Summary
William Bill Henry Gates is one of the most successful entrepreneurs of the world. He is able to
run a successful and a profitable entrepreneurship for many years and even today. Microsoft co-
founder and chief executive officer Bill Gates became the wealthiest man in America and one ofthe most influential personalities on the ever-evolving information superhighway and computer
industry.
Bill Gates became the most famous businessman in recent history. His supreme accomplishment
was to design and develop innovative software for the personal computer, making PC's
universally popular machines in user friendly language, communicating with it. Make it easier to
work with the computer and the more accessible and widely used the computer becomes the
Gates' gift for software design.
His vision and dedication are the key factors of being a successful entrepreneur and these skillswere present in Bill Gates from the beginning. He has got the skills to identify the most suitable
employee for recruitment. The success of Microsoft is the true example of the entrepreneurial
skills of Bill Gates. The success story of Bill Gates is highly motivating for all the upcoming
entrepreneurs. His hard work, dedication and self-confidence helped him to earn everything he
has.
Aside from being the most famous businessman of the late 1990s, Gates also has distinguished
himself as a humanitarian (someone working for charity). Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation,
focuses on helping to improve health care and education for children around the world. Being the
richest man in the world has also enabled Gates to create one of the world's largest charitablefoundations.

INTRODUCTION:William Henry "Bill" Gates III (born October 28, 1955) is an American business magnate,
philanthropist, author, and is chairman ofMicrosoft, the software company he founded with PaulAllen. He is consistently ranked among the world's wealthiest people and was the wealthiest
overall from 1995 to 2009, excluding 2008, when he was ranked third. During his career at
Microsoft, Gates held the positions ofCEO and chief software architect, and remains the largest
individual shareholder, with more than 8 percent of the common stock. He has also authored or
co-authored several books.
Gates is one of the best-known entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution. Although he
is admired by many, a number of industry insiders criticize his business tactics, which they
consider anti-competitive, an opinion which has in some cases been upheld by the courts. In the
later stages of his career, Gates has pursued a number of philanthropic endeavors, donating largeamounts of money to various charitable organizations and scientific research programs through
the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, established in 2000.
Gates stepped down as chief executive officer of Microsoft in January 2000. He remained as
chairman and created the position of chief software architect. In June 2006, Gates announced that
he would be transitioning from full-time work at Microsoft to part-time work, and full-time work
at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He gradually transferred his duties to Ray Ozzie, chief
software architect, and Craig Mundie, chief research and strategy officer. Gates' last full-time
day at Microsoft was June 27, 2008. He remains at Microsoft as non-executive chairman.
Early Life:
Family:Bill Gates grew up in an upper middle-class family with two sisters: Kristianne, who is older,
and Libby, who is younger. Their father, William H. Gates, Sr., was a promising, if somewhat
shy, law student when he met his future wife, Mary Maxwell. She was an athletic, outgoing
student at the University of Washington, actively involved in student affairs and leadership. The
Gates family atmosphere was warm and close, and all three children were encouraged to be
competitive and strive for excellence. Bill showed early signs of competitiveness when he
coordinated family athletic games at their summer house on Puget Sound. He also relished in
playing board game and excelled in Monopoly.

Bill had a very close relationship with his mother, Mary, who after a brief career as a teacher
devoted her time to helping raise the children and working on civic affairs and with charities.
She also served on several corporate boards, among them First Interstate Bank in Seattle
(founded by her grandfather), the United Way, and International Business Machines (IBM). She
would often take Bill along on her volunteer work in schools and community organizations.
Childhood & Education:Bill was a voracious reader as a child, spending many hours poring over reference books such as
the encyclopedia. Around the age of 11 or 12, Bill's parents began to have concerns about his
behavior. He was doing well in school, but he seemed bored and withdrawn at times. His parents
worried he might become a loner. Though they were strong believers in public education, when
Bill turned 13 they enrolled him in Seattle's Lakeside School, an exclusive preparatory school.
He blossomed in nearly all his subjects, excelling in math and science, but also doing very well
in drama and English.
While at Lakeside School, a Seattle computer company offered to provide computer time for the
students. The Mother's Club used proceeds from the school's rummage sale to purchase a
teletype terminal for students to use. Bill Gates became entranced with what a computer could do
and spent much of his free time working on the terminal. He wrote a tic-tac-toe program in
BASIC computer language that allowed users to play against the computer.
It was at Lakeside School where Bill met Paul Allen, who was two years, his senior. The two
became fast friends, bonding on their common enthusiasm over computers, even though they
were very different. They both spent much of their free time together working on programs.Occasionally, they disagreed and would clash over who was right or who should run the
computer lab. On one occasion, their argument escalated to the point where Allen banned Gates
from the computer lab. On another occasion, Gates and Allen had their school computer
privileges revoked for taking advantage of software glitches to obtain free computer time from
the company that provided the computers. After their probation, they were allowed back in the
computer lab when they offered to debug the program. During this time, Gates developed a
payroll program for the computer company the boys hacked into, and a scheduling program for
the school.
Early age Business:In 1970, at the age of 15, Bill Gates went into business with his pal, Paul Allen. They developed
"Traf-o-Data," a computer program that monitored traffic patterns in Seattle, and netted $20,000

