Jura KonciusThe Washington Post

As the harsh winter sunlight shines on cluttered coffee tables, chipped woodwork and defl ated pillows, it’s obvious that our homes take a hit in the long hard slog from Thanksgiving to mid-January.

For inspiration, we reached out to some home retailers for their latest products and ideas. Here is a report.

1. ‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘Downton Abbey’ eff ect

“I get a lot of inspiration for the looks we show from the fashion collections,” says Gary Babcock, vice president of Arhaus. And British TV period dramas. So this spring line refl ects the infl uence of the Roaring Twenties, art deco and sets from the upcoming “Great Gatsby” movie.

“ ‘Downton Abbey’ just entered the Jazz Age, so the English country house look is going to start to change with a bit of sparkle and glamour,” Babcock says. The store has mirrored chests, beaded pillows and faux fur throws, plus purple and lavender paired with silver and metallics.

“All of this mixes beautifully with anyone’s brown wood furniture,” says Babcock. “It really dresses it up.” Arhaus offers a Paloma parlor sofa ($3,399) in “Cannes silver sage” velvet which can be accompa-nied by their Amelia ($1,649) mirrored top coffee table.

2. The statement pieceThe Patchwork Dresser ($999) by West

Elm has the handcrafted appeal of a quilt. The dresser has fi ve drawers and a cabinet, each done in a different wood front.

In addition to the eye-catching design, it’s “a double-duty piece designed for small-space living but that will move along with you,” says West Elm’s creative director Vanessa Holden. “Maybe one year it will be in your bedroom, another in the living room.” The clean architecture of the white case and the veneers should stand the test of time. In future roles, the dresser might anchor a home offi ce or serve as a media console.

3. The Industrial AgeWho couldn’t use more fi le space? CB2

has taken a familiar form, the basic powder-coated steel fi le cabinet, and recast it in a nontraditional color: mint. Line up

three of these babies ($159 each), which are called TPS: Totally Perfect Storage and are on casters, and top them with a steel Go-Cart White Console Table ($169). Ryan Turf, general merchandising manager for CB2, says “something with a such a familiar form, like a fi ling cabinet, done in an unexpected color can change the look of an entire offi ce or hallway.” It would be great at the back of a sofa. He says, “It makes a statement and looks modern.”

4. The bedroom pick-me-upBuying new bed linens is one of the

quickest ways to refresh your look, says Pat Eckerstrom, executive vice president at Crate & Barrel. “Textiles are a very approachable way to make things happen,” she says. “Many people don’t have much going on in their bedroom except furni-ture. You change the bedding and you have a whole new room.” Jaipur linens ($35 to $230) inject a bit of global chic by layering neutral taupes and putties in various textures and patterns.

5. Indigo bluesThe depth and richness of the color of

Azaleas come in all sizes, colors Q: How big are azaleas

supposed to be? Mine are getting really tall. Should I leave them alone?

A: Azaleas are defi nitely a favorite of the North Florida

garden, their showy blooms usher in our spring every year.

How large they will grow de-pends on what type of azalea you have. The Formo-sa Southern Indica type azaleas can reach heights of 12- to 15-feet tall when they are older and

growing under the right condi-tions. If this is under your window or right next to the front door, it might be a little tall for the scale of your home or landscape. Favorite Southern Indica types include; the popular dark pink called Southern Charm, the light pink-fl owered George L. Tabor and the white-bloomed azalea known as G.G. Gerbing. There are dwarf azaleas that only reach 2- to 3-feet tall, these types such as Red Ruffl es and Madonna White are more appropriate for areas where you want a smaller plant. Fashion azaleas top off at around 4 feet, and bloom in early February with coral-colored fl owers. The Florida native azaleas lose their leaves each fall. They can be as tall as 8-10 feet, but they grow very slowly. Flame azaleas and

Q: Attached are some pictures of an antique

carriage lantern from the 1800s . I was wondering if you could give me an idea of how much, if anything, it is worth.

S.M.,Internet

A: You have an antique

carbide-type bicycle lamp.

Water would drip on the carbide creating acetylene gas produc-ing a bright light that was magnifi ed by the front lens. There was an attachment that made it possible to be used on automobiles, as well. The one you own would sell for less than $100.

■ ■ ■

Q: My wife and I bought this china cabinet in south

Colorado around 2000. It was said to be of Welch origin, made around 1910. We are looking to sell it and do not know its worth, nor how we would go about selling it. Could you give us some guidance, please?

