Dr.(Mrs.) Vineeta KamranPresident

Quality education is that which enlightens, liberates and sublimates the mind and the spirit. It sculpts character and fosters a global perspective. Enlightened and empowered children and youths can become the creative capital of the world. Promotion of positive values and a shared loyalty towards the creation of a united, progressive, liberated, peaceful, just and sustainable world must be t h e o b j e c t i v e s o f e d u c a t i o n i n t h e contemporary world.

We need such an education that enables our youngsters to develop an insight fu l , unprejudiced and ignited mind to perceive, accept and be tolerant of the diversity around them. The need of the hour is Education for Enlightenment, Emancipation, Edification and desirable Transformation. In the felicitous words of Swami Vivekananda,” Education is not the amount of information that is put into your brain and runs riot there, undigested, all your life. We must have life- building, man- making, character-making assimilation of ideas.”

Education for enlightenment is the panacea of these turbulent times. Such an education can be the most potent weapon to transform the world and illumine the tender minds and hearts of our children. Such children can radiate love and camaraderie wherever they go and can ensure a future not eclipsed by the vices of anarchy, hatred and destruction. True enlightenment can lead to excellence and instil a sense of discrimination and discernment. It can give our youngsters a righteous and fecund vision. They can thus be imbued with

the resourcefulness and prudence required for overcoming challenges and resolving conflicts. It facilitates self- discovery and a selflessness that connects us with all humanity. Enlightenment enables students to transmute knowledge into wisdom and think critically, liberally and rationally. Such students can act judiciously and innovatively and be the harbingers of constructive changes in the world.

According to Rabindranath Tagore, an enlightening and transcendental education gives man the unity of truth. As the world stands on the cusp of significant changes, the school must be seen as a microcosm of the inclusive and pluralistic society. Students must be enlightened on their cultural heritage and global issues of concern in this interconnected world. An innovative approach to education must bring about a confluence of the logical and the emotional, consciousness and conscientiousness, science and spirituality and the timeless and the contemporary.

I fi r m l y b e l i e v e t h a t e d u c a t i o n f o r enlightenment will give our beloved children the roots of idealism and the wings of independence. I hereby extend my best wishes to Mr. Nabarun De, Secretary West

stBengal Region and the hosts of the 61 Annual Conference of ASISC, Ram Mohan Mission High School and Central Modern School of Kolkata. I am sure under their dynamic leadership this conference will prove to be a landmark event in the illustrious history of the ASISC and blaze a new trail in the firmament of education.

Mr. K. V . VincentSecretary – Treasurer

As we set out to celebrate sixty one years of our existence as a body of forward looking educational practitioners, I welcome you to take a glance at the context in which we are, and prepare ourselves to march forward to an exciting future, with a firm belief in the value of learning, of the comprehensive role and scope of education and its fundamental role in society.

The advent of affordable Internet access across the world and the proliferation of the Cloud have together formed a catalyst of a new wave of classroom digitalisation and as a result the process of teaching – learning transactions has undergone a sea change in our institutions. The tools of the trade are changing- for instance, chunky desktops are replaced by sleek tablets that students can carry wherever they go-as technology power houses like Apple and Google continue to make great strides in digitalised education.

In the process, our education system has tend to prepare students to be employees rather than enlightened individuals who can use their passion and love to contribute to the welfare of

humanity. In order to achieve this goal we should focus more on developing the skills, the knowledge and the dispositions that will allow students to be responsible, contributing members of the community.

Education is essence of l i fe. Without educa t ion , a human be ing rema ins incomplete. If a man is not educated, he cannot live life fully. Education helps us to endorse the right path and become better human beings. But the beauty of true education is enlightenment of the human mind with spiritual and intellectual insight.

As we come together once again as progressive educationists let us realise that only an enlightened education can usher in development in a person, a society and a nation.

I cordially welcome you to the magnificent Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, Kolkata to grace our Annual Conference with your benign presence and share your insights as we deliberate on the theme chosen for the Conference – "Education for Enlightenment.'

Dr. G. ImmanuelChairman, CISCE

I am extremely glad to learn that the ASISC is hosting AGM-2018 for all the heads of schools affiliated to the CISCE, New Delhi in Kolkata. I feel honored to pen few lines of message wishing God's blessings for the success of the Conference.

The theme, "Education for Enlightenment " chosen for the forthcoming AGM -2018 of ASISC conference is highly relevant for the present times. Ellen G. White has said, "True education means more than a preparation for life that is now. It has to with the whole being and with the whole period of existence possible to man. It is the harmonious development of the physical, mental, and spiritual powers. And the object of education is "To restore in man the image of his Maker, to bring him back to the perfection in which he was created, to promote the development of body, mind, and soul, that the divine purpose in his creation might be realized."