for their efforts. Gates and Allen wanted to start their own company, but Gates' parents wanted
him to finish school and go on to college where they hoped he would work to become a lawyer.
Bill Gates graduated from Lakeside in 1973. He scored 1590 out of 1600 on the college SAT
test, a feat of intellectual achievement that for several years he boasted about when introducing
himself to new people. He enrolled at Harvard University in the fall, originally thinking of a
career in law. But his freshman year saw him spend more of his time in the computer lab than in
class.
Gates remained in contact with Paul Allen who, after attending Washington State University for
two years, dropped out and moved to Boston, Massachusetts, to work for Honeywell. In the
summer of 1974, Gates joined Allen at Honeywell. During this time, Allen showed Gates an
edition of Popular Electronics magazine featuring an article on the Altair 8800 mini-computer
kit. Both boys were fascinated with the possibilities this computer could make toward personal
computing. The Altair was made by a small company in Albuquerque, New Mexico, called
Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS). Gates and Allen contacted the company
proclaiming they were working on a BASIC software program that would run the Altair
computer. In reality, they didn't have an Altair to work with or the code to run it. But they
wanted to know if MITS was interested in someone developing such software. MITS was, and its
president Ed Roberts asked the boys for a demonstration. Gates and Allen scrambled, and spent
the next two months writing the software at Harvard's computer lab. Allen traveled to
Albuquerque for a test run at MITS, never having tried it out on an Altair computer. It worked
perfectly. Allen was hired at MITS and Gates soon left Harvard to work with him, much to his
parents' dismay. In 1975, Gates and Allen formed a partnership they called Micro-Soft, a blend
of "micro-computer" and "software."

Bill Gates' success is connected directly to Microsoft. The company Microsoft was officially
registered on 26th November, 1976 with USPTO. It was a co-effort of Bill Gates and his long
time friend and school mate Paul Allen. The company was located initially at Albuquerque but
on 1st January 1979, it was moved to Bellevue, Washington. Bill Gates became the chairperson
of Microsoft in the year 1985 on 20th November.
The name 'Windows', for the highly successful operating system launched by Microsoft, was
suggested by Rowland Hanson, the marketing head of Microsoft. The first version of Windows,
which was Windows 1.0, was not very successful as it was full of problems. This version was
launched in November 1985. At the early stages of Microsoft, its main competitor, Apple,
threatened Microsoft of a prospective lawsuit. This was because Windows seemed to have
picked up certain features from Apple. Only after signing a Licensing Agreement with Apple
itself, were all those issues sorted out.
After this, Bill Gates took over the entire responsibility of all Microsoft products. Since then, he
has played a significant role in strengthening the company. Bill Gates has been present in almost
every area of Microsoft be it that of a manager or a software developer. Thus, it can be said that
Microsoft is incomplete without Bill Gates.
Early experience;Gates early experiences with computers included debugging (eliminating errors from) programs
for the Computer Center Corporation's PDP-10, helping to computerize electric power grids forthe Bonneville Power Administration, and founding with Allen a firm called Traf-O-Data while
still in high school. Their small company earned them twenty thousand dollars in fees for
analyzing local traffic patterns.
While working with the Computer Center's PDP-10, Gates was responsible for what was
probably the first computer virus, a program that copies itself into other programs and ruins data.
Discovering that the machine was connected to a national network of computers called Cybernet,
Gates invaded the network and installed a program on the main computer that sent itself to the
rest of the network's computers, making it crash (became damaged). When Gates was found out,
he was severely punished, and he kept away from computers for his entire junior year at
Lakeside. Without the lure of computers, Gates made plans for college and law school in 1970.
But by 1971 he was back helping Allen write a class scheduling program for their school's
computer.

Gates entered Harvard University in 1973 and pursued his studies for the next year and a half.
His life changed in January of 1975, however, when Popular Mechanics carried a cover story on
a $350 microcomputer, the Altair, made by a firm called MITS in New Mexico. When Allen
excitedly showed him the story, Gates knew where he wanted to be: at the forefront of computer
software (a program of instructions for a computer) design.
Gates dropped out of Harvard in 1975, ending his academic life and beginning his career as a
software designer. At this time, Gates and Allen cofounded Microsoft. They wrote programs for
the early Apple and Commodore machines. One of Gates's most significant opportunities arrived
in 1980, when IBM approached him to help with their personal computer project, code name
Project Chess. Gates developed the Microsoft Disk Operating System, or MS-DOS. Not only did
he sell IBM on the new operating system, but he also convinced the computer giant to allow
others to write software for the machine. The result was the rapid growth of licenses for MS-
DOS, as software developers quickly moved to become compatible IBM. By the early 1990s
Microsoft had sold more than one hundred million copies of MS-DOS, making the operatingsystem the all-time leader in software sales. For his achievements in science and technology,
Gates received the Howard Vollum Award in 1984 from Reed College in Portland, Oregon.
Gates's competitive drive and fierce desire to win has made him a powerful force in business, but
it has also consumed much of his personal life. In the six years between 1978 and 1984, he took
a total of only two weeks vacation. But on New Year's Day 1994 Gates married Melinda French,
a Microsoft manager, on the Hawaiian island of Lanai. The ceremony was held on the island's
Challenge golf course, and Gates kept it private by buying out the unused rooms at the local
hotel and by hiring all of the helicopters in the area to keep photographers from using them. His
fortune at the time of his marriage was estimated at close to seven billion dollars. By 1997 hisworth was estimated at approximately $37 billion, earning him the title of "richest man in
America."
The future for Microsoft:Many criticize Gates not just for his success, but because they feel he tries to unfairlyand
maybe even illegallydominate the market. As a result of Microsoft's market control, the U.S.
Department of Justice brought an antitrust lawsuit (a lawsuit that is the result of a company being
accused of using unfair business practices) against the company in 1998, saying the company
had an illegal stronghold on the software industry.

