Mientras ambos se formaban como cocineros, Gastn junto a Astrid, de origen alemn, fascinada por la cultura peruana, deciden hacer una vida en el Per. As, en 1994 se fund el restaurante que hoy lleva su nombre, y con l, uno de los primeros restaurantes de alta cocina peruana.Han pasado ms de 17 aos desde que Astrid&Gastn abri sus puertas en Lima, el esfuerzo de todo este tiempo ha valido la pena, y en el 2012 el restaurante fue incluido como nmero 35 en la lista de los 50 mejores restaurantes del mundo de S. Luego estudio en la Universidad Nacional de Trujillo, donde obtiene el ttulo de Bachiller en Ingeniera Qumica y luego el ttulo de Ingeniero qumico. Obtiene una Maestra en Direccin Universitaria en la Universidad de los Andes, Colombia y una Maestra en Administracin de la Educacin en la Universidad de Lima. En 1982 fue secretario general del APRA y, ms adelante, designado candidato a las elecciones presidenciales. En 1985 result elegido presidente de la Repblica ejerciendo su mandato hasta 1990, en que fue relevado por Alberto Fujimori. Dirigente de carcter socialdemcrata, fue promotor de la unidad latinoamericana enfrentndose al Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI). Con la llegada del rgimen de Fujimori, tuvo que huir de las manos de un comando enviado para presuntamente eliminarlo, casi fue obligado a dejar el pas y conminarse en la pasividad del exilio.
