Sometimes bigger isn’t better. Rockin J Horse Stalls is a case in point. “We don’t strive to be the biggest manufacturer of horse stalls,” says Rockin J owner Rocky Gilreath. “We do, however, strive to make the highest quality, safest, best de-signed stall for your horse and barn.” Gilreath, who raises racehorses in Mannford, OK, has been in business 30 years, offering the heaviest stall on the market that features all-welded construction with a 14-gauge steel frame, 12-gauge steel U-channel, and steel bars spaced no more apart than 2 inches. “You have to be strong to hold up to these horses,” he says. His product has the little extras that horsepeople can appreciate, such as easy-sliding, double-latching doors, self-cleaning guides on door bottoms, and U-channel coverings on wood edges to prevent cribbing. Rockin J Horse Stalls can be custom built to fi t your needs and are always top quality and elegant. CONSTANCE JAEGGI CONSTANCE JAEGGI leads NON-PRO CLASSIC/CHALLENGE WITH HIGH COMPOSITEleads NON-PRO CLASSIC/CHALLENGE WITH HIGH COMPOSITESTEVE FEINER AND JULIE WRIGLEYSTEVE FEINER AND JULIE WRIGLEY TIE WITH SECOND ROUND HIGH SCORETIE WITH SECOND ROUND HIGH SCORE

Constance Jaeggi was surprised to learn that she and Dual R Smokin were the composite leaders after the second round of the Classic/Challenge Non-Pro. “I didn’t realize that,” she said as she walked into the Breeder’s Invitational show offi ce. “It’s a nice surprise. This is a fun show.” Jaeggi and her Dual Rey stallion out of Smokin Pepto by Peptoboonsmal secured the position after marking a 216 in the second round yesterday. On May 21, their impressive 221 in the fi rst round made them the leader that day.

The 19-year-old from Geneva, Switzerland, and Dual R Smokin went on to mark a 212 in the Non-Pro Limited Rider fi nals last night. Competing fi fth out of 11 draws, the pair earned a fourth-place fi nish and a $5,152 check. Today they will compete in the Classic/Challenge Non-Pro fi nals as the 20th pair in the 23-team fi eld. Chubby Turner, her trainer, suggested her family purchase Dual R Smokin after watching him and Grant Setnicka mark a 228 in the NCHA Super Stakes Wild Card this past April.

Non-Pro Classic/Challenge 2nd round co-leader Julie Wrigley doesn’t ride Special Nu Kitty very often, so she has to remind herself how to sit when she’s on board the mare. “I have to remember how to sit in my saddle,” she said. “If I relax, I do much better.”

Obviously, she was relaxed yesterday. Wrigley and her High Brow Cat daughter tied with Steven Feiner and Mandalay Rey when both posted the go-round high score of 218. “We cut the cows we wanted,” said Wrigley, who calls Weatherford, Texas home. “That mare is so brilliant that if I stay on her, she will always do her job.” The 6-year-old out of Nu I Wood by Zack T Wood came to the Breeder’s Invitational fresh from a third-place

Reserve title. But this year, Feiner is hoping to garner some of that success while in the saddle, and has been working hard to do so. Feiner fl ew into Tulsa several days ago to get plenty of practices in before he show and with a 218 leading second go score in the Non-Pro Classic/Challenge on Mandalay Rey, his efforts appear to be paying off. “Because I haven’t been doing well, I fl ew in [Wednesday] and have been riding six and seven hours every day. Something’s helped so we’ll repeat this,” he said of the regimen. As for the fi nals, he said his game plan is to “cut clean, stay with the plan and hope for the best.”

