The Government of Barbados has awarded a total of 21 scholarships and 29 exhibitions to students whoexcelled in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination or in an Associate Degree programme at theBarbados Community College (BCC).
This was revealed today by Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, Ronald Jones, whilespeaking to members of the press in the Ministry's Conference Room at the Ministry of Education, Elsie PayneComplex, Constitution Road, St. Michael.
According to Mr. Jones, this year's results showed a marked improvement over the number of similar awardsgranted over the past two years. Last year 18 scholarships were awarded and 14 in 2008, which represents a 50percent increase between 2008 and 2010. Last year 18 exhibitions were awarded and 25 in 2008," he pointedout.
Queen's College received the majority of scholarships, with 13 students being awarded. They are: TimothyAdams, Christopher Alert, Kerri Blades, Carla Crichlow, Victoria Cox, Scott Gibson, Melanie Ann Holder, EmilyLayne, Tamisha Straker, Justin Weekes, Rebecca Whitehead, Jamiee Wilkinson and Moriah Yearwood.
That school also earned nine exhibitions, which went to Christopher Bourne, Stephanie Date, Gabriella Grant,Ronn Johnson, Blondell Hurley, Ashley Haynes, Ava Marissa Lee, Olivia Dos Santos, and Nicholas Payne.
Eight students from Harrison College were awarded scholarships. These are: Akono Brathwaite, NicoleBroomes, Stephan Edey, Chinelo Holder, Tara Gibbons, Kristyn Kirton, Jerome Leslie and Marissa Smith.
Exhibition winners from that institution are: Shakira Chase, Kimberlee Clarke, Cheyenne Francis, KentonGamble, Jason Holligan, Christopher Laurie, Karan Nayar, Sara DanaPatel, Janine Taitt, Ravier Weekes andLiam Rice.
Combermere student Joeleita Agard was also awarded an exhibition, along with eight students from the BCC. These are: Ezron Alleyne, Mercedes Antrobus, Richeda Boyce, Danica Corbin, Leandra Griffith, Janilee Kelly,Ashlyn ScottWilliams and Cecile Sealy. Cindy Williams, also a student of the BCC, received the only Award ofExcellence given this year.
Minister Jones congratulated the scholars on their success and teachers for their dedication and commitment. "The standards have been raised and students stepped up to the plate to attain success," he stated.
