Schools at the heart of our CommunityWhile we may be nearly halfway through the year, I would encourage everyone to think about how we can all get involved in the four local schools in the Upper Ross.

We have some great schools in this area. Rasmussen State School is a close-knit school community with a strong environmental focus. Kelso State School encourages families to be involved in their children’s education. The Good Shepherd Catholic Community School offers a faith-based alternative to parents in the area. They are feeder schools to Thuringowa State High School, which has produced some outstanding young men and women who are keen to take their place in our community.

Whether it means giving your time to help out in the classroom, supporting the schools ’fundraising activities or donating your Woolworths Earn and Learn stickers, you can make a big difference in these children’s lives. The Premier’s Reading Challenge 2013 is now underway. Even if you are not taking part officially, use this opportunity to read with your child or talk to them about books. These children are the future for our community, so let’s all find a way to contribute to their learning and sense of self-worth.Sam Cox, Member for Thuringowa

An American Cowboy and an Australian Stockman were riding their horses on a cattle property in Queensland. The Australian gloated with a smile “This here is 100 hectares of land.” The American replied. “Well I have 200 hectares of land back home in Texas.”The Australian sensing the competitive mood added. “I’ve got 100 head of cattle on this property.” The American replied with a higher number. “Well I have 300 head of cattle back home in Texas.”

“We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.” -Abraham Lincoln

Enjoy some Time Out !

Come and join our Time Out group and have fun with great company on Tuesdays at 9.30am.

Just for Laughs

The duel continued with the Australian proclaiming, “Well there are two watering holes on my property.”The American leaned back in his saddle with a smug smile. “And I have four watering holes on my ranch back in Texas.”By now the Australian Stockman was agitated with this American and his attitude. As the pair rode along the Qld cattle property, a kangaroo leapt out from the bush and darted across the trail.“Holy heck!” shouted the American as his horse reared up. “What on earth was that?”“Oh that!” The Australian smiled. “Just a grasshopper.”

New Manager New Direction for the Upper Ross Community Centre

The Upper Ross Community Centre has a new manager after long term manager Helen Hobson retired recently. Susan Perry, the bubbly new director has a vision for the centre with a focus on community involvement. She would like to see the centre function as a hub for the Upper Ross with more not for profit businesses and community groups making use of the space. “I would like to see an increase in community involvement with the centre across all ages, all cultures and all abilities” Miss Perry said. “What we want to see is more people using the centre to it’s full potential, because there’s a lot of capacity and potential for growth.”Susan explains her role at the community centre is that of a caretaker, looking after the facilities and providing support and services to the community. The centre provides a space to meet with friends for cards, information workshops, playgroups, and fitness lessons to name a few of the current activities. The space can be used by the community for much more if they’d choose to, Susan explains. “The centre belongs to the community for their use and I’d love to see more involvement in the future.”