Gates maintained Microsoft's success over rivals such as Oracle and IBM was simply the result
of smart, strategic decision making. U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Jackson did not agree, and in
November 1999, he found Microsoft to be a that used its market power to harm competing
companies. Because of the ruling, Gates faced the prospect of breaking up Microsoft.
On January 13, 2000, Gates handed off day-to-day management of Microsoft to friend and right-
hand man Steve Ballmer, adding chief executive officer to his existing title of president. Gates
held on to his position as chairman in the reshuffle, and added the title of chief software
architect.
In the spring of 2002 Gates himself was scheduled to testify on behalf of Microsoft. The final
ruling on the fate of Microsoft has the potential to be a landmark decision on the future of the
computer industry.
Bill Gates and IBM:IBM approached Microsoft in the year 1980 with a proposal of creating an operating system for
their first personal computer. Bill gates created OS/2 for this purpose and gave it to IBM. The
partnership of Microsoft and IBM was ended in 1991 on 16th May.
In 1980, IBM approached Microsoft to write the BASIC interpreter for its upcoming personal
computer, the IBM PC. When IBM's representatives mentioned that they needed an operating
system, Gates referred them to Digital Research (DRI), makers of the widely used CP/M
operating system. IBM's discussions with Digital Research went poorly, and they did not reach a
licensing agreement. IBM representative Jack Sams mentioned the licensing difficulties during asubsequent meeting with Gates and told him to get an acceptable operating system. A few weeks
later Gates proposed using 86-DOS (QDOS), an operating system similar to CP/M that Tim
Paterson of Seattle Computer Products (SCP) had made for hardware similar to the PC.
Microsoft made a deal with SCP to become the exclusive licensing agent, and later the full
owner, of 86-DOS. After adapting the operating system for the PC, Microsoft delivered it to IBM
as PC-DOS in exchange for a one-time fee of $50,000. Gates did not offer to transfer the
copyright on the operating system, because he believed that other hardware vendors would clone
IBM's system. They did, and the sales of MS-DOS made Microsoft a major player in the
industry.]
Gates oversaw Microsoft's company restructuring on June 25, 1981, which re-incorporated the
company in Washington state and made Gates President of Microsoft and the Chairman of the
Board.

Windows:Microsoft launched its first retail version ofMicrosoft Windows on November 20, 1985, and in
August, the company struck a deal with IBM to develop a separate operating system called OS/2.Although the two companies successfully developed the first version of the new system,
mounting creative differences undermined the partnership. Gates distributed an internal memo on
May 16, 1991, announcing that the OS/2 partnership was over and Microsoft would shift its
efforts to the Windows NT kernel development.[37]
Management style:From Microsoft's founding in 1975 until 2006, Gates had primary responsibility for the
company's product strategy. He aggressively broadened the company's range of products, and
wherever Microsoft achieved a dominant position he vigorously defended it. He gained a
reputation for being distant to others; as early as 1981 an industry executive complained in
public that "Gates is notorious for not being reachable by phone and for not returning phone
calls.
As an executive, Gates met regularly with Microsoft's senior managers and program managers.
Firsthand accounts of these meetings describe him as verbally combative, berating managers for
perceived holes in their business strategies or proposals that placed the company's long-term
interests at risk. He often interrupted presentations with such comments as, "That's the stupidest
thing I've ever heard! and, "Why don't you just give up your options and join the Peace Corps?"
The target of his outburst then had to defend the proposal in detail until, hopefully, Gates was
fully convinced.[41]When subordinates appeared to be procrastinating, he was known to remark
sarcastically, "I'll do it over the weekend."
Gates's role at Microsoft for most of its history was primarily a management and executive role.
However, he was an active software developer in the early years, particularly on the company's
programming language products. He has not officially been on a development team since
working on the TRS-80 Model 100, but wrote code as late as 1989 that shipped in the company's
products.[44]On June 15, 2006, Gates announced that he would transition out of his day-to-day
role over the next two years to dedicate more time to philanthropy. He divided hisresponsibilities between two successors, placing Ray Ozzie in charge of day-to-day management
and Craig Mundie in charge of long-term product strategy.

