BIOREMEDIATION

Sewage and other types of polluted water consist of organic matter which is the most troublesome component and responsible for air, water and soil pollution due to its decomposition under anaerobic conditions (devoid of oxygen).

If this organic matter is decomposed with the help of Biological products to

remove the pollution is called “BIOREMEDIATION”. These products supply live bacteria of aerobic or anaerobic and facultative in nature to the organic waste to decompose it into simpler forms by understated biochemical decomposition reactions:

1. Aerobic Decomposition: in presence of free oxygen (provided by aerators)

according to Eq. 1.1:

Aerobic bacteria

Organics + O2 → New Cells + CO2 + H2O + Energy (1.1)

2. Anoxic / Anaerobic Decomposition: in absence of free oxygen but consume combined form of oxygen present in NO3 (nitrates) and SO4 (sulfates) available in the solid waste material according to Eqs. 1.2 & 1.3 respectively:

Anaerobic bacteria Organic Matter + NO3 → New Cells + CO2 + N2 + Energy (1.2)

Sulfur Reducing Bacteria (SRB) Organic Matter + SO4 → New Cells + CO2+ H2S +Energy (1.3) (This is the reaction producing odour because of generation & emission of H2S gas)

Anaerobic decomposition is the main source of odour generation. Hydrogen sulfide produced is oxidized by aerobic bacteria in presence of atmospheric oxygen to sulfuric acid (H2SO4) or elemental sulfur by Sulfur Oxidizing Bacteria as shown in the following reactions 1.4 & 1.5 respectively: Aerobic bacteria H2S + 2O2 → 2H2SO4 (1.4) Sulfur oxidizing bacteria (SOB) H2S → So + 2 H++ 2 e- (1.5)

3. Facultative Decomposition: both reactions of aerobic and anaerobic type take place with the help of facultative bacteria

ABR (ANOXIC BIOREMEDIATION) TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY WITH PERSNICKETY® 713

ABR (Anoxic Bioremediation) treatment of sewage with PERSNICKETY®

713 is a proven technology since early eighties. This biological product is sold under different trade names by M/s Syneco

systems in different parts of the world as stated underneath (Appendix A): - SB 7000 – when M/s Syneco systems sell directly to end users - Bio Act – when it is sold to the sugar beet processing industry and for all

marketing in United Kingdom - Persnickety® 713 – when the product is sold by the Agents or distributors

This product is in use in various continents of the world such USA, UK, Middle

East, India and South Africa to tackle the understated pollution and operational/maintenance problems with tremendous success:

- Odour generation and emission in water body, sewerage networks, septic

tanks, solid wastes and any polluted water body - Over loading of STPs - Excessive Algae and Hyacinth propagation in open drains, ponds, lakes,

river and sea - Sludge/sediments accumulation in any above-mentioned water body - Red tide in the oceans - Safe disposal of solid wastes including garbage and horticulture waste - Industrial wastes excluding metal and petroleum industries This technology has achieved high appreciation and treated as the best friend

of human and environment due to its unique capability to control generation and emission of highly toxic and health hazardous hydrogen sulfide gas, the main odorous component of polluted water and solids.

PERSNICKETY® 713 is a precisely balanced blend of naturally occurring,

Strict and Facultative Anaerobic Live bacterial strains that start dispersing immediately as diluted in water.

This is highly Effective Biological Product to control odor generation

and emission and to reduce TSS, BOD and Oil/Grease accumulation in sewage/polluted water and solids. These specific characteristics of bacterial strains of Persnickety 713 make it more accessible to any sort of septic environment in sewerage networks, water bodies and solid wastes.

Due to the removal of reduced components (which require dissolved

oxygen for oxidation) BOD in sewage reduces significantly. Due to dissociation of organic matter and its consumption in regeneration process, TSS and sludge content reduce tremendously during bioremediation with Persnickety® 713.

STAGES OF TREATMENT WITH PERSNICKETY® 713

Persnickety® 713 concentrate when injected in wastewater, it starts working in following stages as shown in pictures 1.1 to 1.6: Stage 1 – Dispersion: All facultative and anaerobic bacterial strains in liquid product are present in dormant state or sleeping mode. As it disperses in water on dilution bacterial strains start converting into active state immediately that means the awakening of bacteria starts (Picture 1.1) Stage 2 - Start occupying the spaces between Sludge Flocs: Persnickety® 713 bacterial strains start occupying the spaces between sludge flocks and in turn loosening of the large sludge flocs starts that results in further breaking them into smaller pieces in next stage of Decomposition (Picture 1.2) Stage 3 - Assimilation or Decomposition of Sludge Flocs: In this stage Live bacterial cells of Persnickety®713 start decomposing the accumulated sludge flocs and large organic molecules into simpler one such as proteins, fatty acids, carbohydrates so the natural inhabitants of sewage and 713 bacterial strains under propagation can easily consume them for their vital activities and regeneration (Picture 1.3)