A.M., Gainesville

A: Your sideboard could be Welsh or

English, and made in the early 20th century, as you were told. I suspect it was in the condition it is in the photograph when you bought it. Originally, the entire cabinet was fi nished in a very dark blackened fi nish that is called ebonized, giving the wood the look of ebony. This type of fi nish is not very saleable, so dealers often try to strip off the ebonized fi nish, which is seldom completely successful, leaving tight areas with leftover black stain, like that on your cabinet. Some folks can accept or overlook this eyesore, but most cannot, creating a diffi cult item to sell. I think if you get close to or more

than $200, it would be a lucky day.

■ ■ ■

Q: I am trying to fi nd an approxi-

mate value for this 1960 Motorola Stereophonic record

player and AM/FM radio that belonged to

my grandparents. Every-thing works and it is in great condition . And due to the warming-up process that

happens when I turn it on, I

am assuming it works with tubes. The attached photos should help you identify it, but I am curious about it as no matter how hard I look, I cannot fi nd anything online about this specifi c model.

G.P., Micanopy

A: There is currently very little interest in console record

players with AM/FM radios, which is most of the reason you have not found any interest. Potential dollar value is catch-as-catch-can.

You might be able to discover some specifi c information about the Motorola you have by checking with the folks at Radio Relics. The website is www.clge.com. Good luck.

■ ■ ■

Q: My son has an unopened “25th Silver Anniversary

Edition” of “The Game of Life.” My father-in-law used to work for Milton Bradley and gave it to my son as a gift. We keep trying to fi nd how much it may be worth, but I can fi nd nothing out about this game. It is like it never existed. I think it may have been only made and given to employees and friends. Can you help?

D.G., Internet

A: The Milton Bradley Com-pany fi rst produced “The

Checkered Game of Life” in 1860. The name was changed to “The Game of Life” in the 20th century. There is no collector interest in your set. This is why you have not been able to fi nd out what it is worth. Potential dollar value is catch-as-catch-can.

The perfect time to prune azaleas is soon after they have fi nished fl owering. If needed, remove one-third of the height of the plant. Remove any older canes from the center of the bush if the plant has become too wide or thick with foliage. You can remove 1-2 older canes all the way to the ground. Prune anytime between the end of blooming and the Fourth of July.

If you wait too late in the summer to prune, you will be cutting off next year’s fl owers because all azaleas bloom on the older wood. If you would like your azalea to be 12- to 15-feet tall, do not prune it every year. Just prune to keep its shape and to allow for the sunlight to reach the lower parts of the plant. If the top of the plant shades the lower branches, they will become bare and unattractive. For more information on pruning, contact the Marion County Master Gardener offi ce

at 671-8400 . ■ ■ ■

Q: When should I prune my ornamental grasses back? I

have Muhly grass and red fountain grass.

A: Many gardeners chose to leave the brown foliage of

ornamental grasses on the plants for the winter months. Even when they have been touched by the frost, the long blades of the grass and spent fl ower plumes give a texture to the landscape. The grasses also give movement to the garden

when the blades blow in the wind. But when spring comes knocking at the door, we are ready for everything to be green and new, and we want to prune the grasses back. Our last frost date in North Central Florida is Sunday , so we are in the clear as far as pruning goes. If the blades of your Muhly grass are com-pletely brown, prune them off about 12 inches from the ground with hedging shears, clippers or a small chain saw.

For your evergreen grasses like red fountain grass or

Fakahatchee grass, the ragged dead leaves can be removed by combing the foliage with a pitchfork or stiff rake. Follow the pruning or raking with an application of slow-release fertilizer, and your grasses will be looking beautiful again in a few months. For more informa-tion about ornamental grass selection and care, visit the UF/IFAS Extension website at www.solutionsforyourlife.com

Tips for keeping the living room more presentable:

If trash tends to ■

accumulate in the family room, adding a wastebas-ket might cut down on clutter. If you know food will be thrown away here, get one with a lid and some deodorizing trash bags.

Papers, books, bro- ■

chures and magazines tend to accumulate on fl at surfaces all around the house . Make a quick sweep of all fl at surfaces by piling papers in a bin, then sorting and purging as necessary. Take a vow, and get your family to follow it, to put papers in fi les rather than on the coffee table.

Until the world goes ■

wireless, we’ll forever be stuck with tangled cables behind our entertainment centers. Fortunately, there are several options for taming cords in the family room. The most attractive is the slim Cableyoyo. It neatly coils up to 6 feet of cord and comes with an adhesive backing that sticks onto nearly any surface. A cable caddy usually sticks onto a

desktop (or behind the TV console) and has a space for several cables to clamp into. Your cords will still dangle freely, however, so a cable zipper, which encloses all the cables in a tube, might be the best bet.