Antitrust litigation:
Bill Gates giving his deposition at Microsoft on August 27, 1998
Many decisions that led to antitrust litigation over Microsoft's business practices have had Gates'
approval. In the 1998 United States v. Microsoft case, Gates gave deposition testimony that
several journalists characterized as evasive. He argued with examiner David Boies over the
contextual meaning of words like "compete", "concerned" and "we".BusinessWeekreported:
Early rounds of his deposition show him offering obfuscatory answers and saying 'I don't recall,'
so many times that even the presiding judge had to chuckle. Worse, many of the technology
chief's denials and pleas of ignorance were directly refuted by prosecutors with snippets of e-mail Gates both sent and received.
Gates later said that he had simply resisted attempts by Boies to mischaracterize his words and
actions. Whatever that penalty is should be levied against me: rudeness to Boies in the first
degree." Despite Gates's denials, the judge ruled that Microsoft had committed monopolization
and tying, and blocking competition, both in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act.
APPEARANCE IN ADS:Gates appeared in a series of ads to promote Microsoft in 2008. The first commercial, co-starringJerry Seinfeld, is a 90-second talk between strangers as Seinfeld walks up on a discount shoe
store in a mall and notices Gates buying shoes inside. The salesman is trying to sell Mr. Gates
shoes that are a size too big. As Gates is buying the shoes he holds up his discount card, which
uses a slightly altered version of his own mugshot of his arrest in New Mexico in 1977 for a
traffic violation.[51]As they are walking out of the mall, Seinfeld asks Gates if he has melded his
mind to other developers, after getting a yes, he then asks if they are working on a way to make

computers edible, again getting a yes. Some say that this is an homage to Seinfeld's own show
about "nothing" (Seinfeld). In a second commercial in the series, Gates and Seinfeld are at the
home of an average family trying to fit in with normal people.
POST-MICROSOFT:Since leaving Microsoft, Gates continues his philanthropy and, among other projects, purchased
the video rights to the Messenger Lectures series calledThe Character of Physical Law, given at
Cornell University by Richard Feynman in 1964 and recorded by the BBC. In April 2010, Gates
was invited to visit and speak at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he asked the
students to take on the hard problems of the world in their futures.[55][56]
Personal lifeGates married Melinda French from Dallas, Texas on January 1, 1994. They have three children:
daughter Jennifer Katharine Gates born 1996 (age 1415), son Rory John Gates born 1999
(age 1112), and daughter Phoebe Adele Gates born 2002 (age 89). The Gates' home is an
earth-sheltered house in the side of a hill overlooking Lake Washington in Medina.
Also among Gates's private acquisitions is the Codex Leicester, a collection of writings by
Leonardo da Vinci, which Gates bought for $30.8 million at an auction in 1994.[58]Gates is also
known as an avid reader, and the ceiling of his large home library is engraved with a quotation
fromThe Great Gatsby. He also enjoys playing bridge, tennis, and golf.
[60][61]
Gates was number one on the Forbes 400 list from 1993 through to 2007 and number one on
Forbes list ofThe World's Richest People from 1995 to 2007 and 2009. In 1999, Gates's wealth
briefly surpassed $101 billion, causing the media to call him a "centibillionaire. Since 2000, the
nominal value of his Microsoft holdings has declined due to a fall in Microsoft's stock price after
the dot-com bubble burst and the multi-billion dollar donations he has made to his charitable
foundations. In a May 2006 interview, Gates commented that he wished that he were not the
richest man in the world because he disliked the attention it brought. Gates has several
investments OUTSIDE Microsoft, which in 2006 paid him a salary of $616,667 and $350,000
bonus totalling $966,667.[64]
He founded Corbis, a digital imaging company, in 1989. In 2004 hebecame a director ofBerkshire Hathaway, the investment company headed by long-time friend

GATES AS PHILANTHROPIST:Aside from being the most famous businessman of the late 1990s, Gates also has distinguished
himself as a philanthropist (someone working for charity). He and wife Melinda established the
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which focuses on helping to improve health care and
education for children around the world. The foundation has donated $4 billion since its start in
1996. Recent pledges include $1 billion over twenty years to fund college scholarships for about
one thousand minority students; $750 million over five years to help launch the Global Fund for
Children's Vaccines; $50 million to help the World Health Organization's efforts to eradicate
polio, a crippling disease that usually attacks children; and $3 million to help prevent the spread
of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS; an incurable disease that destroys the body's
immune system) among young people in South Africa. In November 1998 Gates and his wife
also gave the largest single gift to a U.S. public library, when they donated $20 million to theSeattle Public Library. Another of Gates's charitable donations was $20 million given to the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology to build a new home for its Laboratory for Computer
Science.
In July 2000 the foundation gave John Hopkins University a five-year, $20 million grant to study
whether or not inexpensive vitamin and mineral pills can help save lives in poor countries. On
November 13, 2000, Harvard University's School of Public Health announced it had received
$25 million from the foundation to study AIDS prevention in Nigeria. The grant was the largest
single private grant in the school's history. It was announced on February 1, 2001, that the
foundation would donate $20 million to speed up the global eradication (to completely erase) ofthe disease commonly known as elephantiasis, a disease that causes disfigurement. In 2002
Gates, along with rock singer Bono, announced plans for DATA Agenda, a $24 billion fund
(partially supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) that seeks to improve health care
in Africa.
Although many describe Gates as cold and distant, his friends find him friendlier since his
marriage and since the birth of his daughter, Jennifer, in April 1996. Further, he recognizes his
overall contribution to both the world of technology and his efforts in philanthropy. In Forbes
magazine's 2002 list of the two hundred richest people in the world, Gates was number one for
the eighth straight year, coming in with a net worth of $52.8 billion
Being the richest man in the world has also enabled Gates to create one of the world's largest
charitable foundations. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has an endowment of more than
$28 billion, with donations totaling more than $1 billion every year. The foundation was formed