The pair will get a shot at a third title this morning

A testy cow that Heather Stiles and Dulces Joker tagged for nearly 50 seconds helped them take the BI Classic/Challenge Non-Pro Limited Rider Championship – the second title the team claimed in a week. After Steven Feiner and Mandalay Rey marked a 219 from the fourth draw in the fi nals yesterday in Tulsa, Okla., Stiles and her 5-year-old Dulces Smart Lena gelding bested them four horses later by a half-point. The score secured them the championship and a $6,896 paycheck. Both teams will compete again, with 21 others, in the Classic/Challenge Non-Pro fi nals today. The victory was the second for Stiles and Dulces Joker in the Ford Truck Arena, where the pair claimed their fi rst career victory by winning the Non-Pro of the Mercuria/NCHA World Series of Cutting in Tulsa on May 17. Although the son of Miss Joker Tanquery by Tanquery Gin had lifetime earnings of $45,164 that included making the NCHA Derby Non-Pro fi nals, the horse, bred by W.S. Morris III of Augusta, Ga., had never won an event. The 36-year-old cutter from Scurry, Texas, had her eye on the feisty cow from the beginning. “I had seen it and I wanted it,” she recalled. “I thought we might have worked the previous cow a little long, but when we got on this one, we stayed hooked and rode it out to the very end. He’s a talented cow horse with a lot of heart.”David Stewart originally trained Dulces Joker, then Stiles took over with his help and that of others. “She’s done a lot of the work herself,” the Wynnewood, Okla., trainer said. “It’s great to see a horse you’ve had a part in do well. This is just the beginning for them. They’re going to have a long, successful career.”

Stiles, who owns an asset management company, is also part of Stiles Cowhorse Company, a cutting horse operation in Scurry that breeds show horses and prospects that have some of the top bloodlines in the industry. She grew up on the esteemed King Ranch, where her father, Joe Stiles, was Quarter Horse manager. “I was fortunate to grow up during the era of Mr. San Peppy and Little Peppy,” she explained. Heather spent many hours in the saddle with

for Jamie and believed it was partly due to his new breeding schedule. The horse’s fi rst babies are on the ground this year and York has one she’s par-ticularly anticipating. “I used to show a mare named Special Selena and we have one out of her that I’m very excited about,” said York. “Selena was a bigger mare, but real low working. There’s a lot of presence to her and a lot of presence to him. I ei-ther crossed it out completely or made it even better.”Following his aged event career, the stallion’s main responsibilities will be in the breeding barn, but if it works out, York said she wouldn’t mind haul-ing him to some the of Mercuria NCHA World Series events. “Right now we just want to get as much aged event money on him as we can,” she explained. “But he’s a pretty cool horse and I’d love to haul for the world.”York as been cutting for 10 years and is active in the Wyoming Cutting Horse Association, serving as director for the state and past president of the associa-tion. Her husband, Thad, doesn’t get to spend much time in the show saddle, but manages several ranches in their area. “I have an awesome husband that loves good horses,” said York. “He likes to make sure I’m mounted.”While York has the horsepower depart-ment covered, she said showing in Wy-oming can be challenging sometimes because there aren’t near as many shows as there are in Texas. She spends as much time in Texas with the Sniders as possible and said during the start of her show career she did have to adjust to the cattle that were used in Texas.“The cattle are nice in Wyoming, but when I fi rst started cutting I wasn’t used to the eared cattle they have in the South,” she said. “They’re different to cut.”These days, York has gotten accus-tomed to the quicker moving cattle and said the only drawback is having to be away from her husband and son while she’s showing.

“On my Facebook I said I wish I could’ve shared this with my family, but that my barn family was proud of me,” she concluded.

Jon Winkelried cut fi rst in the set of the Amateur fi nals on Dual N At Noon and it appeared that his 216 may be a con-tender for a winning check until York knocked him to Reserve. Still, Reserve honors was a nice payoff for Winkelried who reportedly retired from a 26-year stint at Goldman Sachs last year with plans of spending more time with his family and his horses. Winkelried formed a new partnership last year with Roger Wagner who now serves as resident trainer at Winkel-ried’s Marvine Ranch at its Weather-ford, Texas, location. Wagner previ-ously trained for Jim Vangilder’s Rock Creek Ranch, which sold out through a dispersal sale October of last year. According to Wagner, Winkelried the newly established program is beginning to see payoffs. “We’ve been catching up on everything and trying to get a show team together,” Wagner said of the recent ranch hap-penings, adding that Winkelried has defi nitely been in the saddle more. “He’s been able to spend more time practicing and working on cuts and he

rides a couple of practice horses be-fore he shows,” he said. “That’s really helped.”Winkelried recently fi nished sixth on Dual N At Noon (Dual Pep x Sugar Dox Com x Playdox) in the Amateur at the NCHA Super Stakes. She was purchased from Rock Creek Ranch and carried Wagner to the 2008 Breeder’s Invitational Open Derby Championship. The horse has since reached more than $150,000 in life-time earnings.
