I half expected to run

headlong into a

mastodon. The little

valley I found myself in

actually appeared to be that

untouched, that pristine.

It was early May several

years ago when I first

discovered this treasure. I

had noticed something on the

map that intrigued me. So I

figured the coordinates,

picked up my compass and

took off through the swamp.

What tickled my fancy was

the Dead River Valley located

about seven miles or so South

Southeast off of the sharp

right turn in the King snake

trail as it heads back into the

park: the Congaree Swamp

National park.

If you continue in a straight

line past the turn, you will

eventually run into the

Congaree River, provided of

course that you can see the

signs of an old rutted road

that once carried loggers out

of the swamp towards home;

but if you veer off a bit to the

left, say at about at a thirty

degree angle or so, and

keep going until you think

you’re there and then go

half that far again, you will

come to the Dead River

Valley and the Dead River

Lake. It is like stepping

back into another time.

There is a holy, almost

sacred feel to the place.

When the undergrowth

thins out before you and the

cypress and tupelo come

together to form a canopy

above; the hush of the place

seems to envelope you. You

know, or at least I knew,

that God was there. I was

in a safe place. I was able

speak freely with my Lord,

and the world was far

enough away that the still

small voice that is God,

could be heard.

Oh, the wind worked its

way through the tree tops

giving voice to that

mysterious, almost baleful

sound that carries within it

the whispers of the past.

The birdsong rebounded

and echoed from cypress to

cypress through the ever

present mist, coming from

everywhere and nowhere it

seemed and yet the silence

of the place filled me with

peace and brought such a

blessing.

The Congaree Swamp is a

magical and mysterious

world. If you listen closely

you can sometimes hear the

faint echo of Sherman’s

cannons or the staccato

cadence of a denizen long

forgotten held within the

memories of the ancient

trees. The cypress knees

take on a life of their own at

dusk and at dawn. It is in

those moments of half-light

that you see things and you

hear things that breed

apprehension and fear.

Few are the folks who

venture off the beaten path

to discover the wonders

within, and therefore few

are the folks who receive

the gifts offered there.

How often do we miss out

unknown? Can we even

count the times we have

refused to venture forth for

Jesus Christ

because of

imaginary

dangers? Why is

the well-worn

path so

appealing to the

human being?

We are given but

one life to spend

as we wish on

this earth. Why

do we insist

upon wasting so

much of the gift

hiding in the darkness when

we could be basking in the

Light?

I fear that we simply don’t

(Continued from page 1) trust the Light. We have

lived in the familiar darkness

so long that the Light

frightens us, so in darkness

we remain.

The blessings of God are only

found when we venture out

of the darkness and into the

light of Christ. Only after we

break the chains of fear are

we blessed. So my

challenge to each and every

one of you is that you

release your hold on the

darkness, break the chains

of your fear and

venture forth

for Christ.

Love,

Pastor Tony

Experience the journey of a lifetime!

What would happen if you could sit down with Moses, listen to his stories, ask him ques-

tions, and learn to trust in God the way he did when he led the Israelites out of Egypt?

Your kids are about to find out! With all the hardships he faced, Moses might have want-

ed to give up, but he trusted God to guide and provide. As kids hear Moses stand up for

his faith, they’ll discover how they can trust God in everyday life.

Everything—from the music to the costumes to the Israelite Camp crafts and activi-

ties—absolutely everything has the look, feel, and flavors inspired by the ancient cul-

ture of the Israelites.

This summer at Wilderness Escape VBS, kids will learn that we can trust God on our

own life’s journey. Be a part of Vacation Bible School at Beulah Methodist June 16 –

20 from 6 - 8 p.m. Make plans to join us at a special combined service of our contem-

porary and traditional worship services on June 22 at 10:00 a.m. where we will praise

God and showcase what we have learned during our Wilderness Escape.

Visit our VBS website at www.groupvbspro.com/vbs/hl/BeulahKids to

find out more, register, and volunteer. You can also call the church office

at 803-892-2842. This is a free event open to the entire community.

Join us to camp out with Moses and the Israelites on a journey of a lifetime!

Preschool news

We see God’s miracles in Beulah Meth-

odist preschool everyday. We are con-

fident this is a program that is held in

his hands. Last month, a non-member

parent donated a Smart Board to the

preschool. Brett McGee heard this

was one of our goals, drove to Charles-

ton to pick up this $3,500 worth of

equipment and installed it for us the

next day! This is such a valuable

learning tool and puts us on the edge

of the latest technology! There are no

other preschools in the area that have

Smart Boards! We are so thankful

that Brett heard this call from the

Lord and went above and beyond for

this preschool and the church!