Gates is a strong and energizing person his enthusiasm, hard working nature, judgment skills
reflect his personality. His motivating power and involving his friends to working with him
became the success of Microsoft. The Leadership style of Bill Gates is a mix of Delegative and
Participative style.
DELEGATE STYLE:
Gates pay high attention to recruit and retain best talent in software industry as he believes it is
very critical element. He delegates the authority to manager to run their independent department.
He has given free hand to his researches and made teams and groups out of them for more

picky. He is more hands-off and just reviews the final product and gives his input. He leaves it to
others to review the prototypes.
AUTHORITATIVE:

able to clearly articulate a vision and the path to success. Bill Gates has ability to
mobilize people towards a vision. One of the interesting aspects of Bill Gates this style is
that even though he is considered an authority, he allows the followers to figure out the
best way to accomplish their goals.
Power is the engine that drives the ability to influence. To understand leadership effectiveness
therefore, an analysis of the complex web of power relationships and influence processes in organizations is
essential. We also need to examine the sources of power and the relationship of different power sources toleadership effectiveness.

From day one, Gates dreamed of having a personal computer in every home, in every business
and in every school. Throughout his career, he never once wavered from this dream. Focusing on
software as the means to popularize the PC, Gates built his empire around this central vision and
steered clear of all other distractions. And, the vision continues today.
He Had a Solid Team:If we werent still hiring great people and pushing ahead at full speed, it would be easy to fall
behind and become a mediocre company, says Gates. From Microsofts inception, Gates
prioritized his team, bringing in only trusted friends to help him get the company started. As the
company grew, he insisted that they hire only the most capable young minds and strove to create
a small and creative environment for them to thrive in. Microsoft succeeded not only because of
Gates, but also because of the strong team that stood behind him.
He Took a Long-Term Approach:In the decade ahead I can predict that we will provide over twice the productivity improvement
that we provided in the 90s, said Gates. This bold statement captures Gates philosophy behind
his entire business. Never one to chase after instant success or an immediate pay-off, Gates
began coding software with a view to the next fifty years. He has constantly tried to keep his
company at the forefront of new technological developments by funding new research initiatives.
Gates long-term approach helped ensure Microsofts remarkable staying power.
He Learned From Failure:
In hindsight, Gates early failures seem so miniscule that they are almost laughable. But, as a
struggling entrepreneur, he went through the same frustration, confusion and despair that others
in his situation also face. What distinguishes Gates from the rest was his ability to rebound from
his mistakes and take whatever lessons he could from them. He then became even more resolute
and determined to see his vision realize.
He Never Stopped Asking Questions:I believe that through our natural inventiveness, creativity and willingness to solve tough
problems, were going to make some amazing achievements, said Gates speaking to the futurepossibilities for medicine, education and technology. When Gates faced a dilemma, he didnt
stop and give up. He asked questions about what could be done to solve the problem. From his
business activities to his philanthropic efforts, Gates curiosity and desire to constantly be
learning has been one of the key factors behind his success.

workers and make his contribution to the global village
At Microsoft, there are lots of brilliant ideas but the image is that they all come from the top,
says Gates. Im afraid thats not quite right. While Gates has been the famous face of Microsoft for over thirty years, it took the help of
numerous other trusted individuals to help realize the companys success.
When Allen and Gates first met as students at Lakeside, they instantly formed a strong bond over
their passion for computers. And, it was a bond that would last for the rest of their lives.
Knowing each others strengths and weaknesses, interests and passions and having a strong sense
of trust enabled these two entrepreneurs to form one of the most successful working relationships
of the 20th century.
Gates, recognizing the importance of a solid and trustworthy team, also brought on two former
high school friends, Ric Weiland and Marc McDonald, to be part of the core Microsoft group.
Gates knew that if Microsoft was going to get its feet off the ground, it was going to take the
hard work and sweat that he trusted few others to put in. From day one,he understood the
importance of having a small team that could join together each persons enthusiasm around a
common goal. When Gates moved the operation to Seattle in 1979, he had a staff of 16 people.
As Microsoft grew, so too did the number of employees that the company required. Gates
continued to bring in trusted friends of his whose characters he understood and who he knew he
could trust, including his friend from college, Steve Ballmer, who was thereafter in charge of
human resources. Steve and I were kind of driving the business and Paul and I were driving the
technology, recalls Gates. Our success has really been based on partnerships from the very
beginning.
The move to Seattle proved to be a boon for Microsoft in that it enabled the company to have a
much wider range of skilled candidates to choose from. In the world of software a lot of the
brilliant ideas of Microsoft come from a broad set of great people we've been able to hire, says
Gates. In one particularly key move, Ballmer hired Charles Simonyi, one of the original founders
of the Xerox Palo Alto research lab, whose knowledge about graphical interfaces made a
significant contribution to Microsofts later graphical applications.
Their number of staff began increasing into the thousands, the company typically focused on
hiring people right out of school. Most of our developers, we decided that we wanted them to
come with clear minds, not polluted by some other approach, to learn the way that we liked to
develop software, and to put the kind of energy into it that we thought was key, recalls Gates.
Microsoft continues to seek out only the best in order to help it stay ahead of its increasingly
fierce competition. They key for us, number one, has always been hiring very smart people,
says Gates. There is no way ofgetting around, that in terms of IQ, youve got to be very elitist