If toys are taking over ■

your family room, it’s time to put them in timeout. Unused corners of a family room transform into great play areas because the walls serve to block encroaching clutter.

Coffee tables that look ■

great but don’t have any storage for magazines, remote controls or even drink coasters are probably making life more diffi cult. If you don’t have the budget for a new one, consider adding low storage cubes, rolling baskets or bins to stick under the table.

Multimedia like DVDs, ■

videotapes and CDs are staples of the family room. Take 30 minutes to begin sorting your entire collection, making two piles: one for keeping and one for selling back or donating.

Q: My husband and I are planning to remodel

our bathroom by chang-ing all the fi xtures, but

basically we’re leaving the existing fl oor plan the same. My question is about choosing the new bathtub.

Do they make heated bathtubs? I enjoy taking long baths, but do not like to keep adding hot water to the tub. We would need this tub to fi t our existing space and we plan to install a tile-wall enclo-sure. Is this possible to have all these features in one tub?

— Jean, Ohio

A: Not only should that be possible, you also

should be able to add another feature to your list. But, I’ll save that surprise for last.

First, let’s talk about the heating question. Yes, new-style bathtubs should be available in your area with heated

surface options. You will need to check your local codes and work with a

licensed electrician and plumber to have this type of tub installed, since it

does have a built-in heating element.

When soaking in the tub, the heated surface can warm your back and neck with adjustable temperature settings. These tubs are usually made from acrylic materials and are available in different styles and sizes, along with different installation features.

For instance, in your case, you would want a tub with a built in “tile fl ange” so you can use wall tiles for the tub enclosure. Some heated tubs are even available with a “curved apron” feature that will fi t the space of a standard tub, but will give you a little more soaking area.

When you add up all these features, I bet that a lot of people reading this will “warm up” to the idea of installing a heated bathtub!

Contact master con-tractor/plumber Ed Del Grande at eddelgrande.com or write [email protected]. Always consult local con-tractors and codes.

A new-style bathtub with heated-surface options will have to be installed by a licensed electrician and plumber, and local codes will need to be checked out.

SPRING: Indigo rugs, bed linens, pillows, upholstery, shown with other deep blues and grays

denim jeans is created using ages-old dying techniques in India and Japan. “It’s one of my personal favorite colors,” says West Elm’s Holden who believes that like a favorite pair of jeans, indigo interiors go with almost everything. “It’s very relatable.” You’ll fi nd indigo rugs, bed linens, pillows and upholstery, shown with other deep blues as well as grays. “We also like it with bright, clean, white in the

bedroom or living room,” Holden says. West Elm’s indigo Everett loveseat ($899), uphol-stered in a velvet they call “ink blue,” can anchor a living or family room.

6. Something French is always in style

Louis XVI chairs, whether carved and gilded or the clear acrylic, are decorating staples. At Wisteria, designers have updated the classic oval-backed

chair ($389) in weathered oak with pastel Belgian linen upholstery, giving the chair an eye-candy appeal. It is also available in an armless version ($299). Blum says the lavender, aqua, sage and French blue “add a bit of color to a traditional space and give a room a more vibrant look.” The chair would be at home in a dining room, bedroom, living room or used as an offi ce chair.

“In a few years if you get tired of it, you can reupholster it,”

Blum says. “This chair will always be relevant.”

7. Grow up and get a bar cart

In the fi rst episode of Season 2 of Lena Dunham’s “Girls” on HBO, Hannah and Elijah throw a housewarming party by corralling whatever booze they have onto their kitchen table. Wouldn’t it be nice to have some sort of cart to arrange bottles and all those bar accessories

you got as gifts? As we hibernate during these

winter months, be festive and invite friends over for a cocktail party. Celebrate by splurging on a cart that has a small footprint but a lot of storage, says Crate & Barrel’s Eckerstrom. Arranging your liquor and wineglasses on it will also free up storage space in kitchen cabinets. One solution is Crate & Barrel’s Collins ($799) trolley-style cart with three shelves and two stemware racks.

COMMERCIAL SEEING STEADYIMPROVEMENT

www.OMCAR.com

Major commercial real estate sectors continue to improve, although slow, the gradual economic improvement and job creation are helping

to increase absorption of space according to National Association of REALTORS® quarterly commercial real estate forecast. Lawrence Yun,

NAR chief economist, said rental housing demand has been exceptionally strong. “Rent increases have been higher in multifamily housing

where supply is not matching strong demand, thereby allowing landlords to raise rents at faster rates”. He also said, “Overall commercial

activity continued to grow in most markets during the closing months of 2012.” NAR’s latest Commercial Real Estate Outlook offers

projections for commercial sectors and analyzes data in the office, industrial, retail and multifamily markets.

