CUSTOMER PROFILE
BHP Billiton is the world’s largest diversified resource company. BHP Billiton undertook a feasibility study into the possible expansion of Olympic Dam Copper/Uranium mine in Northern South Australia.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Being the largest projects of its type in the world meant that the risks involved in equipment selection and cost estimation are high. A small variance in input costs can make a large absolute dollar difference to the overall project cost.
Expertise and systems were provided to build detailed life cycle models of the equipment. iSolutions AMT Modelling and Budgeting Tool was used to build the models and the base manufacturer data was validated against the cost and performance of existing BHP Billiton equipment.
Many scenarios were run to model the risks identified by the project team and provide a complete estimate of the maintenance department budget and resources.

Case Study: Tritton Copper
In an Uncertain Copper Market, Tritton Needed to Accurately Understand Future Mine Costs
CUSTOMER PROFILE
Tritton Copper Mine is an underground mine in New South Wales owned and operated by Straits Resources. Ore is hauled from 900m vertical below surface by diesel truck. The ore is processed in a mill and paste plant and further refined in a cementation plant.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Big Iron developed a full mine maintenance budget covering mobile plant, mine infrastructure and processing facilities. Tritton’s two process plants, 148 items of mobile equipment as well as mine infrastructure were included in the budget. The complete budget was developed from first principles in only 5 days.
Big Iron used pre-built life cycle models and cost structures to greatly speed up the development of the budget.
iSolutions AMT budgeting software was used to build and store the budget. AMT also allowed the budget to be tracked against actual costs during the year.

Case Study: Wilpinjong Mine
As a Low Cost Producer, Wilpinjong Needs to Continually Understand the Cost of Running Mining Equipment
CUSTOMER PROFILE
Peabody Energy‘s Wilpinjong Mine near Mudgee in NSW is a low cost producer of high quality thermal coal. The mine produces approximately 12.5mt of thermal coal per annum for local and export markets.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Wilpinjong had used an earthmoving contractor to mine for a number of years. In 2013 they decided to purchase their own equipment and do the mining themselves.
We used AMT life cycle cost modelling software to build detailed life cycle cost models for each type of equipment on site.
The dynamic life cycle cost models (updated monthly from SAP work orders) allow Wilpinjong to see how they are performing against their cost assumptions and make changes to the maintenance strategy as required to achieve the lowest cost per tonne and optimal availability.