Congratulations

to Ms. Jana for

the arrival of

Baby Emma! She

was born May 7th

At 5lbs 4 ozs.

Both mother and

Baby are doing well! She is beau-

tiful,

and certainly a gift from heaven!

If you are over the

age of 16 and

would like to vol-

unteer for summer

camps please let

Leeann know.

The late Danny Thomas lost his life savings of $600 at a time when he was out of work. He

and his wife, Rosie, had a baby on the way, and they needed money. Danny worked at part-

time jobs so Rosie could buy groceries. He also borrowed money from friends. It was a

tough time in his life. A week before the baby was born, Danny had the grand total of sev-

en dollars and eighty-five cents to his name. What would he do? "My despair led me to my

first exposure to the powers of faith," Danny would later recall. On Sunday morning Danny

went to church. When the offering plate was passed he put in his "usual one dollar." But

something unexpected happened that day. A special missions offering was taken. The

priest explained where the mission offering would go and Danny felt he had to give some-

thing. "I got carried away," Danny said, "and ended up giving six dollars ." He had given

away all his money that Sunday. What in the world had he done? He walked up to the al-

tar rail, got on his knees and prayed aloud. "Look, I've given my last seven bucks," he

prayed. "I need it back tenfold because I've got a kid on the way, and I have to pay the hos-

pital bill." He went home with a mere eighty-five cents in his pocket - all the money he had

in the world. "You won't believe this," Danny Thomas later wrote, "but the next morning

the phone rang in the rooming house hall." It was a job offer. He was offered a part in a

commercial. The job wasn't much but the pay was good - seventy-five dollars. "I literally

dropped the telephone receiver," Danny remembered. "First I whooped with joy; then an

eerie feeling came over me." He remembered what he had prayed at church the day before.

"The seventy-five dollar fee," he said, "unheard of for me at the time was almost exactly ten

times the amount of money I had donated to the church!"

Beulah United Methodist Church and Gilbert’s Cub Scout Pack 60 are presenting The P.R.A.Y. Program, God and Me, for boys and girls entering 1st through 3rd grades. The God and Me program is designed to help children become best friends with Jesus as they tell their story of God and Me together. The cost of this program is FREE, and it is open to the entire community. It is officially recognized by the Boy Scouts of America, Camp Fire USA, Girl Scouts of the USA, and American Heritage Girls as the reli-gious awards program for youth, and youth in these organizations are particularly encouraged to par-ticipate. All students will receive an award at completion, and Cub Scouts with Gilbert’s Pack 60 will re-ceive a knot that they can wear on their uniform. Parents also have the option of enrolling in the God and Me Adult Mentor Program. In this program, the parent is an active learning participant alongside the child. The parent would have lessons and pro-jects to complete in the Mentor Workbook just like the child, and then both parent and child would work on the student curriculum together. The mentor program is designed to provide the adult with additional opportunities to model his or her Christian faith and to help a young child talk about his or her belief in God. This option is available to all parents but is not required. Interested parents and children are invited to attend an introductory session on June 8 at 4:00 p.m. in the Social Hall to learn more and to plan the session dates together. There are 4 additional sessions that will be completed during the summer months. Dinner will be provided at 5:00, followed by J.A.M. at 5:30. Kim Patterson will be the counselor for this program. Contact her at [email protected] for more information or if you would like to participate but cannot be at the introductory meeting on June 8.

The God and Me program is a wonderful opportunity for congregations to nurture young people and their fami-lies and to encourage them to grow in faith together. Find out more at www.praypub.org. June 8 – 4:00 p.m. Dinner will be provided at 5:00. Jesus Blesses the Children – Matthew 19:13-15 We will decide on the rest of the session dates together at the introductory meeting.

Bring your family calendar! Session 1: God Created Me - Children will study the creation story and learn that God was pleased

with all creation. They will acknowledge God as Creator and give praise to God. Session 2: Jesus is God’s Gift to Me - Children will learn of God’s love through Jesus. As they tell

parallel stories of their own birth and the birth of Jesus, they will proclaim that Jesus was born to

be their Savior. Session 3: I Can Talk with God - Children will learn how important prayer was to Jesus and that

God wants them to pray. They will learn four parts of prayer to help them share their thoughts with

God. Children will be required to memorize the Lord’s Prayer. Session 4: Because God Cares for Me, I Can Care for Others - As children learn to lean on God as

their Good Shepherd, they will be challenged to reach out and be “good shepherds” to those around

them.
