When the lake drained, winds blew sand from the dry lake bed to form sand dunes. The remainder of the area is River Red Gum and Black Box dominated shallow freshwater marsh and freshwater meadow, home to many native bird species and is a known eagle nesting site. TONGALAA beautiful town steeped in history. GIRGARREGirgarre is a tight-knit community of friendly locals that offers free camping facilities and amenities and a not-to-be-missed monthly farmers market. The Gargarro Soundshell, an outdoor performance space has brought a new sense of life and a growing event program to the township.

STANHOPEStanhope became the first ‘Legendairy’ capital of Australia in 2015, a nod to the Fonterra milk processing factory which features a large mural of photos of the history of the town and it’s dairy background. The town also boasts the station park arts space, two unique galleries, a country music club, a pub and other places to eat, drink and shop. Check out the rail trail or the photo display on the side of the Business Centre. Hometown to Australia’s 18th Prime Minister, Sir John Mc Ewen.

RUSHWORTHSurrounded by the significant Ironbark Forest and historic goldfields, Rushworth retains much of the charm and character of the 1853 Gold Rush Era – reflected in its National Trust classified streetscape; one of the most impressive in rural Victoria. Rushworth is surrounded by scenic walks and historical markers, and a short drive to Waranga Basin.

ROCHESTERLocated on the banks of the Campaspe River, Rochester is home to cycling legend Sir Hubert Opperman and the renowned Rochy Sports Museum. The museum showcases a vast collection of sporting memorabilia and private tours are available. Impressive Silo Art, Iddles lane and the murals offer those interested in art a great array to view. Country style pubs and cafes offer great food and hospitality.

COLBINABBINColbo is a great destination for a Sunday drive. You can’t miss the amazing Tim Bowtell painted silos celebrating the town’s history. Tim’s work also adorns the side wall of the newly renovated pub. The pub is so popular, you need to book ahead. The Colbinabbin General Store offers coffee and food as well as a range of local honey, preserves, textiles, crafts and cards. The wineries are a stones’ throw from here with great wines and some offer food, music and great vistas.

LOCKINGTONA vibrant farming community famous for its town channel network that features the giant ‘Locky Ness Monster’. The Living Heritage Complex has an amazing collection of farm equipment and pays homage to the late Kevin Sarre, the well know shearing champion. The park and pump track are a great way to while away a few hours with the kids. If you like ice cream and waffles, then you need to visit Ciurleo’s. The community owned pub is a great spot to meet the locals.

TORRUMBARRYTorrumbarry is home to one of the largest weirs in Australia. This heritage listed weir and lock chamber maintains the height of the Murray River, creating optimal conditions. It is the starting point for the annual Southern 80 Ski Race and a popular spot for fishing and recreational water activities.

GUNBOWERGunbower is best known as the gateway to the largest inland island in Australia – Kow Swamp. Surrounding Gunbower Island is a series of meandering creeks and waterways, offering a retreat for nature lovers, fishing and kayaking. Gunbower also is steeped in significant history, with local aboriginal tribes living in harmony off the rich lands for thousands of years.
