ABOUT AMERICAN RENEWABLES, LLC• Focused on developing, owning and operating utility-scale

biomass energy facilities– Headquartered in Boston, MA

• Partnership between BayCorp Holdings, Energy Management and Tyr Energy– Principals have a long and successful history of developing and

operating energy facilities

• Developed Nacogdoches Power project in East Texas– Sold to Southern Power in October 2009

– Developing Gainesville Renewable Energy Center

BENEFITS OF BIOMASS POWER GENERATIONRenewable Uses a renewable fuel that is carbon neutral

Economic Development

Large, positive economic impact in the local community; 700 permanent jobs created in the region

Reliable Minimum 90% availability

Flexible Can use a wide variety of wood fuels and potentially additional opportunity fuels (e.g. storm debris)

Price Predictability

Predictable pricing, customers protected from natural gas price volatility and cost of carbon controls

GREC POTENTIAL BIOMASS FUEL SOURCES• Forestry Residues

– Slash and cull trees– Pre-commercial thinnings

• Wood Processing Residue– Round-offs, end cuts– Sawdust, shavings– Reject lumber

• Other Waste Materials– Discarded pallets and packaging

wood• Urban Wood Residue

– Wood & brush from land clearing, tree trimming & landscaping

• Opportunity Fuels– Storm debris– Diseased trees

•Located in some of the highest pine densities in the Southeast

•Many pulp mills located in areas of lesser pine density

• Can draw urban wood waste from the Cities of Gainesville, Jacksonville and areas of Tallahassee

• Metro areas have combined population of over 2 million

PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT

• Minimum standards for forest-produced biomass– No stumps, except from urban land clearing

– No exotic species unless part of forest restoration

– Nutrient retention on-site

– Compliance with FL Division of Forestry Best Management Practices

• Bonus payment for participation in Forest Stewardship incentive Program

Raising the bar: we are the only forest products user in the region to agree to such strict standards

ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDY -OVERVIEW• Economic impact study performed by FSU professor

– Utilized IMPLAN. Examined impacts in 23 counties within a 75-mile radius of the facility

• Key assumptions used in the economic impact model:– Initial construction and employment impact:

• Capital/labor investment of $46 million– Over 400 jobs during nearly 3 year construction period

• 80 forestry and trucking jobs– Permanent employment

• 44 full-time employees at the plant• 160 forestry and trucking jobs, associated with fuel supply

OPPORTUNITY FOR BIOMASS POWER IN THE U.S. • Today, the U.S is heavily dependent on fossil fuels

– Coal, natural gas and oil account for ~78% of U.S. energy production

• Large Resource Availability• Proven Technology / Baseload Generation• Other Renewable Resources

– Wind and solar resources are intermittent in nature.– Limited by availability of resource to specific geographic areas

CHALLENGES• Lack of consistent renewable energy policy

– No Renewable Portfolio Standard – No carbon legislation– Limited / uncertain financial incentives

• Cumbersome approval process– Often lengthy and cumbersome approval process

• Opposition– Vocal minority with incomplete information– Entrenched interests
