Statistics

Each year about 2 percent of motor vehicle crash deaths are bicyclists.

Majority of Bicycle Accidents occur between children under the age of 20.

Children (5-14 years), adolescents, and young adults (15-24 years) have the highest rates of nonfatal bicycle-related injuries, accounting for almost 60% of all bicycle-related injuries seen in U.S. emergency departments

Males are much more likely to be killed or injured on bicycles than are females

A total of 741 bicyclists were killed in crashes with motor vehicles in 2013, a 2 percent increase from 2012.

Helmet use has been estimated to reduce the odds of head injury by 50 percent

In New york 74 percent of fatal bicycle accidents between 1996 and 2005 involved a head injury, and 97 percent of those killed were not wearing a helmet.

Ways to Promote Helmet use

As a salesman advertise helmets when kids go to purchase a bike.

Buy a kid a helmet as a gift

Go on family outings where everyone wears one

Punish kids for not wearing one/ Time out

Reward children for responsibility

Goal

The goal is too educate young children so that when the grow older their childhood habits will influence how they act as older individuals.

Teach adolescents to be responsible and regard safety as a number one priority
