Manufactured com- mercially since 1989 pyrolysis oil is hardly new, but only now is it being recognized as a versatile fuel that of- fers a simple solution to achieving renew- able energy targets by replacing oil or gas in many industrial and commercial applica- tions. World capacity doubled in 2014-15, and will double again when plants currently under construction are brought on-stream. It is currently being used in the food and chemicals industry in the US, to replace oil in boilers to provide heat to hospi- tals and other buildings in the US, to replace oil in CHP and district energy systems in Fin- land and Sweden, and even to replace natural gas to make steam for the dairy industry in the Netherlands. Pyrolysis oil is advantageous as it protects against the price volatility com- monly seen with fossil oil, and also protects against threatened supply of natural gas not uncommon in Eu- rope. These are not the only markets. En- syn/Honeywell UOP has succeeded in up- grading pyrolysis oil in existing refineries to make green gasoline and diesel, and pro- poses this to be a key market. Pyrolysis oil is a leading contender as a maritime biofuel, and as a feedstock in the chemicals industry. It is twice as energy dense as wood pellets, a ma- jor competitive advan- tage in long distance transport. It requires no major infrastructure like solid biofuels, just stainless steel tanks and pipes (due to its low pH), and an off- the-shelf pyrolysis oil burner. It contains only traces of sulfur and thus SO2 emissions are insignificant. If you want to find out about pyrolysis oil production, markets, supply potential, and more, take a day and at- tend this unique World Bioenergy Associa- tion conference on Nov 22. See the producers present their technol- ogies, hear experts talk about upcoming maritime fuel testing, find out about modu- lar plant design, find out where the growing supply will come from. Register by way of the WBA website at www. worldbioenergy.org. The Nov 23 plant tour is limited to 22 people and is only available to conference attendees, so register for the con- ference now. www.worldbioenergy. org BIOMASS in Bosnia and Herzegovina presented at RENEXPO BiH E xperts, Investors and Industry from 15 European coun- tries meeting for the 3rd time their Bosnian counterparts 9th - 10th of November in Sa- rajevo.
