Earth as an Island
All organisms on Earth share a limited resource base and depend on it for
their long-term survival. To protect these resources, we need to understand how humans interact
with the biosphere.
Hunters and Gatherers Adapted to Their Environments
• They hunted animals and gathered plants for food
• If there was no food they would move• They depended on natural environment for
shelter• They lived in caves and rock shelters
–Made shelters out of: branches, plant fibers, animal skins
Spreading Through the World
Early Humans=Small Bands-Several families lived together-30 people in a small band-The men hunted & fished-The women gathered food (berries and nuts
from plants), and cared for the children
Fire500,000 years ago-Ancient people learned to make and control fire
–Provided heat and light–Protection from animals–Cooking–Temper (harden) tools
Development of Technology• All of the ways people apply knowledge, tools,
and inventions to meet their needs.• 2 million years ago- stone tools for cutting, storage
bags, and stone hand axes were created.• Hunting bows made of wood• Flint spearheads and metal tools Used for:
– hunting– Building shelter
The results equaled control over environments and a better way of life.
Stone Age Artifacts
The Green Revolution The green revolution was an effort in
the mid-twentieth century to increase global food production through
modern plant breeding and agricultural techniques.
Over the last 50 years, the green revolution has helped world food
production double.

AgricultureChallenges for the FutureWhile increasing world food supplies, modern agriculture has created ecological challenges. For example:–Monoculture leads to problems with insect pests and diseases.
–Finding enough water for irrigation is difficult.

Industrial Growth and Urban Development
Human society and its impact on the biosphere were transformed by the Industrial Revolution, which added machines and factories to
civilization.

Industrial Growth and Urban Development
The energy to power machinery comes mostly from fossil fuels—coal, oil, and natural gas.
Suburban growth consumes farmland and stresses native plants and animals.
