Red Cardinal, the Illinois state bird.Bird FactsSo what do we know about birds? [Wait for answers] Well, birds are the only animals that have feathers. Birds lay eggs in their nests. All birds have wings, some birds can even fly. Birds are warm-blooded animals, they can live in the freezing cold or the desert heat but, their bodies are built to remain the same temperature all the time, just like you! Birds have two legs, too! Some have webbed feet, some have long toes to sit on branch. You know how many different kinds of birds there are in the world? [Waits for answers] There are over 9,00 different kinds that come in all shapes and sizes. Does anyone know what kind of bird that is? [Waits for answers] That is a Red Cardinal! Emperor PenguinA penguin is actually a bird. Penguins cannot fly. They use their flippers to swim underwater. Penguins eat fish. Penguins are actually clumsy on land so they waddle and slide on their bellies. Not all penguins are found in cold climates, some are found warmer climates. Ruby-throated HummingbirdHummingbirds are another type of bird. They are the tinniest bird in the world and weigh as much as a penny. [holds a penny and asks] Has anyone ever held a penny? [waits for answers] Pass around the penny. See thats what a hummingbird actually weighs. Hummingbirds flap their wings very fast, they can hover in mid air. They are the only bird that can fly up and down, left and right. They can even fly upside down! Hummingbirds have such long beaks so they can drink nectar. Nectar is a sugary liquid produced by flowers. Hummingbirds love to drink it. That is a Ruby-throated Hummingbird.5Ducks have beaks, known as billsDucks have webbed feet which helps them swimThey like to eat grass, insects, small fish, and snailsSometimes they dive their heads in the water to get food.

These are ducks. Ducks have beaks but, we call them bills. Ducks have webbed feet that help them swim. Ducks love to eat grass, insects, small fish, and snails. They like to dive underwater to get their food. These are Mallard ducks! The brown duck is a female duck and the green duck is a male duck.