Stage 4 - Creating Favorable Environment for the Growth of Natural Inhabitants of sewage: Bacteria present in Persnickety®713 create favorable environment for the growth and propagation of unicellular organisms such as stalked ciliates, amoeba, paramecium, flagellates etc (natural inhabitants of sewage) in following ways:

a) By removing most troublesome product hydrogen sulfide from sewage which consumes a large part of oxygen for its oxidation in sulfate

b) Decomposing organic matter means reducing suspended solids from sewage

c) Some of the strains of 713 are Photosynthetic in nature means they consume CO2 produced during decomposition of organic matter (Eq. 1.7) and release free oxygen in system, thus a creating growth promoting atmosphere

Sunlight CO2 + 6H2O → C6 H12O6 + O2 (1.7) Photosynthetic Bacteria

d) Increasing dissolved oxygen level in wastewater indicated by decreased level of BOD content

e) Unicellular organisms start increasing in numbers (Picture 1.4)

Stage 5 - Regeneration of Bacterial strains of Persnickety® 713: Due to favorable environment different bacterial strains present in Persnickety 713 start regenerating that means reproducing by budding and binary fission (Picture 1.5)

Stage 6 - Profuse Growth of Bacterial strains of Persnickety®713: Up to day 7 bacterial strains of 713 grow completely in every corner of aeration basins by removing any clogging of sludge or scum in the system (Picture 1.6)

MAJOR GAINS WITH ABR TREAMENT WITH PERSNICKETY® 713 1. Odour emission: A peculiar rotten egg odor emission from sewage or

polluted water in any water body such as pond, lake, river or sea or solid waste and sediments is due to the generation of highly toxic gaseous pollutant Hydrogen sulfide (H2S). It has extremely low threshold concentration (0.0047 ppm) therefore can be felt at extremely low concentration.

Odour emission ceases completely or greatly reduced within 2 hours of Persnickety® 713 dosing at the dosing point and in few days its generation is controlled completely from the site and its vicinity according to Eq. 1.6. It is proved in all studies carried out in Delhi, Mumbai, Kuwait, UK and USA and certified by the Authorities.

2. Toxicity: Hydrogen sulfide is highly toxic and health hazardous gas. “Its

toxicity is comparable to toxicity of hydrogen cyanide”. So this health hazard would be removed completely from the environment after Bioremediation with Persnickety® 713.

3. Pleasant Working Environment: As odor control is achieved, the working

environment in complete water/wastewater system including networks, pumping stations, sewage Treatment plants, ponds, lakes and solid wastes dumping sites becomes pleasant for staff working at these facilities.

4. Corrosion and health hazard: Hydrogen sulfide oxidizes to sulfuric acid in

presence of atmospheric oxygen and causes corrosion to the concrete structures, metal surfaces, other appurtenances and electrical, mechanical equipment according to under mentioned chemical reaction, Eq. 1.8:

Aerobic H2S + 2 O2 → H2SO4 (1.8) Bacteria

The corrosion of these structures and equipment is drastically controlled. The use of Persnickety® 713 protects concrete civil works the corrosion and prolongs the life of the system by 25% to 50%.

5. Cost Effective: No extra construction or any change in infrastructure of any system is required. The Bioremediation product can be dosed directly in the existing structure of open drains, any water body and sewerage networks thus it is a Cost effective and very competitive process.

6. Secondary Treatment in STP: Even low levels of highly toxic H2S can

adversely affect the growth and activity of biological life present in Activated Sludge, Persnickety® 713 greatly reduces this effect and increases efficiency of secondary treatment. In simplified terms, the organic material available for decomposition serves more as "healthy food" for activity and regeneration of naturally occurring bacteria in activated sludge and bacterial strains of Persnickety® 713 than a "sick" biomass, which needs higher Dissolved Oxygen (DO) for digestion. As the sludge is detoxified it becomes an available food source for 713 bacteria and the quantity of sludge is reduced by about 40%.

ABR Technology 2009

9 JM EnviroTechnologies Pvt. Ltd.

7. Increase in DO level – Bacterial strains of Persnickety® 713 increase DO level in sewage due to removal of reduced compounds (require more DO for oxidation) such as H2S and FOG and bring to significantly high level of DO i.e. up to 4.0 mg/L without operation of aerators. Thus keeping sewage in fresh condition.

8. Energy Saver - PERSNICKETY® 713 acts as an Energy Saver because

maintains a satisfactory level of DO and therefore aerators, which are consuming high power can be stopped. As it was proved in various STPs of Delhi. Aerators are not required for bioremediation of sewage with Persnickety® 713. They can be easily replaced by agitators, which help to prevent the deposition of accumulated sludge pockets and keep the solids completely suspended in the liquid. One agitator would be enough for mixing 50 - 60 m2 area of aeration basin. It shall work intermittently just 2 to 3 hrs in day. Thus tremendous savings in terms of Energy Consumption

9. Oil and Grease Control - PERSNICKETY® 713 also helps to control animal

and vegetable fats, oils and greases (FOG). These compounds are exceptionally stable and require extended time for breakdown. Certain members of 713 speed up the process of oil degradation and converting them in easily accessible simpler fatty acids such as propionic, butyric acids, glycerol etc. Biological life present in Activated sludge can digest these simpler compounds far more readily for their growth and propagation. This benefit will usually be seen in domestic plants with normal domestic FOG loadings. FOG buildup is almost always accompanied by high H2S dissolved in sewage, which inhibits the growth and activity of organic decomposing bacteria and will greatly impede a process, which, without external help, is very slow and results in inefficient decomposition of organic matter. Since live bacteria of Persnickety® 713 remove 100% H2S and speed up the process of FOG digestion.

