Commissioning – the concept
Planning for the year and letting local services know so they can be prepared
Setting contracts around what will be required and standards around quality
There is a degree of continuity with commissioning, but each year there is an opportunity for service redesign and innovation
Clinical solutions for financial problems - Mission Impossible

Opportunities and risks• Introduction of new evidence-based interventions - equitable and affordable• Sustainable approach to the NHS - keeping health services ‘free at the point of delivery’• Opportunity for clinicians to directly influence pathway design, have a central role rather than just on the edge… hopefully this will be a good thing• Opportunity to bring primary and secondary care closer together and on more equal terms• There is a steady stream of new technologies and not all can be afforded within current budget