in picking people who deserve to write software. Ninety-five percent of the people shouldnt
write complex software.
By hiring the best and the brightest and carrying out work in small teams that stimulate free and
creative thinking, Microsoft has managed to retain its competitive edge for over three decades
Though he never set out to be a millionaire, Gates not only became the worlds first cent
billionaire in 1999, but also one of the worlds most respected entrepreneurs for having
revolutionized the world of computers and setting new industry standards. I really had a lot of
dreams when I was a kid, recalls Gates.
Power is the engine that drives the ability to influence. To understand leadership effectiveness
therefore, an analysis of the complex web of power relationships and influence processes in
organizations is essential. We also need to examine the sources of power and the relationship of
different power sources to leadership effectiveness.
CHARACTERISTICS OF BILL GATESINTELLIGENT:He believes that if you are intelligent and know how to apply your intelligence, you can achieve
anything. From childhood Bill was ambitious, intelligent and competitive. These qualities helped
him to attain top position in the profession he chose
VISIONARY:Microsoft's vision is "A computer on every desk and Microsoft software on every computer he
will continue to stomp out the competition until he dies. Every business and household must
have a computer and must run Microsoft software, was the basic guiding vision of Bill Gates.
PASSION:When as a student at the Harvard University, every single student would have wanted to be part
of the great institute and graduate to be successful, Bill Gates decided to stop studying and
pursue his dream of writing softwares for every computer in the world
He was just passionate about software, coding and technology that incidentally also made him

Gates and Allen were assisted by a staff of six, which included four programmers. In late 1977,
Gates released a version of FORTRAN language for microcomputers. In 1978, Gates and Allen
introduced a version of COBOL. Around this time, Microsoft emerged as the market leader in
microcomputer languages with sales exceeding $1 million. In 1979, Microsoft developed a new
version of BASIC... He had an early interest in software and began programming computers at
the age of thirteen.
RISK BEARER:In his junior year, Gates dropped out of Harvard to devote his energies full-time to Microsoft, a
company he had started in 1975 with his boyhood friend Paul Allen development of new
products.
CONTINOUS LEARNER:Microsoft is not about greed. Its about Innovation and Fairness. Bill Gates
Never stop learning was the Mantra of Bill Gates which he follow till date. This empowers him
to be a Great Leader of our times. He will always be remembers as an Icon and even without his
presence in Microsoft he would still be regarded as a great inventor and a real genius in every
regard of Business, Technology and Entrepreneurship.
ACCEPTING THE CRITICISMS:Its fine to celebrate success but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure.
There will be people who would want to make fun of your efforts, pull you down and so on. The
stronger you stand the bolder you get the faster these negatives wither. When IBM pulled out of
the contract for the operating system to be bundled with the IBM Clone PCs, Bill Gates stayed
on and started focusing on the creating Windows amidst lots of hiccups that will hamper the
company.
OTHER KEY LESSONS-BILL GATES:If you show people the problems and you show them the solutions they will be moved to act. Bill Gates
This is one never mentioned secret of success. Action is the key word.
When logic never drives us its emotions. We must have take action. Bill

Gates as a small young boy never had anything to lose which he kept telling his good friend Paul
Allen. When he had several odds again him such as the American Law and several cases against
him, he still consistently took action by developing more software which the people wanted. This
made him a super star overnight.
Whether its Google or Apple or free software, weve got some fantastic competitors and it
keeps us on our toes Bill Gates
Bill Gates took up the responsibility of being the Chief Software Architect, Bill Gates was
nurturing Microsoft by building a broad range of products. This was not just capitalizing on the
knowledge but provide the best by understanding the need of the people.
SOURCES & TYPES OF POWER POSSESSED BY BILL GATESPosition PowerLegitimate Power: It is based on his position power given by the organization. It is also called
the legitimization influencing tactic. Employees agree to comply with management authority in
return for the benefit of members. The use of legitimate power is appropriate whenasking a
person to do something that is within the scope of their job.
Legitimate Use of Rational PersuasionIt is used by Bill Gates while dealing with higher-level managers. Rational Persuasion includes
logical arguments with factual evidence to persuade others to implement your recommended
action
Reward Power:It is based on the leaders ability to influence others with something of value to them. Microsoft
is famous for giving huge remuneration packages to its employees. An important part of reward
power is having control over resources, such as allocating expense & budget funds.
Bill Gates has full control over evaluating employees performance determining their raises,
promotions & other rewards.
Coercive Power

