Annexure – II : Best Practices
1. Title of the Practice
Motivating students through practical exposure
2. Goal
To establish relevance of how theory taught in classrooms has practical
importance in daily life
To create awareness among the students about research work in relevant
subjects which are useful to society
To inculcate scientific temper among students and develop a scientific
approach among them with seminars and guest lectures by eminent
personalities, visits to research institutions, in house projects and
competitions
To encourage students to pursue post graduate education in relevant
subjects
3. The context
The classroom teaching alone will not be to kindle interest in a student as
most of the times classroom teaching is theoretical in nature.
It is required to retain interest in students pursuing science education so
that the larger goal of academic excellence is retained.
The teachers also find it difficult to correlate the topics with the research in
progress in the field and new discoveries.
4. The practice
Different departments plan guest lectures on topics relevant to the syllabus
taught in the class room. Eminent scientists and academicians from
reputed research institutions are invited to deliver lectures in relevant
topics and the research activity that is in progress.
Workshops and seminars are conducted in the topics of relevance. Science
academies sponsor the lecture workshop and also provide the resource
persons in the related topics.
Educational visits to different research centres are arranged to get the
exposure to experiments.
Life science departments like Botany, Zoology, Genetics, Microbiology and
Biotechnology arrange educational trips and field visits to collect and
study specimens. Visits are also arranged to chemical manufacturing
industries.
VIJAYA COLLEGE: AQAR 2016-17 Page 56
The chemistry department arranges visits to industries to know how
different chemical processes happen.
Department of physics arranges visits to astronomical observatory to get
firsthand experience about the study of stars and usage of sophisticated
telescopes. Visits are also arranged to research laboratories.
With the available infrastructure and equipment available in the different
laboratories of the college students undertake projects.
Students are encouraged to participate in different science competitions
within the college and other intercollegiate fests to showcase their
knowledge of science and communication skills.
5. Evidence of Success
Many students who take up projects have gone on to preset their work in
conferences and also publish papers.
Many students have taken competitive exams like IIT-JAM to enter
research institutions for higher studies.
The number of students pursuing PG courses has increased.
Participation in these activities has increased academic performance and
led to higher order thinking among students.
This process has led to better attendance in classes and reduced the
dropouts.
In the college laboratories the students get involved in experiments and
are intrinsically motivated as they explore questions connected to their
own interests and abilities.
6. Problems encountered and Resources required.
The semester system restricts these activities as the available time is very
short.
The infrastructure available in the laboratories to undertake research level
experiments are limited. More funds need to be earmarked for this
purpose.

2. Title of the Practice
Creating social awareness among students
1. Goal
To create awareness about the social issues along with the academic
studies and to inculcate social responsibilities among students through
lecture sessions, workshops, seminars and community services
To make the students understand and function in the world that they live
and how their environments influence them
2. The Context
In the modern day situation the students are becoming more insensitive
and uncaring towards others.
In a situation of self centric scenario students need to develop ability to
understand and respond to the needs of others. In this direction the college
conducts programs to sensitize the students with regard to their social
obligations.
3. The practice
Students are given opportunities to express their views, interact with
teachers on a wide range of issues concerning the society in the classroom.
Several lecture sessions are held to create social awareness among
students. One such program was a session on ‗Train your mind‘ by
Viswanath Guruji, spiritual master, Psycho-spiritual Hypnotherapist and
Mind science trainer.
Students were made to perform skits on important days like Independence
day, Republic day etc.. showcasing the problems faced by common man
and the responsibilities to be taken up by students in addressing them..
One of the key social awareness is the health issues that we face and how
to tackle it and spread the awareness to others to remain healthy. Women
empowerment cell organized a talk by. Dr. Vijayalakshmi Balekundri,
professor of pediatric cardiology who spoke about health issues and
status of women in society and the need to develop ourselves as strong
women to face problems boldly. Smt.Ambika, Advocate and women rights
activist spoke about the legal assistance available to women.
Programs are held to create environmental awareness. In this direction
NCC wing our college created awareness to public near our college about
the ban of disposal of waste on roads. Awareness about save water and go
green were also conducted. A lecture on biodiversity and conservation
VIJAYA COLLEGE: AQAR 2016-17 Page 58
was held in the college. Cleanliness drive was held in the college premises
on account of Swacch Bharat Abhiyan.
NCC has introduced social service activity to make the students conscious
and sensitive to the needs and problems of their fellow countrymen and
also contribute to enrich community life.
NSS conducted annual camp for students at one of the villages in the
Bangalore rural district to know the socio economic status of people there
and students are made aware of the situation at rural places.
The college canteen is not allowed to sell any junk food and an awareness
is created among students about the ill effects of such food on health.
4. Evidence of success
Students taking part in more such awareness programs at the college and
university level
More students come forward to donate blood to the needy whenever a
situation arise
Students are found to keep their surroundings clean by net littering the
classrooms or corridors.
5. Problems encountered and Resources required
The number of students getting exposed to such programs are limited
There is a need to create a robust mechanism to involve more students and
organize more such programs.
There is a need to create a common platform involving different wings of
the college to address the issues systematically for the benefit of a larger
group of students.
