September 20, 2013 Student Serve Electronics Recycle Drive Student Serve is a student-led, district-wide initiative committed to the betterment of the community. This year, Student Serve will be taking place over the week of Sept. 23-28, much unlike the last couple of years where it was only for one day. For the seniors in Government Politics classes, Student Serve will count for volunteering hours. Don’t be afraid to get a group of friends together to participate. You can sign up on the LPS Student Serve website. Do you have any old electronic appliances that you have meaning to throw away but don’t know where to do so? Look no further, as the LSW Band and Orchestra will be holding their bi- annual Electronics Recycle Drive on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Anything that uses (or once used) electricity is eligible to be recycled. If you are worried about your personal information on the hard drives of the computers you might be recycling, the company they use, Secure Recyclers, will delete any secure information you have. Secure Recyclers will also help you move anything from your home if it is too heavy for you to carry, like refridgerators. To all seniors, it is never too soon to get your senior pictures done. The deadline for your senior pictures to be put in the yearbook in place of those unsightly ID photos is October 31. Some great local photographers that do senior pictures are Alyson Edie, Wyn Wiley, and Griffin Day. Yearbook pictures need to follow certain guidelines, so be sure to talk to your photographer about it, or find details on the LSW website by searching “senior pictures.” Senior Pictures Big Red, Big 10, Big Addition By Karsyn Shkolnick Pinnacle Bank Arena is Lincoln’s newest addition to the city. The arena is located downtown near the Haymarket area. Originally referred to as “Lincoln Haymarket Arena,” the arena was purchased by Pinnacle Bank for $11.25 million on a 25-year contract and renamed to reflect the purchase. The cost to build this arena was ap- proximately $179 million. The arena was built by a city vote that took place on May 11, 2010. Construction began in Sept. 2011,The addition officially opened for self guided tours on Aug. 16, 2013. The first official event was the Michael Buble concert on Sept. 13, 2013. The ribbon cutting ceremony took place on Aug 29. There were many people who spoke on how the arena is a great addition to the city. Among those who spoke were Governor Dave Heineman, Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler, Nebraska Men’s Basketball Coach Tim Miles, Nebraska Women’s Basketball Coach Connie Yori and Uni- versity of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Harvey Perlman. “This arena won’t just be for the community, but the state as well,” Mayor Beutler stated. “It is a great, exciting, big addition for all.” “The city is expanding very rap- idly,” Governor Heineman stated. “I am looking forward to visitors around the nation seeing the state as an at- traction, as Lincoln and Omaha are becoming safer, bigger, nicer commu- nities.” There are many events taking place at the new arena this fall. Up- coming performances include: The Eagles on Oct. 4, Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley on Oct. 10, Bon Jovi on Oct. 20, P!nk on Nov. 9, Trans Siberian Orchestra on Nov. 14, John Mayer on Nov. 22, Elton John on Nov. 23, and Jay Z on Dec. 1.The first Nebraska Men’s Bas- ketball game will take place on Nov. 4 vs. Kear- ney, and The first Nebras- ka Women’s Basketball game will take place on Oct. 27 vs. Pittsburgh State. There are also many events taking place in the winter, and in 2014 that have not yet been announced. One thing that makes the arena unique is a curtain that drops down over seats that are not being used for certain events taking place.There are approximately 15,900 seats that can be used for a center stage event, 14,970 for sports events and 14,620 for an end stage event. Though every general seat in the arena is padded and has a view- able angle, there are also suites available. Each suite has 10 leather seats with a private deck and an overall view of the court or stage. The suites also include a living room area, refrigera- tor and cabinets, a wet bar, provided beverages and snacks and a TV to view cable or the stage view of the event. The arena has concessions by the SAVOR company, which is the of- ficial food and beverage provider for the arena. Food choices range from state fair favorites like hot dogs, corn dogs and burgers, to Capitol Terrace Grill serving steak, chicken and much more. There is a sense of hometown pride as you enter the south lobby. Inside is a 21 feet tall by 4 feet wide piece of artwork called “The candy box.” This piece of artwork includes a wall full of giant sized chocolates. The artist, Donald Lipski, who is a native of Philadelphia, stated that, “This piece of artwork will celebrate Lincoln’s history as a candy manufac- turing town.” Each chocolate will individually be in its own shape representing im- portant events that happened in the arena or the community. The project will cost an estimated $70,000. The community has waited two long, hard working years for such a big addition to be built, and they are proud it is finally ready to entertain the state, or as the Governor stated, “the nation.” Members of the UNL Band celebrating the opening of the Pinnacle Bank Arena, located at 5651 S 59th St. Lincolnites enjoy the vast basketball court within the Arena. Pinnacle Bank Arena is Lincoln’s newest addition to the city.The arena is located downtown near the Haymarket area.
