WHAT IS BIOMIMICRY ?“The biggest innovations of the 21st century will

be at the intersection of biology and technology. A new era is beginning.”

Biomimicry is an approach to innovation that seeks sustainable solutions to human challenges by COPYING NATURE’S time-tested patterns and strategies

WHY BIOMIMICRY ?

Humans are clever, creating sustainability problems to the future generation.

Fortunately the solutions are around us.

The core idea is COPYING nature’s (plants, animals, microbes) mechanism, which is solving solving many problems. This is the secret

to survival.

BIOMIMICRY in concrete technology PRODUCT : Self Healing Concrete : The concrete which has

the ability to repair quickly and effectively on its own.

Cementitious materials mimic the natural processes reducing the damages in concrete.

Page 6: Biomimicry in Concrete technology

Generally cracks occur in the concrete.

The cracks can be healed by the self healing concrete by imitating the natural system.

Mechanism:

Crack formation Strengthened concrete

Sealing of the cracksConcrete +carbon

microfibres & micro capsules

Absorption of moisture

Softening & growing of fibred concrete

Differences from existing normal concrete

Reduction in the work of repairing of the structure either manually or mechanically.

Reduction in repair costs over the lifetime of the structure.

The strength increases by 60%. The life time if the concrete structure

increases.

Page 10: Biomimicry in Concrete technology

Challenges solved

Reduction in the resource usage from the manufacturing of traditional concrete.

Reduction in the energy consumption of traditional concrete production.

Page 11: Biomimicry in Concrete technology

The amount of healing agent needed should be minimized in order to become economically competitive with currently existing repair techniques.

Thus the self healing concrete is highly superior and advantageous than the existing normal concrete.

This forms vital role of this special concrete in upcoming days.