10. Improved Sludge and Secondary Effluent Quality – Normally in a span of

10 days continuous dosing Bacterial strains of Persnickety® 713 spread all over in plant and maintain proper oxidation of solids thus producing good quality of sludge, that settles down easily in Secondary clarifiers and in turn produces improved quality of effluent having major pollutants TSS and BOD within permissible limits laid down by Pollution Control Agencies.

11. Algae Removal from Clarifiers, lagoons and any water body – Growth of

green algae on notches of secondary clarifiers in STP or water surface covered with hyacinth in a pond, lake or river is a very common scene, this is because of high Nutrient (Nitrogen & Phosphorus) Content in wastewater. In this condition oxygen dissolved in water reduces tremendously in an ocean such condition turns into a disaster called “RED TIDE” resulting in the death of aquatic life. But Persnickety® 713 bacterial strains use nutrients for producing new active colonies of bacteria during regeneration so they are not available for the growth of algae and hyacinth and slowly green color vegetation disappears from the water body.

ABR Technology 2009

10 JM EnviroTechnologies Pvt. Ltd.

12. Odor control at sludge drying beds and solid wastes disposal sites &

flies/mosquitoes propagation – Since sludge produced is easily digested, no odor is generated at sludge drying beds and propagation of flies at these sites is eliminated. Similarly if garbage and horticulture wastes are treated with Persnickety® 713, the solid wastes dumping sites can be kept free from odours and flies/mosquitoes propagation due to proper oxidation of organic matter present in the solid waste.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

HYACINTH AND ALGAE CONTROL IN LAKES WITH ABR TREATMENT Water hyacinth (Eichhornia Crassipes) is a free floating water plant listed as

one of the most productive plants on earth and is considered as one of the world's worst aquatic plants. Water hyacinth is native to all water bodies having high nutrient contents due to sewage discharge.

A common bacterial cell is represented by C5H7O2N that means essential

elements required to form a cell are CHON and P is required to form energy rich compounds such as ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate). Thus high N & P contents are removed from any polluted water body in regeneration of new bacterial cells of Persnickety 713 and are no more available for Hyacinth growth. The remains of Hyacinth such as leaves & branches to fulfill the requirement of C, thus the root causes of hyacinth growth would be removed from a lake as shown in following pictures:

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS OF

ELM TRADING COMPANY

ABR Technology 2009

24 JM EnviroTechnologies Pvt. Ltd.

In a span of 23 years M/s Syneco Systems, ELM Trading Company and associates have established under stated facts for the benefits of mankind and society: 1. Increasing Treatment Capacity of Wastewater Treatment Plants: the

capacity of Jahra WWTP from 67,000 to 140,000 m3/day in Kuwait and many others in Delhi & Mumbai in India

2. Reducing Pollution Level in Raw Sewage Discharged to the Sea: latest project of Mishref Pumping Station going on in Kuwait

3. Saving of Ground water: to maintain greenery in a city or any domestic or

industrial establishment such as resorts, hotels etc. a huge quantity of ground water is extracted through tube wells which reduces the water table and imposes threat to ground water reserves. We have a technology to save ground water by converting sewage into a useful source of irrigation water after bioremediation with Persnickety® 713.

4. Saving of Energy: Bioremediation with Persnickety® 713 does not require

any aeration hence sewage or polluted water can be treated with aeration, a great measure for energy saving.

5. Revenue from Tourism: ponds, lakes and rivers are the major structures

must be used for rain water harvesting but commonly these are used as sink for the discharge of wastewater. Due to this reason the water surfaces of these natural water bodies remain covered with thick growth of Algae and hyacinth. Such conditions reduce public attraction for these sites and in turn affect the tourism and revenue generated from these activities. These loses can be overcome by Bioremediation with Persnickety® 713.

6. Solid Waste Management: solid waste containing garbage and horticulture

waste when start decomposing in the environment becomes a stinking site and give shelter to flies and mosquitoes carrier of various diseases. In normal practice this waste is burnt means another source of air pollution. Bioremediation with Persnickety 713 is the solution of this problem as well as give you a useful material “Compost” out of wastes.

NOTE

If any of the Governmental Authorities of India wants to visit Kuwait to get a feel of ABR Treatment and its capability that can be arranged.

They are most welcome to Kuwait
