NYING GO LA CHOD KHA LA DZAH KAM SHAM TRAM BAY PHAT SVAHA

7. The dwelling place One of the best times to do this practice is before the main door of the home has been opened for the day. If this is not possible, practice anyway. Remember that these are guidelines, not absolutes. This refers to having the front door closed to have secure boundaries. Simply having the door shut acts as a boundary. 8. The KendaThe essential point of the sound produced by clicking the tongue back from the palate, one should click the tongue strongly three times. This causes fear in hindering forces by reverberating ones mantra power. This can also be useful when setting boundaries or practicing in a public area where people may be around. The kenda can "replace" the mantra at those times. 9. The SubstanceThe essential substance for an auspicious connection with black manjushri comes from moistening the two ring fingers with spittle from reciting the mantra, and scraping a bit of grime from the hollow of the soles of both feet. This is one way to connect with his protective essence. 10. The Anointing The essential of anointing the orifices is to anoint the nine orifices and the sixteenth vertebra. (The nine orifices are: both eyes, both ears, both nostrils, the mouth, the urethra, and the anus. Although there are many different identifications, this explanation of the sixteenth vertebra as the

Page 9: Black Manjushri

mingmen is the correct meaning.) 11. The Suppression of Enemies & InterferersThe essential of suppression, sealing with the toe, is to imagine that the threefold universe below the realm of Brahma, and chiefly those who cause you harm, are suppressed under the feet (of Manjushri). Press down your left big toe with the right big toe three times.

It is not necessary to do each and every part of this practice each time it is performed. The essential sections for meditation upon Black Manjushri are the visualization and the mantra. Then complete the practice with prayers for dedication of the merit. The most important point for any practice is to have total confidence. This conviction will accomplish all your goals. If you have doubts and uncertainties, these provide the space for obstacles to harm you.The benefits of practicing this are the pacification of the torment caused by the violent sorcery of others; grave illness and plague; fear of harm by powerful demons; obstacles caused by the maras on the basis of bad astrological influences, bad years, months, days, and stars; (the risks of) acting as the leader of an assembly of Sangha or as the leader of a large group of people; (the dangers of) initiation where the land has not been brought under control; (the risks of) performing acts of violence and so forth; traveling at night; types of contamination such as contamination a corpse or uncleanliness; bad omens; infectious diseases such as ulcerous sores, (the effects of) digging earth in which spirits live, cutting trees in which spirits live, and breaking stones in which spirits live; (the risks of) constructing a new house, or pulling down an old one. In brief, whatever thoughts of anxiety arise, such as whether you have eaten something you shouldn't have, or bought something you shouldn't have, will be quieted by practicing this. (To complete a traditional Black Manjushri retreat we have to recite 700,000 essence mantras and

10,000 action mantras).

The remedy for extreme cases of sorcery or black magic affliction

If under the influence of powerful magic, or if in great doubt, or if heavily involved in conceptuality, put on your clothes upside down, and if you have hair, bind it on the top of your head. Then, visualize From the sphere of Emptiness, on top of a lotus and sun, I myself instantaneously become the wrathful Manjushri, black in colour, with black hair tied up in knot on the crown, having a single face and two hands with three red and bulging eyes. His fangs are bared, his tongue curled up and my belly is large. With the sword in his right hand blazing with flames, he suppresses obstructing demons, and with the

Page 10: Black Manjushri

left holds a book at his heart. He sits in the midst of a blazing mass of flames with his right leg drawn in the left extended. On the crown of my head sits my Root Lama in the form of Vairocana Buddha.

one can either use the two fingers like a sword mudra or a wisdom sword to destroy any obstacle or enemy force.