The use of coercive power involves punishment & withholding of rewards to influence
compliance. It is also called the pressure influencing tactics. Bill was a autocratic leader but he
never made rash threats & used coercion to manipulate others or to gain personal benefits.
PERSONAL POWERSPersonal power is derived from the follower based on the leaders behavior. It includes expertise,
friendship or loyalty and charisma. Expert Power: It is based on the users skill & knowledge.
Being an expert makes other people dependent on the leader. People often respect an expert &
fewer the people who possess an expertise, the more power the individual has. Bill Gates is a
master of his subject & his knowledge, skills, expertise is never questioned, tagging him having
the expert power.
Referent Power:It is based on leaders personal relationships with others. It is also called the personal appeals
influencing tactics based on loyalty & friendship. But with Bill Gates it is more of loyalty due to
his autocratic behavior towards his employees. People stay at Microsoft for longer time period
than most of the companies.
INFLUENCE TACTICS
RATIONAL PERSUASIONBill Gates extremely used this tactic by applying its functions in a very logical manner.
Bill always explained why the objectives need to be met. He was very clear on the benefits
which the followers would get & conveyed the same to others.
He was very motivational regarding the set objectives & provided subtle evidences that the
objectives can be met. He was very quick on explaining how problems & concerns will be
handled. He always innovate newer technologies & was very clear on their strength over others.
Relation-oriented leadership:Leaders who describe their preferred coworker in favorable terms, with a high LPC, are
purported to derive major satisfaction from establishing close relationships with felow workers.
High LPC leaders are said to be relationship-orientated. These leaders see that good interpersonal
relations as a requirement for task accomplishment.

Task-oriented leadership:Leaders who describe their least preferred coworker unfavorable terms, with a low LPC, are
derived major satisfaction by successfully completing a task. These leaders are said to be task-
orientated. They are more concerned with successful task accomplishment and worry aboutinterpersonal relations later
The second major factor in Fiedler's theory is known as situational favorableness or
environmental variable. This basically is defined as the degree a situation enables a leader to
exert influence over a group. Fiedler then extends his analysis by focusing on three key
situational factors, which are leader-member, task structure and position power. Each factor is
defined in the following.
1. Leader-member relations: the degree to which the employees accept the leader.
2. Task structure: the degree to which the subordinates jobs are described in detail.
3. Position power: the amount of formal authority the leader possesses by virtue of his or her
position in the organization. So in this case Bill Gates found most favorable place where
positional power is high as he has most authorities in the firm, task structure is also defined as he
gives the direction to subordinate/follower to fulfill his vision, and last leader-member relation is
also good.
Thats mean Bill Gates is more likely Task-oriented leader who want performance from his
subordinate/follower and work has to be done to achieve the goal/objective of the company

BILL GATES as Inspirational LeaderWilliam H. Gates (Bill Gates) is a visionary man who uses that gift to advance technology and
extend the boundary of what software and machines can do. As a result of his work, he had
widely influenced many peoples; and along the line he became the true entrepreneur.
Gates's first major accomplishment took place in 1975 when, with the help of Allen, he wrote the
first versatile software program, Altair BASIC, that became the industry standard. He was the
first to challenge the freebie software distribution in a capitalistic letter. The following year,
1976, he dropped out of Harvard and made his third accomplishment, which was building
Microsoft.
Gates came of age in a time of innovation and creative thinking. During that era, technology
was still at the brink of evolution; therefore no hardware or software yet set the standard. Few
knew about computers and most of them were kids like Gates. Gates took advantage of his
opportunity to fulfill his childhood joy of computer game play and became an expertprogrammer.
Bill Gates's accomplishments influence us widely at work and in school.. Most important of all
is that Gates's accomplishments highlight a bright future for the human race and that is what
makes him an inspirational leader. Gates's accomplishments teach us that success can be
achieved through hard work and persistence. The best thing of all is this lesson can be applied to
anyone. Just follow your passion and dream the undreamable!
"There will be a day, not far distant, when you will be able to conduct business, study,
explore the world and its cultures, call up any great entertainment, make friends, attend
neighborhood markets, and show pictures to distant relatives--without leaving your desk
or armchair. It will be more than an object you carry or an appliance you purchase. It will
be your passport into a new, mediated way of life."

