As members of the crew for tendays, DeLanna and Amy helpedsail the ship on a voyage thattook them to Dublin, Isle ofMan and Liverpool.

To be honest, I was a bitfrightened at the thought ofgoing to sea on a sailing ship forten days said DeLanna, I

wasnt sure about being awayfrom my family and living witha group of people I didnt know, except for Amy. I gave it a lotof thought but then I justdecided to give it a go. Whatwas the worst thing that couldhappen? Oh yes, the ship couldsink.

DeLanna Recalls Trip Of A Lifetime

Well, Amy and I made it back toBelfast alive having had anamazing experience and made somany friends. But it was alsovery hard work and I sufferedfrom sea sickness for part of thetime.

We did lots of things we had

never done before. It was reallytough at times but at the end ofthe ten days I had so muchconfidence. Im so glad thatImpact encouraged me to take

    part.

Impact Training AssistantManager, Joe Stewart, explained

the organisations thinking. Weencourage and fully support ouryoung people to try newchallenges such as this. Theexperience they get improves theemployability of the young

Striding Forward With Steps to Work

SHANKILL Road womenMichelle Hamilton and MarianBeattie have been taking greatstrides forward since joiningImpacts Steps to Work

    programme last year.

Both women joined the trainingscheme for unemployed adultslast year with the desire toimprove their job prospects.

By taking part in a workplacement in the Holy Groundcafe located on the Shankill/Falls peaceline, they have madeexcellent progress towardsachieving their objective.

Michelle and I work four daysa week serving in the cafe, said Marian. The staff in HolyGround are really nice and we

both have learnt so much about

working in a modern cafe. Wehave to use different types ofcatering equipment and dealwith customers in the right way.It can be difficult sometimes butit is great training.

When single parent Michellevolunteered for the six monthsSteps to Work programme inOctober last year, she had nointention of doing any training

    courses in English or Maths.

However, after speaking toImpacts Steps to Work Co-ordinator Michelle realised that

by improving her own Englishand Maths skills she would also

be able to help her daughter withher homework.

Michelle overcame her initialfears and joined one of Impacts

English classes working towardsa Level Two Communications(English) qualification. She also

signed up for a Level 2Application of Number (Maths)course.

At first I was pretty anxiousbut I soon realised that I was nodifferent from the othermembers of the class, saidMichelle. I made the rightdecision because when I finish Iwill have qualifications that arethe same as English and MathsGCSEs at grade C.

Marian, who also volunteeredfor the Steps to Workprogramme, was happy to joinImpacts English and MathsLevel One classes onThursdays. I had been involvedin road accidents when I wasyoung and as a result hadmissed a lot of schooling. MyThursday classes give me achance to make up for some ofwhat I missed.

Michelle and Marian prefer notto put themselves under toomuch pressure with regard thefuture but both would like to

progress to the VRQ FoodHygiene qualification and afterthat gain part-time or full-timeemployment in Catering andHospitality. Impact Trainingwill do everything it can to helpthem, said Co-ordinator,Siobhan Sales.

LEARNING can be such greatfun. Thats what a group ofImpact trainees discovered onthe first day of a twelve weekBelfast Activity Centre

    programme.

On 16th January, the eightyoung people kick started theirinvolvement in an exciting andchallenging personaldevelopment course.

Each Wednesday until MidApril, the trainees take part inoutdoor pursuits such as

caving, canoeing, mountainbiking, bouldering and climbing. The aim is to strengthen theirleadership and team buildingskills and improve theirconfidence.

Impact Training co-ordinator forthe initiative, Gemma King, explained the benefits for theyoung people. Many of theoutdoor pursuits present totallynew challenges for our trainees.Taking part in the activitiesoften involves overcoming

    personal barriers such as

Learning While Having A Great Time

anxiety. As the barriers fadeaway, the self-confidence andesteem of the trainees soars.
