Humanities’ Faculty

From September 2015, the Humanities’ Faculty comprises of the three main subject areas of

Geography, History and Religious Studies, in addition to Personal, Social and Health

education. At KS5 Politics is also popular a subject offered by the faculty. The staff are

dedicated professionals, committed to raising standards and improving still further the

quality of teaching and learning.

The Humanities are successful and vibrant subjects and are popular with the students at all

Key Stages. KS4 and KS5 examination results are consistently very good across all subject

areas, exceeding national floor standards in all areas and at all Key Stages. Each subject

currently follows the AQA syllabi for GCSE, AS and A2 levels.

Religious Studies: At GCSE students follow the AQA Religious Studies A course and study

both the Philosophy and Christian Ethics units. At A Level students study Philosophy and

Ethics including topics such as Situation Ethics, Abortion and Euthanasia, Psychology of

Religion, Libertarianism, Determinism and Freewill, as well as Religious Experience.

Sociology has recently been introduced at Key Stage 5 and students are currently able to

study this at AS Level. Sociology will also be offered at A2 Level from September 2014

therefore the ability to deliver this is desirable. Students study units in Family and Education

with Research Methods.

Each Humanities subject is currently delivered through streamed groups in Years 7&8 whilst

mixed ability is found in Year 9 and Key stage 4. The faculty is housed in a suite of 6

dedicated teaching rooms. These teaching rooms offer a high quality learning environment

for every pupil. Every room has reliable wireless access and is equipped with an Interactive

Whiteboard. The Humanities Faculty also has access to 2 sets of bookable class laptops.

Fieldwork and trips form an integral part of the curriculum in each of the Humanities

subjects and each subject area makes a valuable contribution to the enrichment of every

student across the academy.

Monitor and analyse student progress, making interventions to remove barriers to learning.

Ensure appropriate communication to parents on the progress of students.

Ensure the departmental complies with relevant Health and Safety regulations.

Job Description - Teacher

The following items are included in the professional duties which a school teacher may be required to perform under the reasonable direction of the Principal.

1. Teaching

Having regard to the curriculum for the school:

a. planning and preparing courses and lessons; b. teaching, according to their educational needs, the pupils assigned to her/him,

including the setting and marking of work to be carried out by the pupils in school and elsewhere;

c. assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils;

d. organising and participating in extra-curricular activities.

2. Other activities

a. Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils assigned to her/him;

b. providing guidance and advice to pupils on educational and social matters and on their further education and future careers, including information about sources of more expert advice on specific questions; making relevant records and reports;

c. making records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils; d. communicating and consulting with the parents of pupils as directed by the Head; e. attending assemblies, registering the attendance of pupils and supervising pupils,

whether these duties are to be performed before, during or after school sessions; f. communicating and co-operating with persons or bodies outside the school; g. participating in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above; h. contributing, wherever appropriate, to the wider life of the school.

3. Assessment and reports

Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils.

4. Appraisal

Participating in arrangements made by the ATB for the appraisal of her/his performance and that of other teachers.

5. Further training and development

a. Reviewing from time to time her/his methods of teaching and programmes of work; b. participating in arrangements for her/his further training and professional

development as a teacher.

6. Educational methods

Advising and co-operating with the Head and other teachers on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment and pastoral arrangements.

7. Discipline, health and safety

Maintaining good order and discipline among the pupils and safeguarding their health and safety both when they are authorised to be on the school premises and when they are engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere.

8. Staff meetings

Participating in meetings at the school which relate to the curriculum for the school or the administration or organisation of the school, including pastoral arrangements.

9. Cover

Supervising and so far as practicable teaching any pupils whose teacher is not available to teach them.

10. Public examinations

Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and in assessing pupils for the purposes of such examinations; recording and reporting such assessments; and participating in arrangements for pupils' presentation for and supervision during such examinations in accordance with both internal and external regulations.

11. Management

a. Contributing to the selection for appointment and professional development of other teachers and support staff, including the induction and assessment of new teachers and initial teacher training;

b. co-ordinating or managing the work of other teachers; c. taking such part as may be required of her/him in the review, development and

management of activities relating to the curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the school.

12. Administration

Participating in administrative and organisational tasks related to such duties as are described above, including the management or supervision of persons providing support for the teachers in the school and the ordering and allocation of equipment and materials.

13. General

Adhering to the policies of the school and the ATB, as published in the Staff handbook, in particular policies relating to the safeguarding of children.
