Here’s your chance to see the show and more! The November FRCQ meeting program is more than just a review of the Colors of Life exhibit. We’ll start the evening with a “no comment” show of all the entries that were not selected for this exhibit – no artist names and no work titles. This allows you to see the range of work our juror, Jane Sauer, had to review, the quality of the photog- raphy, and the variety of the detail shots. The next part of the program provides some inside information about the Carnegie Arts Center and Alliance, Nebraska. You’ll also learn more about Jane Sauer and her jury process. Then we’ll see each work she selected into the exhibit with the artist’s name and the work’s title. Jane wrote a brief critique of each accepted piece which will be read with the presentation of the full and detail images. Following the presentation of the images, we’ll have a question/answer session about exhibits, future venues for exhibits, jurors and jurying processes, upcoming changes to our entry forms, and tips on making your next entry successful. © Kathy Keating “Inhale” © Joan Sowada “Wet Feet Musing” © Rebecca Fellows ”Ballet” © Regina Benson “Twilight at Sea”

Yesterday I taught a full day class at a local quilt store. The smallgroup of women chatted as they played with myriad ways to stitch, quilt and finish art quilts. Sometime after lunch, one participant

received a phone call and became visibly distraught.“Is everything okay?” someone asked. It was not. The call was from her doctor. Her breast cancer had

returned. The sewing machines stopped. All hands stilled, voices hushed,

and eyes focused as she told us about the mastectomy, chemo and radiationonly 15 months ago. After treatment there was a good mammogram, thena bad mammogram, now a biopsy. The news. Again.

The compassion and conversation were heartfelt. Cancer truly isthe four-letter word of our time. No one among us is untouched by breastcancer, but not because we know some one who has battled, because weknow so many.

“I must leave now,” she told us. “Thank you for listening to me. Idon’t usually feel comfortable sharing my sadness with strangers.” We allhelped pack and transport her supplies, and each offered a hug and person-al comment. I am always amazed by the way women new to one anotherare able to connect in profound and genuine ways.

The gravity of such news weighed upon us all. As we workedthrough the afternoon, we shared our own breast cancer connections. Wetalked about the impact of cancer on creativity. One close friend goingthrough chemo told me, “I don’t want the toxins they put into my body toleach into my work.” Many are simply too exhausted by treatment toescape into their creative worlds. Don’t discount the magnitude of theword “energy” in the phrase “creative energy.” Yet others are able to con-nect art and healing, and find a way to do both simultaneously.

In our heads, we all know life can change in the blink of an eye. Butwe forget this as we trek through each day until something stops us dead inour tracks. As Maslow simplified in his Hierarchy of Needs Pyramid, wemust address physical and safety needs before finding the freedom to pur-sue aesthetic experiences. Art may be essential to the human experience, but the luxury to create it is a gift.

Life can and does change in a heartbeat. Count your blessings. I do.

3 Day Workshop : March 12 - 14, 2010.

Don't miss out on all the fun of having an inspiring, rewarding, creative, and intensive three days.

New web site: www.artistbrettbarker.com

Location : Club Tico in Fort Collins

My first choice for a workshop for FRCQ was BrettBarker. She is known as the coauthor (with KatiePasquini Masopust) of the book "Color and

Composition for the Creative Quilter." But I got to knowBrett before ... when ...

Brett is an incredibly organized instructor whoconnects to everyone in her class, whatever level they areat. She brings each one up to a level of design they didn'tknow they could do.

I was so lucky to get into the last Alegre Retreatthat was still in Santa Fe about four years ago. My hardwork before and during Brett's workshop paid off wonder-fully. At the end of our almost five days of classes every-one went around to everyone else's classes to see what theyhad done. I'm sure our class got the most gasps of admira-tions. Our class consisted of traditional quilters transition-ing to contemporary quilters to established quilt artists.Brett brought out creativeness, eagerness, and diligence inall of us.

Our workshop will be using fabric, either fused orglued otherwise, to work on design and composition andalong the way observe how colors and their values influ-ence design.

Be sure to explore her new web site : www.artist-brettbarker.com <http://www.artistbrettbarker.com> .Look especially at the workshop section. We will be doinga variation of the Accidental Artist, as most of her work-shops are designed for the people in them. And under thereview category, I was struck by how the woman wrote herreview of Brett with many of the same phrases I would useto describe Brett's encouraging teaching style. The use ofexercises in many aspects of design and composition werevery helpful to bring ideas together for design possibilities. And we learned as much from our mistakes as from ourgood design elements. These smaller pieces can then beworked into a larger or more permanent piece.

Brett has incredible credentials including her for-mal education with a BFA as Magna Cum Laude at theUniversity of New Mexico and a BA with same honors atClaremont McKenna College in California. She has addi-tional education from the American University in Paris andfrom Colorado State University. Yeah! She has taught mul-tiple repeated workshops at other venues than Alegre inSanta Fe, such as in Houston at International Quilt Festivaland other places nationally such as Baton Rouge. She also

Imagine my misery trudging nine blocks through theUniversity of Colorado campus toward the Macky Auditoriumin the first snow of the season. I was cold, wet and miserable!

“Are Lyle Lovitt and John Hiatt going to be worth this misery?”,I grumbled to my husband. Well, imagine my delight when Ientered the Macky! Bright color fabulous art quilts by JudithTrager adorning all the walls! Needless to say, I was in heaven!Unfortunately my husband rushed me by (kicking a screaming)so we could get to our seats.

Half way through the show, I sneaked out to take a bet-ter look. Judith’s work at the Macky reminded me of my favoriteway to experience the seasons; it was perfect for a blustery snowyday! Titles like “Watermelon Summer”, “Plains Winter” and“Spring Prospect” couldn’t help but make me wish for spring!Full of raspberries, greens, blues and golds, this show is definite-ly colorful. Judith’s use of color produces a scrumptious feast foryour eyes. If you’ve never been to the Macky, you can’t appreci-ate how well Judith’s show hangs in their foyer gallery. The soar-ing minimalistic gothic architecture and bright white walls makethis art feel like it is floating. The “ohhhs” and ahhhhs” from peo-ple walking through were a testament to how wonderful Judith’swork shows in this venue.

Congrats on a wonderful show, Judith. I’m not surewhich was more exciting, viewing your work in this venue or mylengthy backstage chat with Lyle Lovitt himself. Hummmmm ...tough call!

If you go to see this show, I suggest you enter throughthe main central doors into the Macky Auditorium’s foyer to get

the full effect. Judith’s show runs in the Macky Auditorium on theUniversity of Colorado campus in Boulder through November4th, 2009.