Office Markets.. vacancy rates in office sector are forecast to fall in the first quarter with office rents increasing 2.6% in 2013, following

a 2% increase in 2012. Net absorption of office space includes leasing of new and existing properties is expected to 34 million square feet

this year and 42 million in 2014.

Industrial Markets.. vacancy rates are likely to decline to 9.6% in 2013 and 9.2% in 2014. Annual rents are projected to rise 2.3% and

2.6% in 2014, after increasing 1.7% last year. Net absorption is expected to total 122 million square feet in 2013.

Retail Markets.. vacancy rates are forecast to slide from 10.7% in 2013 to 10.4% in 2014. Average retail rents are expected to rise 1.5%

in 2013 and 2.1% in 2014 with net absorption of retail space hovering around 11.9 million square feet.

Multifamily Markets.. otherwise known as rental market - multifamily housing - should see vacancy rates ease a small fraction from 4%

to 3.9% in 2014. Average apartment rents are expected to increase 4.6% in 2013 after a 4.1 % increase in 2012. This trend is expected

to continue as many buyers struggle to qualify for mortgage loans and home prices continue to rise. Vacancy rates below 5% are generally

considered a landlord’s market with demand justifying higher rents.

What does this all mean? The commercial market can be a lagging indicator of the real estate market. When the residential market started

its fall in early 2006 the commercial market was still going strong. With the residential market making steady improvements over the last

year and commercial making some positive gains, it could be a sign we have turned the corner in the real estate market. (Information

Actress Patricia Heaton, who stars in “The Middle,” and her husband,

actor David Hunt, put their home in Hancock Park up for sale at $8.295 million, and in three weeks it was in escrow.

Nearly 8,400 square feet of interior space features Malibu tile, murals, wrought-iron work, a library, a billiard room,

seven fi replaces, six bed-rooms, fi ve bathrooms, two offi ces and a guesthouse/screening

Spring is just around the corner, and one of the best ways to celebrate this

season of new beginnings is to mix some of today’s fresh new fabrics into home decor. Here are my top picks:WALK ON THE WILD SIDE WITH ANIMAL PRINTS: Animal prints still are thriving in the jungle of home-deco-rating fabrics. Designers keep reinventing patterns so they are fresh and vibrant .

When you decorate with animal prints, be careful not to go overboard. Often, just a pillow or two is all you need to mix things up a bit.CHEVRON MAKES THE HEART

BEAT FASTER: Chevron pulses with youthful energy.

Believe me, today’s chevrons are not like those kooky patterns in

your mom’s living room. Done in turquoise, choral and emerald, they look brand-new. I love a chevron mixed in with more traditional fabrics in pillow arrangements, whether on a sofa or bed, to give the overall look more zip.LOVELY LATTICES LOOK SO HIP: Today’s designers have given yesterday’s lattice patterns a new modern

vibe. Even though the new look in lattice motifs is big and bold, this reinterpret-ed classic is really pretty quiet, so it works well mixed in with fabrics that are stronger, brighter and busier. My favorite way to use lattice fabrics right now is on side chairs. They create an interesting backdrop for a host of fun

decorative treatments in a room.

Lattices also are ideal for layering, whether you’re pulling together a group-ing of accent pillows on a sofa or creating a bedding ensemble that is as perky as a cup of morning coffee.FLORALS THAT ARE FRESH AND FUN: When you hear “fl oral,” do you picture

your grandma’s parlor, or those heavy Waverly patterns that were so big in the ’70s and ’80s? Erase that image from your mind, because this season’s fl ower-inspired patterns tell a brand-new story.

Florals today are robust, not fi nicky, featuring bigger graphic patterns and more open space instead of the heavily layered images of old. TICKING SO CUTE IT WILL TICKLE YOU PINK: I have been in love with simple, sedate ticking for years, and my affection shows no signs of stop-ping. If you like a quieter palette in your furnishings for spring, you can’t beat a soothing, crisp ticking pattern. When you cover

upholstered furnishings in a gray-and-cream or black-and-white ticking, you get a slightly textured neutral that gives you a great blank canvass for pillows in any color or pattern imaginable. Or, weave in a pillow made out of ticking to help mute a bigger-than-life pattern.BOLD BUFFALO CHECKS ARE ARRESTING: My love also runs deep for buffalo plaid. This self-confi dent fabric comes in lots of color combinations, like yellow and cream. I really like black and cream for spring, spiced up with a colorful pillow.