BILL GATES: ENTREPRENEUR, MANAGER, AND LEADERFEATURED PRODUCTSBill Gates and the Management of MicrosoftToday marks the last working day for Bill Gates at Microsoft. So much has been written and
spoken about him that another column appears redundant. Some people may even feel a tinge of
happiness that they no longer have to contend with the ruthless businessman that Gates has been
portrayed as. The purpose of this post is to analyze what can be learned by young people from
perhaps the most successful entrepreneur of our times.
Focus:Bill Gates has demonstrated over nearly thirty years the importance of clarity of thought and
execution. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he did not move away from the domain he
understood better than anything else - software. He has pursued the objective of dominance in
software in general and operating systems in particular that has few parallels. Venturing into
unfamiliar territory may be fashionable but carries a high degree of risk. If ever a need arises for
an absolute example for what Peters and Waterman called "Stick to the Knitting" and Hamel and
Prahalad termed core competence, one needs to look no further than Bill Gates and Microsoft.
Focus also means the ability to pursue one's goals whatever the obstacles may be. Such a degree
of perseverance is hard to come by.
Thinking big:Along with focus, the ability to dream big and pursue that with single-minded determination sets
Gates apart from other entrepreneurs. This is particularly true of entrepreneurs from emerging
economies like India where an ultra-conservative attitude has stifled growth. Entrepreneurs need
to develop confidence in themselves and their team that they can take on the world and come out
winners.
Passion:Simply put, if anything is worth doing, it is worth doing well. From a simple thank you note to acomplex proposal, it is critical to place the stamp of excellence on whatever one undertakes.
Equally important is the need to constantly innovate. Change is the only constant and the more
agile and adaptive we are to change, the more successful we can be.

Learning as a life-long process:Though dropping out of college to his dreams, Bill Gates has probably read and written more
than most of us ever will. In the process, he has shown the limits of formal education. Important
as formal education is, perhaps it is more important to realize that learning is a life-long process.
Knowledge is infinite. Even if we keep assimilating it without a break throughout a lifetime, we
would not have scratched the surface. Knowledge should lead to humility and wisdom - not
arrogance and one-upmanship.
Giving back to society:The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has provided a new dimension to philanthropy by
addressing issues that are global in nature - malaria, cancer, AIDS. Feeling good by doing good
may appear old-fashioned but this may yet be the best way forward in combating diseases that
kill or maim millions of people every year. With friend and legendary investor Warren Buffetalso joining hands, a formidable combination has been forged. Bill Gates has shown a
remarkable degree of consistency both in his business goals and in his goals in philanthropy - he
is a global citizen.
Although some Indian entrepreneurs have indeed espoused similar causes - Infosys Foundation,
Azim Premji Foundation, and the House of Tata come to mind, a lot more can be done by
successful Indian entrepreneurs. In fact, just 5% of the wealth of the 200 richest people can
eradicate some of the most pressing problems that we face. Wealth should not be merely in terms
of building the most flamboyant homes but in pursuing a higher calling. Where is the collective
conscience of the rich who hav made it big due to the society that they are a part of?
As with any successful or great person, there will always be controversies. In an age where the
distinction between means and ends is increasingly blurred, taking extreme positions hardly
helps. One may not agree with Gates' means for achieving what he has, but one would find it
difficult to ignore his contributions to the IT industry. However, history and posterity will
probably recognize him more for what he has decided to do - at a relatively young age - for the
rest of his life. Combating hunger, fighting disease and educating the poor are truly lofty goals
worth emulating by anyone who cares for humanity and for the quality of life on this planet. On
this count, there cannot be many role models better than Bill Gates. The last thirty years have
seen the emergence of an entrepreneur par excellence. The next thirty years will probably see theemergence of the greatest individual philanthropist - not necessarily in monetary terms - but in
terms of the global issues addressed with dedication.

BILL GATES CRITICISM :With his great success in the computer software industry also came many criticisms. With his
ambitious and aggressive business philosophy, Gates or his Microsoft lawyers have been in andout of courtrooms fighting legal battles almost since Microsoft began.
The Microsoft monopoly sets about completely dominating every market it enters through either
acquisition, aggressive business tactics or a combination of them. Many of the largest technology
companies have fought legally against the actions of Microsoft, including Apple Computer,
Netscape, Opera, WordPerfect, and sun Microsystems.
Curbing of Innovation:The critics argued that Microsoft was not an innovative company. They said that Gates reformed
existing products to satisfy customer needs instead of inventing new ones. Analysts also argued
that Microsoft's overwhelming market share was a major impediment to innovation in the
software industry. Microsoft was not just the market leader, but also the standards provider for
the industry.
Impediment in development of smaller firms:Critics claimed that winning was so important to Gates that he would go to any extent to beat his
opponent. James Wallace of Seattle Post-Intelligencer said, "Bill Gates not only wants to win,but he wants to kill the competition. He wants to bury the wounded"
Sometimes Gates took things so much to heart that his emotional feeling overshadowed his
rational thinking. They said that Gates' intense rivalry with some of his competitors made him
personalize every battle and obscured his judgment.
With his ambitious and aggressive business philosophy, Gates or his Microsoft lawyers have
been in and out of courtrooms fighting legal battles almost since Microsoft began.
Many of the largest technology co. have fought legally against the actions of Microsoft,
including APPLE COMPUTER, NETSCAPE, OPERA, WORD PERFECT, AND SUN
MICROSYSTEME ETC.
