ALEBYGGEN, SWEDEN In Sweden the Big Hanna composters are marketed under the name ’’ALEtrumman’’. This name was taken as the first machine was built in 1991- 92 in cooperation with a public housing company in a local council called Ale north of Gothenburg. Since then 14 more compost machines have been installed and on their website you can read their thoughts on working for the environment. 'For many years Alebyggen and their tenants work for the environment by sorting waste material, recycling, and composting. We were one of the first companies where each apartment has sorting equipment installed so that the tenants can sort their kitchen waste more easily. In some areas the tenants can compost in larger composting drums and in some areas there are smaller solutions installed. The company and tenants works together for a better environment.'

TIMRÅBO AB, SWEDEN A housing company owned by the local council invested in ten compost machines in 1996. After evaluating how the compost machines worked they invested in spring 2002 in another 23 compost machines. This gives all tenants in 1900 apartments the possibility to compost their food waste. The Director of AB Timråbo, Per Sandberg, says that the choice was obvious, they know from experience that on-site composting works and they are now self sufficient in taking care of the biodegradable waste from their tenants.

RIKSBYGGEN BRF SAGOGÅNGEN, GÖTEBORG, SWEDEN Eight Big Hanna Composters model T60-T75 are installed in this housing area to take care of the food waste from 560 households.

AB ÄNGELHOLMS BOSTÄDER, SWEDEN Eight Big Hanna Composters are installed in the area 'Kulltorp', a housing area with mainly apartments that have ground floors and terraces. The council owned housing association offers source separation of their waste in 9 recycling buildings eight of which are equipped with a Big Hanna and bins for sorting newspapers, paper, cardboard, glass, metal, batteries, light bulbs, chemicals and residual waste. Management of the Big Hanna takes place 2 or 3 times per week together with the inspection of the collection bins. The compost is stored in maturation bays and matures between growing seasons. Tenants can use the compost on their flower beds and in their flower pots. These machines were installed during 2007 and 2008.

GÖTEBORGS STADS BOSTADSBOLAG, GÖTEBORG, SWEDEN A Big Hanna Composter model T40 takes care of the food waste from 25 households and a nursery nearby in this central part of Gothenburg.

BRF GRANSÄTRA, SKÄRHOLMEN, SWEDEN A Big Hanna Composter model T120 is installed since 1997 in this housing area. There are here allotments which the tenant cultivates. In 2010 Gransätra was awarded HSB:s Climate award for their persevering work for the environment.

BRF JÄTTENS GÖMME, KUNGÄLV, SWEDEN Two Big Hanna Composters model T60 installed outdoors in a housing area with about 90 apartments. The compost is sifted and put on a maturation bay where the people can collect the compost to use in their gardens.

SUNHOUSES GÅRDSTENSBOSTÄDER, GÖTEBORG, SWEDEN In the year 2000 three Big Hanna Composters model T120 was installed in Gårdsten, Göteborg. The area is called 'Sunhouses' and involves the rebuilding of three housing areas with solar panels and greenhouses. In every greenhouse there is a Big Hanna Composter installed which takes care of the food waste. The tenants put their food waste into the composter and use the compost material as fertilizer in the hotbeds - the cycle is closed. The reconstruction of these housing areas received the 'World Habitat Award' in august 2005. Gårdstensbostäder, the housing company, also have other areas where they exchanged another brand of compost machine to dependable Big Hanna Composter in February 2009.

the Big Hanna food waste composter. Since the first installation of a Big Hanna at HMP Morton Hall in 2001 a further 50 machines have been delivered and are now specified as a matter of course. In general the food waste that UK prisons generate has a tendency to be very wet so most prisons are using Big Hanna Composter in combination with a mechanical dewatering system that will get the moisture content to levels that allow a more effective composting process. The compost that is being produced is being used to grow plants and vegetables within the prisons with very good results. The success of the food waste composting using Big Hanna is leading to further installations not only in the prison estate but also in other governmental institutions throughout the UK. BIG HANNA IS INSTALLED IN NEARLY 50 OF THE UK PRISONS There are 120 prisons in the UK with over 80,000 inmates. Like any big organization the prison service has a huge volume of waste being generated every day. Each UK prison has a waste management unit where prisoners are employed to sort and recycle everything they can from the waste. The prison service has a good record for recycling and also enjoys a reputation for being innovative in trying new technology that will enhance its environmental credentials --- for example, through the sustainability department, funding has been found to set up wind turbines for electricity generation and Bio Mass and ground source heating systems. THE EDEN PROJECT, CORNWALL, ENGLAND This Neter30 (a larger and tailor made compost machine from the same family as Big Hanna Composters) was supplied by Susteco AB to Eden Project in 2005. The composter has, besides the same functions as a Big Hanna, a bin lift for larger bins, a conveyor belt where the food waste is inspected, a shredder for larger volumes, 20 temperature sensors and of course a much larger cylinder. The flow through composting principle is the same as Big Hannas. The Eden Project composts the food waste from its restaurants and is also processing some green waste. The biological process in this machine takes 80 days and the temperature is often much more than 60ºC. The end product is very high in nutrients and is mixed with soil or used as compost. Nicolette Knight, Waste Operations Manager at Eden, said: ‘‘The whole composting process is a great educational tool for visitors, because they see the journey of their food from the plate through to the plant. It starts as they sort waste from their trays into different containers, and ends as they pass the composting plant which has been deliberately sited near one of the public car parks. KINGSBAY AS, NY ÅLESUND, SVAALBARD Big Hanna Composter Model T120 - installed at the research centre (research on climate change as well as other areas) 1200 km from the northpole. This machine is used by the station as well as by the rest of the village. The goal is to landfi ll nothing on Svaalbard so they sort their waste in 25 diff erent fractions and the material that cannot be used is tranported back to the mainland. In winter the polar bears often come and visit the village. Big Hanna plays an important part composting the food waste so that it the bears wont be tempted eat it.

THE MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES MNR, THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO CANADA The first Big Hanna mobile composting unit was installed in Thunder Bay Ontario for the Ministry of Natural Resources Fire Rangers. The composter model T60 is mounted on a trailer that follows to fire ranger’s forest camps. The Big Hanna composter is receiving all the food waste of the fi re ranger’s camp and allows composting locally the food waste instead of hauling the garbage back to landfill. It’s a wonderful accomplishment in the green waste treatment plan established by the Ministry of Natural Resources of Ontario Canada. In the winter season when there are not that many fi res the Big Hanna is going to be used by the prison in Thunder Bay.