Though many people score high marks and have numerous degrees, it doesn't mean they are educated. Because education is not just about holding a degree but how you implement your learning in your daily life. Every educated person is a literate but every literate is not an educated person. Being a literate means a person can read and write, but the aim of education is to make one 'a complete person'. It makes the person not only to read and write but also to think comprehensively and reason scientifically.

Education is the route to enlightenment and prosperity for individuals as well as nations. It gives spiritual or intellectual insights. Education therefore must give information or instruct people about life, intelligence and spirituality. I believe that today we need or what our children need is the enlightenment. They need to be enlightened spiritually and intellectually. We need to teach the children to find their passion and love through enlightenment. To enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one's family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one's own mind. If a man can control his mind, he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him."

The world in which we live today is different than it was just a few years ago. Due to globalization, the world and its

people, economies and cultures have become inextricably connected. This has impacted greatly on every aspect of our lives, and education is no exception. In this fast changing world, the students are expected to learn the skills such as, critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and innovation, collaboration and teamwork, technological literacy, communications and media literacy, skills for living in the world, ethics, civic responsibility, cross-cultural awareness, etc.

We could see that the entire globe is grappling today with an unbelievable rise in violence, discrimination , crime and depression and worrisome deterioration in the societal moral bearing, responsible citizenship as well as employability skills.

In view of this changing scenario, it is a challenge for the educators to train and prepare our students to rise above the evil forces and contribute for the peace and harmony of the world. True education should enable the students to have self-realization and God-realization in them- to live and work harmoniously with people. Such an education entails creating a positive school culture with a safe and caring environment, and with values and empathy for people and environment. The school climate should consist of shared values and relational trust, a powerful pedagogy and curriculum, high student motivation, a professional faculty culture, and partnerships with families and the community.

It is essential now to review & improvise our Education system to ensure a real change, because just we need to be aware as well to achieve the real meaning & purpose of education. Thus, we need to expand the horizon of our education system by inculcating basic Moral Values & Ethics amongst our students. I am hopeful that during the paper presentations, discussions, suggestions, we will be able to enlighten the erudite educators to improvise the education system in their respective schools. Let us resolve to make our students both good and smart.

I quote Lao Tzu's statement, "Knowing others is wisdom, knowing yourself is Enlightenment. Mastering others requires force; mastering self needs strength."

God bless

Mr. Gerry ArathoonChief Executive & Secretary, CISCE

The idea of Education and Enlighenment seems to me to be especially appropriate as the 61st Annual Conference of the ASISC is being held in Kolkata this year. Bengal was for a major part of our national history at the forefront of education and many enlightened thinkers from Bengal have been the flag bearers of the concept of education of enlightenment. The words of the national bard Rabindranath Tagore,”Where the mind is without fear, “is at the core of the concept of an enlightened education.

The term ‘enlightenment’ as a philosophy is not a new one. It can be traced back to the 18th century, as an answer to the rigid dogmas and thought processes which ruled society and social thought. In the 18th century this took the form of a philosophical debate that shook the bedrock of education in Europe and changed the landscape of education forever. In our country too, thinkers and educators sought to break old dogmas and systems to create and foster an enlightened system of education.

Today, not only in India, but also all over the world, our education system is aimed at providing society with and educated population or workforce, while at the same time ensuring the personal growth and happiness of the individual. The enlightenment philosophers who created a new way of viewing education, created the concept of ‘modern education’ which can be defined by three facets - progress, optimism and technical knowledge. Today, in India, we need to break away from simply relying on past educational theories and thinkers to define our current educational system. We need to rethink and reconstruct education so that it is fit for the 21st century and all the centuries to come.

The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination in its thrust to focus on Education of Enlightenment has, in the words of Immanuel Kant

realized that it must ‘dare to know.’ The Council has believed in ever moving forward to create ever Increasing circles of thought which will yoke together the aspects of creative expression and knowledge and what has come to be known as “Performance Management,” i.e. to ensure effective, efficient and qualitative teaching and education. It seeks to enhance the teaching- learning experience by setting standards of quality education and at the same time widening the ambit of education through introduction of subjects and disciplines which are interdisciplinary and progressive. The Council has consistently tried to tailor learning patterns to the changing needs of society. By bringing together all the stakeholders on the same platform, the CISCE seeks to make enlightened education a reality rather than just a theory. This has become a vital necessity not only for sociological and economic reasons, but also because we need to save our future generation from the quagmire of negativity and rigidity which surrounds us today.

In conclusion I would like to congratulate all the delegates of the ASISC who are our partners in forging an enlightened, progressive education system and thus an enlightened society. I end with the immortal words of Tagore, one of the most enlightened thinkers of our nation, which remind us of the task before us:

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high - Where knowledge is free - Where the world has not been broken up into fragments - By narrow domestic walls - Where words come out from the depth of truth - Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection - Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way - Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit - Where the mind is led forward by thee - Into ever widening thought and action

Into that heaven of freedom my Father, let my country awake
